Hi all,

I'm a closet DJ who recently got the bright idea to mix a series of 20-minute mini DJ sets specifically to play in Audiosurf. I call this The Audiosurf Sessions.

Are there any other DJs out there? If so, please contribute your 20-minute mixes and I'll happily host them on my website for everyone here to download!

Please enjoy, tell me how you like the mixes, and try to beat my scores. More mixes to come!

Here is a set I made for myself, it's chiptunes only, varying from happy hardcore and drum and bass to rave/hardcore techno, I hope someone enjoy it :)

You can download it here ;) (http://www.mediafire.com/?n1t39js9xsy)

Thanks for sharing, ajcf89. I love the music! Too bad it's just crossfaded and not beatmatched.

It's kinda hard effectively beatmatching different genres, especially when we're dealing with such a lo-fi sound that chiptunes have, I tried :)

Yep, 20 minutes is a real marathon indeed. Not everybody will like this DJ mix idea but I'm really glad you've enjoyed it enough to try it a few times. What keeps me interested is the amazing way Audiosurf presents a new colour, speed, and intensity for every new song I mix in, and even a different mood while a mix is in progress. As a DJ I love seeing how Audiosurf interprets mixes!

Thanks for playing, UncFester!

I've been playing lots of individual songs to see what works so I have some good ideas for what to include in my next mix. I hope the next one will really take advantage of AS' sensitivity. Lots of dramatic builds and punchy, impactful instruments.

Starting to see some high scores, including yours (which are higher than mine.. grr). It's very flattering to see so many people invest so much time each round!

You make it all worthwhile, Uncfester. Give me a few days and I'll mix another one using the songs I've tested that make AS go nuts.

I only played the first one, so I don't know if the others have the same problem, but...

..with the clean finish bonus being an insane 25%, you might want to make songs that clearly indicate "hey, the song is about to end, keep in mind that you need to finish clean".

The first song just suddenly ended, resulting in me having a single colored block left...

...and thus, a really low score. :(

(also, not really related to your song, I find it annoying that Ironmode doesn't give any bonus or anything. Oh well.)

jesus likes pie
04-06-2008, 01:18 PM
the first one had like 4 blocks at the end w/o ironmode for me so that got cleared for clean finish.

Perhaps ironmode only has 1 stray block at the end though.

You do all realise that all of the tunes on these mixes are subject to RIAA copyrights and should not be shared this way?

Well...

iirc, ironmode also hade a bunch of blocks at the end, (me not finishing clean wasn't only related to the single colored block left, but it also had something to do with a certain gray block.. :o )

But unless the author mixed these songs on purpose so that the end would have a bunch of colored blocks, it was just luck.So the next time that he makes a mix that suddenly ends, you might not have a convinient stack of blocks in the last 3 seconds, and many more people might run into the "damn now I didn't finish clean" problem.

Your nic is wrong. I think it's really "buzzkilla."
Why on earth your only contribution to this thread had to be that statement is beyond me. I guess everyone has to feel righteous at one time or another.

...and your "nick" is probably wholly deserved. Sharing tunes, however it's done, even as a "fun post" on a forum, is illegal. I'm amazed the mods have sat back and let it happen but hey, knock yourselves out.

Regarding RIAA and all that, if Valve asks me to take these mixes down I will happily do so. That being said

1 - These are low quality mixed songs that cannot be cleanly isolated.
2 - Most of the music I play isn't from America.
3 - I add this to my ID3 tags - All rights reserved by original copyright holders. This mix may not be sold. brian@demodulated.com

I can't thank you guys enough. It's flattering to see so many comments and humbling to see scores so much better than mine. I've checked out my web server statistics and it seems that my favourite mix, #1, is by far the least popular. Understandably, most folks like the more soothing sounds of house.

And so, with you fine folks in mind and in my heart, I happily present to you Audiosurf Sessions volume 4.

DJ Brian Damage - Audiosurf Sessions Volume 4 (http://www.demodulated.com/music/mixsets/audiosurf/DJ%20Brian%20Damage%20-%20Audiosurf%20Sessions%20vol.%204.mp3) (vocal house)

These songs were much more erratic and challenging when I tested them individually than they are in the mix, so this set is pretty easygoing and won't be too much of a challenge for most. This will be a good one to play on the weekend with the spring breeze and sunshine pouring through your windows.

