8.7 on those specs, with a higher quality display add two tenths. Swap out the GPU with a 4890, they're only $209.. and you got a 9.0 IMO because another 4890 down the road and you're set. I'm a Nv guy usually but the 4890 is superb, kills too many Nv's at 30-50% less $. I like all of your parts except 2, but not bad compared to other similarly priced hardware.

Thanks for the review!.. I tossed that vid card in there..but im not decided yet...wanted to wait to get a new DX11 card...but if the release date is the 11th of September this year then they are keeping a tight lid on it...cant find anything about it on the AMD/ATI website...and no pre-orders or anything on the newegg website...

The monitor I admit is old I have had it a while...but its still working for me currently...im deciding what later monitor upgrade I should get...but it will be very last on my list..

First, easy to rate 8.2, 9800M Gpu would get 8.5, and a better Cpu could get you another tenth, as much as 3 tenths for a really good Cpu, not to say your Cpu isn't good tho, it is. My notebook scores aren't scalable with my desktop scores.

I'm well overdue for sleep, but at a glance around 8.7. Given the GPU, drives/RAID. A great Cpu or real nice OC could see 3 tenths, a 2nd Gpu 3 more tenths, but I'll have another look tomorrow.

I'm very short on cash right now, and had a strict budget but I was able to put together this PC for the time being for all of $550 shipped :D It should be a nice little upgrade over my old P4 2.8 and 6800GT!

ASUS P5Q Deluxe
Intel e5200
Corsair XMS2 4GB PC2-8500
XFX Radeon HD 4850
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
Corsair VX550
Coolermaster CM690

Who says PC gaming costs thousands :P

lhwj

Since you were tight on money I am very surprised you didn't get the 400 watt Corsair, which costs less than half of the VX550. But well done indeed, you managed to get everything right without cheaping out on crucial parts. 7.2.

Nice system, did you build it yourself or use a builder. I'd give it a 8.3. Some would knock it for XP instead of Vista and therefore only 2 GB of RAM. But I'm not because it is a solid performer. Is it overclocked?

Yes, you are right I was looking at the other specs. But yes, you can run Crysis on his OS, but as you are pointing out in the first place, he is probably not doing so, as it is not likely the primary purpose of that machine.

But I would like to ask him if he does and how well do games like Crysis play on his laptop.

Nooo, how could you rate his three year old build  because no one else ever did :(

sadly those parts are now all sitting unused(besides the video card, now with stock cooling)....i used the PSU for awhile for something else, but now it has rejoined the rest...I guess my intention is to reassemble it all(including its dual E500 and E100 Sony Trinitron monitors, original case, and nice 2.1 Altec Lansing speakers) along with the original 6800GT I had in it(which I would remount the ZAL+Delta cooling) into a rig for my Mad Scientist Lab/Laundry Room...with those Delta fans, it sounds like a T.I.E fighter, but hey, I still love it, as it was one of the most 'dramatic' computers I ever built

We know it will run Crysis, I know it will easily.. I was referring to the listed OS's you have installed on it... last time I checked Crysis only ran on a system With windows installed..

I also heard that steam doesnt fully work either, so any games DLed probably wont run until you switch one of your OS's to Windows..

BUT... steveroger says you can...so more power to ya I guess..

There's too many pages to look through, has anyone bested my 9.6 yet? Well everyone rates differently, so how about is there anyone that built a stronger machine than I, I guess? No ego crap, just curious really. I mean, there's no way I have the best PC on here, no damn way, I spent like...$1,800, less the rebates, was over 2k before. It would be a first...jeez.

Here lemme grab those specs, I've since overclocked my Gpu's quite a bit, I figured why not;

Cpu: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb @ 3.7 Ghz
Memory: 4GB 1066 DDR2 Ram @ 1209mhz
Gpu's: (2) BFG NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 H2O 3584MB Heavily OC'd ThermoIntelligence [Quad] SLI
Display: 23" HD 1920x1200 & Sony 42" HDTV 1080P<(Used for Simulators only, FSX, LFS and Arma II)
Periphs: Logitech G5/G15/G25/THX Z-2300/Pro Gaming Headset
Misc Hardware: Cirrus II for FSX

There must be someone out there with an equal GPU setup but with like a $1,000 Intel Cpu that's OC'd insanely.

Edit: Forgive the slight off topic, but maybe it's okay since I've rated and participated a lot :) Thanks for any info guys, there must be at least a few better.

Pretty sweet, huh? Am I making any mistakes?

I might wait just a bit to see how the GX295 cards are priced, or if their release causes the GX280 card prices to fall. I've also been looking at EVGA video cards; I'll probably go with whichever has the best warranty.

