Here is a list of tips me and my friend used to help our dedicated server operate at optimal performance.
1. When you start the dedicated server, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Under the 'Processes" List, change the "hlds.exe" from Normal Priority to "High"
(You do this by right-clicking on it, scrolling down to priority, and selecting "High")*
2. If your computer has less than a gig of RAM, don't put any more than 14 slots on the server. Your computer can only handle so many.
3. Make sure to close any other programs while using it (yahoo, msn, aim, etc.), because it makes more internet have to be diverted away from the server into this.
MOTD
To change the MOTD, you will have to
1. Locate the
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\account name\counter-strike\cstrike
Thats just an example, it can be for any game.
2. Find the notepad where it says motd.txt
3. Change it.
* With Windows Professional, you have to click 'Task Manager' after you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
I hope this helped some people.