Enjoy, and don't expect me to be so accommodating on my next mix. I've been listening to a lot of hard techno and Dutch hardcore which is almost constantly downhill red!

Is the beginning of the first volume, that opening line about the art gallery, from vampire the masquerade: bloodlines?

I liked the middle part of the first volume the best, the end was good too, but the beginning was too slow at parts which were kind of boring, overall the first volume was pretty good

good job

I play a weekly internet radio show at www.radiogrounds.com (http://www.radiogrounds.com/) (Tuesdays at 7pm EST) and decided to kill 2 birds with one stone this week - instead of my usual continuous 60-minute mix I did 3 20-minute mixes especially for Audiosurf. Thus, I have 3 more mixes to share today! Play with a good set of headphones for best results as all 3 of these mixes have delightful bass tones.

Volume 5 is a mix of UK gabber hardcore surrounded by an American tune in the intro and a Canadian tune at the end.. If you don't know what gabber is then you probably can't pronounce it either - it's the Dutch word for "friend", pronounced "chabber" like the Hebrew word "Chanukah". About 185bpm of percussive mayhem, though I eventually tire of this slow speed and crank it to 200bpm and beyond! Unfortunately these songs are almost exclusively downhill when played individually but are of varied difficulty in the mix. Watch out for that last song though - it'll likely spoil your stealth! The production quality of intelligent gabber is unbelievable so play this mix LOUD to ensure you hear the intricacies of the programming.
DJ Brian Damage - Audiosurf Sessions Volume 5 (http://www.demodulated.com/music/mixsets/audiosurf/DJ%20Brian%20Damage%20-%20Audiosurf%20Sessions%20vol.%205.mp3) (UK gabber)

Volume 6 consists of melodic, "plinky" techno. Lots of Jeff Mills; a producer I admire very much. I noticed in my last techno mix that the difficulty increased as I overlapped one song with another so I tried to do especially long mixes, but in the end it's not a terribly difficult track. If my cat hadn't been a pest during my trial run I'd have gotten clean stealth so I recommend locking up your feline before giving this one a go.
DJ Brian Damage - Audiosurf Sessions Volume 6 (http://www.demodulated.com/music/mixsets/audiosurf/DJ%20Brian%20Damage%20-%20Audiosurf%20Sessions%20vol.%206.mp3) (melodic techno)

Volume 7 is a more relaxing mix of old school funky breaks - a very popular style of electronica in Florida that often permeates their local hip hop scene. Lots of punchy snares deep rolling bass so expect lots of bouncing coupled with some unexpected speed-ups.
DJ Brian Damage - Audiosurf Sessions Volume 7 (http://www.demodulated.com/music/mixsets/audiosurf/DJ%20Brian%20Damage%20-%20Audiosurf%20Sessions%20vol.%207.mp3) (chilly Miami breakbeats)

Please enjoy! I love your feedback so don't be shy to give praise or constructive criticism.

Any request for the next mix or mixes? I've had fun with many drum and bass and ragga jungle tracks so that's definitely in the cards, plus I'd like to return to the harder banging sounds so I'll soon be delving into my Rotterdam hardcore techno collection.

p.s., @seanoxide3, that's a crazy score you got on Volume 4! I got an intimidating dethroned email about you yesterday and I want revenge!! If you like the house sounds perhaps I'll do another vocal mix some time soon. Thanks for playing!

Hey, I've got a techstep/dnb mix I made a few weeks ago. Would you be interested in having me upload it somewhere and send you the link?
For some reason, my mixing software isn't letting me export it as mp3, so I'd have to send it to you as a wma file (which is fine for audiosurf).

Volume 8 of Audiosurf Sessions has officially been released!
Thanks a lot to Brian for his generous hosting of my mix, and thanks to all you Audiosurf players who will (hopefully) enjoy my version of the 20 minute mix.

Volume 8 moves on to the harder sounds of European drum and bass. Intro-ing with a heavy techstep sound from Black Sun Empire, this mix moves relentlessly on to more traditional drum and bass tracks from Bad Company and Andy C before ending with a mellower track from Marcus Intalex.

All you drum and bass fans should enjoy the track selection, and all you new to the scene will undoubtedly need to run out and buy some cds! ;)
Enjoy!

@seanoxide3 - dethroned sucka

I'm really liking this mix. You're a more decisive DJ than I am - you really know your tracks and you pick perfect moments to cut out of one song and into the next. That's something I need to work on. I like doing really long mixes but sometimes I wish I'd waited 4 more bars.

