2000+ is slow. 2800+ would be consdered minimum now to play games in a decent way. especially wiht all the dual cores.
1 gig ram is fine.
6600TD isnt good. the 6600GT would have been a much better choice.
80 gig hard drive, I need you speed to know how it is though, but whatever yo want; if yo dont have a lot on them, then80 gig is cool.
sound card is good I think.
Crap, I meant 2x 80 GB.
And I got the 6600 TD as an upgrade from the 9600 PRO.

the 6600 series are bad, just as the 6200 series. the 6600GT isthe only good one from the series. I dont mean bad as in ad, its just they are to expensive for what they deliver. thats why the 6600GT is recomended.
and Icant really see you having a lot of gain from going to a 6600td froma 9600 pro.
did you get a lot of increases?

this is probably the best score a 754 mobo could get I think. maybe a bit more through higher OCs.
how does the 7800gs play if Imay ask? css/hl2/fc/*Q4/fear etc?

with your 7800, You should buy a better cpu, or OC this one with a newer cooler. your 3200+ is a bottleneck for your 7800.

ya hes right -|H3adsh0t|- bottleneck to the max
srry, but for all that money, your 7800gt is runing like a 6800gt or even less

It's not a severe bottleneck at all. There is not such a huge difference between processors as everyone sort of gets in there heads.. it may not be performing as well as it could, but a small OC would fix that.

yes you are right, but any bottle neck at all is completely pointless, you waste you other components
pluse starting with a bett cpu will give you better upgrade for the future

not true, I have a 3500+ and i upgraded my X1800XL to a X1900XTX and it only doubled my fps in some games, increased by 30fps in very cpu intensive source... real cpu bottleneck huh

i bet if you had a 4000+ you would get another 50-80fps instead of the 30
and what about in 2-3 years? will you beable to upgrade your videocard to what ever it is then and not get a bottle neck?????
bu if you have a 4400+ you still would or better yet, a fx-60, then you would
pluse better cpu = better performance and speed outsidde of your gaming

So the processor wont a problem... so is this correct (see my previous post):
+ 512 MB RAM (makes 1 gig)
+ Videocard 128 MB DirectX 9 AGP (because my motherboard had AGP slot)
+ And maybe another motherboard or CPU? Can you tell me some more about the motherboard and CPU?
For the Videocard, I can order a GeFore 6600, which support DirectX9.0, SM 3.0, 128 MB + AGP. Will this be okay for the HDR?
Thank you all,
Ruben

Hahaha, that would be great noga. Ill tell you my question now :)
Look, I am going to buy some stuff to get HDR for my machine. But I want to make sure I'll buy the right stuff and make sure I WILL be able to play FULL HDR then. This will be the products I'll buy:
+ 512 MB RAM (makes 1 gig)
+ Videocard 128 MB DirectX 9 AGP SM 3.0(because my motherboard had AGP slot)
+ And maybe IF NEEDED another motherboard or CPU? Can you tell me some more about the motherboard and CPU?
For the Videocard, I can order a GeFore 6600GT, which support DirectX9.0, SM 3.0, 128 MB + AGP. Will this be okay for the HDR?
So then my processor will have 2.8 GHz (OC isnt possible dont ask why, its just NOT possible), and my new GeForce 6600gt and 1 gig ram. What will be my FPS with all settings maxed out? If its under 25/30, then what must be upgraded to get avarage above 30 fps on max settings?
Thanks noga and others for looking after my post :)

A P4 2.8 and 6600GT are going to struggle with HDR, unless you signifigantly lower the resolution and / or settings.
I recommend at least a 6800GS, and since you can't OC, a 3200 - 3500.

9.1/10 120 gig isnt that much, but thats not important.
that 3800+ can EASILY be OCed to 4400+ with a new cooler.

What would a super dream machine like this( i dont own it) get?
AMD Athlon FX 60 OC to 3.0 GHz
4 GB of XMS RAM (4 sticks)
ATI Radeon X1900XTX
ATI Radeon X1900 Crossfire edition
Asus Crossfire Motherboard
Dual 150GB WD Raptors in Raid 0
Dual 500GB drives (1TB total)

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi
Just asking what this would get if anyone owned it.

