Anyone else? It initially crashed at new game, restarted, then when it loaded I could only see the characters, rest of the textures didn't even load followed by a crash, was probably in-game for about a minute. But hey, the stuff that did load looked pretty great.

I'm getting this too. I couldn't see anything though. Nothing loaded at all. Just clicked Play in Steam and got this error. Wtf man?!

I didn't install/download the High Res pack yet. I'm going to do that now and see if that changes anything.

Also, I tried verifying the game cache, and disabling my anti-virus (BitDefender). Nothin.

You need to add the HiRes Pack DLC or it gives an error.

I've had this crashing issue with a few games such as Homefront, Saints Row The Third, and Space Marine. It has something to do with Steam's DRM that downloads a unique exe. I had to make a seperate Steam installation in a different location on my hard drive just for those games. It appears that this game has the same sort of issue. It won't work in with my main Steam install but it works fine with my alternate Steam install. Not sure if that helps anyone but that's how I got it to work. It's kind of a pain in the ♥♥♥, but it made the game work for me.

Xiupan

Hmm, I will try that after I do this:
I'm wiping the Steam folder on my hard drive in hopes of getting clean Steam files back. Dunno if it will do anything. Just trying anything and everything at this point. Will report back shortly.

Nope. Wiped the Steam folder to get new Steam files. Nothing. Going to try and delete the local game files and re-download Sleeping Dogs. Thankfully, my internet is fast. I'm just hoping this storm doesn't affect my internet connection or connection with the Steam servers...

I get the same error. I got to play the game for about an hour, logged off for a break and now I can't get back in. I get through a good part of the load screen but it always stops there and crashes. I can tell because the dragon stops chasing its tail.

My game won't even fully start up. I hit play, then a white window opens. Before anything can load, it crashes with the HKShip.exe error.

I press play on steam list and get HKShip.exe has stopped working. I haven't played a mere second of this game, Steam really needs to work on their server support for released games. I installed the Texture pack as well, nothing. Validated Steam files, nothing. I'm getting really impatient with this.

Levitra

Im getting the hkship.exe error as well. I have not been able to install the game yet. When I keep my antivirus on I get a code 55 error when trying to install. When I shut off my antivirus it installs finally but then the hkship.exe shutdown occurs. The antivirus was quarantining something in windows temp folder so that must be the problem.
I have to go to work..

7thsin
08-14-2012, 06:11 AM
I went into the sleeping dogs folder, and tried to manually start HKShip.exe, here's what I got.

This application has failed to start because d3d11.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

We all know re-installing will NOT fix this problem. I'm gonna google the dll and see if I can find a copy, If I do i'll post a link.

---- Edit ----
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3d11
This is for the dll, i'll post again if it works. It will run a dll scanner after it fixes the problem, wait itll it's done and then exit.

---- edit 2 ----
I installed the dll, tried to run hkship again got this,

The procedure point CreateDXGIFactory1 could not be located in the dynamic link library dxgi.dll

So... I'm thinking steam botched the entire install or at least something is getting lost in translation. I'm going to go find that dll and the dxgifactory file as well, will edit AGAIN if it fixes it.

---- Edit 3 ---

IF YOU RUN VISTA YOU MUST INSTALL SERVICE PACK 2 TO PLAY THIS GAME.

Getting tired of tracking all this down. The entry point CreateDXGIFactory1 requires the support of DXGI 1.1 which is available on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and as an update to Windows Vista (KB971644). If you are using Vista and only have DXGI 1.0, please install this Platform Update. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971644

so you think a brand new Steam install into a different directory on the hard drive will repair this?

It worked for me. I can't speak for anyone else. The only reason I tried doing it is because it made other games I have work that had this same exact issue. It was not just a new install, but a separate install than your normal one.

For those of you with windows 7, try setting compatibility mode on HKShip.exe to Windows Vista SP2 (or experiment a bit with the vista compatibility modes) and see if that has an impact. It made my game work for a lot longer before crashing, and over on the sleepingdogs.net forums, it was helping them too.

