Here's to Valve taking more of my money in 09.

I'm hoping to spend considerably less this year, but that could turn out to be a difficult task.

Sorry I forgot to remove it. The sale should still be on, however when the holiday sale ended Valve also took down the Project Aftermath discount.

Valve probably won't address it until Monday, the same day the sale ends, so hopefully it's extended.

Yes, they did ... and there already is a huge topic about this. Left 4 Dead used to be $49.95 + VAT and now is 45€ incl. VAT. It's still more expensive than it used to be an most other games actually went from their price in $ to the exact same price in € which makes them ridiculously more expensive than it used to be and of course even more expensive than retail since the Steam store has always been overpriced.

There is a simple lesson to be learned here:
Do not buy your games via the Steam store!

Valve doesn't even want to sell you their own products at a competitive price.

If you're from Europe, get Left 4 Dead on amazon.co.uk for £26.99:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Left-4-Dead-PC-DVD/dp/B001GIOGDW/

That's currently about 28€ incl. VAT. Even with shipping within Europe that is much more reasonable than anything Valve ever asked for this very good, very polished but also very short and hyped mod in their own store. It's even cheaper than it was during Valve's own "Holiday sale".

And the retail version has to be activated onto your Steam account anyways ... no difference in the Steam version, other than having to wait two or three days for delivery and it saves you some download time since most of it can be installed from DVD.

Awww, come on, let us buy the games!

In this times of economic crisis and recession, there are people wanting to buy your product and you dont want to sell, weird system eh?

Put pressure on the developers and etc, i already sent a ticket to 2K, but... here goes the conversation:

Hello,

At this time, we have no information for the game becoming available for regions it is not currently available in. Many apologies for the inconvenience.

Hello!

I live on Brazil and generally i buy my games from STEAM, with the holiday discounts vavle is offering, i decided to buy all the civilization package, but to my surprise the game is bloqued for Brazil!! i contacted valve, and they said that this depends on the game developers...

So, how can i buy your games here? i really want to have my copy of civ 4 and expansions... But i only want to buy on steam, i hate having to swap dvds and such, besides it is rare for producers to release games at Brazil

It would be nice if Valve would tell us a week ahead of time what games would be on sale, and what the price would be. I don't know if this is possible, but I'd really like to see the community push them to do something like this. It may even help drive up their sales if people could plan on buying some of their much wanted games for cheaper :)

That sort of defeats the point of a sale, does it not? Why would anyone pay full price if they knew way ahead of time a sale was coming?

Woah, sure glad I happened to randomly check this thread.
Last week I felt like playing an RTS ( something that happens about once in two years lol ) and while browsing the store I decided to grab Dawn of War since I had heard good things about it. And being such a sucker for deals and packs, I decided I might as well grab the Platinum Edition instead of only the Gold since it would save me 10 buck should I like the game and decide I wanted more. I decided to pass on Soulstorm, though, since the price felt too high for just one expansion. Didn't really plan on getting it anytime soon.

That situation obviously just changed. This deal is awesome, and I had to jump on it since I had no idea how long it would last :D

I find it annoying that even though Steam distribution provides no manuals, packaging or disks it's more expensive than buying it retail.

For example I'm buying Dawn Of War 2 ltd edition steelbook from Play.com for £24.99 with a exclusive unlock code whereas steam is selling it standard for £34.99 with NOTHING extra... where's the encouragement to buy via steam ???

If Steam had exclusive content for games then I would seriously consider using it for non Valve games, until then I'm afraid retail wins.

It's even more embarrasing for Steam since DoWII requires Steam anyway, so he'll get his extra content, at a lower price, for the software to come from the same place. (Steam).

Why would you use Steam to purchase your Valve games, considering that that just about every single Valve title can be purchased significantly cheaper in retail as well ... and you will get a pretty box, quick-start manual, DVDs to save you some download-time and you will have to add it to your Steam client anyways?

Just about every branch of Amazon (.com, .de, .fr and I believe even .co.uk) frequently sells every single Valve-game cheaper than in the Valve store and ships it to you for free for example ... and shopping around you will find even better deals at other offline and online retailers. There really is no benefit to buying anything via Valve's store unless there is a weekend deal and even then you might still be able to get it cheaper in retail (considering that some items are 80% more expensive than retail and Valve might give you e.g. 60% off during a weekend deal).

Wish more number of retail games were available for Steam Activation.. :D I usually don't buy from steam unless it's on weekend deal or cheaper... I won't buy a retail games without steam activation though. I move a lot, cant afford to lug bunch of DVDs.. :(

The History Channel: Battle for the Pacific
Not available in Australia, Japan, and New Zealand.

This appears to have changed, as it shows up for sale in Japan priced $19.99 as The History Channel®: Battle for the Pacific (AP), so I guess that's a special Asia Pacific version. Wonder what's different about it (although I'm not interested in buying it myself at present).

Oh, and Lost Planet Extreme Conditions is back too (Japan obviously). Priced $49.99 (too expensive for my liking, but nice to see it's back again).

Nice thread, thanks. Just picked up Advent Rising (already owned, but too tempting at $9.99 to not buy in Steam) and Arx Fatalis ($4.99? How could I pass it up).

I agree with msoya on the first page. I both love and hate this thread, heh. Especially considering I'm presently out of work and probably shouldn't be wasting my money on video games....nah, that's crazy talk.

That might very well be, but then again, I probably won't find that out now ... while I usually enjoy supporting indie developers, I don't really want to help anyone playing Valve's little "let's screw Europe, they won't notice" game. This is a matter of principle.