I'm pretty stoked. W00t!

Hmmm I bet Valve pays you really well :D. 9.7, it's almost perfect!

Well it's not fair because he only had one GTX280 but that was before anything newer was released yet :D

I don't go into such great detail, I guess it matters to the hardcore and enthusiasts. IMO because my Cpu can and certainly does keep my 4 Gpu's up to speed, I think I'd beat that machine in a 3dMark test, but not PCMark, his Cpu and memory are top notch. He has a kickass HDD! Otherwise we're very very even, but so many ppl are like, up in the air about the case I use, but I assure it's absolutely functional, the looks are a bonus; that is if you like it. The fans move a ton of air, the case stays ice cold. http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/files/detail/a380plus.jpg

I can OC my Cpu quite a bit more, I simply do not need to. That's a very nice machine, I'm curious who would win out in a game that doesn't support my second 295. With his Cpu and Memory being a bit better.

This is my present rig. I'm thinking about getting the BFG 295 w/the Danger Den waterblock...or wait for the Nvidia to release the 300 series chips.
I mainly play Left 4 Dead and this machine runs it with all settings all the way up without any problems.

Intel QX-9650 cooled with Cool It Freezone Elite Overclocked to 3.82GHz
Thermaltake 1200W Truepower
BFG 280 H20 cooled with Danger Den gear
2 Plextor PX-716AL ATA Drive
4 WD 150 GB Raptors SATA in RAID 0
2 Seagate 1,000 GB SATA (my backup & user file drives)
ASUS Rampage Extreme - Zalman RESERATOR 1 Plus cooling the NB & MOSFETS

Screw that 9.0, I give you a 9.3. I’m not really fan of the case, but I give points for such an original look. Also I like the fact you have the only other BFG Gpu with Danger Den gear like my rig. More Gpu power and I’ll give you a higher score than mine, match my Gpu’s, 10.0, promise. You be winner.

9.0 buddy, love the armor, good OS, you can go further on ur Cpu, I’ll give 1 point for that. Automatically get a full 0.5 for using RAID, IMHO, love that you use a BFG card, they’re number ♥♥♥in ONE. Great sound card, and I like what you did with your memory, great rig.

My setup is getting a little old now compared to some I am seeing on the thread :(

I like that you threw in a 9800GT for the Nvidia Physx, smart idea, you can enjoy them without any fps hit now, well done. Lots of hard drives, would prefer raid with one bit storage, but still gets the job done. Decent Psu and Case, not a fan of Razer, but respect those who use them just the same, quality hardware. If your 38” flat screen that you’re sending your desktop to HDTV? Using HDMI or component or?

Well, best I would score because of the amount of hardware 8.6. If it’s not a HDTV 8.4, which is still a good score. TIP: Watch out for issue with some games running 8 gigs ram, tho you probably know that already, nice rig. But IMO I’d run a RAID and grab a 1TB for storage, but it’s not like you gotta do things the way everyone else does, and in a way it’s refreshing to see something simpler and just to the point. I’ll just even the score, 8.5. Nice rig. And EVGA is my favorite Gpu sub vender other than BFG, good choice, they’ll take good care of you.

Core I7 overclocked 4.2 GHz watercooled
Silverstone 1500W
4x Hitachi Ultrastar 450GB 1500rpm
12 GB DDR3
2x 4870x2

Kickass honestly, but why not go with a RAID setup with such a nasty system…well honestly, there’ve been times I’ve gones years not running RAID, so I don’t subtract, only add half a full point for using it. I gotta give you a 9.4, add more information and pics and I think I’d go as high as 9.5.

Unfortunately, my mobo will only support one Nvidia card as it does not have an SLI controller chip on it.
Once the 3.2 wafers are available, I will consider upgrading the CPU/mobo/memory and GPUs.
I'm not all that crazy about the case either, mainly because the way the drives mount-if I want to use two screws on each side, I have to remove the drive cage in order to swap drives.
I'd also like a case where the drives plug in towards the back thus eliminating a LOT of wiring from view.
Also, the case only holds 9 drives & I'd like to be able to run the documents drive on a 6-disk RAID 5 w/6 Velosiraptors.

Nice. Just wondering what kind of pipe is feeding your box?My internet connection? Comcast broadband.

How many virtuals are you running?None; I have no need for virtual machines. This machine is a database server, so I need all the memory for cache and workspace for the server. My client machine (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8747382&postcount=2377) is built for both I/O and graphics.

Birds of a feather, yes?Kind of; you have a similar build, but it is much newer and faster.