The last thing I'm trying now, is downloading the pirated copy and seeing if I can get that to work. If THAT works, it has to be the Steam DRM or something with Steam.

I'm not doing this to support the piracy of games, I'm doing this because Steam or Square Enix refuses to give me official support after taking my money.

Yep... It's not working here. I click to open the game, and it gets a window, then informs me the program isn't working. I've tried repairing, and I've tried deleting local content and re-installing. The bad thing is... I honestly have no idea what fixed it... I didn't finish downloading the pirated version so it isn't that. In between the problem and now, the only thing I have done is take a look at the DirectX registry with regedit. But I didn't change anything, I just made sure to see if the DirectX registry was there and it was. I tried re-installing DirectX right afterwards, didn't work. Then on a whim, I just tried running the game again, and voila, it ♥♥♥♥in works. WHAT?? lol...

I'm hoping this will provide a clue to what the real problem is for others... in the mean time, I'm doing to play this ♥♥♥♥ now!! :D lolololol

I'm not sure about you ATI guys out there but for those with an nvidia gpu instead of updating through your Windows system update option head over to the nvidia support site and use the option that checks your gpu drivers and it will tell you if your drivers are up to date and if not it will send you a download link. That should settle the problem (well at least it did on my end)

you can go into the nVidia Control Panel. And then there's a section at the top where you can manage settings. On the right pane should be options to change settings for specific programs via a dropdown menu. You can add sleeping dogs to this, and then made sure Thread Optimization is "On".

So I've tried these:
- Reinstalling the game
- Run from a separate Steam installation
- Run DirectX update from redist folder
- nVidia force thread optimization
- delete HKship.exe and verify
- Updated (and later reverted to latest stable) to beta drivers
- Disable Steam overlay

Then I used:
- Vista SP2 Compatibility and it worked (can get into games), but still crashes frequently (every 1 - 5 minutes?) or just crashes outright.

Sad, I could play flawlessly for over an hour before the last update. I'll just have to wait it out unfortunately.

Ok I got my game to work finally and here is what I did...(I was not getting passed booting up the game and keep getting the hkship.exe error)

The problem was a dx11 driver issue.
I have windows vista 64 bit.
**After making sure vista was completely updated I was still missing the dx11 driver so I installed this update manually.**
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4390

After installing and rebooting I started up the game and did not get the Hkship.exe error. The game started up fine. Remember that I have not even played more than 20 minutes of the game yet. I wanted to share my solution with everyone here first.

Forcing the thread optimization in the nvidia panel globally and for hkship.exe did not make a difference for me.

Right clicking on hkship.exe and messing with compatibility and running as administrator did not make a difference either.

I am using the latest nvidia driver 301.42.

Hope this helps some people.

My best guess is that we're going to be waiting until Friday for the rest of the world to get the game. Disappointing. I miss having a console around for situations like this, which are becoming more and more frequent lately. It feels like I'm spending as much time troubleshooting games than actually playing them, which sucks because I certainly don't remember paying to beta test anything. Still, these things happen and at least some people seem not to be having any problems at all. Here's hoping they get their crap sorted so that the rest of us can get to it.

Well I played more than ten games recently on my rig and had no problem whatsoever. Sometime it is just bad luck.

Oh, there are plenty that work. If there weren't, I doubt steam would have the userbase that it does now. And yeah, I have pretty terrible luck when it comes to... just about everything, lol.

Also, I get this error message after it crashes. I read through this entire thing, so I know a few people have been getting the same issue. Boots to flash screen, then dies before any cinematics play. Just a blank white screen and an error message saying that HKShip.exe has crashed. Then, Steam says, "This game is currently unavailable (application running)". I have had no problem with any other games so far. I can get "The Witcher 2" to run, but not this game, dammit.

