A little update I'm still at 3.7ghz but with a multiplier of 8x. I can boot into windows at 4ghz but I'm having a hard time getting it stable. http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=410237

Any idea when the E0 stepping of the E8xxx series is coming out?? Think they'll be able to overclock further?
They are out now with the e8600 and they do overclock better. You're not guaranteed to get a e0 with the older models yet (e84, e85) but they do exist.

hey Rafiq_kassam1,
I upped my rig just a bit. If it is possible, when you have some free time do you think you can update my link? Thanks!

New Overclock:
Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 2.40 Ghz 8MB L2 1066 MHz @ 3.50 Ghz ~t4ct1c47~ (http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=410878) Tuniq Tower 120
I'd nearly given up on the P5N32-E but the 1503 BIOS seems to have finally fixed this board's issues with clocking quads.

An overclock can 'degrade' over time right? A CPU may require more vcore to stay stable?
rhalle
10-23-2008, 09:42 AM
Yes.
The motherboard can degrade slightly over time and the voltage it puts out can droop, so you might need more.

what the difference between windsor and brisbane?
They're different Architechture's for the cores. Brisbane is normally 90nm, but I think theres a 65nm out now. The 90nm Windsors draw more power (89W I think). Brisbane is smaller, and runs cooler, drawing only 65W. This allows for more overclocking potential.

IMO, the folks that have already posted validated links should be left in the list for their result, but the link replaced with something like "validated data has been purged" or some other statement. Overclocks tend to deteriorate over time with any component, just like your physical conditioning may deteriorate with age if you have participated in any sporting event. I don't think you should ask me to prove that I can still run a race at the same world record pace 2 years later, should you? That to me is not fair. We already posted our validated results, otherwise they wouldn't have been entered into the database listing you've been keeping.
At the end of the day, you're the keeper of the thread, so it's your call.

I'm looking at the top Wolfdale clocks and I'm wondering if the 4.4+ GHz overclocks on the E8400/8500s are 24/7 overclocks. I find it highly unlikely that the 4.7GHz E8500 is running 24/7, and if it is I'm wondering at what ludicrous voltage.
Here's my E8600 @ 4.5GHz @ 24/7 @ 1.34V

I havent posted in a while and finally found my way to this forum again...I see someone knocked me off for my e6600 OC
Here goes my i7 920 @ 4.62ghz

Nice clocks, cac! Maybe I'll post my i7 860 soon... :) Looks like me e6600 score still rivals all of the C2D's here, that was a pretty impressive chip.
These new boards are easy to OC...I remember when 400 mhz was hard to OC to..

Well, I reworked the air flow in my case, and became determined to get a 4000MHZ stable on my 1055T.
There's no way in hell an average chip will get 4.2GHZ stable.
My temps were only like 38c on the false core temp reading, and under the CPU temp they were no higher than 55c.
Here we go.

are you using the stock cooler for the 1055t?
did u just play with the front side bus n voltage to get the OC?

I'm using a T.R.U.E Rev C in Push/Pull.
I've got 11 fans in my case.
Stock cooler can't even do under 55c at stock..
And I lowered the multi and upped the Bus speed.

can you get your RAM to run at 7-7-7-21 at that speed(~700MHz/DDR3-1400) if you use 2T command rate ? or as that as 'tight' as you feel you need to go
what about that new CPU feature: turbo mode thingy , disabled?
Sythedragon
05-10-2010, 07:00 AM
I disabled the turbo mode.
It's 6 cores at 4000MHZ.
I don't use Core temp, for obvious reasons, and it gives a false reading on Phenom II's.
I don't have to prove anything.. Phenom II's have a low heat tolerance, if it was above the threshold, it'd BSOD long before 8 hours of sustained load.
There's no way I can improve upon the timings further.
Although a kid in my class has CL7 1333MHZ RAM..
My RAM is 2000MHZ CL9, I used the 2000MHZ RAM stuff as that has the highest clocking ability, and as such, I was able to run high bus speeds, while keeping it at a sensible 1400MHZ at CL8.

Temps won't increase more than 5c.
But see the difference in Core temp to CPU temp.
Had nothing to do with proving ones self, I just wanted to see, because I would have showed the temps if I were showing people such an impressive overclock..
I dont like overclocking my CPU's much so I went with a 3.4ghz overclock (http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1173628), I didnt like the temps my NB was getting so I went back to stock..

So then sythe, do you think the 1055 or 1090 is a better price per dollar buy for a gamer, no encoding of any type, no photoshop or sony vegas.