SQL Server, mostly. I worked on SQL Server while I was at Microsoft, and I like to study large databases when I have time.

This is a surprising thread, where an aggressive new i7 965 build rates a 9.7, but a 5 year-old server with a crappy disk drive subsystem gets 10/10.

0/10 - It doesn't have a video card ;)

From an overall system perspective not knowing the video card, probably 4/10. There are much better processors on the market if you want to double them up. The case is very nice, the power supply is from a very good company, the drives are so-so but plenty of storage at less speed than I would like in a server, and a lot of RAM.

0/10 - It doesn't have a video card ;)The onboard video is an ATI Rage 8. It's a server, and I largely use it as such -- more from Remote Desktop or just through SQL Server rather than at the console.

There are much better processors on the market if you want to double them up.There are now, yes. When I built it five years ago, it was a high-end rig. Since it's not a production server, spending money on faster drives isn't really justified.

I rated it 10/10 because even though its old it can still do plenty...and I want something similar for my purposes..

Wanted to build a dual or quad six-core Opteron one.. but dont have the cash atm so I plan on just building several computers and networking them together..since I have the parts..just not enough cases yet..

And I dont like I7 systems ..I like AMD and sticking with it, but the I7 systems being built here deserve a rating..they are pretty uber anyway..
The one I just built cant touch even close to any of these I7's...

Yeah, I got a 7.5 ona system that's pretty high end. Did you say a i7 965 rated a 9.7? I have a 965 system that only rated a 7. I thought that was actually a decent score, becasue there is always room for improvement, but on the same token I almost have to ask the question "By what measure now". At first it seemed like pretty good reasons, but for comparison sake is almost an arbitrary number now.

Oh, BTW, there is a belief floating around here that the X58 is "overpriced and unnecessary"...do any of you owners feel that way? I know I don;t as my system is being utilized at 100% 24/7 and eventhough it has what is arguably the most powerful stuff money can buy in it, it still isn't powerul enough to do these simulations in real time. Maybe I should post another thread on that.

Did you say a i7 965 rated a 9.7?

Yes, I rated Mike's PC 9.7 earlier. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8747428&postcount=2378

I have a 965 system that only rated a 7.

Yeah that's T Rush for you. Most of us here rate by pure performance, but he likes to take into account value for money, overall system balance, looks, etc. I just might start doing that in future ;) I created a criteria in February and it badly needs updating. (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9029140&postcount=2693). Nowadays I just rate without referring to anything. (besides previous ratings)

Very respectable server!
I think servers should have their own separate category as they are used differently than our workstations/gaming rigs.

I'd give that box a 8.9 which is far more than I'd give my own server:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
4 GB Corsair PC2-5300
ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe
Corsair 600 Watt PS
250 GB Seagate SATA drive for System Drive
2-1TB Seagate drives which server as backups for the rest of the computers.
NVidia 7600 GS vid card.
Nice Lian-Li case, I forgot which model.

Windows Server Enterprise 2008 64-bit.(TechNet subscriber so I get all the MS software I can use for a fixed price of 250/year)

The server runs L4D and IIS7 which is used to test sites that I'm working on.

I can't find any 64-bit RAID drivers. If I could, the system drive would use 3 of the 250 GB Seagates in a RAID 5 config.

Hoping to upgrade the mobo & processor by the end of the year so I can run the sytem drive in RAID 5.

Drop in for a round of L4D! >>173.9.81.21<<

It is a nice well rounded PC all right, but I'm going to rate it based on gaming performance and there's where your 4850 holds it back a little. It's a great little card, I have one too, but the 4890 now costing what the 4850 used to cost has pushed it down to being "olny" the third most powerful ATi single GPU card. (currently, until the 5800s arrive tomorrow)

The ratings given in this thread are just an arbitrary number; I wouldn't really think everyone is pushing towards a 10/10 score; if your satisfied with your PC it doesn't matter what score you get, my own would probably be a 6 or 7 but I'm perfectly happy with it, I won't upgrade anything for the next year. (perhaps an extra hard disk for backups)

Hey, you have a setup similar to mine, a few differences though. And we got rated very differently...hmm. Nice all the same. :)

You know, before Apple went to the Intel platform in 2006, such a comment would relevant, maybe even funny. However, since then the MacBook, like Levi's here is running Windows natively via bootcamp.

So, giving it a 1 just isn't funny. It just shows how ignorant you are.

macbook pro 15 inch
Intel core 2 duo 2,66 ghz
4 gb 1067 MHz ddr3 ram
Nvidia GeForce 9400M
Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT
320GB hard drive

Anyway, Levi, we can't rate your laptop until you resolve what graphics card you have.