It's finally working for me. I can confirm that for vista users you need to update to SP2 and then keep updating after that until you have the most recent updates...for everyone else I hope you receive help from steam or square enix soon, nobody likes to show support to a developer to then find that the game may not work but their transaction processing system takes your money just fine.

hey guys, same issue here. game plays fine for about 20-40 minutes and then i get the HKShip.exe crash error. happened three times tonight already. VERY annoying since i lost progress for some sidequests when it happens. hope they patch this asap.

btw, nVidia card here and i have the latest drivers.

I'm getting the same issues here however it seems my case is getting worse as the crashes are coming more frequently. One thing I notice now is that every time a crash does happened, I get this notification that my nvidia drivers stopped and had to be restarted.

it seems like i solved the problem with the not responding exe.

i installed msi afterburn - a program for overclocking. i reduced the core clock from 900 to like 850 mhz. got the same problem with battlefield 3 (freezing screen, then no responding exe).

maybe this one helps for some of you too.

Wow, I never said this to another man, but I love you!

That worked for me, I was able to actually play.

I am running on a factory oc'd 580 and underclocking it back to the default 580 clocks (772/2004) I was able to play for over 30 minutes with no crashing.

Before I couldn't even get into the game, I'd just be able to watch part of the intro and hang up and crash with the hkship.exe not working error.

I got my copy to work by uninstalling the graphics drivers and restarting with the internet on. It re-loaded all the necessary drivers. Plays pretty smooth now, actually.

Here's a page with some pretty great troubleshooting tips. Still annoyed that I had to go through hell just to get this stupid game to work...

All,

I was attempting to run this game on a custom built built laptop with a M680 loaded, and if I used the desktop shortcut created by Steam I received this error.

So.... I deleted the desktop shortcut and pathed directly to the HKShip.exe which is located under \\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SleepingDogs and then right clicked on it and said Run As Admin. The game fired up and I fully expected for it to blow up but... I actually got it to the game and played and... it seemed to work for me.

I setup the game to my liking, played a little, left the game, created a shortcut on desktop directly to HkShip.exe and now I just double click that shortcut and start the game that way. Seems to have fixed my issues. Hope it works for at least some of you.

I am using the 304.79 Nvidia beta drivers. I'm going to try and roll them back to the closest stable release and see if that works.

Why would you do that!!!? Rolling back your drivers to a less reliable version is NOT a good troubleshooting solution! Maybe uninstalling and re-installing them, but not rolling back.

Had my first HkShip.exe crash after 14 hours played so far. One possibility is that I updated my video AMD video drivers to the newest version today (from catalyst 12.6 to 12.8) though with so many other people crashing that seems an unlikely culrit.

Intel HD graphics are not suitable for heavy 3D gaming and it is unlikely you can upgrade the video card. Before buying a new laptop for gaming, it is wise to do as much research as possible and to purchase a custom built upgradeable one.

What laptop do you have?

Just got this tutorial in my Inbox from Steam and am sharing it with you guys!

Also, I'm running Windows 7 and updating my video drivers did nada. However, I ended up fixing the issue by right-clicking on the HkShip.exe file, found in (.../Steam/Common/Sleeping Dogs), and checking the radio buttons for "disable desktop composition" and "run as administrator".

I also ran a complete uninstall of my video card drivers and restarted (Windows 7 automatically installs the drivers for you upon start-up, if you're connected to the internet). You'll notice some slow-down in the boot-up process.

I don't recommend the last step for anyone using any other OS. Make sure you download the drivers from your video card manufacturers website before attempting this type of uninstall/reinstall. Really gotta' know what you're doing in that case.

Otherwise, look through this support database that they gave me! I hope this helps!

What laptop do you have?

It's an Acer Aspire 5750 with on-board Intel HD Graphics and an i5 2450M processor. It can handle damn near anything I throw at it, as long as I lower the settings a bit. Got the game to run after a fair bit of research and tweakage. Playing the game on medium graphics and it still looks beautiful.

I did the research... if you're implying that I didn't. My laptop overclocks itself to 3.0Ghz. Only problem is it tends to run a little hot at that point, so I need to invest in a nice cooler. Best budget laptop for your money, imho.