The 1090T/1055T have no reason to go towards a gaming geared PC.
My mates Phenom II 940 at 3.4GHZ with his 4870x2 is still killing every game at 1920x1080.
A Phenom II 965 overclocked would last 2 years..
If you're set on a hex, then an overclocked 1055T..
The 1090T isn't worth the premium.. My 1055T is running the same as overclocked 1090T's... Alebiet, only achieveable on a crosshair IV.

I agree with this, I have had a few issues playing games on my CPU unless I disable a few cores in the affinity section...
Since Turbo is disabled, I disabled it because its slower than my 955BE @3.4ghz VS my 1090T running 3cores at 3.6ghz..
Im also having issues with that Crosshair IV motherboard, your getting a 114.8F NB temp and mine is hitting 127F and its underclocked... I think mines defective..

I don't know why you say that...as its my understanding that there really is no such thing as dual/quad "threading" only single and multi threading
...now sure, while a game might show most of the benefit with a second or third core...and ultimately performance may be limited by one demanding task which can only run so quickly on one of the cores, even with that other tasks(even including things not associated with the game) could be 'out of the way' running on any other more cores you have...no?
and we are only talking about a $200 CPU here

...thats well within the range that a gamer could spend for a CPU, what would any drawback possibly be?...saving $40 on a 955 BE wouldn't be that big of a deal, esp. if like you are saying, the hex is higher binned

I won't pretend I know the intricate workings of coding, but it's hard to make programs fully use 4 cores, let alone 6.
Cinebench etc don't count.
Also, I'm in the UK, the 1055T is 155-170 quid.
A 955 is like 120 quid.
Why'd they merge my thread?...

Well Dragon Age Crashes constantly with 6-cores, unless I lower it to 4cores..
DIRT2 I had to make a custom workerMap4core that used 6 cores or else it crashed..
Those are just a few that I have tested so far..
Of course my crashing issues may have been caused by my below 8pin/4pin issue below..

I plugged in an 8-pin connector for the ETAX12V, because the manual said the computer wouldnt boot, but I just switched to the 4pin one and now all my temps are lower...lol

hmmm, with the change from 4-pin secondary ATX CPU power plug to 8-pin was designed to facilitate the move to multi(quad) core, tho many motherboards didn't mandatorily add it right away, maybe now it is necessary...couldn't the lower temps be a sign that your cores are receiving less(not enough) juice ? ...both too little voltage and too much can cause errors

4+1 power phase design is fine for Hex cores.
T Rush
05-10-2010, 09:00 AM
oh, its not how many MOSFETs you have supplying power to the CPU(but thats good to know that 4 phase will still work, where many these days are 12+) its just the 12v power cable/plug from the PSU to motherboard secondary ETAX12V(was originally called the "P4" sometimes when it was first added on mobos) ...today you find that most every PSU comes equipped with a 4+4 cable, so that it can be used in the older 4-pin plug or the latest 8-pin plug...I wonder if bes hex is alittle power starved if his PSU is dated enough not to have a 8 or 4+4 cable
or if the 6-cores are alittle too new and unexpected for gaming, and a few games(or Windows, or even the motherboard/BIOS) needs some updates/patches

Right now temps are all good, same with voltages, computer runs more smoothly now..

The T.R.U.E isn't even that good, I only bought it as I threw 70 quid into fans and didn't have the money for anything better..
The Promilatech Megahealms (Spelling) is a very good heatsink, but requires a bracket.

Overclocking is work in the margin. Margin on each chip is slightly different. Your numbers may be too much or just the starting point for someone else's CPU and are fairly useless in itself.
My air flow's insanely good lol.
As in... 11 fans...
Number of fans doesn't denote good airflow. Were you to use a smoke tracer you'd probably see a mind boggling amount of vortexes in your case, trapping (hot) air. If you plan to actually do this, use something that generates smoke that doesn't leave a residue.
Sythedragon
05-11-2010, 10:57 AM
Phenom II's work on a VID basis.. The lower the VID, the better the chip can clock.
Ergo, no 1.4v 965 will take 4GHZ on air/water at under 1.55v, but my 1.375v one does at 1.5/1.475 respectively.
All my fans are the same, I've got intake and outtake..
4 intaking, then being pulled by the T.R.U.E and out.
Don't act pretentious.
Also, I've been clocking Phenom II's as long as they've been out.
They all overclock the same within a margin of cooling at the same vid..