Bo!

seanoxide3
04-25-2008, 08:25 AM
Ha, nice job man. I'll have to try it again later and see what I can get ;)

Thanks for your kind words. It's important for me to be able to see a visual representation of the whole song as it's playing, and it allows me to find the ends of the exciting parts of the song and beatmatch into a new song just as the music is ramping down.
If you want to work more on when to cut out, I would recommend checking out mixmeister, since it is geared more to production than live mixing. Try using that for a few days (just the demo even) and then go back to whatever live software you use (you do, right?) and you should notice an improvement.

LOVE the vol. 7 breaks mix. Tracklist maybe?

I use Traktor DJ Studio 2 which shows me a graphical representation of the whole song as well as the few seconds before and after the point currently playing. My only excuse for not mixing at the best times is that I don't practise enough. I really only play once a week or so - it's all my poor wife can stand.

I'll email you a track list if I can figure out which songs they are. I've been purposely omitting them from the Steam forums so as not to ruffle any feathers.

For mixing I use Traktor DJ Studio 2.5.3 for Windows XP, and an M-Audio X-Session UC17 USB MIDI mixer. For mastering I use Audacity and MP3gain which are both fantastic freeware apps. Finally, I do the ID3v2 tags with Windows Explorer (right-click, properties).

Hey seanoxide3, what equipment do you use?

seanoxide3
04-25-2008, 04:49 PM
I've got a Behringer BCD3000 mixer, Traktor 3, Deckadance, and Mixmeister Fusion.
I actually used Mixmeister for Vol. 8 since it's better for production-type mixing, but most of my other stuff (ie, messing around) is with deckadance.

UncFester, your monkey song is awesome! Did you play the guitar on that one? I love the vocal accompaniment! :) The first thing I thought of doing was pitching it way up so that it's the same speed as drum and bass :D

Your song really syncs up nicely with AS!

Check out this website that I just found. It's got an interactive list of all kinds of genres of electronic music. You can also listen to short samples from a bunch of artists for each genre. http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/
From there, I would find some artists you're interested in and maybe purchase some mp3's off iTunes or the Amazon mp3 thing because you'll need songs to mix. What we're doing isn't really actual production of music, but rather mixing songs together to form a sort of musical journey. I'm not familiar with Screenblast Acid, but you could try loading some tracks up in there and transition between them to see if there's a way of beat-matching (manual or otherwise).
If not, try downloading demos of Deckadance, Mixmeister, and Traktor (if there's a demo).

Brian: typo in your first post. you listed this newest mix as "Volume 8" where it should be 9. :P

Thanks a lot Uncfester. If I knew how to make more corkscrews, I definitely would.
I've actually got prospective volumes 10 and 11 (or 12 and 13 if Brian uploads some mixes) pretty much worked out right now, so expect those fairly soon -- probably. 10's gonna focus on heavier stuff, while 11 is more laid back and melodic, kind of similar to 9, but more downtempo-type stuff.

I wish I could take credit for them, but no, that's just how the song's made.
I know Brian isn't big on posting song names for these mixes, but I figure just one is alright, since you're not likely to recognize most (any?) of these tracks. That song is "Solitary Native" by Alix Perez & Sabre. I would highly recommend trying to find it on iTunes or wherever I bought it from, since it works so well in most mixes.

I bet I could recognize most of them. :P

You should really post the track lists of the mixes.

For example, the first track on Vol. 7 is:

DJ Icey - This Is How My Drummer Drums

I've tried the Audiosurf demo and this is one of the tracks I played: (Trance)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYszjrgYClI

Space Manoeuvres - Zone Two (Micah's 'Course Adjustments' Remix)

(not me in the video though)

Yes, I love electronica. I've been listening to it for about fifteen years. :)

Just played Volume 9 on the Elite level -- the corkscrew is at the front-end of the track instead of the back-end like Pro. Weird!

I'd like to see a track with several corkscrews, but so far I can't seem to recall any with more than 2 (some metal song, don't ask which one).I didn't get any corkscrew on Pro :(
I have yet to see a song with multiple corkscrews. I seem to get them in a lot of my Metallica songs, though. And I found one at the beginning of Private Investigations by Dire Straits. A very sloooowwww one.

Oopsie, post #1 corrected.