Well obviouslly 10/10 like common.
Why:
1. Normally ppl tend to get sli/cf with gfx cards that are not the best of the best. When getting sli/cf you need to the best of the best cards, otherwise it's pointless, because I can easly say 1 gfx card is better the 2 gfx cards in sli/cf, but you see I can't say that with 2 x1900xtx.
2. The fx-60 is the best and last cpu that will support socket 939, and it is the best dual core out right now.
3. X4 1 gig...that is soooo much but hey that the best you can even go. :)
4. Sound card is great
5. 1KW of power....I am speech less.
dark666angel

10/10 4s sure.
impossible to go further.
why is 4 gig X ram better than 2 gig X ram btw?

Im guessing that it gives more room for expandability and more programs to run flawlessly.

that would be one hell of a machine.
something to think about thought
i dont know for other cpu, but for mine whitch is a amd 64x2 4400
on my board (asus a8n-sli premium), when the four slot are occupy whit memory(dual ddr) the board throtle back the fsb to 333mh in lieu of 400
it seem to have something to do whit the weight the memory put on the memory controller(so i read on asus forum)
6.7 i cant agree with i believe its an 7.5-7.8 by todays standards. You all also need to realize that there are very few programs that utilize dual cores so they arent as unholy as you all think. I also have a opteron 165 dualcore that was in this same setup. It didnt score as high and has been passed on to my father.

Look at the virtual 10 above you.
He would need 2 to 4 times as much good RAM (value ram? how much in sync OCing is he going to do?), the best processor you can buy, a second GPU, and a bigger HD.
I give it a 7.6.

Yeah, FPS is better, quality is a little bit better. That's for CS:S.
As for BF2, HOLY ????! The game runs so fast! With my Radeon, it took like 5 minutes after you join the game for the lag to stop. With this nVidia, it runs smoothly from the beginning.
I guess they really do mean it when they say nVidia plays BF2 better.

well, you did prove the guys point now.
you gave one test from one game... 1 game doesnt prove anything dude.
plus, even the lowest card in that test could run BF 2 in 1600 1200 4X 16X. so why would you pay 100$ extra if you dont notice the difference?

Lol, it probably wouldn't be that fast since most games can barely even utilize one core and never signifigantly more then 900MB of RAM. :p

When a game (like BF2) is optimized for nVidia, it means like a 7800GTX 256 will probably beat an x1800xt (spouting these off btw), not that a GeForce4 will beat an 1800xt.
No kidding the x1900 wins.. wth did you think would happen?

thank you, that thread made my day.
also i only used one test because the original comment was "i guess they mean it when they say nv plays BF2 better" i proved that wrong, if i wanted to show benchmarks of the X1900 and X1800 owning i could of but i was proving the whole BF2 favors nvidia thing wrong because it is infact incorrect

Maybe nVidia doesn't perform any better (it's not like BF2 could give a large advantage) but they do "favor" nVidia.. considering when you start up the game there's an nVidia symbol. Just like HL2 "favors" ATi.

thats marketing... doesn't have anything to do with who will perform better. Look at any high rez+ eye candy bench in BF2... X1800XL>7800 GT, X1800XT>GTX, X1900XT>GTX 512, also HL2 doesnt favor ATI the nv 6 and 7series run just as well as the X and X1 series, they only favored ATI when the top end was the 9800 and FX5900 and the nv card didn't run DX9 properly.

Its true about IQ though. that the 1800 series beat the 7800 series.
IQ is important imo. its not all just fps that counts.

Did you read what you quoted? I said there may be know FPS increase on one company but HL2 / VALVe certainly "favors" (as in supports) ATi.. since they're essentially business partners.

Oh come on.
Everyone knows that the 1900 and 7900 is the generation meant to compete with each other.
Dont compare the 512 to the 1900, as they are different generations. Yes, it is expensive, because it is a previous inefficient generation.

The 1800xt was suppose to be the how the x1900xt is..in terms of performance, but ATI wasen't on time for that.
what you gonna do. :)
but either way ATI is making a huge profit from the x1900xt's.
Don't think ATI feels they made a mistake...simply becuase the money is rolling in for the right "now".

Actually the X1800's were exactly what they were supposed to be, the problem is a problem in manufacturing was making them unable to hit the clocks the chip was designed for, once they sorted it out they taped out again and got the chip out. The X1800 series was intended for a may release... and if it had been released in may everyone would have praised it. The X1900 is not "what the R520 was supposed to be" the X1900 is the Q1 refresh that was 100% on schedule so they released it on time.