2000MHZ CL9 Ripjaws... But the Thuban IMC can't handle 1800MHZ... So... running 1400MHZ at CL6 rips 1600MHZ CL9 to pieces.. Hell, it rips 1600MHZ CL7 to peices. those 'numbers'(that you are posting in "MHZ") are actually "effective" dual data rates(so really it is "2000DDR" or DDR3-2000 that is rated to run at 1000"MHz") this is an important distinction(besides being one of my 'pet-peeves') because the clock cycle delay latency timings don't operate at effective dual data rate, but use the "actual MHz" the RAM really runs
while higher speed alone(like running your RAM at its full rated DDR3-2000 1000MHz speed vs only 700MHz DDR3-1400) will improve bandwidth of the RAM, and this is the max amount of data that can be read/written to the RAM(if that can be fully satureated by demand from the CPU and app running on it) it actually does very little for individual calls/writes of data(no matter how large or small), or how "quickly" the RAM is able to operate, that has much more to do with a timings to speed relationship... pretty easily, mathematically, we can get theoretical numbers to represent CAS 9 @ 1000MHz(DDR3-2000) vs CAS 7 @ 800MHz(DDR3-1600) vs CAS 6 @ 700MHz(DDR3-1400)
1000MHz/CAS 9 = 111.11
800MHz/CAS 7 = 114.29
700MHz/CAS 6 = 116.67
and higher values would suggest "quicker" performance
normally I look for performance RAM to operate at a relationship of 1 clock cycle delay(for the CAS, tRCD, and tRP timings... with the tRAS around the total of those three numbers added together) per 100MHz of speed(in actual MHz, not dual data rate 'effective' speed)...so thats why I was wondering if you could improve the performance of your original overclock with "tightening" the speed/timings relationship from CAS 8 @ ~700MHz to CAS 7 @ ~700MHz...and it seems you have been able to do better than that, and now are even "tighter"(with more voltage) than what your RAM was even rated for
(likely Sythedragon already knew all that, but hopefully that might clear it up for others that could question why running the RAM at a slower speed as he has done , with lower timings, might be better...but keep in mind 1000MHz/CAS 8 = 125 could be still better, using the full rated speed for bandwidth, with numerically more clock cycles as a delay, but those clock cycles are each shorter, thus the total time would be quicker for higher performance all around)
Sythedragon

The IMC limits my frequencies on the RAM.
And an AMD set up gains more lower/tighter timings.
Hence why I chose for the tighter timings over the higher frequency

I'll look for your thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1262897) .exe
And an AMD set up gains more lower/tighter timings. so should modern Intel systems now as well....it was really only the older "FSB" systems that continually 'liked' higher and higher speeds of RAM for more bandwidth(regardless of timings and their relationship to that speed) as they could benefit more from quantity of data with "smart prefetching" and lager caches to collect a good sampling of data that 'might' be used vs trying to do quick calls over such a long path
but I think my main point to get across is that "lower timings"(nor higher) aren't necessarily meaningful(no matter what platform) as you still have to factor the speed(which is the MHz of the RAM) each of those clock cycle delays are running into that...an example(if it were possible) would be "tightening" your RAM from CAS 9 to CAS 8 both at the rated DDR3-2000 would be even "quicker" performing, and have max bandwidth possible, than your great CAS 6 @ DDR3-1400 settings
PC6400 = 800MHZ effective = in CPUZ 400 yeah, but it actually doesn't work to use the term "MHZ" when talking about the effective dual data rate of RAM as many make the mistake of doing, as that is another trick of the bandwidth concept...for instance as a comparison: a motorcycle manufacture might want to say that they can move "people"(not a single "person") at an "effective rate" of 220MPH because a group of motorcycles riding together, with each bike effectively able to carry 2 people on it(just as data can be carried on 2 places of each clock cycle) can run at an actual speed of 110MPH, so that they could "say" people(as a group) are traveling at a rate of 2X the bike speed...but that wouldn't really be true if it was important to meet each person at the end of their trip, it would still take them(each of them) the same time to travel that distance if they were individuality going 110MPH(which they really are!) tho if there really were 2 people on every bike(needing the demand for people to totally constantly fill all the seats on the bikes first) it only might seem as if people were traveling a rate at twice the speed("rate" being the key word, which depicts more of a quantity in a given time, and is different than "speed") ..so that is why things like CPU-Z show the actual speed in "MHz" and not "rate" that a whole bunch of data might be moved...and since sometimes there might be large calls/writes of data(a group that could be traveling at a rate), or the need for a small call/write of data on the the RAM(which would need to happen quickly, and not a factor of bandwidth or how much) it is generally better to differentiate between "DDR" and "MHz" terms and not lump them together as interchangeable(effective ≠ actual)
now the whole "PC6400" adds another factor to the bandwidth equation, and that is bit width(64-bit that RAM uses is equal to 8 bytes) , that number is another theoretical effective "Mb/s" speed derived from this formula:
MHz speed x data rate x bytes = theoretical Mb/s
so:
400MHz x 2(dual data rate) x 8 = 6400Mb/s or PC6400 DDR2-800 RAM
again, to actually(not effectively) achieve any of this these interfaces would have to be 100% saturated, which only can happen theoretically, but any(and all) data really does move always at the actual MHz speed

