View Full Version : "Fading to black" effect gone on media player

Steam used to do this cool thing where your entire desktop faded away to black and then the movie started.

Nowadays it flickers the screen, then it does the fade thing, then it goes back to the desktop and opens a window with the media in it, then it flickers back to full screen and the media starts.

It really ruins the illusion, which I always thought was quite cool and slick. Anyone have any idea why this is happening and if I did something to cause it? It's no biggie but I'd like it back the way it's meant to be if possible.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. Are you using Vista? I first noticed it when I switched to it.

Yeah, Vistax64.

It's a shame, I loved the 'fade to video' effect. It was so slick. Now it looks like 'teh weak'.

I have Vista too and this problem. I also have the problem where the HL2:EP2 trailer at the end of EP1 doesn't play. Maybe this is also because of Vista....

Yeh, the fade-to-black effect really doesn't play nice with the DWM in Vista. The Vista desktop is now basically a full-screen D3D app, very different to how it was before.

Hopefully they fix this anytime soon.

It is really annoying both screens are flickering around when I start a video out of Steam before the video starts.
