Yeah using Fraps, dunno about the sound, it's just always worked for me. As for the filesize, I record at 800x600 then compress with divx and a 2:1 reduction filter in virtualdub. :)

Thanks, now that the compression is figured out I need to get the sound working, as the damn thing only wants to record through my headset mic and not the game sound

Make sure the sound input in fraps is set to "What U Hear." Should help.

I have tried to find that in every setting on my comp but since I am running using a USB headset I don't think Fraps likes it much since theres essentially no on-board sound, only way I can get game sound right now is if I stick the mic right up to the ear piece.

Oh, that's... inconvenient. You might be able to circumvent this with a virtual audio-cable util, but I wouldn't really know :(

For a lot of people, including myself, it's the easiest and most exciting elite character. For me, the other elite characters have too many colors to keep track of -_-
...thus, it's Ninja Mono that is popular.

After the initial trouble of getting iTunes music unprotected, I started having fun with Audiosurf. Then I realized there was global competition. I wanted to surf something extreme: Through the Fire and the Flames!!!! Seems like a lot of people surf that song. It is becoming a kind of trend with music based video games. But, that got boring after the 10th try or so.

So, I figured why should we compete in the sense of skill and intensity. Why not compete the realm of hilarium! Therefore, I decided I would obtain the most hilarious tunes we know today, surf them, and then post a video of me surfing them. I hope it's enjoyable.

I’m Tom (aka Spinner), a Stage6 user and an employee of DivX, Inc., the company behind the service. I’m writing this message today to inform you that we plan to shut down Stage6 on February 28, 2008. Upload functionality has already been turned off, and you’ll be able to view and download videos until Thursday.

I know this news will come as a shock and disappointment to many Stage6 users, and I’d like to take a few moments to explain the reasons behind our decision.

We created Stage6 with the mission of empowering content creators and viewers to discover a new kind of video experience. Stage6 began as an experiment, and we always knew there was a chance that it might not succeed.

In many ways, though, the service did succeed, beyond even our own initial expectations. Stage6 became very popular very quickly. We helped gain exposure for some talented filmmakers who brought great videos to the attention of an engaged community. We helped prove that it’s possible to distribute true high definition video on the Internet. And we helped broaden the Internet video experience by offering content that is compatible with DVD players, mobile devices and other products beyond the PC.

So why are we shutting the service down? Well, the short answer is that the continued operation of Stage6 is a very expensive enterprise that requires an enormous amount of attention and resources that we are not in a position to continue to provide. There are a lot of other details involved, but at the end of the day it’s really as simple as that.

Now, why didn’t we think of that before we decided to create Stage6 in the first place, you may ask? That’s a good question. When we first created Stage6, there was a clear need for a service that would offer a true high quality video experience online because other video destinations on the Internet simply weren’t providing that to users. A gap existed, and Stage6 arrived to fill it.

As Stage6 grew quickly and dramatically (accompanied by an explosion of other sites delivering high quality video), it became clear that operating the service as a part of the larger DivX business no longer made sense. We couldn’t continue to run Stage6 and focus on our broader strategy to make it possible for anyone to enjoy high quality video on any device. So, in July of last year we announced that we were kicking off an effort to explore strategic alternatives for Stage6, which is a fancy way of saying we decided we would either have to sell it, spin it out into a private company or shut it down.

I won’t (and can’t, really) go into too much detail on those first two options other than to say that we tried really hard to find a way to keep Stage6 alive, either as its own private entity or by selling it to another company. Ultimately neither of those two scenarios was possible, and we made the hard decision to turn the lights off and cease operation of the service.

So that’s where we are today. After February 28, Stage6 will cease to exist as an online destination. But the larger DivX universe will continue to thrive. Every day new DivX Certified devices arrive on the market making it easy to move video beyond the PC. Products powered by DivX Connected, our new initiative that lets users stream video, photos, music and Internet services from the PC to the TV, are hitting retail outlets. We remain committed to empowering content creators to deliver high quality video to a wide audience, and we’ll continue to offer services that will make it easy to find videos online in the DivX format.

It’s been a wild ride, and none of it would have been possible without the support of our users. Thank you for making Stage6 everything that it was.