Well, I think the proc is a little weak, woulda picked at least a 4400+. (Shoulda bought a SATA and upgraded the CPU to a 4200+ at a minimum.) And the 4x512 is really weak. Why would you screw the FSB like that? Shoulda went 2x1GB.
But your GPU and monitor are gold. Good call there!
I give it 6.8/10.

that would be a 9.5/10
seeing that 2x x1900xtx are faster.
if you replaced it with 2x x1900xtx's then yes 10/10.

the RAM, dump the 4 sticks for 2x1GB
also, the FX60 is a horrendous waste of money - a small OC from a cheaper cpu would give you the same speed.

Lets see...
o AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz
o nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS: 5.5bn texels/sec, 256MB
o MSI K8N Diamond Mobo: 1000 FSB, Dynamic overclocking technology or summit
o Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit (built-in to mobo)
o 1GB Kingston DDR400 RAM
o Hiper 525W Triple fan PSU
o Western Digital 200GB HDD
o Windows XP Home
o Groovy case with 3 fans built-in! lol
Altogether the comp has 9 fans! And according to MSI CoreCenter, the CPU temp never goes above 40°C when running CS:S @ 4 x FSAA, 16 x AF, 1280 x 960 resolution without overclocking anything!
I am getting a new laptop and i wanted to know if it could play hl2 and all its mods.
Features:
CPU, Mobile AMD Turion™64 MT-40 CPU @ 2.2GHz 1MB Cache Ultra Low Voltage 25Watt w/ HyperTransport Technology
MOTHERBOARD, ATI RX 480M + ATI SB 400 Chipset Mainboard
MEMORY, 2GB CORSAIR XMS NOTEBOOK MEMORY
VIDEO CARD, ATI Mobility Radeon X700 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) 128MB VRAM Video
HARD DRIVE, 80GB 7200RPM ULTRA ATA 100 HARD DRIVE
OS, Windows® XP Professional

AMD Athlon X2 4000+
ATI x850 xt
1024 mb OCZ 3200 DDR
2x 36gb 10000rpm raptors
M-Audio Revolution 7.1
sigh...
I wish games would be more CPU intensive because even now i can encode video and still play cs:s or dod:s without too much noticable slowdown

It's pretty damn expensive, and there are definitely some better deals, but if you have the cash, it's sweet.

For a 10/10 system, you need the absolute best of the best. One x1900xtx is not the best. Two are. So no, one is not enough for a 10/10 system.

I don't personally know the answer to that one, but IMO anything marked "fatal1ty" is just a marketing ploy.
And, once again, raid 0 is only necessary for a 10/10 system. When you're paying that much for a CPU / GPU, I think you can afford to double your HD.
lol, and slow down on the questions mate ;)

value for money it is. Ł280 more expensive than the 4800+ X2 - for just an unlocked multipier and 200mhz speed increase.
over twice the price of of a 4400+ X2 for 400mhz increase.
what i was getting at is these tiny bumps in speeds are almost invisible to the eye in games/apps and with a small overclock you can usually exceed the performance of a stock FX60.
if your pockets are deep enough and you are well aware that the FX60 isn't going to make a day and night difference over a lower model then go for it.

I'll be adding a Presler 950 and clock it to at least 4GHz along with an nForce4 motherboard and 2GB of DDR2 in the near future.
I wouldn't mind going SLi but I'm waiting until I see some benchies. At the moment it looks like the 7900 GT 256Mb is just a slightly faster 7800 GTX so if the 7900 GTX 512MB's cost a bomb I'll probably just add a second 7800 GTX.

hmm, that looks like a solid build, but id really upgrade so that id only use 2 dimm slots, using 4 slots kind of messes with latency, but still solid. also you could call me a bit of a fan boy but i heart AMD processors, my last was an intel 3.0 prescott though, oc'd to 3.6. good luck!
oh and id just get another 7800GTX if i were you, price drop soon :D

It's good to see that you're adding another 1GB of RAM (though another 512MB would be just as fine). Aside from that there isn't really anything else I can think you would want to do bar getting a more powerful graphics card and moving to an Audigy 2 ZS or X-Fi.
I prefer to have pretty high end graphics myself but I did used to own a 6600 GT 256MB which was pretty damn good for running DOOM 3 on High @ 1024x768.

ok money aside, is liquid cooling better than fan cooling or does it still have to many hardware problems. Cause i heard somewhere that its not reliable is this true? or is it just better if you have the money?