But if you have the 9600GT I'd give you a 8.15.

My mistake, it is the 2.53 Ghz model that has just the 9400m.

I assume that is the 9600 GT with 256MB and 512MB. This is an exception laptop and it runs games really well.

Anyways I hope you researched the right stuff to set it up since currently eyefinity heavily depends on using native display port outputs to work. ^_^

Did you really replace two 280's with two 285's? IMO two 280's is fantastic Gpu power, for probably another two years as well. Did you really pay all that money or did you come across a deal where you were able to get rid of your 280's? Heh, sry I gotta ask.

But I gotta score a 9.4. I got a 9.6, and you're only a very slight tad behind. Your system is probably a little ahead because I only have DDR2 Ram, heavily OC'd but not as good as the kicka$$ DDR3 triple channel heh.. My edge is my quad SLI. I'm curious how your 3d/game score in vantage will be with the two 285's, post please so I can compare to my two 295 H20's. Thx.

So if anyone is curious about my scale, I'm going by the average scores I got for my old and new rig, "but" only those scores from people I know for certain are very smart, enthusiast types.

8.8. Hard drive, second Gpu, and you would be looking at a 9.0-9.4, depending, hopefully you have a crossfire ready motherboard. Even if not, with that Cpu, Memory, and Gpu, you've got more than enough to play today's games, and solid for a good 2-3 yrs IMHO. I like your choice, I have the same Cpu, at 3.7 tho :)

I'm gonna give you .5 for not being as brain washed as some of us consumers can be. You took a route to satisfy "your" quality of gaming, and immersion is incredibly important and too often underrated. Because of all hardware named, 9.3. Not the best in any one area, but beyond good in every area, and investment in hardware to bring immersion to a whole new level most gamers have no clue about, with only a small sacrifice in overall system power.

The 2 280's are from my "old" system, it was a Q9650 and EVGA 790i FTW Digital (my wife has it now). I repleaced the 280's with 285's only recently so i didn't pay top dollar for them.

I bought the i7 920 and x58 less than 30 days after they hit the market so i paid quite a bit for both.

I give my system about 9.2. If i had SSD's in raid and Tri-SLI sli i would give it a 9.6.

EVGA has a new enthusiast board that supports 4 PCI-E devices and a new GTX285 Classified. Imagine running 4 GTX 285's. That is true quad SLI IMO.

I also have enough parts for 2 more Q9xxx systems for a total of 4 system's.

I'm done upgrading though, i have spent a fortune the last couple years on parts. Only to realize i will never a cream of crop system. the system may be nice but none of them will even score over 40k in vantage and I'm not into super cooling.

Hey it's all good, I mean, my present rig I just built is the very first time I went after the very best Gpu solution. I've always bought a good Cpu, newest memory, but the average, popular mainstream video card, never SLI/Xfire.

There's no need to be an elitist, or go all out Power PC and spend more time benchmarking fullfilling ego nonesense rather than enjoying great games, with good hardware, and actually playing them the way they were intended to be played, maxed out graphics, resolution. The very best hardware isn't necessary to achieve this, not by a long shot. Hell I love AMD so much I took the Phenom II 955, sitting at 3.7, but cold weather around the corner so that'll go up a bit, SLI board tho, this didn't allow me to use DDR3 memory, I realized this after the purchase of the two GTX 295 H20 DangerDen cards, my first ever SLI solution, Quad. But I didn't buy them retail, I got lucky as hell and got them new, in the box, second hand, economy hit a buddy hard and I was all about helping him and taking the cards off his hands at just over half price.
So, even tho I have a, well, slightly above high end "system", and great Gpu solution, I'm not an elitist at all. I don't benchmark, don't care for any of it, I spend my time just trying to get games to use both Gpu's, and playing my favorite games and enjoying them, that's it.

So my point is, no need to even look at it that way, no need to think or feel like, one should own a killer system at some point, why? Unless you're a 3DMark Pro user and just have a great passion for insane power, "instead" of uber gaming experiences, there's never, ever a need for the very best of each component. I don't regret losing out on DDR3 memory, also I paid next to nothing for my Cpu and mobo, you all know how cheap a 955 black edition is, it's great, and I got lucky as any gamer ever has with the two GTX 295 and water cooling solution. I didn't pay 1,700 total, incredible, considering I sold my old rig for 600, 1100 and I'm good for years.
Nobody needs to spend 2k, 3k, hell some 4-6k. No way, like the guy a few posts above, there's more to gaming than the best Cpu/Gpu combo on the market. Hell, my first moments with the stereoscopic glasses and I thought to myself this is a better investment than any Cpu/Gpu rig I've ever built, it's just great, something brand new, adding to immersion, this is more important than 50k 3DMarks, immersion is everything. Nv physx, Cuda, 3D vision, all worth it.

