View Full Version : Tribes: Ascend: Great game, horrible community

Very pleased with the game, extremely dismayed with the player base.
When I created my account there was a checkbox I had to click to verify my being above 13 years of age. Why is it, then, that around half the players - especially the ones with more play time - seem to be about as immature as a six year old?
SHAZBOT
SHAZBOT
SHAZBOT
I AM THE GREATEST
Get the enemy flag!
Get the enemy flag!
Get the enemy flag!
SHAZBOT
SHAZBOT
... This, not just occasionally, but constantly. From not just a few, but many players. Why? Are you completely r3tarded? Was Tribes for some reason selected to be the 'special kid' game you could play? Do you never tire of making a total idiot out of youself and degrading the quality of the game for everybody else? Sure you may be annoyned at your team, but clicking 'Retrive our flag!' five times in a row is going to accomplish what, exactly, beyond flagging yourself as a dislikable player? Must you really be this immature, all the time?
Yes, the word 'Shazbot' is funny. Why, though, is spamming a seemingly accepted practice for this game rather than something frowned upon? Why is it preferable to nullify the utility of the game's otherwise both neat and useful VGS system and turn the entire voice aspect of the game into nothing more than a tool for griefing the rest of the players on the server?
TLDR: Grow the F up. Game deserves better than this pathetic community. The voice spam aspect is really only a symptom of this, the decidedly hostile and nerd-elitist attitude towards newbies another. Wake up, you clown - this may be the internet but you don't have to take part in the idiocy. Stop. Being. Sad.
PS: Though the developers in their divine knowledge apparently decided to offer no actual mute option until after (sic!) the round is over, you can mute the especially sad indiviuals by typing /mute [name] in console. Really though, Hi-Rez Studios, what were you thinking putting the mute function there?

sorry about your experience with the community. There is a much better Tribes community over at Tribalwar http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1

The voice spam kind of grows on you. To be honest, though--aside from the end-of-match "gg," 'I am the greatest!" and "shazbot" shoutouts, I find very few actual spammers. (those guys who do it constantly and require muting)

Yeah, you should go say hi to everyone at TribalWar. Make sure to tell them how you feel. Great guys over there and really supportive. When I wanna ♥♥♥♥♥ about Tribes, I make sure to go there. Both Haggis & I are members there, too.

I'd rather have constant voice spam over no voice system at all. Too many games either negate or completely ignore implementing such features now-a-days (Battlefield 3 and it's abysmal comma-rose comes to mind)- it's a real shame, especially on a game like Tribes: Ascend where you should be using team-work and communication in order to win.
The only time I "spam" is in an emergency, as well as when I'm playing with new players or people incapable of doing objectives. A good example is earlier when someone had the flag; I asked him to pass it to me, temporarily, as he was at slow health and I was a Doom-Bringer at full-health; he died, I got the flag, and then spammed "Retrieve Our Flag" over the course of 10 minutes because the vast majority of my team where standing around in our base doing nothing useful.
As for trolls; they're in every game and there's not much you can do. I've come across a fair few on this game, but generally I ignore them as they're not worth the time. I told one guy to quit whining earlier and soon after received several "Yes's" - the maturer, sensible players seem to outweigh the idiots.
Like deadlybydesign said; I hardly find any spammers/trolls myself, so evidentially you're just coming across the wrong people. It's unfortunate, but don't let it put you off an amazing game.
(In hindsight; I may have just been in a game with you since you used that voice command as an example. Still, my point still stands)

There's a spam blocker that keeps people from overloading vgs.
I know that's not really what you're talking about, but I'm just saying.

I don't even notice the V commands and I never see anyone actively writing anything destructive. I consider this a massive step above games like LoL where some troll is calling someone else a noob every game.

I've been playing for a couple weeks now and I've found that most people are alright, and some are even helpful if you need to ask questions about items or how to do something. There are people that will say "good duel" or "gg" after you engage in an epic duel with them, people that will switch to a class that the team needs (like say a Doombringer on flag defense), etc.
However, sometimes there are a few really annoying person. You can mute them by either pressing tab and turning off their sound icon, or by using the console by pressing "~" and typing "/" commands. I think it's "/mute Playername".
So here are the typically annoying people that I see. Please don't become one of these!:
Ragers that flip out every time someone on their team isn't a pro-gamer, or say stuff like "my team is a bunch of morons".
Spammers who say their VGS commands 5 times. Once is enough, maybe twice if it's super urgent. (Like "Take the flag from me!")
Self-absorbed "pros" that emote "Bye" or "That's too bad!" after every single time they kill someone, or if someone runs away, or if a flag is returned.
Trolls who mock players on the other team, usually typing out their garbage instead of just VGS.
But that being said, I played CoD:MW3 when it was a free weekend and the players in that game are MUCH more immature, rude, and trollish compared to Tribes players. It doesn't even compare. The Tribes in-game community behaves much better people than the average CoD:MW3 players... and certainly better than games like LoL and DOTA2.

How can you not like the VGS system? I think it's absolutely fantastic for teamwork and can be quite humorous at times. Dare I say the VGS spam is one of the main aspects of T:A.
If you hate it that much in order to insult people who use it instead of stopping completely to type out things, there's probably a way to mute voice audio around the menu. I know you can mute players individually, but you'll probably end up crippling yourself. Unless, of course, you're an immature person who plays team-based games solely for working alone.

