That's odd, they do have my local currency, EEK, which will soon be... obliterated, euros finally arrived here. Are you sure they charge you in USD although you can see your own currency? Well I prefer Steam anytime, only bought Kudos: Rock Legends with a discount from there a long time ago and I can't seem to remmember if they charged me in USD. Would re-buy it off Steam anytime, if it would become available.

It got 2 daily deals, when you could get it for $7 I think.

During the rest of the sales it was 25% off.

I got mine for around £7 so it was a steal. It was 75% off. :)

Are you sure they charge you in USD although you can see your own currency?

100% certain. They don't tell you that until during the check out process. They also only send you confirmation receipts with the price in your local currency, so you'll not have an accurate record from them of how much you actually paid.

Oh and as an example of how bad their regional pricing can be (these are prices for Japan)...

Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition on Steam: $49.99
Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition on Impulse: $85.99

Interesting! How come I've never heard about this store? Is it good?

If you're in North America, possibly. But for international customers, Impulse is horrible. The regional price hikes they try to get away with on certain titles is daylight robbery. They blame it on publishers, yet all other DD services will sell the same games for considerably cheaper.

Further to that, they've been known to double charge international customers for pre-orders and then not give access to the game until several days after they've given access to North American customers (regardless of the release date stated on their store page).

They also charge you in USD (and not your local currency) at the rate set by the operator of your payment method, thus the price they display to you by default is often different to the price you actually pay.

All in all, if you're an international customer, avoid Impulse unless you can't buy the game for cheaper elsewhere. And as it is, $7.50 isn't a very good deal on Blacklight consider that it's been discounted to as little as $3.00 in the past.
I see... Thanks for the great answer! :) Indeed the prices aren't that good here in Brazil and, to make things worse, most of the good titles are unavailable here (even when the same games are available through Steam).

What about TAGES? it's seriously scares me off of buying it

I don't see why you have 3 installs and after 30 days you get an install back, how many times do you intend installing the game. Even if you are the unluckiest person in the world and you have really bad computer trouble, and have to install the game 3 times in one month, after thirty days you can install it again.

Well that's how I think it works anyway.

AnubisArc999

Seems like the worst DRM possible.

Inb4 = It is no big deal!

I have 270 other games that I can play on Steam, clearly there is plently of choice of games without overly strict DRM that a gamer can play.

Also, it is a matter of principle, you vote with your wallet.

paratech2008
01-13-2011, 02:24 PM
I have the game as well and getting an Install a month after using 3 installs should be acceptable if you want the game.

Look, people pay more than $5 to rent PS3/360/Wii games, if you play through this game one time, it will be worth the $5 spent.

paratech2008
01-13-2011, 02:26 PM
How it paying $5 for a game that gives back installs @ 1 per 30 days after using 3 installs that bad?

It costs more to do a 7 day rental at a video store of a PS3/360/Wii game.

Even if you play through it one time, it will be worth $5!

Limited activations goes against one of the primary principles of Steam - that games on Steam are locked to your account, and not a machine.

Pity, because I loved the original version and would love to buy it.

paratech2008
01-13-2011, 02:32 PM
I'm just saying its silly to get bent out of shape over what at the worst is a rental.

One can argue about DRM when it has limited installs and you can't get them back, or always online DRM for single player when you may want to play in offline mode, but to argue about a DRM that at the very worst will give you back an install every 30 days after you use them up, up to 3 installs is a bit silly. Exactly how many times will you need to reinstall this game on a monthly basis?

Who's getting bent out of shape? The OP is just voicing his refusal to buy a game that still contains unnecessary DRM. I don't see anything particularly emotional in his words.

Ravenger
01-13-2011, 02:42 PM
It's the principle for me - thus far and no further. My biggest beef is that each layer of DRM adds another point of failure. I'm reasonably confident that Steam will be around for a while, but third party DRM systems? They come and go.

There have been cases of DRM activations servers being taken offline and peoples entire music or video collections becoming unusable - or at least untransferrable to a new machine or OS.

So I'm willing to put up with Steam, but I won't buy any single player games that use limited activations.

Seems overkill to me to have limited activations on a game that's been out a while and is on sale cheap anyway.

Still my Steam sale backlog is huge, and I've got plenty of other games to play that don't make me beg permission to install. Plus I've got the original version of Riddick on disc which just has a CD check, and which also has quicksave.

I can't play GTA 4 which I bought on deal because of the DRM and of course, GFWL with all the signing up its simply not worth it. The same applies for Red faction guerilla - I just can't get it to work.

