Quakeworld In Action

Not sure if you want to play Quakeworld? Take a look at these videos and decide for yourself.

Technical Questions

I'm having trouble playing Quake with the supplied executables, they crash/show up blank/don't work/etc
The supplied executables for Quake were designed for Windows 95 and first generation graphics cards, and have not been updated in over 10 years. If you keep running into problems running Quake, please see the section of this FAQ on Quake Source Ports.

Why doesn't the mouse work?
Quake and Quakeworld predates standardized freelook variables. In order to mouselook, you must open the console and type +mlook. If this becomes annoying, you can create a file called autoexec.cfg within your Quake program directory located in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1\ that contains the word +mlook in plain text and nothing else.

How do I change resolutions in GLQuake/GLQuakeworld?
Add the following to the command line parameters for GLQuake:

-width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32

This will launch GLQuake in 1024x768x32bpp mode. For other resolutions, simply replace the appropriate numbers. As you might suspect, this is kind of a screwy way to do such a simple thing, and I highly suggest using a source port instead of bothering with GLQuake.

Where's the soundtrack?
Non-existant. Although it is possible to make redbook audio work without the actual CD, id Software didn't have time to do it. However, the good news is that the soundtrack is avalible for download at Galbadia Hotel at the links below. If my memory serves correctly, if you want the tracks to match up correctly, you will probably want to burn a blank first track, since this is where the data was stored on the origional CD.

Quake (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/3488)
Quake Mission Pack 1 - Scourge of Armagon (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/767)
Quake Mission Pack 2 - Dissolution of Eternity (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/768)

What's the difference between Quake and Quakeworld?
Quake was historically used for playing Single Player and LAN network games, while Quakeworld was the preferred client for playing over the Internet, since it used a newer netcode which had superior performance over the Internet (and incedently was the basis of Half Life's networking code). However, unless you like manually typing in IP's, you'll probably never need to start Quakeworld from Steam.

Online Play

Do people still play online?
Is this game worth buying for multiplayer?
Yes and yes. Although it has a tiny public scene compared to the other games, Quakeworld has perhaps the biggest dueling and pickup scene of the classic first three games, and has plenty of tournaments and rookie tournaments to boot. There are a few public servers up, but most serious action is coordinated through IRC. If it's your first time playing, however, be prepared for a bruising, since most players have been playing for over 10 years. But think about it, if a game is 10 years old and still being played, it must be good, right? =) If you think you're up to the challenge, the community is welcoming, mature and respectful, and would be glad to help you climb the skill curve.

How do I play online?
The easy way to play online is to download nQuake. nQuake is, hands down, the absolute best way for new players to experience Quakeworld online, as it has much of the 'hard part' of configuration out of the way. A link to nQuake is given below under Source Ports. When you install nQuake, you will be asked for the location of your pak1.pak, it is located in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1\.

You have other options avalible to you, of course. Steam Quakeworld is perfectly capable of playing online if you connect to an IP through the console, (though I don't think that server browsers support it yet, and it's pretty archaic as far as clients go), there are other Quakeworld clients avalible as well, and of course external server browsers.

Maps, Modifications and Addons

What is a source port?
A very long time ago, the source code to Quake was made free under the terms of the GNU Public License. Since then, many people have made improved versions of the Quake engine which make the game look pretty and enhance its multiplayer capabilities. However, these programs are not supported by Valve Software nor id Software, so if something breaks (unlikely) you get to keep both pieces. Check the bottom of this FAQ for links to some popular source ports.

Are source ports Steam-compatable?
There is no easy way to launch a source port from inside Steam (It's possible, but not really worthwhile imho). However, you don't need to, as all a source port needs to function are the contents of C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1\. Simply install your source port of choice, and copy that directory to your source port's home directory, and you'll be good to go.

What source ports are avalible?
The following are the most popular source ports that are actively maintained.