Sorry for a long post, it's just such an important topic for me, I even advise my friends, "you don't need to be on the edge, no way, if you can play the way "you" want to play, that's enough, you can wait for that brand new chip to fall in price, you absolutely can and should".

Sassycat3172

I agree with you. I rather enjoy the maxed visual over spending a few extra $1000 and just running benchmarks all the time.

9.2 Love it, great Cpu (I have the same one, 955BE Deneb @ 3.7 myself, higher as it gets cold here in the Pocono Mountains) great Cpu, underrated, even tho they get respect, not enough, incredible bang for buck vs i5/i7 and OC like a friggin dream. You still have some overhead as well, great cooling solution and setup, you can make the most of that 955, well done. Great Gpu, and nice that you got a 8600GT for physx, awesome that works for you, hah, great! Raid, very good Psu, rock solid system with all the memory goodness available and a future proof, VERY awesome Radeon. One more Gpu and I gotta score you even with me at 9.6, if you managed to keep that Nv physx I'd give 9.7. This is one of my fav systems so far, I love that you got physx with a AMD/ATI system.

What are the core temps on your cpu on full load using prime95 or linX?
4.2 on air with a C0 should be pretty up there.

Also no one rated my system on the previous page. T_T

I don't see how in the world this system can be anything less than a 9.8. Only think higher would be i7.

OS : Windows7 x64 RTM
Mobo : EVGA SLI x58 classified 759
CPU : Intel Core i7 965 C0/C1 @ 3.8-4.2Ghz(Depending on the season)

GPU : 2-way SLI EVGA 260 c216 Superclock Edition
HDD : 4x Samsung HE753LJ
PSU: KINGWIN Mach 1 1220W

9.6 Very nice. Great OC, very nice CPU HSF, 12GB. Aside from better GPU,s and some SSD theres not much else you could do to this system.

What are the core temps on your cpu on full load using prime95 or linX?

With a Coolermaster V10 in the middle of summer @ 4.2 GHZ w/ 1.38 vcore i was reaching temps of 82C IIRC. i dont care to go past 1.35 and 85C. but i willing to push it a bit.

That was with an old bios. With the new BIOS EVGA has released, and upgrading to the Megahalem, i haven't yet pushed my OC.

With previous BIOS i couldn't get past a base QPI of 140-145 3.0GHz. This new bios i can reach QPI 180 3.78GHz stable with temps of 70c with auto vcore of 1.2. Vdroop HT and turbo on.

The season is cooling down quite a bit. As a result I'm sure i could achieve my old OC of 4.2 without any trouble. Though i have seen very insignificant gains in games between 3.8 and 4.2. Not enough to justify a 24/7 OC @ 4.2.

Ok good your one of the few that actually understand eyefinity, I don't know how many people Ive had to explain that a passive DP->dvi won't work, but they refuse to listen. ^_^Thanks, I did do a little reading up, and consulted my bud who'd gotten it to work. He's sending me a spare Accell active DP->DVI adapter after I've sent him payment.

You guys should pop by guru3d, there's this guy with an amazing system that even have me gaping in disbelief -
i7 965 or Xeon 3580 @4.7ghz
3x 2GB DDR3 1600mhz Corsair Dominator
eVGA X58 4Way SLi/CFX Classified
4x HD5870 in quad CFX config (water cooled)
SilverStone 1500W PSU

The time has come where it's been shown that 2x HD5870 in CFX is being bottlenecked by an i7 965 @3.8ghz for some games at lower to mid res. so my logic is why waste all those hard-earned cash simply to score more FR or higher benchmark scores. It should be about elevating the gaming experience to a higher level for a more immersive gameplay. I did toy with the idea of 3D stereoscopic route, but I don't want to deal with a spliting headache after a few minutes of gaming, tri-monitor gaming seems to be a more viable option for me so when I found out about EyeFinity, I'd kind of went off the deep end.:o Anyway, there are some very nice systems here in SUF, keep it up guys!:)

For my scores to please everyone I'd have to include my scoring process in each post. I'm going by what, well, who I feel are the most knowledgeable on this board who rated my two rigs, and basing off of that. If I got a 9.6, it's hard to give anything more. I'm running two GTX 295 H20's in Quad Sli, Phenom II 955 @ 3.7 and DDR2 @ 1209.