Let's please keep on the down low regarding track listings. I wish I could share them too but I'd rather not rock the boat by making this remotely infringing activity easily searchable. Not while I'm hosting the files, if you please, for the greater good of making our mixes available. Steam has been a good platform and a good company and I don't want to put them at any risk.

I feel like a ninja right now, UncFester. I added you as a friend on audiosurf and have now discovered that you are indeed "obsessed" with mixing. Looks like you've got lots of songs out, now let's hear 'em!

PS: Volume 10 has a corkscrew!!

EDIT: let me clarify, since I was a little ambiguous: i can see your recently played song list, so that's how i know.

seanoxide3
04-30-2008, 10:45 PM
Well, it's in the "Add a friend" feature of audiosurf, which is unrelated to steam community, i think.

Alright, on to the mix.
I loved the pacing of the mix; how it started slowly and worked up to some pretty intense downhill bits for a while. The transitions between songs were excellent (except for one that felt a little more thrown together) and the track selection was pretty good. Keep in mind, I'm kind of biased about track selection since I'm less into the electro stuff, but still, it was an excellent mix.
One other thing; I felt like the very last song was a little out of place maybe. When I get to the end of a mix, I generally go for a song with less thumpy bass and more laid-back, but it still worked fine. :D

I vote it to be a Session, but maybe give me a chance to get 10 and 11 up, since I've already tagged both of them and ran through a few times.

Overall, great work for a self-proclaimed beginner!

I'm just skipping around through your mix to hear the transitions, Uncfester, and I really like your track listing and transitions! The songs are very Jean Michel Jarre - spacey and soothing. The transitions are beatmatched exceptionally well but with a little more experience you'll understand the importance of maintaining the 4/4 patterns with transitions - that's one of the most difficult DJ skills to master.

If you're comfortable with it I'd be honoured to upload your mix to my web server and call it an "official" Audiosurf Sessions. What's your DJ name? :)

Big respect, Uncfester. You've accomplished something very impressive in a short time. I'll have time to give this a proper go in Audiosurf when I get home from work today.

And seanoxide3, set me up with links to your mixes and I'll get 'em up there as well!

I did seanoxide3's mix #11 today and it was super awesome. That Prodigy remix is bananas. You know you're listening to something good when it holds your attention, so I was so proud of myself for getting stealth clean on ninja, but later realized I'd accidentally played on easy. Nearly 1.2 million points!! Nice one seanoxide3!

I tried to play your mix #10 today too but I screwed up bad early on and quit out of frustration. I'll get to it tomorrow or on the weekend.

Uncfester, I'll definitely get to your mix ASAP. I've recommended it to my wife so I might kick back and watch her play it. She's into more soothing sounds and your mix really foots the bill.

Here's links to seanoxide3's 2 awesome new mixes. I'll post Uncfester's mix as soon as he declares a DJ name! (even if it's unchanged)

Hm, just did IM Mono Pro on Vol. 9, no corkscrew. Lamers.
I like that one a lot, though. Especially the last third or so (from "keep it on the low"). The drums(?) in the "are you ready" section had me thinking I was hitting grays all the time, though.

bobsmurf
05-06-2008, 01:14 AM
The funny thing is, on my run that dethroned you, I missed a block or two in the middle, and several at the end (due to clean finish paranoia)...when I ran it again later, I hit every single block except the last two and got a lower score. So I guess there's some strategic misses to be made (on my version anyway), but it didn't look that way when I was running it.

I'm using a 320kbps mp3, and yeah, I have no doubt that our tracks are created differently. I'll try playing it straight from the cd and see what happens.

I agree that it's a really fun song to play. :D I like tracks that bounce like that, especially faster ones.

spyrochaete
05-06-2008, 05:04 AM
In my limited experience I've found that higher bitrates produce more blocks. I thought it had something to do with the clarity of the sounds and the trueness of the high-end. I was actually considering releasing my next mixes at a higher bitrate as a result.

Also, I didn't think of it until just now, but perhaps I've been cheating with my ripped CDs as well. I use a software utility called MP3Gain which modifies the gain of every MP3 in my collection to make them all approximately the same volume. This effectively makes every song louder which, I suppose, probably creates more blocks while still detecting as the same old song in Audiosuft.