Darkplaces (http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/): The eye-candy source port. Makes Quake look ridiculously pretty. Supports Quake and Quakeworld all in one program.
Tenebrae (http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/): For when ridiculously pretty isn't enough, Tenebrae introduces a Doom3-esque lighting model. Combine with high-resolution textures and models for something you swear came out of 2003.
Fitzquake (http://www.celephais.net/fitzquake/): This source port is perfect for those of you who want an updated and fixed version of the original GLQuake without all of the "chrome" of other modern source ports.
ezQuake (http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/): The number one client if you're serious about playing online. Includes a builtin server browser. automatic demo recording, and all that fun stuff.
nQuake (http://nquake.sourceforge.net/): This is actually ezQuake prepackaged with tons of custom graphics, maps, location files, and everything else you need to make your first online experience an awesome one. If you want to play online and have no idea what to download, get this.

What Server Browsers work with Quake?
No server browser supports Steam Quakeworld out of the box at the moment. However, these still work great with source ports, which is what you should be using anyway.

QTracker (http://www.qtracker.com/): Probably the nicest and least-bloated server browser out today.
HLSW (http://www.hlsw.org/): An alternative server browser. Not only can it browse servers, but it has builtin rcon support and can create custom server lists. A little tough to set up, though, and its filtering options aren't as nice as QTracker's.

What about modifications?
Quake had many modifications released during its lifetime. Two major mods of note are Threewave Capture the Flag and Team Fortress. CTF games are hard to come by, but there are still many public TF servers open with regular players. Unfortuniatly, both mods have been victims of Fileplanet's incessant reorganizations, and the links on the main webpages of both mods no longer function, but fortuneatly mirrors are provided below:

Threewave Capture the Flag (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/3wave421d.zip) + Maps (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/3wctf301.zip) + More Maps (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/3wctfc40.zip): The original, celebrated, CTF mod, for not just Quake but for the entire FPS genre. Know your history.
Team Fortress (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/tf28.zip): There's a reason why Valve calls it "Team Fortress Classic". Includes many of the movment tricks that Valve eventually patched out of TFC, so if you've been fiending for some old school TFC, this help you get more than your fix.

What about worthwhile maps?
Quakeworld has a number of good third party maps that are often played. Note that nQuake comes with all of these and more preinstalled:

aerowalk (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/aerowalk.zip): Lovingly crafted by Preacher, this is ridiculously popular duel map. Often imitated, never duplicated.
ztndm3 (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/ztndm3.zip): Made by the legendary ztn, this is another good duel map which sees a lot of play.
povdmm4 (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/povdmm4.zip): A true test of skill. Players start with full health, armor and ammo and try to get as many frags as possible on the other player. With nowhere to hide, and only two yellow armors on the map (plus dropped backpacks from dead players which hold a modest amount of health), the tiniest difference in aiming skill can make all the difference.
endif (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/endif.zip): Need even more of a challenge? In this map, both players are dropped into a very tall cube and given infinite rockets. The only catch is that you can only kill the other player when he's in the air.

Very nice. nQuake doesn't come with TF and CTF, but it does come with Frogbot. The nQuake installer should also automatically detect id1/pak1.pak from within the steam folder (as of v1.7b) so it is a simple process of clicking next, next, next.

If the id1/pak1.pak file isn't automatically detected please report it here so it can be fixed:

The IRC channel for QW is #quakeworld on irc.quakenet.org. Alternatively, there is #qwrookie, which is for newer players.

This guide doesn't say anything about the Mission Packs though. I can run Quake fine in normal mode, but the gfx are severly screwed in GL mode. The Mission packs look like GL Quake, thus are messed up, except there's no option to run them in normal. What can I do to fix this?

Please , update info at top about major difference between Q1 and QW - rotating angle.

In original quake it was 1 byte(256 states) variable, so rotating always will be not smooth and not for desired angle , but for nearest angle in circle divided by this 256 states. It's hard to play and aim with this fact.

In QW it was updated for perfect aiming to 2 bytes variable so circle now divided by 65536 sectors and rotating+aiming became more smooth.

Also, Q1 won't playable at 256 kbits network with more then 4 players , extremely high traffic and speed usage.

http://quakeone.com/qrack/

Please add qRack to the list of source ports - it's quite popular and can be made to look retro while still running high resolutions (and scaled HUD) [This is one thing that bugged me about many of the other source ports out there]

I pray someone will read this and know the answer. I cant change the resolution of the game at all.