But I am willing to give that system a higher score, regardless of my Quad Sli, just because it's unique and I like it a lot.

I realize that we are really talking about something totally subjective and I think you are really fair. I usually agree with your scoring and you are consistent. But in this case I think that a 5870/with another card for PhysX is slightly better than a quad SLI with 295s.

I suppose what would be helpful is to know what qualifies as a 10 at this point in time.

This thread has always been a subjective thread about how you would rate a computer. It has never been a thread about rating the rater. ;)

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a 10/10. There will always be something just a little better based on opinion.

I agree it is subjective. And it doesn't bother me that a 10 is unattainable. I should change my question a little.

@DHRammstein what configuration in your subjective opinion approaches a 10 at this point in time. Or anybody else for that matter.

This isn't a throw-down just something I would like to discuss.

If this needs it's own thread, that's fine, let me know or move it.

At this point in time everything is the same except I dont have the HD5870 yet... UPS mail is taking their very sweet time getting here..ordered it on the 7th and its supposed to be 2day air..they claim to have delayed it due to a holiday but most people still had to work on that day..

But it should be as simple as putting in the new card and configuring the monitor..I shouldnt have to change anything else...so that Nvidia card should still work just fine..

I don't see how in the world this system can be anything less than a 9.8. Only think higher would be i7.Rating here is very subjective and that's the way I like it. There's no yardstick whereby we can definitively state that system A should score this much and system B score that much. Anyway, as ihwj had stated, with the release of the HD58xx series of cards, the rating system here would have to take a little re-adjustment. As a single GPU HD5870 is able to match and surpass a two GPU 295GTX, it resets the bar somewhat. For eg, looks at what this system scores with a user here -

OS : Windows7 x64 RTM
Mobo : EVGA SLI x58 classified 759
CPU : Intel Core i7 965 C0/C1 @ 3.8-4.2Ghz(Depending on the season)
HS : Noctua NH-U12P (Push/Pull Fans)
RAM : 12gb (2x Mushkin 998679 3x1gb 1600MHz 7-8-7-20-74)
GPU : 2-way SLI EVGA 260 c216 Superclock Edition
HDD : 4x Samsung HE753LJ
PSU: KINGWIN Mach 1 1220W

This system rates a 9.6, but mine -
QX9650 @3.9ghz
Asus P5E X38
6GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800
2x HD5870 in CFX mode
3x WD Raptor + WD 640GB Caviar
X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS

Logitech Z-5500 5.1
Razer HP1 5.1 headset
Soldam XR-1 Blackknight
64bit Vista HP SP2
Benq FP241W + 2x Benq G2400WD with ATi EyeFinity (Tri-monitor gaming babe!

Mine gets a 9.3, if you compare the system, I lose to his cuz he has an i7 965 Extreme CPU, mine's only the C2Q X9650 which is also an Extreme CPU, but obviously no match for the i7. Now, if you compare the vid cards, my CFX HD5870's so ownz his SLi'ed GTX260 216 core, but yet I scored lower. At higher res, w/o CPU bottleneck, my cards would run circles round his. If CPU should prove a bottleneck, I'd still be able to run at higher res and up eye candy simply becuz my cards would still have the 'reserve' to muscle thru any game. But do you see me deriding or rebutting his score? Nope, I do not see a need to simply becuz I accept that this is so subjective....:) Some place more emphasis on CPU, some on GPU, while others on overall system performance, like I'd said, no carved in stone yardstick can be used...

I dunno. Dual i7-975's OC'ed, 48GB RAM, 24 256GB SSD's in RAID 50, quad 5870s, Fibre-Channel or 10GbE, a killer sound card, 12 monitors in Eyefinity - that would get a 10/10 for me. The problem is that as new hardware comes out, scores drop.

But it doesn't have a custom hand-built HL2 case that uses a crowbar as part of the cooling with Hardware monitoring displays and the added feature to turn off the fish tank light in the other room with a keyboard shortcut does it!?

Just when I thought I spent way too much on mine already..I see yours and the guys comp you put there...and about fall out of my chair...lol...I should have given him a higher score after looking at it with more detail..but I figured I would respond since its rate your computer thread...

Since I didnt measure things right(aka used my kids 12" ruler), the damn HD5870 wont fit in my case unless I mod it or remove my raptors or both..I put those in raid because I didnt want to spend 300+ on a good controller card to RAID0 the Agility SSD's..since the onboard controller seems to be messed up..it keeps locking the drives up so I cant access them..

So change #8 ill have to remove the raptors and their controller card.. will that lower my score? :-) http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11545946&postcount=3647

I couldn't possibly score anything a 10/10. I mean, there are people out there who buy things the day they come out, and go nuts on all kinds of hardware, and spend more than $15,000, and still I won't. There is no perfect PC.