Well, if a specific volume and bitrate were specified then I suppose this would be cheating, but they ain't so it aint! Right? (eyes dart around)

Here's a link to MP3Gain anyway. I love this piece of software so much.

ok so update:
I played Remember straight from the CD (for some reason, my Audiosurf doesn't like to play straight CD tracks. When I select the CD in the song browser, it hangs for a while, then the tracklist will come up, then it hangs some more, then it responds for half a second, then it hangs again...etc..) and the difference was clear. The basic track shape was the same (minus the corkscrew :(), and some of the blocks were in the same place, but there were a lot that were different. Apparently they were different enough to get me a higher score :D

spyrochaete
05-07-2008, 02:48 PM
I play at 1280x1024 but I'd be surprised if that had anything to do with the song analysis.

bobsmurf
05-08-2008, 04:35 AM
I tested Remember, and it only corkscrews in IM Pro, non-IM Elite, and non-IM Freeride. All tests done with Mono, fullscreen 1280x1024, 320kbps mp3, Premium, 4x AA, outline. Hrm.
If this keeps up, some dork using Vegas will come in and "luck" us both off of the board. :DNo doubt. Vegas is funny, though...pre-patch IM Vegas is even funnier, because it was the basic-est character: no gimmicks, no powers, no shoulders, no nuthin'.

Speaking of puzzle chars, though, I did the math and to beat your current score, one would have to get a raw of 44914 with M11 or 41838 with M21. And Clean Finish, obviously. Compare to a raw of 36797 with M11 on Mono to top you.

bobsmurf
05-09-2008, 01:22 AM
Lower bitrate gets you more blocks? I was under the impression that it worked the opposite way.
Also, lol at 128kbps being the lowest quality setting...because I remember ripping stuff at "medium" quality...of 112!

Oh, and DJs: can we expect an hourlong mix in the near future?

seanoxide3
05-09-2008, 10:52 AM
@Bobsmurf,

I can probably get an hour mix done, but, for me at least, it starts to get difficult to have a consistent theme throughout the whole mix once you get above around 35-40 minutes. Again, just me. I might work on it though, since you asked.

bobsmurf
05-10-2008, 12:08 AM
Are you using WMP 11?
Moving the slider to the left only goes down to 128kbps.You misunderstood. I use iTunes, and it does only go down to 128 (unless you use Custom). I was talking about the stuff I ripped back in the day. :p

ok so update: I just played a 128kpbs rip, nearly perfect, and got a higher score...but not quite high enough. The blocks I missed wouldn't have put me on top, either. AND I only got a match10. :(
The odd thing is, it had a traffic of 154, whereas the 320 had a traffic of 155. I guess the blocks were more clustered, or something.

spyrochaete
05-10-2008, 03:10 PM
Hourlong mix? Maybe! I doubt I'll do more than one, though. 20 minutes feels like the ideal maximum time to play in one sitting for me, though it's nice not to be constrained by such a strict time limit.

I'm really glad the limit was extended so much. I'd been avoiding some genres of music because average songs were too long to make a meaningful 20-minute mix, so maybe I'll do a leisurely trance mix for my long one.

I just played through an excerpt from my internet radio show this week and decided to upload it. Serviceable mixing, methinks, but I especially like my track selection of bright drum and bass. Most of these tunes have kinda off-putting chord progressions and weird intervals in the harmonies. Kind of jazzy and nostalgic.

This one's 43 minutes long, and the mix worked out really well in Audiosurf with a great track shape! Can you beat my score of over 940,000 points??? :D

Haven't seen Blade Runner (now I have to), but I absolutely love this mix, UncFester. Great mixing, awesome atmospherics at the beginning, and great use of vocals to set the mood. Since I don't mix trance as much as Brian does, I'm afraid I can't be much help in terms of constructive criticism, but I have a few things.
First of all, for me at least, it was mastered really quietly so maybe boost the overall volume of the mix. Volume varied quite a bit through the mix, actually.
Some of the double-time beats (where you doubled up the bassline) were really loud, so check into that maybe.
Overall though, I loved this mix. No offense to your first mix at all, but this one was so much more appealing to me. Probably just because it's more of my genre, but it was much more professional as well.
Last track kicked some serious butt, too. PM me the song name, if you would.
Haha, I keep listening to this and my opinion of it keeps getting better. Man, you killed this mix!!
Great job UncFester!!

PS: I'm working on a varied DnB mix again, lots of Calyx, a little Pendulum (guns at dawn), and probably some Subfocus. Not sure if you're into that stuff really, though.

PPS: Make another mix, but like this one is after the 10 minute mark. Not because I didn't like this one, just because the 2nd half of this one was totally my stuff.