Also, it is entirely possible to upgrade your laptop video card as long as you know how...

So another interesting thing I've discovered. I am playing on a laptop with a switchable graphics setup (Intel HD Graphics 3000 and an ATI card), and if I set Catalyst to run the game off the dedicated chip, it crashes all the time. But if I set it to run off the integrated intel chip, it doesn't crash (but it lags, whereas the ATI card can handle the game easily).

Also, someone suggested changing the processor affinity on the game, and when I do that (while running off the dedicated chip), it slows the game down a bit but it makes the crashes less frequent.

I dunno if anybody has any further suggestions beyond "wait for it to come out in EU and see if the devs patch the game". Also, does anyone know how to get that D3D11 installer to work? Every time I run it, Windows says "this program may not have installed correctly". (I'm running Win7 64)

I just got a response from Steam as well. It was useless, though. Directed me to the article about AMD FX processors. Seriously? I guess that they didn't read the part where I said that at one point I was able to play for 2 hours. Also the part where it didn't crash my PC on startup. Or the part where I said that my BIOS was up to date.

Guy told me that I was the first person to report this problem

He then said to do at least a safe check up of:

a) windows updated
b) dirct X updated
c) STEAM>LIBRARY> SLEEPING DOGS [RIGHT CLICK] > LOCALFILES> *click* 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'
d) update my graphics card

then if problem persists to ring him back and pester him more :p

I ran Steam as administrator and then changed the process for HKship.exe to high and I no longer get it. I changed nothing else and have had high res. textures downloaded since the start. I run a EVGA GTX 670 4GB GDDR5 with beta drivers and since I ran steam as admin and changed HKship.exe to high priority I no longer run into any issues. Also just to answer everything I also play with everything set to max. Just in case someone wondered.

Okay, here's a way to identify the issue:

~go to your start menu and (depending on you operating system: WinXP, Vista, Win7), click on either "run" or find the search box on the bottom left hand corner (in Win7) and type in "event viewer".
~Then, in event viewer, click on the drop-down list on "Windows Logs" and then open "Applications".
~Wait a bit for the list to populate.
~Open the HKShip.exe file and let the game crash.
~(not applicable to everyone) if you can't get out of the crash, hit ctrl+alt+delete and it should open the pop-up for task manager. Shut down the application manually, if necessary.
~Find the crash on the list and post both the summary and detailed results here.

That way, we can see if it's either a driver issue, install issue, or etc. Then, we'll start finding solutions or linking to tutorials on this thread to see if we can't get the game to work on your system. Really, I spent an entire day and a half trying to get the stupid thing to run myself. I'd like to help out.

This application has failed to start because d3d11.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I got that as well. I verified the game cache, deleted the game and redownloaded and reinstalled it and it still shows up with that error. Not so sure as to why.

Has anyone found the solution for this yet?

For 7thsin and fyrevortex: go to the steamapps\common\sleeping dogs\redist\DXRedist folder and run DXSETUP.exe. then go back up to just the sleeping dogs\redist folder and run D3D11Install_2010.exe, and after doing that see if you can run the game.

And I've tried that 10x

I run the DXSETUP.exe just fine. But the D3D11Install_2010.exe gives me an error message "please install latest service pack".

I have Win7 64bit. All updates and drivers are up to date.

Anddo, if you're not getting the "d3d11.dll not found" error, my suggestion wouldn't apply to you. ;)

You're probably in the same boat I am. Also, what're your specs? (I'm really kinda wondering if those of us getting the d3d11.dll fault module might have some outstanding hardware similarity, and the only one that really comes to mind for me as far as my computer goes is my switchable graphics setup). Also also, try running it in Vista SP2 compatibility mode and see if that helps at all?