The IMC can't handle CL9 2000MHZ, let alone CL8 2000MHZ lol.
If my IMC could take it, I'd be at 1800MHZ CL6.
Because I'm on a 1055T, I had to bus overclock, my RAM's at the lowest multiplier I could do..
So, it's either CL6 1400MHZ, or an unstable CL9 1800MHZ.
So far I like my ram at 1091.6 (6-6-6-19-25-1T)
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1180637
My Centon DDR3 1600 ram is supposed to go like this:
1066mhz
6
6
6
19
25
-----
1333mhz
8
8
8
24
31
-----
1600mhz
9
9
9
28
37
I try to move out of those and the computer will crash, but I can move the speed around to try and find the limit before it changes to the new timings or is supposed to change..

If my IMC could take it, I'd be at 1800MHZ CL6.
but I doubt your RAM could run at DDR3-1800(900MHz) with a CAS Latency clock cycles delay of only 6 counts
...if your RAM is now stable at 1.675vDimm at 700MHz with CAS 6 timings, I caluclated that as the CAS operations running at a factor of 116.67 throrectacl MHz speed(there actually are other factors involved as to what the rate of operations would be, that thats just a number to use as a gauge)...900MHz/CAS 6 would run at a much quicker spec of "150"...to run at 900MHz(that is if you believed your Integrated Memory Controller was capable of that, it might have something to do with the uncore multi to achieve that) and obtain that same relationship to what you are able to reach now(as far as how "tight" your RAM is running) it would only be a CAS delay of 7.71ish so more like rounded to CAS 8, not really near CAS 6, as that would be an exaggerated estimation of the RAM's capabilities, far beyond(much tighter than) what you are running now(equal to running less than CAS 5 at the 700MHz you are using now with your RAM)
the great thing about DDR3 and its higher speed, the factors of clock cycle delays(timings) become more varied, allowing finer increments to be used to dial in, where with older and slower DDR(1) you would see CAS delays of 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 to try and get the best relationships with RAM running DDR333(166MHz) to DDR500(250MHz) speeds ... with the bigger numbers, there are more variations to play with: CAS 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, etc. with RAM speeds from DDR3-1000(500MHz) to DDR3-2400(1200MHz)

I'm now at 1400MHZ at 5-6-5-16-20-1T.
I don't know the scienece behind it.
I just know how to clock and tweak and get the most out of it ;P

you mean 700MHz(or DDR3-1400) but yeah, thats amazing
maybe back down on the CPU speed(like just lower the multi) for a bit of testing on where you can push the RAM to....like see how high of speed you can run and still hold onto CAS 6, or CAS 5 or 7 etc....take it to the point where it fails, so you know where it is...I'm curious now what would happen at different speeds
have you tried changing the uncore(NB) multi(or whatever they call it in your BIOS)...I think thats the trick for stability at those different RAM speeds, getting something that makes the other happy

I'd still be happy in the high 70s I don't think I'd like low 80s ether, but I wouldn't try pushing more than 1.4v iirc that's the Max V core for most Intel cpu's going back to the core 2 days.. Best to be save than sorry..

Totally agree, anything in the 80's makes me rather nervous as to the affects it would have long term, as does anything over 1.4V!
I've read on another forum that these CPU'S are safe up to 1.52V, but nobody actually recommends that but I've seen people pushing them past 5Ghz with 1.5V +.
Bottom line is that nobody knows the long term affects and possible degradation as the CPU'S haven't been out long enough yet.
Just out of Curiosity, where would you take your voltage reading from? I go by CPU-Z but in the Bios my Vcore is set to 1.410V and at 5Ghz it's at 1.45V in the Bios (1.42V CPU-Z)

You must have gotten a really good chip if it runs 4.5gHz under 1.2 volts !
Or A really high end mobo that can deliver the juice..