Nice one, Uncfester! I really enjoyed your mix! Many of your transitions were perfectly smooth and imperceptible. I really like the theme of the whole mix, though I found the aggressive tone of some of the movie snippets in contrast with the soothing songs. I also didn't really care for some of the melody-on-melody clashes that resulted due to one of those movie samples. All in all your track selection was impeccable and very relaxing. Some gorgeous synths throughout.

Now I don't know how many of you watched the Euro 2008 Final between Spain and Germany today, but I sure did, so I dedicate this mix (especially the first two songs) to SPAIN. Starts off *way* different than it ends, so please stick with it. As is customary for my mixes, I really enjoyed the ending song. Lots of Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, and a little disco/breaks for those of you who are DJ Icey fans. I worked on the longer transitions between songs, and I liked a lot of the melody-on-melody action.

Bloody skull,
Nice, happy, mix. What software did you use for this mix? I really liked the stuttering/breaks in the rhythm and how you chopped up the vocals. Transitions are good, I'm not very familiar with this kind of genre, so I don't know how DJs usually spin this stuff, but the transitions were solid, except for the one at ~24 minutes. Way too much melody clashing there, try mixing at a point where it's just drums/bass or cut the treble/midrange (or use a high-pass filter) on one of the tracks. Just my $0.02. Otherwise, great mix.

Any chance you could PM me a tracklist (since it's a little risky legally if we start putting up tracklists for every set--we risk getting this stuff taken down)?

EDIT: Yeah, no worries here about his naming it vol. 15, it's a pretty good mix (as are yours, Uncfester) barring that last transition. I say, if you can fix that, bloody skull, and re-upload it, this mix would be great.

thanks, UncFester.
about the words...
only the first and the fifth song are in italian, the second sounds like spanish or portoguese ("el tren de la vida" means "the train of life").
in the first song, the man sings "Stasera la luna/ ci porterā fortuna, la luna" which is (literally) "Tonight the moon/ will bring us luck, the moon".
the fifth song is about a girl (giulia) who left the guy in the song that can't even sleep or eat anything. notice that giulia was also the name of my ex-girlfriend :D and she left me just like the girl of the song ^^.
it's late tonight, I'll update the session tomorrow in the morning.

Ok, I've updated Audiosurf Sessions vol. 15.
I've mixed everything with fresh mind :)
I've added some cool fx too, and I tried to make better the last song:
I used both the italian and the english version, because the italian is extended and the english has a better sound (may be the compression process). there's a little mess there, but nothing too annoying.

Nice mix Uncfester, I really enjoyed it.

Ok, a little story.
I had been working on a 20 minute DnB mix for maybe 3 or 4 days, using a bunch of new tunes I got last weekend, when I felt the power deep within myself to go for the gold; to complete a full hour mix (well actually, the audiosurf limit is 60 minutes i think, so it's a little shorter).
Here's what turned out; I really enjoyed it.
[Heavy DnB tunes, relentless basslines, wicked synths]

PS: There's a super secret surprise that you'll discover as soon as you play it in Audiosurf. As such, I advise that you play this in mono-pro to avoid ripping your hair out in frustration. :)

Well I don't know what the heck number we're up to now, so I'ma just tack on a wubbleyou.

I think it's about time you put up "X" and "Y" -- I know you have 'em (or should) so let us play 'em! :D

I do :) I was thinking of uploading them but they're hardcore techno and most people didn't much enjoy my hardcore/gabber mix.

Ah heck, I'll stick 'em up this weekend. They're about 40 mins each. I think I prefer the 20-minute ones.

--edit--

Meh, I seem to have erased X and Y. Gimmie a week and I'll whip up a little something new.

I'm throwing a tantrum right now, but I guess I can wait.

Did you give my new "monkey music" a try?

Been sick and phlegmy so I haven't been up to mixing anything new, but I halved one of my recent internet radio DJ shows and named it volume X, as I had done a couple of weeks ago but never shared. This mix is happy hardcore, oldskool breakbeat hardcore techno, and a smidge of J-pop for colour. Kind of happy, silly music with hard and complex percussion.

This genre lends a poignant counterpoint to Atrophee's drum and bass mixes since you can really identify the common influences in this ageing style; you can really see how both these apples fell from the same tree.