And it's rather hard to get excited about a deal that reduces the price by about the exact amount that one was overcharged by before.

I did enjoy the occasional tower defense game in its time and I'm sure I would enjoy this one, according to the reviews it seems to be the best of its kind. Still $20 is still rather steep for what is usually a freeware game, even if its very, very polished.

But as a EU citizens I won't be jumping up and down in joy over this deal, considering that it just brings down the price to what the rest of the world is paying without this sale or what I could pay at any given time if I simply purchased it via Direct2Drive or Greenhouse or any other distributor of this game that is not Steam ...

... if the EU price were corrected it would most certainly be tempted, but since it won't be, I most likely won't buy it any time soon.

You (and a few others) don't need to hijack thread after thread to make your point though.

What is your problem? How is this hijacking?
The "sale" brings down the game price to its regular price on Direct2Drive or PlayGreenhouse for some Europeans, the Direct2Drive version even can (and actually has to) be activated on Steam. So this is not necessarily a good deal for Europeans (especially in countries with low or no VAT on internet purchases)!
There recently was a very similar deal on Direct2Drive: 25% off of $19.99 - even for Europeans - a much better deal for quite a few people, and I'm sure similar deals will show up again. So how is pointing out that a recently announced deal is not a good deal for everyone, in a thread about deals, "hijacking"?

I saw the offer about an hour and a half ago and I thought "Wth! Awesome game, I gotta have it when it's this cheap! Just within my budget!" but before I bought it I had to pay some bills. When I came back with my credit card in my hand I sat myself in front of the computer, pressed 'Add to Cart' (Note: I never clicked down steam, so it still said 22,49 or something like that) but when I did I noticed that it took the official price. I said "What the hell?!", went back but then I didn't see an offer. I restarted Steam and it was still gone...

Taken from Wikipedia:
"Guam (/ˈgwɑːm/ (help·info); Chamorro: Guåhån), officially the Territory of Guam, is an island in the western Pacific Ocean and is an organized, unincorporated insular area of the United States. It is one of five U.S. territories with an established civilian government."

They'll be up eventually, I'm making sure that it also applied to other US territories as I'll be using (trying to at least) "United States (50 states only)", "United States (50 states and territories)", or [for not available] "US territories" instead of listing every one that's affected.

It's 50, not 51.

People like to read just some words in a paragraph. ON PAPER, there are 50 states. ON PRACTICE there are 51. Otherwise we wouldn't be doing Taxes with U.S. Federal papers and not just Taxes from PR.

Also, let me get a little in detail about voting to being a state. No matter how many times Puertoricans vote to be, or not to be a state, it's the U.S. Congress who has the final word. Even if in the voting, we decide to be a state, the Congress can choose not to make us one, and vice-versa. So, our voting powers on that one are null. It's just something to make political zealots and blind fans a little occupied. Go to any U.S. territory, and see if they got U.S. Citizenship from birth. ;)

Sorry for getting off-topic guys, I just dislike when ignorant people, like to bash others for nothing.

Thanks, any chance you got the previous prices for Pyroblazer?

sciss0rz. Is Puerto Rico labeled as part of the UK in Steam? Because Shellshock 2, was released for the UK on Feb 13 and for the USA on Feb 24, if I'm not mistaken. But I was able to buy it on the 13th (I didn't until I read some reviews first, which were not favorable, though Shellshock 1 is on my fav list).

Thanks in advance.
I really have no idea where, if there even is a certain area, that Puerto Rico is being lumped into but it's not the UK. You can access EA but not Rockstar. In the UK they have R*, but no EA. I've seen both PEGI and ESRB ratings in the Puerto Rican storefront which just makes it more confusing. On top of that, Grand Ages Rome pre-ordering is available worldwide except in North America and it's not available to pre-order yet in Puerto Rico...

I've already checked out some bigger catalogs, but when half the links in the storefront load blank (and it's getting worse by the day) it's hard to look into. Hang tight, I'll eventually get it.

I thought it was 29,99 as well. I'm not exactly sure though

Some of the reviews that I read complained about the $30 price tag, so that seems very likely.
It's rather interesting that this is one of the few games that is now cheaper in the EU than elsewhere ... now if it just were a good game :(

For a Metascore of 48/100 (and a 18+ PEGI rating, lol, this is just for scissorz giggles). It isn't worth even 30$ lol. Although I do like some low scoring games, like Kane & Lynch, though this one I like mostly for it's story. Plus the guy with the glasses (I keep forgetting his name) looks like the guy from Fat Liar, just with a goatee and long hair.

Now I'm not sure what's going with The Last Remnant in Japan. We have the purchase button back, making preorder possible, yet I was told by Steam support that pre-ordering was not going to be offered in Japan (but the game would get released in April over Steam). So, if the purchase button vanishes again between now and April 10th, don't be surprised, I guess.

@veli64, what country are you in? If you're getting a "Site Error" message, chances are the game is not sold in your region. Check out the regional restrictions post linked in the first one.

Wanted: Weapons of Fate (http://store.steampowered.com/app/21070/) has been released. There's only a price only for North Americans. Everywhere else is missing a price, has invalid subscription numbers and is missing a release date. I haven't heard anything negative about gog.com so far and neither am I an employee of the site. I have an account there, but so far I haven't bought a single game from GOG. Since the prices at GOG don't exceed $9.99, I don't think this is even an argument. With that said, the catalogue of games is still far superior on Steam.

As for Far Cry, I agree. That is not a good old game. Far Cry is one overrated piece of ♥♥♥♥.