I have no Experience with TAGES but I do not want to, so another no sale here.

Raefzm
01-13-2011, 04:28 PM
there will be NO purchase here either. Regardless that you get 1 activation per month, its, as many others posted, a matter of principals aswell. I'd never buy a activation limited product, even if it had the biggest sale. I just think its horrible. We've got steam already (wich is indeed more than just a crappy drm ofcourse)
with it already limiting the opportunities to play, no chance in hell i'd purchase something with TAGES

rumcoke
01-13-2011, 04:47 PM
I hate DRM as much as the next guy. However, you get 2 fun games for $5 -- since a remastered Butcher Bay comes with the purchase. Very tempting deal despite the DRM.

01-13-2011, 05:18 PM
I'm frustrated too, but I bought the games anyway. I'd be totally willing to put up with DRM if it worked, but as it stands, it's more of an annoyance. At least it's not that always connected DRM, that's the worst.

Tages installs two system-level device drivers to make itself work. That alone is unacceptable to me.

The fact that their web site promotes their DRM with both arrogance and seriously broken grammar doesn't exactly fill me with confidence either.

I was about to hit "add to cart" (meh, it's only five bucks) until I saw the warning. Chalk up another lost sale.

Draek
01-13-2011, 05:50 PM
At least it doesn't ask for specific words from the manual ala the original PoP, I guess.

I actually bought Riddick during the Xmas '09 sale, and only realized the TAGES detail later. I've never even installed it, I guess I could've tried to get a refund, but I guess now is too late for that ;)

01-13-2011, 06:14 PM
Tages is fine. I use Tages without issue in several different games. The Riddick games are pretty awful anyway so I wouldn't recommend it based upon the game rather then poor incorrect assumptions about Tages DRM.

fyi tages limits the amount of activations per month. Every consecutive month you are give additional to a maximum monthly limit. If you need to surpass said limit for whatever reason you can get more via support easily with a valid software key.

Wow, so this comes with Butcher's Bay? ... bargain!

Yeah. Note that it's a port using the Dark Athena engine and so has much higher System requirements. I had to turn off AA, ambient occlusion, and "16-bit color mode" (that's shader related or something) just to maintain a mostly good framerate at 1080p with a E8400 and GTS 250.

Be sure to find the texture settings and max them though - for some reason the game defaults to ugly low res textures.

Ninja Blade (http://store.steampowered.com/app/37010) - was $29.99, now $19.99 USD

Transformars: War for Cybertron (http://store.steampowered.com/app/42650) - was $39.99, now $29.99 USD

So glad I skipped these during the holiday sale. They're getting closer to what their holiday discounts were. I would have had to pay $15 for Ninja Blade and $20 for TF.

Ninja Blade is fun as hell from what I played on Onlive, but it really is dependant on a 360 controller since they never changed the buttons. TF has no poor multiplayer support so it's only really good for SP. Either way things like that make me only want the games for $10 or less no matter how much fun they are.

I learned form last year that the post-holiday period is also a great time for price drops. Titan Quest Gold was around $10 during the 2009 holiday sale. I got in January 2010 for $5. Always pays to wait on items you aren't sure about :D

Personally, a sale is a sale to me. Cheap games = win. Thumbs up if you agree.

Soon Halloween will be regionally restricted and I will have to hide my pumpkins from the Police.

So yeah, thumbs up for the "a sale is a sale." Let them make as many sales as they want, sure hasn't done me no harm. Well... apart from me being broke and only eating bread for a couple of weeks.

Solution: Let Valve add a box to Steam which says: "If you do not wish to see holiday sales from holidays which orignated from outside your own country, then please check here." Their loss, not mine. I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to get a sale because of this. Or at least I do not see it as enough of a reason.

Too bad there probably won't be many more of these big sales, well atleast this big. Like "The Steam exclusive monthly sale!" or something, since people would just stop buying so much, they'd get too used to the sales and have no reason to "grab'em while you can," which would obviously be bad for business.

Why care anyways about what the sale is called, its not like calling a sale a religious holiday sale means it has anything to do with religion. I'm sure there are Muslims, Jews, Atheists, and others who give and receive Christmas gifts.

...Actually, there's tons, and tons, and tons of them who do, are they hardcore into their religion/lack or religion? probably not if they are celebrating christmas (by giving/receiving gifts for that specific holiday), but doesn't mean they aren't a different religion or have lack of religion

Giving gifts at Christmas or candy to kids on Halloween has no religious significance.