The stabby kick drums and punctuated rolling snare drums of happy hardcore work fantastically well in Audiosurf. I do a lot of trickery in my mixing style as well, with many rapid crossfader cuts as well as some realtime looping effects and a dramatic tempo bend in the middle. The result is an apt gameplay representation of this DJ mix with a lot of varying speeds, a great overall track curve with lots of on-beat blocks to pick up. It's pretty uncanny how tightly Audiosurf interprets this mix.

DJ Brian Damage - Audiosurf Sessions Volume X (http://www.demodulated.com/music/mixsets/audiosurf/DJ%20Brian%20Damage%20-%20Audiosurf%20Sessions%20vol.%20X.mp3) (happy hardcore)

p.s., this mix is a tad over 30 minutes long @ 320kbps

Should we call this the NyQuil Sessions? :)
I hope you get to feeling better so you can keep putting together more of your excellent mixes.

320kbps? I get too many complaints for offering high-quality encodes and decided to stick with 192kbps. Must be a dial-up problem or something.

Personally, I prefer 320kbps over anything else. I have nearly a terabyte of storage space on my local machine and oodles of external drives. With drives being so cheap these days, space shouldn't be a problem. Even on DSL, downloading your file only takes about 4 to 5 minutes. Well-worth the time in my opinion.

I'm really looking forward to surfing this one in a few minutes. I'm going to do it "cold" without listening to it beforehand.

Brian --

I've downloaded this mix three times now and there is something wrong.
The first time I played it I Stealthed it and got a clean finish but my score was around 536,000 points -- less than half of your score. I was "wtf?" and then looked at the time. It was just over 16 minutes instead of 30 minutes.

I went into Explorer and checked the file size which was about 39Mb but the time was shown as 16 minutes. So I downloaded it again -- same results -- and then downloaded it one more time.

Here's an image of its properties from in Explorer:
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/2227/briansxmixgs9.jpg

Any idea what is going on here?

Anyway -- I really like this mix even though I've only managed to hear just half of it! :D

Gah!

Thanks for the heads up, Unc. Looks like the upload got aborted halfway through. Sorry 'bout that! I'm uploading a new copy which should come out to 70MB. It'll be up in about 15 minutes.

I'm totally with you about keeping the highest bitrate possible. I have a whole bunch of DJ mix sets downloaded from almost a decade ago and they're all in like 16kbps realaudio format. It was convenient at the time but in the long run it's all pretty much unlistenable! It's the age of broadband and super cheap hard drives so I'm taking advantage of that this time around.

CaptainDingo
02-10-2009, 10:55 AM
My tests also show that the higher the bit rate the more accurate Audiosurf detects the beat and flow of the song. As the bit rate goes lower and lower you get less and less of a "responsive" ride.

UncFester

Hi, I have randomly picked a session (# 10) and I have to say you did a really great job!

Most of the music I listen to is played on guitars but it was still enjoyable. The downhill ride was incredible! Sadly that was the only fast part. It would have been nice to have another thrilling ride near the end of the mix.
Also some parts (dum dum di dum) had absolutely silent seconds which stopped the ride completely. That was kinda annoying and very challenging for the mind (not in a good way).

I thank you a lot for sharing these and I will definitely check out some more sessions.
I hope these mixes will help you come out of the closet! ;)

I'm so astounded at all the participation and enthusiasm around these Audiosurf Sessions mixes, from the DJs as well as from all the listeners. It's crazy to see how many names have racked up high scores on these sometimes unreasonably long marathon tracks. What's most impressive is to see some of the same names appearing on every high score table.

There's one name that appears more frequently than anyone else's, and that'd be the name of UncFester. That means a lot to me. That's why my latest, longest mix ever, was created with him in mind.

UncFester, having heard your mixes and original compositions I think I have an idea of what's right up your alley. Let me know, won't you?

This is a mix of mid-90s acid trance with a touch of psychedaelia, increasing in energy over the course of the astonishingly exhausting 56 minutes. This is perhaps my smoothest, most seamless mix ever, which is good from a DJ's standpoint but unfortunately results in a rather featureless uphill Audiosurf track. I added the [as-lessgrey] tag to quell the monotony which adds just enough activity to keep things enjoyable without being too hectic.

DJ Brian Damage - Audiosurf Sessions Volume Z (http://www.demodulated.com/music/mixsets/audiosurf/DJ%20Brian%20Damage%20-%20Audiosurf%20Sessions%20vol.%20Z.mp3)

320kbps CBR MP3, 132MB

p.s., yes I skipped volume Y. I was about to push the submit button on that but got cold feet - I had an embarrassing screw-up in there. However, I'd already gotten a huge high score on that track which wouldn't go away, so I incremented the file name this time around so that the leaderboard wouldn't be polluted with an unattainable high score.