I figured it out, it isn't just the song that determines the layout of the track, but also the mode in which you play, I tried the song in both casual and ninja mono with no corkscrew. Played it in Mono Pro and got myself the corkscrew, sweet corkscrew too. That happened with another song where the layouts were different between the different modes.

Once I get good enough I'll post a couple of videos, my two favorites so far and the ones I would reccomend giving a look at are "High Hopes" Pink Floyd and Beethoven's 7th (Nodame Cantabile edited version), not particularly challenging, but fun to play.

This always happens to me when I record at eg 25 fps and the actual ingame fps drop below that value often... try to reduce recording size to half or even reduce the ingame resolution to get constant fps preferable at 25 fps when recording at 25, 30 when recording at 30. Good luck :D

Nearly everything uploaded to Youtube looks awful compared to the file you give them.

If you're using Fraps, use the option to halve the resolution of the capture. Youtube is going to reduce the resolution anyway, so it would be better to start with something closer to what they're going to do to it anyway.

Then when you convert it with XviD, using one pass in its default settings looks just fine. At least in my experience it does.

I've stopped using FRAPS as a means of recording my AudioSurf videos and now strictly use a hardware solution. My video card is an old ATI Radeon AIW 9700 Pro. I can "clone" my desktop to a second monitor or TV. So...I also have a Hauppauge PVR-250 TV/capture card. Taking the video out from the ATI card and back into the capture card allows me to play AudoSurf and record it with virtually no performance hit that I can discern. The computer is an old single-core P4 at 2.6GHz with 1GB of RAM. The video is recorded to a separate drive so there's no issue with writing to the same drive the game and OS reside upon.

Now, the point of all of this is that I found a thread over at audio-surf.com which has a very good guide to using FRAPS and other software to record and convert video for use on YouTube. YouTube virtually destroys most video uploaded there in terms of quality as well as making your audio mono instead of stereo. But, there's a way around all of that.

Here is a link to a post in that thread which will show you how to get stereo sound, decent video quality and it doesn't involve any bitrate calculating or the usual gobs of software utilities to accomplish this feat.

Anyway, here are links to some AudioSurf vids I made using the so-called "10:59" trick. When you click on the links, hit the pause button there to allow the video to buffer until the red bar gets about halfway. Then press the play button. You may notice that the length of the videos is shown at about 11 minutes (or just under that). They're really only about 3 to 4 minutes long and will simply go "black" at the end when finished. The quality is still not as good as what you would get at places like the now-defunct Stage6.com or vimeo.com, but for YouTube it's much better than the average AudioSurf clips you can find there.

Honestly, I think it was a kind of crappy run (did respawn twice). But I kept getting lucky red paints, so I kept up my score to take the record.

What I don't understand, is why I didn't get clean finish. I used blue paint at the end to clear the board, and nothing is on the board. And it counted the blue blocks. But not Clean Finish.

The guy who I took the record from got a slightly higher score than mine, since I didn't have the CF points, and regained the title later.

I play all of mine in Mono Pro because Mono Elite modes are absolutely brutal. You'll see why when you see the songs in Mono Pro. I tried Psycho Strings in Elite and it just wasn't going to happen. I mean, I finished the song, but I only upload Stealth runs, and Psycho Strings is pretty slow compared to some of the other ones I've done.

If you're looking for a challenge on Ninja Mono (without subjecting yourself to the ear-bleeding 'music' that people chalk up as being the most difficult), check out Satellite (Original Mix) by Oceanlab, or Beautiful (Original Mix) by Ferry Corsten, or Madagascar (Push Remix) by Art of Trance. Those are all pretty decent for a challenge, off the top of my head.

Some songs that I've played are also exceedingly more difficult when I play copies of the songs from live sets, as opposed to mp3s from CDs. For instance, I ripped 'Torn' by Paul van Dyk from a live set he played, and it was one of the most difficult songs I've ever played through. But if you play through an mp3 of the song from the CD, it's pretty normal. The difference is that there is a lot more noise in a live set -- especially if it's from an event (which this was) -- as opposed to being live over a radio. You end up with noise from the crowds, etc.