Punched in 45 ,level 1 and bang there prime95 stable..
I know how to OC so that will test my skills when I try push 5G, had a QX9650 with DDR 3 1800, but getting the quad to 1800MHz FSB was tricky as was getting it stable at 4G..
I'd have to say that with over clocking it helps to pay a lil extra for a quality board.. Z68X-UD7

My CoolerMaster Hyper 212 plus keeps my 4.2ghz Core i5-2500K under 70c. Great budget cooler.
Thinking about replacing the stock fan with a Gentle Typhoon.
I have two of these on my Hyper 212+ running @ 1800RPM, its not louder than my GPU when the fans spins up. Great heatsink keeps my Phenom II 1090t @ 3960mhz running 100% and under 54c on the hottest of summer days. Good case ventilation is necessary of course.

5Ghz @ 1.448V. Prime 95 stable but temps are uncomfortable for me - 80's under load. It boots into Windows at 1.42V but is not stable and crashes under load.

Man u are gain I'd never go past 1.4v and personally only did 1.4v once BIOS auto set it that high  the Max for my CPU then was 1.3625 iirc but 1.4 was concidered safe in the oc community..
Intel QX9650 back then FWIW

Over on OCN, people are split between 1.4V and 1.45V being the safe maximum for 24/7 use and plenty of people are using higher voltages than that for 24/7 use  lol!!
You've got a golden chip Jay - I haven't seen anyone get to 4.5Ghz with a 2600K on such a low Voltage :D
Your chip is just begging to be pushed beyond 5Ghz. . . . or is it just me? :p

Maybe 1.04 is very good @4.5G but is it the chip or the combo, more testing on the weekend I think I have the cooling for it..

Having a good combo is definitely a bonus, but I'd still say that chip was "Golden" - Congratulations on winning the CPU lottery!

Just got 2x 1150 RPM Gentle Typhoons to cool the thing down. Temps are the same but I can't hear the thing anymore

I see this thread has been quiet for a while so I guess I'll start it up since I have a new, and good, rig.
He's my CPU-Z validation http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2168725
At 4.4GHz during a full stress test I stayed below 60c using a Corsair A70.
Also @borg, with your OC at only 1.05v there is such a thing as too low of a voltage. You can set the multiplier to what ever you want but if you voltage is too low the OC will not be stable. Have you done any extensive stress test with something like Prime95?
Edit:
Just for reference my full system specs:
CM 942 HAF X
ASUS P8Z78 V-Pro
i7 2600K (4.4GHz)
Corsair A70
8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM
EVGA GTX570 2.5GB
Corsair 1050HX (over kill on PSU since I will be getting a second 570 soon)

Didn't you see the prine95 tested on the previous page.. I've been over clocking for a while n I have the tools so to speak no such thing as to low on voltage as long as its stable..but as I pointed out the voltage may be incorrect it would seem there's is a problem with cpu-z possibly...
Cheers n happy new year

Since I have no way of overclocking my laptop CPU, I suppose the GPU will have to do. -_-

No I did not see that other post about Prime95 and yes I was only saying voltage can be too low if it's not stable. Also some people don't run their stress tests long enough.
I ran two Prime95 stress tests on my own OC. I did one test for an hour then switched to some other stress tests like benchmarking with 3DMark and several different games. At the end of the night I let Prime95 run again while I was sleeping.
What did you set your voltage to in your BIOS? That's the voltage reading I would go by over CPU-Z. I know for mine I specifically set it to 1.33v and CPU-Z fluctuates slightly from that but for your OC to be stable and just barely over 1.0v is just unheard of. Gratz to you if it really is!

left it stock so it's unknown just up'd the Multi Steps Load line to level 1, I need to get back in to OC'ing this sucker to find out but with the I7 2600K i really don't need any more grunt..
Also I run a water loop to keep things cool..

Just took the #1 spot for Deneb, thank you very much :)
PS, my chip is nothing compared to my firends' 965BE that does 4GHz at 1.36v - he took the #1 spot on hwbot for the 965BE, at 5.8Ghz under DICE.

Water cooling does not always have better temps. The A70 beats things like the H60 and H80 and the D14 beats the H100. Water cooling is also louder and reduces your over all case air flow.
Under the full stress test my A70 kept my i7 at 4.4GHz at or below 60c and in games like MW3 or BF3 I sit close to 50c.

well I wouldn't call sealed units water cooling and I doubt it's affected my air flow that much may have improved air flow in my case so the air flow thing is a load of BS IMO

How do you work that out 4G has been done plenty of time's before you and at lower voltages here is a link to my post a few months back 10-08-2010 at 02:11 PM http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=17390486&postcount=1436 (perhaps I should have said 1 year back lol)
The G/F's rig just for fun. Prime 95 tested at a much lower voltage.. And the same CPU as you..