But the thing is what command line? Does it mean the in game console? I type -width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32 in console and it reads unknown command -width. So I figured maybe I'll set launch options in steam but it still had no affect. Does anyone know where I type to change the resolution?

I believe that command line refers to the shortcut you use to launch the game.

Edit the shortcut to include the parameter.

Something like this from a Desktop Shortcut.

Right Click the shortcut,
Select Properties

This Brings up the Properties Sheet for the item.

In the TARGET section is the command line where the shortcut looks for the executable.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Quake\quake.exe"

You would change that to look something like what is below;

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Quake\quake.exe" -width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32

Then Click apply, and OK

Next time you launch the game it should change the res for you.

I am not sure how to do this inside of STEAM, but you get the idea.

Anyone else that has a better way, I would love in on it too.

PEACE

Tried using the described method to run Quake 1 with Tenebrae, and it just crashes upon loading. GLQuake also simply crashes upon loading. The only thing I can get to work is the regular "Launch Quake" option through Steam.

Running WinXP and an NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT with new drivers. Suggestions anyone?

Is there no way to run the soundtrack from the HD instead of burning a disc? Surely there's some coding somewhere that tells the game where to look for audio tracks, you could just manually change that. Anyone know?

Alternatively, perhaps you could trick it with Daemon Tools by making a disc image of the soundtrack, but then you'd also have to be able to tell it what CD drive to look in.

Darkplaces engine supports music in .mp3(I think),and .ogg (rename track01,track02,ect as the music file's names).Just need to put the files in "id1/sound/music"

Anyone know how to edit the command line parameters in Windows 7? I don't get the "Target:" line under the .exe's properties like in earlier versions of Windows (that's were it was before, wasn't it?). It's still there under a shortcut's properties menu, but using a shortcut with steam won't work. Maybe my memory is off, but if anyone knows to do this, that would be great.

I figured this would the thread to add this.
If you want the soundtrack for Quake 1 in EZquake/Nquake and you have winamp and the track in a playable format here's a script to have it autoload and play the title, intermission and level tracks appropriately.

Make a proper playlist .m3u in winamp with the tracks in proper order as they appear on the CD (actual CD tracks 2-11 should numbered 1-10 in winamp) and put it in the same directory as ost.cfg such as in C:\quake\id1\ If you use another directory, look at the script and change the directory it loads. Files can whatever winamp plays obviously, ogg, flac, mp3, ac3 or whatever. Or you can rig winamps playlist to the actual CD if you have it. Doesn't matter.

Remember to set the winamp directory up in ezquake/nquake as well by setting mp3_winamp_dir to the path. Also turn manual advance off in winamp by rightclicking repeat button. Yes it tells you this in the script too.

Create ost.cfg, paste this inside, put a line that has "exec ost.cfg" in your autoexec.cfg somewhere or in whichever cfg you load with ezstart or command line or whatever.

// put double slashes in front of that if you want to turn it off music on start or and use +set OST 1 in your shortcut instead. To enable once in game if you do above just type the following command in the console.
set OST "1"

// Or just set mp3_volume 0

// Right click on the repeat button in winamp to turn manual advance on to loop one track otherwise it will advance as you play.

//start winamp, load playlist, turn on repeat, turn off shuffle.
//Create quake1.m3u playlist in proper track order, change next line to reflect directory settings.
if $OST == 1 then "mp3_startwinamp; mp3_loadplaylist C:\quake\id1\quake1.m3u; mp3_repeat on; mp3_shuffle off"

//play theme track when game starts
if $OST == 1 then mp3_playtrack 1

//when you exit the game
alias f_exit "mp3_stop"

//intermission screen
alias f_mapend "if $OST == 1 then mp3_playtrack 2

//when a new map starts
alias f_newmap "if $OST == 1 then exec ostlist.cfg"Then make ostlist.cfg in the same directory as ost.cfg and paste this in.