The fallout of the spammers is that my brain just filters out the VGS.
Which is bad for the people trying to use it for legitimate teamwork... =/

i think part of the problem is the original tribes community moved on and got old
so a lot of players are new to tribes and don't have a clue what to do
so it looks like it will take time for these new folk to learn what to do
but like the original tribes games they will get there
the most frustrating for me is undefended base. that drives me nuts, i can't defend it all by myself
i basically leave or get some of the folk unhappy that they are doing so poorly to come around and begin to defend the base and most times it works out by the end of the half hours they have turned around and are doing much better, but going in so many don't have a clue
this mostly has to do that this game requires a lot of team work and right mix of classes and responsibilities. if people join in and help out they can do very well, if everyone goes and does what they want then it's a disaster.

Firstly, muting a player does not mute their radio commands last I checked.
Secondly, if you think T:A community is bad then you have never played any other shooter on the face of the planet(?).
Lastly, "Incoming Enemy Vehicle!"
Also, do not play any public games with a competetive mindset. Pure frustration. It is for practice only.

most voice command users are several hundred hours into the beta ahead of the steam release, are ACTIVELY trying to get noobs to pay attention and help objectives, and yes, TAUNTING IS A HUGE PART OF VGS aside from any/all good intentions.
It is also a staple of all tribes games. enjoy it or dont, this game is rage-inducing heaven. 400 hours cant be wrong, im excited to keep dyin/killing.

At first I didn't like it but it grew on me and made a game that can be frustrating, routinely light hearted and fun!
Mute who you don't like, ignore it, or just have fun with the system!

There is no mic in Tribes, only vgs and chat. I like that, as it removes mic spam, and voice spam already exists in the many games it's implemented in. being able to hit VFF to call that I'm going to hit the enemy flag soon is really helpfull when you're going 250+ km/h and don't have the luxury to type or even attempt to speak, you just know that VFF will get your point across. screw up the grab? VGO or VGS to express your accident/frustration.
Also, "I am the greatest" (VGTG) spammers aren't just doing it to spam. trolling is part of the game mechanics itself. Why try to work on the objectives when your trolling of the enemy team will have them actively try to seek out and kill you, thus ignoring their own objectives. This is great for infiltrators, but nice for other classes as well. if your spam can pull 2+ enemy players away from their defense spots, more power to you.
My typical voice commands are, as I said, VFF to call that I'm going for the flag, VA#/VR#/VD# to call for what I see needs to be done to help us, whether that be the attack, repair, or defense of certain structures, VGS to call out my own frustration, as VGO just doesn't do it for me and would require my fingers to move too far, and finally VGW/VGCA to call out my own excitement over doing something. Don't know what those commands are? learn to play, as they are all important to learn.

It's ironic that somebody is complaining about people being thirteen years old when the people they're complaining about are clearly old enough to remember playing Starsiege Tribes.

Uh no... I was just in a game where a guy was spamming voice commands every second for about the last ten minutes of a game. Nobody would votekick him because everyone was so "amused" by his hilarious behavior. It didn't grow on me, though apparently enough people thought it was funny that he got to stick around. Gamers are the lowest of the lowbrow sometimes.

90% of games I play don't get that level of spam. You're probably just being unlucky. Also if that's all it takes to annoy you you need a thicker skin to internet.

Of course someone said this... of course it's the fault of the people who don't want to be spammed by "FIX THE GENERATOR" every second for ten minutes. It's because they aren't thick-skinned enough. Players should definitely not kick someone doing this because it's just too ♥♥♥♥ing funny.

Like I said, people like that are definitely annoying, but they're a slim minority. The trouble is that, out of my hundreds of T:A matches, I've only had maybe five like that. So, chances are that you'll stop seeing most of those people once they get out of the <Rank7 leagues.

It's 2012. If you expect good community on new game, you need wake up. It's not going to happen. People should've beaten their kids a few times more often when they were younger so that they wouldn't grow up like this.
So far I haven't had any problem tho. Try to do Battlegrounds or dungeons in WoW with free trial and I swear you come back to Tribes and praise the community :D

we do have an outside of game IRC channel setup, where sometimes parts of the HiRez dev team stop by. check it out
server: irc.tribalwar.com
channel: #ascend
and like I said before, you should also probably register on the largest and best Tribes community around - Tribalwar.com - http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1

It's about the choice of how you approach the game: You can either play it as a gentleman/sportsman or you can be the narcissistic, spoiled little brat teeming with hostility from behind the safety of a distant monitor. It's the internet f*ckwad syndrome (http://www.recreatingtampa.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/giftheorypennyarcade.jpg) all over again. Only new thing is, and my reason for creating this thread, that in Tribes: A, it is rampant, moreso than in most other games I've recently played - which is sad, because the game deserves better.
Again, ultimately, it's a choice. The end result, though, is the atmosphere in which the game is played. Would you rather listen to 'F*CK YOU LUCKER NOOB' or 'Nice shot' when you land that shot? You can be elite or just elitist, and you can be a respectable player or just another internet f*ckwad sheep. Your choice.

You want the children to be mature, but you can't be mature enough to ignore a very mild griefing attempt? Has your brain been insulated from the internet the whole time you've been using it, and tribes is the very first thing to pierce your fantasy internet land where everyone is nice and no one ever does irritating things to jarate off another?
I have barely even seen anyone type anything out at all and I don't even think there is mic support, so... you complain about VOICE OVER SPAM? Really? Thats what you're complaining about? Thats what makes this a terrible and 13 or younger community?
Voice overs have been spammed over the internet since Duke3d. If you were anywhere near as mature as you assume everyone else should be, you'd be over it by now.
Why don't you grow up.

I find the community on par with just about every other online FPS out there, aside from a few notable exceptions of course. I like the voice commands myself and don't mind them at all.
I wish the game had VoIP personally. So many online games seem to omit this feature. It's like we're moving backwards in time.

You need to relax and/or have thicker skin. This can't possibly enrage you this much. If you're at all experienced with online games, you should be used to this kind of stuff by now.
