Hi, I am working on a basic model trying to learn a few things to get myself started in more advanced modeling. I am trying to create a simple earth with an outer cloud layer different then the texture file of the main earth.

So far, In xsi mod tool, I have created one sphere, added a uv map, applied a texture of the earth, set a Scroll proxie to the vmt so that the earth texture scrolls around the "core" of the earth.

second, I have added another sphere, not hollow (because I dont know how to, or know if I have to) slightly bigger then the "core" sphere, that I hope to apply a second texture to, but still keep the model as one file.

next though, is where I am in a hole, I am now trying to make a secondary outer "layer" into the same model, that uses a different texture file, that I can apply a transparent cloud layer that will scroll at a different speed then the earth bottom core. But for the life of me, I cannot find out how to have XSI use two different textures for the pieces that I want to freeze or transform into one, so I can export the .smd for compiling, together.

I have yet to make a single model .smd in XSI that "looks" for two different texture paths. All I seem to be able to do is make 1 model that only looks for one texture. I have tried creating a cluster, or group, but to be honest I really have no idea how that is supposed to work, and the help files really don't get me anywhere.

Is there a tutorial, or a kind person that is willing to possibly voice chat, or type how to create the clusters that will allow me to apply different targas in XSI to the two parts of the one model that I am creating. Any help would be insanely apprecaited. That way I can export the single model and set up the .qc file to the two texture locations to the .vtf files.. I hope this is even possible. Thank you for the assistance.

HEy i remember doing something similar about a year ago. but let me see if i understand what your saying...

2 spheres, each with their own unique skins/textures, merged together, compiled as a single .mdl?

I don't know about xsi but in 3ds max i think its done via map channels if xsi has a similar tool id say use that

after a quick Google and not a clue what i was looking for as I'm a xsi ?????? i think that the equivalent in xsi is called texture tags.

Clusters. You have one "main" texture and then you have other textures for clusters. You select the polygons and go to Edit - Clusters to create a cluser. Then when you have first created the basic UV map for the whole thing you select the cluster with Select - Cluster and go to Render - Get Texture, etc.