Hi, spyrochaete!
I've discovered your thread earlier but now I'm also working on my own marathon mash-ups of my favorite songs. Originally I make them for my own entertainment but I suppose I could share them for other interested people who are interested in metal and progressive music. ;)
I've made six so far (each one ranging between 10-20 songs being used) but they're between 50-59 minutes long and the most usual melodic genres range from hard rock, progressive rock/metal, heavy metal and occasionally extreme metal, but also ambient and beautiful, atmospheric songs.

spyrochaete
01-03-2010, 09:33 AM
Hi Kustin,

Rock songs are a lot more mainstream than the techno songs we other DJs have been posting. I'm not comfortable hosting mainstream music on my web server. Sorry. However, if you can find somewhere to host your music I will edit the first post to include your work.

Kustin
01-04-2010, 06:20 AM
Thanks for the reply, spyrochaete! It's true that the rock genre is on a significantly higher popularity status than techno itself and I wouldn't bother sharing stuff that people are already familiar with.
It all comes down, though, to the reason I'm curious about sharing the mixes with other people. "Mainstream"... not quite my favorite word. Since I'm more focused on songs and artists that are more on the obscure level rather than on the popular level, I rarely listen to whatever comes up on radio or whatever a casual listener would talk about. I'm constantly digging through the underground scene and find bands that would deserve a little more spotlight for more people to discover, especially progressive metal. That's because I'm aware that there are also fans that are looking for hidden gems or potential favourites.

Granted, it's not for all listeners but rather for those who are likely to appreciate the specific songs of the genres I'm putting out and want something new. ;)
To sum it up, I leave out as much as possible songs from popular bands and artists such as Iron Maiden, Nickelback, Dragonforce ie. in the marathon mixes.

Anything's your decision anyway, spyrochaete. I'd feel bad for distorting the subject of your thread, since I only intend to expand the musical width of it. If you would decline, I might consider getting my own domain for the hosting (and start my own thread about it).

Hi again! Just to let you know, I've changed my mind for the time being. I'm not going to upload my mixes (or medleys) for the time being because I feel that I was gonna need to spend more time editing them before I know, from the critical point of view, that it'll appeal to other surfers.

By the way, I've tried out both Volume 6 and 12 on Audiosurf earlier. 6 was all right and 12 is better but then again, I haven't fully developed my taste in techno (though I'm trying to be open-minded). I'm going to try out Volume X soon...

Hi again Kustin,

Do let me know when you're ready to publish and if you find a bandwidth host (for instance a free one like Megaupload) and I'll add you to the front page.

For the uninitiated I recommend checking out Festunculus' mix as it's very easygoing and melodic. Same can be said of my Volume Z mix.

Looking forward to trying out yours!

I am currently mixing three 20min mixes to add to the giant collection. Dubstep, Electro House, Club - Dance - Hiphop. Ill see what they do in Audiosurf, :)
Also I would suggest that the OP edit the original post on the first page and list ALL the mixes.

Right, downloaded a few of these and played through part 1 & 9. (I always play mono)

1 was mostly boring track wise (the music itself was ok) and I got global 1st without even earning ninja.
9 was nice, once again not ninja and about halfway through my hand got sore.

which of these is really really fast?

I think I'll try part Z later.

spyrochaete

I don't think any of them turned out to be very fast, unfortunately. Z has the most interesting track in my opinion. And most people consider 1 to have boring music but it's the one with the most high scores and it happens to be my favourite of the bunch. :)

Thanks very much for playing through these! I hope you're enjoying!

Wow! This thread is still going after 2 years?

Well, I'm back from the "dead" (wondering where all my posts went).

Brian -- I did manage to download your Session Z a week or so after you posted it. Long story short: Life kicked me in the azz and then decided to keep stomping on me while I was down. Not completely back up yet, but I'm doing the best I can with what I've got. I apologize to you for not sending a message about my sudden and prolonged absence, but believe me -- it was not possible until just recently.

But not to dwell on the down side -- I loved the Session Z and have listened to it a lot and look forward to getting back into the "mix" of things here.

I have some new music and would like to know if anyone can point me to a free host so that I can share it with everyone.

It's good to be back!