Getting deals on Steam has no religious significance regardless of the holiday.

If Valve wanted to have sales on Islamic or Jewish holidays it wouldn't bother me, although it might bother Muslims or Jews.

In the US its $19.99, so its $6.80 for the US. I guess it was $5.00 if you prepurchased Dead Space 2.

So here in Brazil we get the prices from where? I used to think it was from US, there is a proper price list just from Brazil maybe?

I don't know. I still have games from the last sale that still need to be played. Only completely one so far. :(

Not just that for me, I've changed my philosophy on playing games. I used to buy all kinds of games and only play them for a short amount of time until I was over playing the game.

Now, I've changed and want to completely play the game. Look around and see everything the developers have to offer. Get my money's worth.

Unfortunately I'm still buying like my previous gaming philosophy.

I think I have 50+ games in my steam library that I haven't played all the way through yet.

I'm going to have to work on that.

And no, I've never played Puzzle Agent, I was told either by a review or by a friend of mine that it was a bit short for the price. But I do love Telltale, quality company.

Yeah. As I suggested to a friend who was thinking about it: wait until you see another $5 sale on the base version of WoW. Play that as a pseudo-single player ARPG for the free month you get with it. Better experience than Numen. And the limited time free subscription isn't an issue since Numen only has about ten hours of game play.

That's a link to a review that didn't have a big publisher pouring ca$h into their pockets to get a high score. This is also an MMO, so a review from launch isn't going to cover all the updates and expansions that molded the game to what it is now.

Here's a link to the Global Agenda (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17020) page with a demo (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17020) that is basically the full game, but restricts you from leveling past 15 I believe. Play it and judge for yourself.

Got my order in, but says processing, so I may not get a key, and just now it changed to say this: "Currently Not Available".

Thanks though :).

We are unable to perform the selected action. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Error Number: SIT_000002"

EDIT 2: I just got an email saying my key is ready, but the key is not there (at findmyorder), but the download link is, and the order now says completed, so maybe they switched from giving out keys and are using a digitalriver drm? or maybe they just did this to release the orders without giving a key? I guess there's only one way to find out.

Bah, someone just posted: "Download is useless..Installs steam, and while installing Metro, asks for a CD Key", oh well.

THQ has a sale going on at their site: http://store.thq.com/store/thq/en_US/list&parentCategoryID=&categoryID=54746400&resultsPerPage=35

Most THQ games are in there, including steamworks titles, none of them costs more than $10.
Too bad it seems to be US/NA only.

Too bad it seems to be US/NA only.

I found that out the hard way :(

Added Tales of Valor, DoW2, Darksiders and ATV vs MX to my shopping cart, it was like $35ish, the sale of my dreams!

Then I went to the checkout process and FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I used this list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Steam_titles) to confirm.
Now why would you do that when the list isn’t as accurate as the official support article (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601)?

Maybe Steam will get them later on. I have all the 2K games I want at the moment.

Check back later today, although the weekend deals and midweek madness sales aren't always weekly. They do have nine other deals going on right now independent of that, though.

It actually is reduced though it is kinda confusing. The pack includes Winter assault by itself for 59.99 and the Gold edition which is Dawn of War + Winter assault for $9.99. I am hoping to hear back from support soon I purchased Chaos Rising for $20 all of 10 minutes before it went on sale for $10. Hopefully they can honor the sale or something if not I guess I will have to hit my head against a wall for ordering on lunch break instead of after work

I don't know why I added all the DOW games to my wishlist, given that the package prices don't add up with the individual prices I think I should abandon this one and wait for weekend deal.

jello
02-09-2011, 12:40 AM
The deal is good actually. It’s just that the package prices are messed up like they are so often when a deal happens.
You don’t have to buy a package when you can buy the games separately. Easy as that.

A little thinking before buying has never been a bad thing.

Pyrii

But the stupid thing is, the WInter Assualt item doesn't exist except in packages where it's £40 or £40 down from £80 (ROFLMAOCOPTER). So they're trying to rip people off with non-existent packages bumping up the price.

Based on what I've read about it, it's pretty decent, and based on the history of prices with the first HAWX, it's unlikely to get any lower in price on Steam any time soon.

I'd snag it up, but I've been spending money on hardware lately.

Based on this (http://www.supercheats.com/guides/tom-clancys-hawx-2)information, there is 20 missions, another site suggested that it adds up to about 4-5 hours gameplay with no DLC, the source makes no mention of what difficulty that applies to, I'm assuming the multi-player and co-op were the main focus.
