What do souls do?

I noticed sometimes you can pick up something that isn't a heart and makes a weird noise when picked up with no obvious text. I think these are souls, as identified by the ending chapter saying I had picked up 26 souls. What do souls do

Those red glowing skulls are ammo. I believe we are going to make a on screen indication for how much ammo you got.

Could we get an auto pick up for ammo and health, pressing E on everything I walk past is rather annoying.

If the red skull things are ammo, what does it mean at the end of the chapter, souls collected?

Souls are the swirly lookin' things that power the weapons secondary attacks I think.