The best thing to do is find a person who's ratings you find are fair and consistent, and ask them to rate your PC. Even ask why the score is what it is. I try to give short explanations, but not everyone will.

I give your system a 9.4

curious.. Why the V10? you can get better HSF's for less than half the price and weight and dimensions.

dont get me wrong. i use to have a v10 on my i7 920. it did pretty well. but for the price it was crap.

I now have a Megahalem w/2x 133CFM in a push pull. sure its louder but it cost much less and performs way better.

When rating, bear in mind that this is a laptop (coupled with a decent docking solution for home):

Laptop itself: Thinkpad R61 (Nvidia Quador NVS140M) with C2D T7700, 8GB ram, Seagate ST9500420ASG, 1680x1050 display.
Docking handles two eSATA drives (Seagate FreeAgent XTreme 1TB), Eizo S2242WS, Keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II), mouse (Intellimouse Explorer 3), and Creative x-fi 5.1 (with a decent amplifier rig).

Does manage source-games in 1920x1200 when docked. ;)

thanks. And it's the heat mainly. See my country is blazing hot (32-36 deg celcius ambient temp daily), and when I try gaming (and I love to game) the card's temps get very high. The newer cards would be cooler, handle more, and due to my hardware-limitation of never being able to put SLI in, it'd fit me better. Also a TDP of 75W on the video card and 130W on the processor isn't nice for battery life hehe

I probably wouldn't upgrade right away, or even that soon, but at some point I plan to do it. For now though it works wonderfully

I think as a rule of thumb, no single high-end GPU system should be rated at 9.0 or higher....doesn't matter what CPU/GPU are being used. Though there isn't any standard yardstick by which to compare, single GPU system should NOT be rated THAT high. I ain't complainin' none, just that I see an i7 920 + GTX275 getting 9.4 and mine - X9650 + 2x HD5870 CFX getting 9.3 has me befuddled. Sure, the 920 is a better CPU, but a single HD5870 whups a GTX275, and I have two!

ROFL ..still going on about that?...you wanna bigger score than everyone else ...here ill give you a cookie and a 9.9... you happy now? :DNo, don't need a bigger score....just weird that everyone seems to see an i7 and hey presto, >9.0 score. As I've said, not really interested in what my score is, it's just that subjective or not, there should be a certain standard or logic to it. I think ihwj had said that with the release of the HD58xx series, a new benchmark bar has been set. I'm saying that it's weird that a single GTX275 (which benchmark has show to lose out to a HD5870 by a fair margin) + i7 920 rates higher than a X9650 (yes, granted it's slower than the i7) but a dual HD5870 rates lower as well.....it should score lower than mine (see? I don't need a higher score!:p :D ). Afterall, isn't this forum more focused on gaming?

The 4870 is actually faster than the GTX 260.ATI makes there cards cheaper because Nvidia got most of the market for some strange reason due to some crap that happened awhile ago.Nvidia cards also tend to cost more to make due to large die size.ATI currently has the best cards at every price point so i have no idea why anyone is even bothering with nvidia until they can get there next gen cards out (lord knows when that will be)

nVidia owns most of the market share because people seem to have more problems using ATI cards for things like video rendering/making and similar things. I have friends who use macs with 8 core processors at their job (advertising agencies etc) and they complained when pushing their ATI cards, they got artifacts on the screen and errors; the cards got fried, etc. nVidia doesn't do that, also, nVidia uses FAR less power than ATI cards, and nVidia owns the rights to their PhysX hardware capabilities.

ATI cards may seem cheaper at first too, but for games where physics can be done on the GPU or the CPU, ATI requires better CPU speeds (more money) due to their lack of PhysX, and on the whole a better PSU (more money). I'm not defending nVidia, as I believe their prices a bit on the high side as well, but I love their PhysX and I love how my games work using them, maybe other people just feel the same?

Anyway, the first paragraph is why nVidia prices their cards so high. It's like intel, they don't care about the competition, they go at their own pace and they get their share of advertising in (Starting many games = "nVidia, the way it's meant to be played" followed by *intel logo & sound* or "runs great on <insert either Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Extreme or Core i7 logos here>"). They can keep their prices high because there are people who are going to want, buy and use their products. Even if the average man doesn't

You need to put in the RAM speed.
I'd give it a 7.5 if it was DDR2 800; the video card is pretty old and 2GB of ram just isn't that awesome anymore. The processor doesn't match the rest of the system (it's very strong compared to 2GB of RAM and an 8800GT)
Everything else seems good though, liking the 10,000 RPM HDD

I give you a 9.5 because 12GB of RAM with an 8 core processorat say... 3.6GHz is better than 6GB RAM with a 4GHz 8 core processor. Aside from that, it's an impressive system, I'd say get a 1000W PSU so as time goes on and the PSU degrades it'll still give you more than enough power.
If you had that and the 12GB with slightly slower clock, I'd give you a full 10

It's not 8-core, it's a quad-core with hyperthreading.

