Hi, Everybody!

I am at the moment making a custom decal (I have never done this before) on photoshop. Like most decals, I want a part of it to be transparent, so I deleted my background layer leaving only the image I want to appear in-game. After I saved it as a tga, however, and re-opened it, the entire decal had been flattened and the spaces I made transparent are now white.

What do I do?

Unfortunately, it doesn't work.
The entire success of that tutorial is based around the plugin that allows you to save images on photoshop as vtfs. The plugin doesn't work. I installed it, but it doesn't show up in photoshop.

All I need to figure out is how to make a targa with transparent pieces in the image.

Hmm, well id suggest using vtf edit for making the TGA into a VTF, VTF edit converts TGA to VTF or VTF to TGA, i dont use photoshop so i cant help with that, but you should download VTF edit:

I have it already, but I'm very new to custom texturing, so it is a bit too complex for me.

hmm, vtf edit is easy to use, its just a matter of clicking inport, select your decal, then export, thats it.

what exactly are you struggling with, please provide a detailed description, and ill help the best i can :D

It appears that Photoshop can't handle transparent TGAs. Which is odd, but that's what I get from the OP.

You can get around this with the Photoshop VTF plugin (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Photoshop_VTF_Plugin).

yeah i already showed him that, he says that werent working. Theres not much help i can provide tho, coz i dont use photoshop, i use free photo programs that work easy and good, incase you want to try this if the vtf plugin dont work i suggest using the tools i use, called Photoplus 6 just google it, its free to use, and use vtf edit on its own, thats what i use, photoplus6 with vtf edit.

Says it's for photoshop cs3, not sure which version you have but I can't imagine it would be that different.

This is weird...
I posted something earlier, but I guess it didn't work.

Anyhow, the plugin works now, I didn't extract it to the right place the first time. I tried making the texture and it turned out tiny and purple checkered. I will probably be able to figure out what I did wrong, though.

In answer to craziestdan's question, I can use VTFedit in its simplest uses but am completely clueless when it comes to normal maps, mipmaps, etc.

hmm, wel i know as much as you, i dont know anything yet of how to use normal maps, bipmaps etc. You need to post a step guide of what you did, ie like you opened up vtf, extracted it to thisfolder, named it this etc
then i can understand more easier, to help you.