Im also facing the same problem

the game crashed when try to launch , after the "preparing to launch sleeping dogs" nothing happened ... just the "hkship.exe stopped working"

Here's what i do to fix
- go to nvidia control panel ( im using 580 M )
- add sleeping dogs to "whitelist" so that it always use nvidia GPU with this game instead of Intel HD one

as some of you already guessed my issue caused by nvidia optimus doesnt recognize hkship.exe , so i must add manually

hope this help

im using alienware m17x r3 btw and i think same issue will happend to others system which use nvidia optimus also

So I woke up this morning to play the brand new game I had pre-purchased so I click "Play" and then a white window for Sleeping Dogs opens and I think "Oh yeah, I've seen this before. It'll go fullscreen in a second and start running the game properly... Wait.. nothing's happening." So I try clicking on it, and I get the now infamous error.

So yeah, I know some people are crashing during gameplay, but my game hardly even qualifies as starting. Also I've tried the usual stuff like verifying the cache and deleting the exe and trying again, but nope nothing.

Sure is a good game I bought here...

EDIT: Nevermind, fixed my issue relatively easily. Downloaded the lastest Nvidia drivers.

Also also, try running it in Vista SP2 compatibility mode and see if that helps at all?

My specs:

Win7 64bit
i7-3610qm 2.30ghz
ATI- 7970m 2.0 ram
16.0 gb or ram

Specs wise, I should be able to run circles around this game. I'm using Catalyst 12.7. Everything is updated.

It's odd. I get constant crashes in the main menu. When I do get the game to run. I make it past the initial opening scene, and complete the chase sequence. It's on the way to the dojo/tutorial area that the game crashes. It freezes in place, and I have to ctrl+atl+delete back to the desktop.

edit:

about the switchable graphics . I have Hkship.exe set to high performance.
I'll give Vista compatibility mode a try (though I think I've done this before)

edit 2:
No luck with Vista. I can tell the game wants to run, but it keeps failing. I can walk to the tutorial area front door, sometimes make it in and perform the first two combo lessons, and then it crashes.

Well, my problem was previously concerning d3d11.dll, but now that I messed with some things, it appears a different dll is the problem for me.

Do you use Steam mover to install to an alternate place or is there another method? I spanned a 1.5TB and 3TB drive just for my Steam and Origin games and am almost full (got over 1600 games via Steam), so am looking for ways to be able to install to a new 2TB drive as I don't want to fill the spanned drive completely as that itself can lead to problems. Thanks in advance for answering my query.

I can't even play my copy of Sleeping Dogs as it' suspends download at 66% :(

May have found a fix for some.
Well... after doing different things and a little research, I found my reason is the game needs to be patched (obviously). More specifically Sleeping Dogs won't launch because of it's incompatability with a color scheme of Windows. Even more specifically, it's not compatible with Vista & 7's Aero (which is transparency and nice graphical icons). Well I switched to Basic and still had prob. reverted back. Which led to finding how to get it running.

SOLUTION

EXIT Steam!!! Go to HKShip.exe. Check the desktop compression. (I think thats what it is, I'm at work) Ok now right click and Run as Admin. A box should pop up saying it's temporarily changing scheme or something of the sort. Click OK. Steam should start AND so should the game.

Well that worked for me, actually booted for first time last night and got to play for like 2 hours. No probs no hic-ups. Looked great and was fun. Hope it works for ya'll like it did for me. But my sob story isn't over, after work I'm going outta town for the weekend, so now that I got a fix, I still can't play!!! >.< FML...

720p lowest settings is playable, but trying to use the amd card just crashes it after a minute or two.

That sucks. I only asked cuz when I switched to basic, it acted the same as Aro, so switched back and THEN did what I did when it worked... When you have desktop compression, does it like flicker black then go back to normal as if nothing happened? Thats what was happening to me, except I noticed it flashed a notice in the lower right, had to screen cap it to read it, thats where I found out the whole Aero ordeal.

Guys... i dont know but i got the game running and heres my fix :

ive been reading about people fixing this crash issue by setting their clockspeed to "factory default" or not OCing their graphic card,, well the thing is, i never OC my graphic card, all i have is one GTX 690..

sooo.. by using the same "philosophy" what i do is to disable the multi-GPU mode and using the second core for PhysX and voala.. got the game running past the loading screen...