It's an effective 8 core machine. When I run GTA 4 with my i7-950, GTA pumps up 4 cores in Task Manager, and my system uses the rest of its stuff with the remaining 4. I know there is a difference between actual and effective, but the effective side is what usually prevails in the world of computers. Even in class, we've compared an ATI card and a nVidia card, both in the same effective performance class, and the ATI will blow it away on paper without breaking a sweat. Nobody needs an i7 @ 4GHz for anything, it's just the standard everybody seems to want to OC their 920s to. For what reason I have no idea.

I cannot overclock my 950 before you ask, so I don't know if there's some angelic or god-like feeling from having a 4.0GHz i7. Just saying

Are you running stock clocks on that 920?

TroyLeslie

Yes it is stock. I built it for a guy from work so I left it stock.
Told him that I ran it at 3.6 gigs just fine for 3 days that if he wants it faster I will over clock it for him.

Thanks! It's a shame any SSD big enough to hold my Steam Folder and OS would cost nearly half the price of the rest of it.

Some day though... Well actually some day everyone will have SSDs.

7.5 for ddr2 memory and HD48XX series is now a gen old.An SSD would also increase your score as would dedicated physx.Overall a superb gaming system.

wow this system tears through some on here that have 9.0 scores. makes me sad. oh well christmas is comming and i think the wife got me a 920 D0 :). once i get my hands on that then i'll really be able to unleash these 4890's. they hit a speed wall with current cpu limitations.

i tried dedicated physX but it would appear that physX is dumb on purpose to not cooperate with ATI. no matter becasue havok physics engine is working better with ATI now. you should see CoD:MW2 @ beyond 1080P maximum graphic detail. ther are newspapers, dirt, and lots of other debris flying around. best extra physics game i have played so far really noticed the extra crap this time.

you are using 2 monitors, so i assume you are multitasking? depending on what you are multitasking with x64 might be faster. but most definetly win7 will help you out. might want to see about grabbing a faster cpu too if you are truly using all that desktop space. just an opinion, and i didnt check to see what your mobo will support. you might already have the top cou for it afaik.

looks good to me. imo get win7 and 2 more GB of memory. i would say your perfromance would be just a touch below my rig depending on clock speeds. so i guess around hereabouts thats a 7.0/10

serously how does one get a 10/10 ? do you have to spend 5 grand or sumthing?

The reason it is rated a 7.5 is because the HD5xxx series with dx11 was just released. There is no ssd eather + its ddr2 which has gone into obsolescence.Doesn't make the system anny less badass though. My personal system only scores a 9.0 on my scail(need a second 5870 but they are hard to find)

Thank northy. ya i multi task alot. about 2 weeks ago i looked at my mobo specs and maxed the ram and processor and video card out.
For sum reason it wont use a PCIE 2.0 so i had to stick with just PCIE which was a bummer... but it works!

Wow... just...

I'd give that
9.8 now
10.0 with CF
If you only account for current games.

Personally I'm willing to give out 10s for gaming, because theres a point where you never drop below a noticable framerate like ever.

Damn, nice rig. 8.5/10

Mine:

Stock desktop: HP Pavilion a1250n

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+

Memory: 2 GB DDR PC3200 400mhz (Corsair)

Graphics Card: PNY Geforce 9600GT 512mb

Power Supply: OCZ 700W GameXStream

Monitor: Acer X223w (22" 5ms) @ 1680 x 1050

hard Drive: 250GB

OS: Windows XP Professional 32bit (aahhhh yea)

Yea, its a pretty old machine but it plays all Source games, COD 4, Bioshock, and Crysis pretty well. The only thing is the case is so small it tends to run hot so I had to add a few case fans. And the PSU I got is completely overkill.

solid build to my eyes. i think because of the stock nature of it, its worthy of a 7.5 BUT with some tweaking i bet you could squeeze it some and gain sum points. at least you know there is PLENTY of room to grow with that rig!

more info would make it easier, but form what you have said you have a laptop. probly a year old. i guess my rating to you would be 5 / 10. your not going to break any records with that but i bet it plays source games well enough ?
