View Full Version : How I got the 360 controller to work (including switching the analog sticks)

It looks like most of the threads here are about getting gamepads to work, so here's how I did mine without installing any special drivers or using programs that map the buttons to the keyboard like Xpadder, etc.

The 1.30 patch comes with a gamepad configure tool, but if you try to click on it with just your 360 controller plugged in, it tells you it is not supported. To get mine working, I added this to the file DMC3SE.ini in the Devil May Cry folder:

[Controller (Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows)]
START = 7
SELECT = 6
CIRCLE = 1
TRIANGLE = 3
SQUARE = 2
CROSS = 0
L1 = 4
R1 = 5
L2 = 11
R2 = 12
L3 = 8
R3 = 9
L<->R = 1

That gets the analog sticks switched, the start button to skip videos (which I don't think there is a way to map without doing this) and everything. The only thing not working in this setup are the L2 and R2 buttons, since those are analog on a 360 controller, but you can get by without them.

Edit: This is for the wireless controller, but it should work for the wired one too. You just need to go to the control panel and get the name of your controller and change it in the brackets at the top to that name.

I tried this but with the line [Controller (Xbox 360 Controller for Windows)] since I have the regular one and it does nothing. I would really like to avoid using 3rd party drivers, any ideas?

I know that this Posting is very very old but i got the normal Controller working. The Config above is perfect, but it doesn't work with the wired controller. Add this lines to your dmc3se.ini to get it working. Remember. The Gamepad Configuration Tool will still not recognize your gamepad but it will work fine ingame.

[Controller (Xbox 360 Controller for Windows)]

doesn't work because this is the description in your device manager. You have to use the description given under system control -> game controllers. Hopely i could help you after such a long time ;)

Last one word. It is important to use the original Microsoft Drivers. XBCD won't work unless you add the following config with the name of the xbcd driver from the menu.

Aaand ... sorry for my baaad english ;)

Or if you want to use the controller with a Play & Charge Kit.

[Controller (Xbox 360 Wireless Controller via Play & Charge Kit)]
START = 7
SELECT = 6
CIRCLE = 1
TRIANGLE = 3
SQUARE = 2
CROSS = 0
L1 = 4
R1 = 5
L2 = 11
R2 = 12
L3 = 8
R3 = 9
L<->R = 1

On my config, I had to put [Controller (XBOX 360 for Windows)]..

works great, but no weapon switch is a bummer

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Also I did save the .ini before trying to open the gamepad configuration tool.

The gamepad configuration tool will not work with the Xbox controller even with the INI file. That INI file is what it would spit out if it did work properly, so you don't need to run the tool - just start up the game with that file.

This does not work. Nor can you even save the file after chages even running as admin.

Okay I found a way to get the controller working, including the triggers, without using the .ini file or the configuration utility. This also gets the start button to work as a cutscene skip/pause menu button :D

First, you need the XBCD drivers. These can be a hassle to install in Windows Vista/7. Follow the directions on this page: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/9118-xbcd-drivers-xbox-360-gamepad.html#post166744 (see post #7 "Success")

Once you have XBCD working, download the custom configuration file here: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33882220&page=2

That's not quite everything though, that configuration file is off by a bit. Reassign the buttons to the following:
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1299/xbcddmc3se.png (http://img218.imageshack.us/i/xbcddmc3se.png/)

After that just load up your game and go to the gamepad configuration. Make sure the buttons are properly assigned (A is jump, X is shoot, B is style, Y is melee).

It's a big hassle yeah but it works. The only thing that doesn't still work is the Y-axis on the right stick, to move the camera up and down. It's not a huge loss, and I can't figure out how to make it work. I've tried every axis there, maybe you just can't do it at all in the game?

notzaar's solution probably works great, but using JoyToKey (http://www.oneswitch.org.uk/2/I/JoyToKey/JoyToKey.htm) is a bit less effort. You can just map the triggers to Q and E keyboard keys (the defaults for weapon switching), and the rest of the buttons already work fine with the .ini controller profiles posted here.