Some additional thing i do : I run hkship.exe directly from the installation folder, i check the "desktop composition" box, run it as administrator, and force on thread optimization from the nvidia control panel

and one important thing.. i disabled the in game steam community..

Specs :

Core i7 2600k 3.4Ghz (no OC)
GTX 690 < Disable multi GPU mode, use second core for physx
16GB of RAM
1TB caviar black hdd
Windows 7 64bit

hope this helpp.. i know there are people out there that are not using 690 or any multi gpu card,, but hey, another solution for knowledge based.

Devs didn't bother to test the game on PC properly before the release. PC version is extremely unstable. ON Win 7 game crashes to desktop after several minutes of gameplay, if i try to play under windows 8 - white screen crash appears after several minutes (I can hear the sounds but cant play).

Conclusion: I can't play the game at all. It's the first time for me in my history. And, please, Square enix, dont blame gamers they got outdates driver and similar **** - it's ur game that needs patching. Shame to devs. Shame to Square enix for releasing a beta version of the game.

I got the Hi-Res DLC to test if that helps (some people seem to think it does) but so far it appears to be a 3gb download? Is it really 3gb for a texture pack??? Or is the game actually updating aswell (to fix that bloody error...)?

Edit: Ok so it wasn't a fix. I'm a bit jarateed off right now... I spend 27 and all I get is some TF2 items...

Edit 2: LOL at the fact it changed that to jarateed!

Hey Anddo, try running it on the switchable graphics but set it to power save (meaning the intel card) and see if that works. We're kinda realizing that's part of the problem for those with an AMD/ATI switchable graphics setup, I've even got one of the mods over on the official boards asking people that now.

Breakthrough!

Though, as expected, in order to run in power saving/balanced, lot's of concessions had to be made. I basically had to turn everything down to low, and drop to 720p for solid fps.

It's funny, because I accidently unplugged my laptop this morning while trying to run the game. The game stayed on the screen longer than before. But I thought it to be an anomaly.

Next order of business. Why?.. Why can't we run the game in high performance as intended?

Ok, i can play this game smoothly, now!!
Before, it's crash every 10 mins, but now hrsly no crash even in max display.

Here is what i did, not sure which one fix it or all of them...
OS: Win7 64-bits
1. Downgrade video driver from 301.xx to 285.xx (NV GTS 250)
2. Upgrade Chipset driver of motherboard (P8Z68-V PRO, from Asus)
3. Upgrade BIOS of MB.(From Asus)
4. Upgrade audio card driver of MB. (From Asus)
5. Turn off anti-virus.
6. update game with 1GB path. (682MB, actually)
7. update game with HD pack.

No idea. Probably something to do with the switchable graphics drivers and the way they handle DX11 (or something to do with how they call DX11 in the code). Also, consider yourself lucky. I've got an i3 and it's borderline unplayable (game is in slo-mo) on the intel chip for me.

Switchable graphics, nice idea on paper. But poorly executed. I've had nothing but trouble with this setup.

Thanks again Tibiazak.

I'm able to run the game with everything on normal setting at 1366x768. The game hasn't crashed once since. Other than when I try the HP settings.

I'm having issues as well. I'm just being patient, no point in getting impatient and ending up messing up my PC by altering certain settings like some others I've seen on this forum. This is what I'm running:

Alienware m17x R4
12 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 7970m
i7 2.53GHz Processor

It's obviously a coding issue as I am starting to see the game works pssibly for AMD (ATI) users who change in the catalyst from high-performance to power saving (running off intel chip). I am wondering if those with newer cards are experiencing this issue as it seems like those who are actually able to access the game are running not old but year oldish video cards.....

I ordered from Amazon and requested a refund and didn't get it. So I am sure steam will possibly be the same way unfortunately. Hopefully this will be fixed soon (sometime this weekend). Until then I'm going to finish playing Max Payne 3.