//names must be lowercase

if $mapname == start then mp3_playtrack 3
if $mapname == dm1 then mp3_playtrack 4
if $mapname == dm2 then mp3_playtrack 4
if $mapname == dm3 then mp3_playtrack 5
if $mapname == dm4 then mp3_playtrack 1
if $mapname == dm5 then mp3_playtrack 4
if $mapname == dm6 then mp3_playtrack 4

if $mapname == e1m2 then mp3_playtrack 7
if $mapname == e1m3 then mp3_playtrack 8
if $mapname == e1m4 then mp3_playtrack 4
if $mapname == e1m5 then mp3_playtrack 10
if $mapname == e1m6 then mp3_playtrack 3
if $mapname == e1m7 then mp3_playtrack 6
if $mapname == e1m8 then mp3_playtrack 9

if $mapname == e2m1 then mp3_playtrack 5
if $mapname == e2m2 then mp3_playtrack 7
if $mapname == e2m3 then mp3_playtrack 8
if $mapname == e2m4 then mp3_playtrack 4
if $mapname == e2m5 then mp3_playtrack 10
if $mapname == e2m6 then mp3_playtrack 3
if $mapname == e2m7 then mp3_playtrack 6

if $mapname == e3m1 then mp3_playtrack 5
if $mapname == e3m2 then mp3_playtrack 7
if $mapname == e3m3 then mp3_playtrack 8
if $mapname == e3m4 then mp3_playtrack 7
if $mapname == e3m5 then mp3_playtrack 10
if $mapname == e3m6 then mp3_playtrack 3
if $mapname == e3m7 then mp3_playtrack 4

if $mapname == e4m1 then mp3_playtrack 5
if $mapname == e4m2 then mp3_playtrack 7
if $mapname == e4m3 then mp3_playtrack 8
if $mapname == e4m4 then mp3_playtrack 4
if $mapname == e4m5 then mp3_playtrack 10
if $mapname == e4m6 then mp3_playtrack 3
if $mapname == e4m7 then mp3_playtrack 6
if $mapname == e4m8 then mp3_playtrack 9

Enjoy.

*edit: Apparently current ezquake/nquake doesn't seem to have mp3_startwinamp command anymore from what I've seen, the script is tested otherwise to work, but you might need to start winamp up before quake depending on version is all. I added that afterwards and had winamp open the entire time anyhow. It does load the playlist and everything as expected and everything else, no reason to take it out or anything either.

I do realize the script could possibly be cut down so that the list contains just ten lines for any of the levels that use the same track, but it was easier for me to just plunk that down quickly and do some simple replaces.

Hi,

I hope this will be a helpful post.
in a nutshell:

Quake: modern quake engines focus on singleplayer and awesome graphics. www.quakeone.com

Quakeworld: totally focused on Online competition. www.quakeworld.nu

Very helpful information on Quakeworld and Quake (http://www.quakeworld.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5529)
nQuake (http://nquake.com) is the recommended Quakeworld installation. you just have to point your Steam quake installation to have the full game working with all the awesomeness of 2012 quakeworld.

It's actually very easy to do that. Supposing you can you already get your sourceport running in the first place just add shift right click the executable, select "copy as path". In steam go to the games menu, add non steam game to library, don't even bother waiting for the list, click browse, ctrl+v to paste the game path, ok. click add these games. Done. Add any arguments you would a shortcut in the target section after you right click and select properties on the game in steam.

In steam go to the games menu, add non steam game to library, don't even bother waiting for the list, click browse, ctrl+v to paste the game path, ok. click add these games. Done. Add any arguments you would a shortcut in the target section after you right click and select properties on the game in steam.

Yeah I've got many non-steam games added, but I thought the poster was implying that I could add this custom engine application to the Quake launcher (you know, the one little sub-menu that pops up after you launch quake- lets you select quake, gl quake, quakeworld, gl quakeworld).

I'd like to recommend another source port. It's "UQE Quake". It's the best way to experience classic/vanilla quake. It has some postprocessing effects though, but doesn't kill the original feel of the game (as awesome as realtime lighning in dark places is, it really doesn't feel like classic quake anymore). The port also lets you load the music without the cd and supports mp3, ogg and wav formats. I think it's the best way to experience the original game.

UQE Quake does not place textures properly. http://www.quaddicted.com/engines/software_vs_glquake#non-square_pixels

And that dreamy blur looks awful. Quake is not a game with unicorns.

Quakespasm and DirectQ do all the things you mentioned (apart from the post-processing) but faithfully. ;)
