View Full Version : Turning off Event Notifications

Is it possible to turn off group event notifications? I like that I can check my control panel page for a list of events, but I don't like having to open and then confirm a handful of new event notification windows every time I start Steam.

Thanks!

I hope there's a way to turn this off, it seems every group I'm in spams about 5 messages every time I go afk, and if I leave the group, I end up getting as many invites :|

This is incredibly annoying. I could care less about events that are starting all day while I'm at work, so why do I need to close all the notification windows when I get home? And even worse, there's already a handy sliding notification window for the events, so the actual message box is unnecessary.

There NEEDS to be a set of notification options for Community like there is for the Friends list. I hope this comes with an update in the very near future. Until then, I've been forced to quit several groups I was a part of because I don't want 30 notifications to click through every time I sit down.

Bump! This has been an issue for over a year? Valve, this change is long overdue.

I just got invited to a group and joined. About every 20-30 minutes I get a pop-up notifying me of the same two events over and over. I think it is the group that is creating the spam. It would be nice to be able to block the popups. But since it is abuse by the group admin, I guess I will just leave the group.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but is there a solution for this yet? I'd rather not have to quit the groups I'm in to get the messages to stop :(

Please allow an option to turn this behaviour off. It's annoying enough in normal games, but in low res things like Zuma it takes up a huge chunk of the screen, obscuring vital parts of the game.

Please add this feature! What is the point of having a community feature if you can't join any groups because of all the spam?

broken85
10-18-2009, 10:13 AM
Indeed, it makes no sense to force users to use messagebox-style notifications for this.

Why would the rolling event notifications near the system tray not suffice? If you don't see it when it happens, you're likely to miss the event anyway!

OMG.
It wasn't till the "Bump! This has been an issue for over a year?" that I realized this was such an old thread.
Just scouting the forums now to check on this.
I Admin the kotaku group n the sale on TF2 brought in alot of new members, but seems some folks want to join just for the kotaku but not to play TF2 or L4D. So had some guys hounding me to tell em what setting turns off notifications.
Does seem a useful feature, and surely a box next to a group in the Groups tab would be all that would do it. "Do not show notifications from this group". Folks can look at the calendar on their home page and the status list to see what has happened, any they wish to join is no problem.
If there's an event they wanna participate in just a right click and "notify me when this event starts" would do.

Was looking for a way to turn of these ridiculous event notifications; I get about 30 each day. Seems there is none after reading this.
I have no choice to delete all groups who give me more then two notifications a day now.

I can't believe they haven't added this feature to Steam yet. I'm going to leave any group I get event notices from, purely because Steam doesn't support turning off those notices. To me, this is the #1 issue that needs to be addressed with Steam.

Hey Valve!

I too google searched this and it was the #1 link. Make this an option!!

I'm going to leave all my TF2 groups because I get 10+ invites every time I sign on. Being on Win7 makes it even worse because I have this blinking icon show up all the damn time and have to manually exit ALL notifications.

Valve, come on, fix this.

leveller
12-17-2009, 12:11 AM
Agreed, there is a time and place for popups and it isn't during my game unless I specifically say it is OK, and generally it isn't OK!

Can we not get an icon at the bottom of the Steam app next to "News" and "Friends" that says "Notifications"? This could be a wide range of messages like: PM's, system messages, group messages.

Icon could flash/pulse whena new item has arrived and show a number to indicate how many new items are waiting for attention?

2 things have occurred to me:

First, I've been playing Civ3 a lot recently and every time I get an event popup bottom right I get dragged out to my desktop and have to ALT-TAB back into my game.

Second, when I am in a game where a popup occurs (and I'm not dragged to desktop), but I am in the heat of a gun fight or whatever and cannot look at the notification, I then try and check the blotter and it isn't there. So a brief notification pops up, then disappears, and no blotter to check what it was ... anyone else getting this? It's like getting a phone call, but not picking up quick enough, then doing a check to see what number called, but the caller-withheld their number, therefore you don't know who it was and what they wanted! I hate that!

BUMP! Does anyone know if this thread has even been seen by anyone at valve? Is there anything else we can do to make sure they at least recognize the problem. It's pretty ridiculous. I'm about to leave a few groups myself because I can't stop the popups. I'm going to try to email valve a link to this threat. I suggest everyone reading this does the same.

valve has a strange habit of slacking on all the things that the fans want like hl2 ep 3 just so they can make a dozen half thought over ideas for some ancient game that no-one ever plays.
in short, valve got the worst marketing of all the game companies INCLUDING all the little unknown companies

like here the biggest problem of the entire community is all the spam but instead they will probaly make a pink pony themed skin for the spam windows

Steam if you ever want to your event/group feature to grow you have to limit the messages consolidate them or an option to turn them off..