Scat, I am getting the hkship.exe has closed error as well. I am thinking it has to do with switchable graphics as when I first launched the game by default the switchable graphics is "unassigned" therefore running off the integrated graphics. I set all settings to extreme, exited out, assigned high performance to hkship.exe and went to reopen and got the hkship.exe error.

I had to end up downloaded a beta version to get it to work.

Ok I've decided to try updating my AMD drivers. Turns out there was an update (12.8, I have 12.6), well I think it's an updated one, the file name was 12-8...*something* so I'm guessing that means 12.8... Desktop, it's 64-bit (which seems to be a few people's problems from what I've read) but I will post results of my driver update test, I need to restart my PC I think though first, just to be 100% sure.

I honestly don't know what else to do. It's pretty ridiculous that a game could be allowed to be released in this state... And the fact that neither the stupid that works on the game, nor steam have even tried to fix it yet (They havn't even stated they are aware of the problem)... I've had two hangs now, one a few seconds ago. I was in the middle of hacking a camera and it went to the desktop. The game is still running in the background playing music but you can't Alt-Tab back in to it.

This is on Windows 7 x64 with an Nvidia 580 latest non-beta drivers.

I see where some people are coming from saying that this is not an issue for the majority, but seriously, I think that the devs really need a better form of communication and a re-analysis of their priorities.

The 1.3 patch didn't fix anything for the crashes and stated nowhere that they were doing anything to record any sort of crash. I checked the SD forums and the devs just left.

I'm really sad that I won't be able to play this game for a few months because I'm going on vacation soon.

Excellent! You can preview the game for yourself once you get there by stealing a car, leading the cops on a high speed chase and then slapping around some Triads. By the time you get out of the hospital and/or prison, the game should be fully patched!

okay, after the recent updates and also forcing threaded and making HKShip run as admin, it seems to be working fine now. i had an unexpected crash again but it wasn't related to HKShip.exe error at all this time. it simply exited to desktop. but after i restarted, i played for hours without any issues. not sure if it's related to what i did or to the updates but it seems more stable now.

I had a few crashes before the patch, after the 1.3 patch it was fine.

But I was playing for a few hours without a problem, then i decided to enter Club Bam Bam and it crashed! I thought it was just a fluke but i tried going in again and it crashed. I saw a lock box in the managers room and i've been trying to get that.

Also i've been getting weird stuttering while driving, especially when turning.

Sorry so late, the issue is with a Direct X11 driver. Could also be an issue with the video card drivers. If your game is still not playing (they've been patching this game like crazy), try updating Direct X and (if you know how, this step requires that you're familiar with drivers and what-not) uninstalling/re-installing your video card drivers. That may clear up the issue.

Also, check the minimum system specs on the Steam website or Square/Enix website or wherever you bought it to see if your system can handle the game. Hope that helps.

But my sob story isn't over, after work I'm going outta town for the weekend, so now that I got a fix, I still can't play!!! >.< FML...

Just adding to this... also, in addition to checking the box to "Run as admin...", check the "Disable Desktop Composition" box, as well. That should help get the game started with this method if it works for you.

My laptop is more than capable of handling the game.

Installing factory default drivers helps. But I don't get the most out of my card. Also, the 7970m doesn't have the best drivers. Most 7970m owners use 12.6/12.7 beta drivers. I use a 12.7 modded, because it has the best performance at 1080p max settings. I could use the beta drivers that everyone else uses. But that means dropping most games down to 1366x768 just to be playable. Sleeping Dogs is the only game out the the hundreds I own that crashes like this.

I'm on Windows 7, but disabling aero AND running in vista sp2 compatibility mode I can get into the menu.
Updated graphics drivers, even running in LOW resolution and low settings, hoping something will work.

Once (SOMEHOW) I got into game after waiting ages. (went off and sunbathed). Played a bit, logged out and in again - thought it was finally working as it loaded my save game.

Left - came back - now hanging whilst re-loading. Obviously I haven't solved the problem

Sorry, but it really is wasting my time, beta testing for the Goons that programmed this..........

