Technical Questions
I'm having trouble playing Quake with the supplied executables, they crash/show up blank/don't work/etc
The supplied executables for Quake were designed for Windows 95 and first generation graphics cards, and have not been updated in over 10 years. If you keep running into problems running Quake, please see the section of this FAQ on Quake Source Ports.
Why doesn't the mouse work?
Quake and Quakeworld predates standardized freelook variables. In order to mouselook, you must open the console and type +mlook. If this becomes annoying, you can create a file called autoexec.cfg within your Quake program directory located in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1\ that contains the word +mlook in plain text and nothing else.
How do I change resolutions in GLQuake/GLQuakeworld?
Add the following to the command line parameters for GLQuake:
-width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32
This will launch GLQuake in 1024x768x32bpp mode. For other resolutions, simply replace the appropriate numbers. As you might suspect, this is kind of a screwy way to do such a simple thing, and I highly suggest using a source port instead of bothering with GLQuake.
Where's the soundtrack?
Non-existant. Although it is possible to make redbook audio work without the actual CD, id Software didn't have time to do it. However, the good news is that the soundtrack is avalible for download at Galbadia Hotel at the links below. If my memory serves correctly, if you want the tracks to match up correctly, you will probably want to burn a blank first track, since this is where the data was stored on the origional CD.
Quake (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/3488)
Quake Mission Pack 1 - Scourge of Armagon (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/767)
Quake Mission Pack 2 - Dissolution of Eternity (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/768)
What's the difference between Quake and Quakeworld?
Quake was historically used for playing Single Player and LAN network games, while Quakeworld was the preferred client for playing over the Internet, since it used a newer netcode which had superior performance over the Internet (and incedently was the basis of Half Life's networking code). However, unless you like manually typing in IP's, you'll probably never need to start Quakeworld from Steam.
Online Play
Do people still play online?
Is this game worth buying for multiplayer?
Yes and yes. Although it has a tiny public scene compared to the other games, Quakeworld has perhaps the biggest dueling and pickup scene of the classic first three games, and has plenty of tournaments and rookie tournaments to boot. There are a few public servers up, but most serious action is coordinated through IRC. If it's your first time playing, however, be prepared for a bruising, since most players have been playing for over 10 years. But think about it, if a game is 10 years old and still being played, it must be good, right? =) If you think you're up to the challenge, the community is welcoming, mature and respectful, and would be glad to help you climb the skill curve.
How do I play online?
The easy way to play online is to download nQuake. nQuake is, hands down, the absolute best way for new players to experience Quakeworld online, as it has much of the 'hard part' of configuration out of the way. A link to nQuake is given below under Source Ports. When you install nQuake, you will be asked for the location of your pak1.pak, it is located in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1\.
You have other options avalible to you, of course. Steam Quakeworld is perfectly capable of playing online if you connect to an IP through the console, (though I don't think that server browsers support it yet, and it's pretty archaic as far as clients go), there are other Quakeworld clients avalible as well, and of course external server browsers.
Maps, Modifications and Addons
What is a source port?
A very long time ago, the source code to Quake was made free under the terms of the GNU Public License. Since then, many people have made improved versions of the Quake engine which make the game look pretty and enhance its multiplayer capabilities. However, these programs are not supported by Valve Software nor id Software, so if something breaks (unlikely) you get to keep both pieces. Check the bottom of this FAQ for links to some popular source ports.
Are source ports Steam-compatable?
There is no easy way to launch a source port from inside Steam (It's possible, but not really worthwhile imho). However, you don't need to, as all a source port needs to function are the contents of C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1\. Simply install your source port of choice, and copy that directory to your source port's home directory, and you'll be good to go.
What source ports are avalible?
The following are the most popular source ports that are actively maintained.
Darkplaces (http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/): The eye-candy source port. Makes Quake look ridiculously pretty. Supports Quake and Quakeworld all in one program.
Tenebrae (http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/): For when ridiculously pretty isn't enough, Tenebrae introduces a Doom3-esque lighting model. Combine with high-resolution textures and models for something you swear came out of 2003.
Fitzquake (http://www.celephais.net/fitzquake/): This source port is perfect for those of you who want an updated and fixed version of the original GLQuake without all of the "chrome" of other modern source ports.
ezQuake (http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/): The number one client if you're serious about playing online. Includes a builtin server browser. automatic demo recording, and all that fun stuff.
nQuake (http://nquake.sourceforge.net/): This is actually ezQuake prepackaged with tons of custom graphics, maps, location files, and everything else you need to make your first online experience an awesome one. If you want to play online and have no idea what to download, get this.
What Server Browsers work with Quake?
No server browser supports Steam Quakeworld out of the box at the moment. However, these still work great with source ports, which is what you should be using anyway.
QTracker (http://www.qtracker.com/): Probably the nicest and least-bloated server browser out today.
HLSW (http://www.hlsw.org/): An alternative server browser. Not only can it browse servers, but it has builtin rcon support and can create custom server lists. A little tough to set up, though, and its filtering options aren't as nice as QTracker's.
What about modifications?
Quake had many modifications released during its lifetime. Two major mods of note are Threewave Capture the Flag and Team Fortress. CTF games are hard to come by, but there are still many public TF servers open with regular players. Unfortuniatly, both mods have been victims of Fileplanet's incessant reorganizations, and the links on the main webpages of both mods no longer function, but fortuneatly mirrors are provided below:
Threewave Capture the Flag (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/3wave421d.zip) + Maps (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/3wctf301.zip) + More Maps (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/3wctfc40.zip): The original, celebrated, CTF mod, for not just Quake but for the entire FPS genre. Know your history.
Team Fortress (http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_multiplayer/tf28.zip): There's a reason why Valve calls it "Team Fortress Classic". Includes many of the movment tricks that Valve eventually patched out of TFC, so if you've been fiending for some old school TFC, this help you get more than your fix.
What about worthwhile maps?
Quakeworld has a number of good third party maps that are often played. Note that nQuake comes with all of these and more preinstalled:
aerowalk (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/aerowalk.zip): Lovingly crafted by Preacher, this is ridiculously popular duel map. Often imitated, never duplicated.
ztndm3 (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/ztndm3.zip): Made by the legendary ztn, this is another good duel map which sees a lot of play.
povdmm4 (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/povdmm4.zip): A true test of skill. Players start with full health, armor and ammo and try to get as many frags as possible on the other player. With nowhere to hide, and only two yellow armors on the map (plus dropped backpacks from dead players which hold a modest amount of health), the tiniest difference in aiming skill can make all the difference.
endif (http://shub-hub.com/files/maps_multiplayer/endif.zip): Need even more of a challenge? In this map, both players are dropped into a very tall cube and given infinite rockets. The only catch is that you can only kill the other player when he's in the air.