Event/announcement pop-ups are seriously annoying when they steal focus. An option to destroy them or select which groups to receive these pop-ups would be nice. This "feature" is one of the most annoying aspects of Steam.

I'd started to explore groups and what they could give but since there's no way to turn these messges off and they constantly steal focus I just had to leave all groups instead. It's too bad since I was hoping to find people to play with that way, but I just can't put up with the maddeningly annoying focus stealing popups. I won't be joining any more groups until I see this very annoying design flaw changed :(

I don't have many problems with Valve. They try hard, but they have far too many customers to be able to try and keep them happy. It's unfortunate, but at least it means Steam won't be going away anytime soon.

It's just too bad when things like this fall through the crack for so long. We've been asking for over 3 years I think, and it's a feature that even Valve themselves should have seen the need for with their own accounts.

Even if this was never a customer suggestion, it simply seems obvious. There must be some factor to this which is keeping Valve from implementing it, even several UI iterations later...

Just wish they'd at least tell us why it's not being done, or how long we will need to wait.

broken85

Nope, there is no option, or none of us would be posting here. You can disable almost every more useful type of notification, but not group notifications.

This is why it's not understandable to me why it hasn't been implemented, or even mentioned as planned.

How about Valve opens up the Steam API to custom modifications and we code the feature ourselves? It would seemingly take a lot less time.

I'd volunteer myself for development of such a modification, if only it were possible.

@Sindahive: The unfortunately quick and painful answer is: You can't.

If you really don't want event notifications, aside from begging Valve to finally include such an obvious feature, your only recourse is to leave the groups that send too many notifications.

I've conceded to just clicking away a bunch of notifications every time I sit down at my computer... it sure is annoying, though.

I'm sad to see that Valve don't really care about fixing this problem.

Valve doesn't have enough employees to deal with all their issues, they have spread themselves incredibly thin to increase profit margins, decrease spending, and to ensure higher quality service.

Unfortunately, the latter positive for the customer isn't happening because there simply aren't enough employees to take care of all the stuff we need done.

Just to let you know, there are 40 support employees for about 30,000,000 active accounts.

Valve employees say this ratio is acceptable, but anyone who has a bunch of games and has needed a lot of support knows that simply isn't true.

Steam is awesome, but it has the worst customer service in the industry.

Valve, get your act together and fix this issue, I'm not gonna sugar coat this, the thread is from 2009 and we have NOTHING in the way of a fix for this, what exactly do you need to act?

At least let us know you are working on it, or at least tell us you aren't, do SOMETHING PLEASE!

broken85
08-10-2011, 03:27 PM
They have spread themselves very thin to ensure higher quality service? That is a contradictory statement, by whoever originated it :)

We aren't trying to reach the 30 support employees, we're trying to reach the developers' wishlist... and it should already be there.

If it's not there, then the gap between users (and user experience) and developers is simply far too large and strategy needs to be rethought.

And if it's already there, it should have already been actioned... it would be such a small feature, yet has fallen to the wayside for things like the new(est) Steam interface. I like new features as much as the next guy, but old ones need to be tweaked and fixed according to user complaints (or praise).

I can't imagine many other features have gotten this many complaints and been completely ignored by the developers for so many years.

Yet here I am, just to point out that I finally joined a group on Steam recently after being anti-social since 2004, and hate the event popups so much that I am going to now revert to my no-social-interaction-ever mode that I am sure you are fundamentally against from a business/marketing standpoint.

Dr.Stinglock
10-16-2011, 07:53 PM
I could see how this would be annoying for people that has joined one of the groups that spam invites and announcements about pointless drivel.

Then again, you could always not join them?

broken85
10-16-2011, 09:03 PM
But what if you want to join those groups but just not participate in the events which they spam? That should be an option... why should I have no choice but to see every notice for every group? It's asinine!

Many groups have other things to offer their members, so to be forced to leave the group because you don't want to be bombarded by messageboxes on your computer is ridiculous. It wouldn't be a big deal (could be an oversight) except that it has been requested starting years ago.

I can't imagine any reason why this feature would not get attention. I don't see how there could be any legal grey areas involved with making group messages optional, or any functional or aesthetic downsides to offering an option to disable them (on the contrary, only one huge upside).

I can't believe we still have to write about this so long after. The entire Steam UI has been redesigned from the ground up, yet nobody can be bothered to even comment on this long-standing, simple request for a check-box to disable a group's notifications (or easier yet, all group notifications).