Anyone having trouble getting past the developers screen should disable steam community. Beyond that just pray your rig was one of the few they had in mind when they made this game :(

Folks, it doesn't crash or freeze at the loading screens, it just stops loading and then after 10-20 minutes it resumes loading.

Probably something wrong with the CPU or GPU memory being accessed or processed incorrectly; either way if you don't want to wait for a patch and really want to play the game then try waiting at the loading menu (new game or load) until it works.

Ok everyone who crashes after clicking 'new game', listen up! As crazy as it sounds, the idea of leaving it open, but crashed, for 20 minutes (roughly) ACTUALLY WORKS! The game obviously has some horrible incompatibility problems and needs a tonne of ram to load up properly, but if you give it time, it works. MAKE SURE TO PLAY ON WINDOWED, or else you cannot tab out without crashing it fully, watch a youtube video or something, you will know when it is working because you will hear rather loud rain and thunder!

Fun :D

If you still crash at the dev logos, you need to try some of the other mentioned fixes, and make sure you always play games which are likely to crash in windowed, so you can easily tab out and find fixes, solutions or tips.

Game seems to run well, but GPU fans went crazy along w/temps.
Did a bit of running, a bit of fighting, maybe for 20 mins then had to quit for fear of melting!

i'll try this and see if it would work, wish me luck. will update progress when i'm finished

rolled back to 296.10 and still crashes like usual, so i conclude at least in my case it is not a driver version issue at the moment. (i've tried 296.10, 301.42, and 304.79, and none solved the crashing issue).

Didn't work for me, unfortunately. The game still crashes after a random amount of time (sometimes 5 minutes, other times after 60+ minutes).
With the 296.10 drivers I do get a "display driver has stopped responding" pop-up though. Didn't get that with the new drivers.

...for all of you ou there, who came across that wired crash sceneraio, in wich the game just crashes to desktop and also fu**s up nearly every graphic driver related sh*t, or the also well known HKShip.exe has stopped working issue, HERE IS THE TEMPORARY SOLUTION FOR THAT CRASHING STUFF: 1.I really dont know where the crashes come from to be honest, and in that case (once in a while cases like that come up) I was ready to try everything out excluding reinstall (downloading 9,9GB again serious???), so I started research with some abstract words and Ive read about one guay I come across more often, because he nearly got the same gaming-rig like me, and he posted somewhere, that he downclocked his GPUs and gained at least gaming time from 30mins up to 3hours. 2.I never trust stuff like that but the effort in mind I tried it out, and guess what it worked. Dont get me wrong the game still crashes but way less than before. I can also play now for typically 1 to 1+1/2 hours.
I thought it would be interessting to share this with you guys, because I really dont get the point why this "works" and hoped someone could give some input on that or share his experience with that fix-try.
btw Im a ATI Radeon HD User newest ATI driver; downloaded directx websetup and installed; and also installed the directx in the sleeping dogs folder
simply used the ccc to set my GPU clock -125Mhz to standard
!!!PLEASE reply Im a tech geek would really like to know if this works out for others, because if so, its maybe a driver Vram timing issue or something in that way!!!

Well, I know that if you force terminate the program when it's loading then the program might actually freeze and might crash.

I decided to test your theory today I had nothing better to do. I let the game lock up at the load screen after selecting continue. After 15 minutes gues what I got? A BLACK SCREEN! Mind you have been able to play this game 3 times. So I really don't think it's my rig. I think the game needs to be patched. Seriously.

I tried the down-clocking method since Ghost Recon: Future Soldier had a similar problem at launch and that fixed it for that game.

However, it doesn't work with Sleeping Dogs, game still crashes after a random amount of time (for me, at least). It does change the usual lock-ups to blue screen errors, though.

Indeed.
Everytime - first load takes 10-20 mins. Don't know the exact time, as I go off and do something.

When my 7970 fans kick in, and the house temperature rises I know it's loaded.

Once in, load times are fine, fps 50-60. All good, great game.

Exit game, then its another 15 min load. Go figure.