You win Valve.
Been over 4 years without even an acknowledgement. Keep your silly popups then, you probably have some great advertisement scheme planned for it.

i was linked to this thread by a Valve employee. i had no idea they've been putting this issue off for 4 YEARS!

wtf valve, how hard is it to give us that option? you spent the time re working the whole steam client but you can't stop a simple little pop up from annoying everyone?

Seriously WTF please give me the option to disable this horrible feature or AT LEAST make them automatically close after a few seconds so I don't have 10 windows open every time I get home.

Gotta admit, it's a pretty awful feature when you have 402 groups. :o

Well, Offline Mode is your friend but you can't talk with your friends either. It's sad that we have to be in offline mode in order to get rid of this group notification spam...

Please implement this. Not only is it ♥♥♥♥ing annoying it minimizes any game that I am playing. Want to run WoW and Steam at the same time? Nope. Game minimizes every time you get a notification. Which is once every 15 seconds.

@Tyestor--it shouldn't do that if you run WoW through Steam and leave the In-Game Overlay enabled in the Steam options.

Normally when you launch the game outside of Steam, or disable the in-game overlay, then the game will minimize every time a Steam message comes. With the overlay enabled, it simply shows up on the overlay (by default, Shift+Tab).

I shouldn't have to do that. I don't run it through Steam because I don't want to open Steam every time I want to play WoW. I also don't want the chat messages/online messages etc... to obscure what I am doing in game.

It should just, by principle, not interfere with ANYTHING other than itself. It takes away focus from Firefox whenever a notification pops up, it minimizes every game that I play and it's extremely irritating. The only thing that Valve has to do is add a check-box into the settings tab to disable notifications. It's not hard.

You're absolutely right that by principle you shouldn't have to run it that way--Since I can't implement that for you however, I was sharing the workaround that allows you to continue enjoying your game without the hassle of it minimizing every time a group posts an event.

I'm just as irritated as everyone else that there is no option to turn it off (see all my other posts in this thread), but at least the behavior you mentioned does have a known workaround.

And you don't have to launch it through Steam every time... if you're running Steam, launch it through Steam to stop the problem from happening. If you're not running Steam, then launch it from a different shortcut and you won't have the problem anyway, because Steam's not running...

Wow ok I thought I was just dumb because I couldn't find the option or something but it's just that steam has been badly designed for five years now.

This is still really annoying, bump.

@jasonbecker83

Just because they slipped the option in at some point doesn't mean it's always been there. When this thread was started, and for a long time after that, there was no way to disable event notifications.

Additionally, Blotter Settings is not a very sane place for the option to be, seeing as there are many additional notification settings in the Steam client options. I would expect 'Blotter Settings' to only affect the Blotter, by nature of its name.

While I didn't appreciate your condescension (my reading skills are doing just fine!), I certainly do appreciate you pointing out where the option is! I'll give it a try. Thanks for the heads up :)

Oh, and by the way, if you would have read the other threads about this issue, you'd have seen that people have tried changing the Blotter Settings in the past and it had no effect--we had no idea that anything had changed since then.

But hey, if it works, it works. I haven't gotten an event notification so far, but it hasn't been very long yet :)

@broken85 I have no idea about how "old" it is. I needed it about 1 year ago and it was already there then. Probably wasn't here in the 2007 :p
And yes, that's not the proper location for that option. It should be placed in steam -> settings -> friends (or interface)

@jasonbecker83

It worked for you a year ago? Very interesting!

I saw the option a while back (it was posted in another thread as a suggestion), but it did not affect the popup notifications at that time for me or a couple other users that reported back.

It's good to hear that it's been working for you, however, and it gives me hope that maybe it'll take full effect for me this time as well :)

I've been playing a lot of games from GOG lately, and many of them aren't compatible with the Steam Overlay, so it was very annoying having it minimized every 10 minutes when some TF2 event was starting :)

I can confirm that the method posted by @jasonbecker83 works perfectly.

I haven't had a notification in over 2 days, which has not happened to me in a very, very long time.

Finally... peace and quiet!

I take that back. I got back today and have 3 Event Started windows up for groups. So apparently it only gets rid of the notifications when they Schedule the events...

For new community system. Go to "Friends" screen right beneath the "Community" button. Go to "Friend's activity settings" and untick the options that bug you. It's beneath the "Friend activity" title on right hand side.

I know the post is old, but this option is not for this...
like it says, its when someone SCHEDULE the event, like if schedule an event for next week right now, this option doesn't tell that I did that, but when the next week comes the event pop-up will appears...

That is correct, That setting does not affect the pop-ups for events, it only affects whether they go into the feed.