Ok I just ordered this system to play on my 50 inch sony HD flat screen hooked up to my yamaha home theatre
*AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ (Dual Core) 64 Bit Socket 939 1024K Cache
*ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce4
*1GB PC 3200 DDR400
*GeForce 6600 256Mb DDR PCI EXpress 16X
*160.0GB Maxtor 7200rpm
*Sound Blaster Audigy-2 ZS 7.1
*PowMax Black Mid Tower ATX Case 400W w/ Front USB
Paying 1000 for it brand new, ive been pricing for about 3 days and this is the best deal I have come across. Can I over clock this thing? If so am I going to need more power and more fans? Noob when it comes to over clocking any tips or speculations on this system?
*also, what kind of fps do you think i can get from this running dod? And DOD supports eax 7.1 right? I think my home theatre is 5.1 dolby digital will this work properly with it? Thanks!

bit of a shame to put that card into a nice rig like that, high details and HDR on DoD will hurt the performance.
should have got 6800GS at least, imo
also you might want to check out the spec of that PSU, often the ones you get with the case are junk

from what I read in alot of PC magazines, the air cooling still outperforms the water coolings.
its weird, but thats all I read. havent read anything good about the water coolings so far.

Water is a far superior heat sink to air. If not, I'll purge all the coolant from my car's engine.....:D

i dont think that water cooling is verry good in pc. you cant have enough water to cool everything. the hot water will pass bye the components and wont cool them down. air cooling is allways fresh cool air. so i think its much better.
you should have a big tank of water to have good water cooling.

500 is more then enough. Even when you overclock. I was considering getting an X2 instead of the 4000+ San Deigo, but I decided against, for some unknown to me reason. BTW I like your HDD choice :D

What do you guys think about this rig, Its just in planning stage and im not really interested in Raptors yet.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
DFI LanParty UT RDX200
pqi TURBO 2GB (2 x 1GB)
ATI Radeon X1900 ?
Radeon X1900XTX ?
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 (250GB) X 2
Plextor SATA DVD+\-RW
Ultra X2 Connect
Thermaltake Tai Chi
The video cards have question marks by them cuz im a noob at multi GPU systems. (yes i know they have to be crossfire ready and crossfire edition) i would like to know if they would work for a Crossfire system or not and if not what ones would for the best effect. and the Tai Chi will have the liquid cooling system with it.

I think that there should be two different ratings:
Overall rating - this would be comparing the person's PC to THE BEST possible PC that money can buy.
Real Gaming World rating - how well the person's PC can run today's games (with 1 meaning minimum settings and 10 being everything maxed, including at LEAST 1280x1024 resolution and max AA/AF).
Lets face it: I bet the number of people on the Steam forums with a "10" overall rated computer could be counted on 1 hand (if not less). I could personally care less how much my $1000 comp compares to some $15,000 computer that only a handful of people could afford (not to mention that it's not even reasonable for someone in their right mind to spend that much on a computer); I'm much more concered about how well my computer runs with today's games.
Just a suggestion!
For example, I would rate thugrican's PC:
Overall - 7.5
RGW - 8.5

Yes, it will run today's games without a sweat. It blows my PC away.
My PC specs?
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton Core 2.08GHz
1GB (2x512, Dual Channel) PC3200 Corsair RAM
eVGA 6600GT
Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU
At 1024x768, it'll run any game I throw at it with mostly high settings. Not a very good PC by some peoples' standards, but it's the first respectable gaming comp I've ever had. I love my old Barton core; she runs like a champ. In fact, my sister just got a media center PC with an AMD64 3500+ and 1GB RAM, but mine still loads stuff faster :D . By the way, this comp actually started out as the family comp with 512MB RAM and a Geforce 4MX :) .

Haha, you rate my comp higher than I do (I'd give it a 6 lol) :) . And I mentioned loading stuff faster than my sister because I was referring to non gaming applications, which surprised me. Her 64 3500+ should wipe the floor with my XP 2800+, but I guess the old dog can still get it done. Most people see that I dont have an AMD 64 and instantly think it's a piece of junk, but it really is the best running computer I've ever used.
Your comp will definately run stuff better than mine, so you shouldn't worry at all about it.

Yeah i hope :"( i spend 1,200 total ... Desktop , Monitor
spendin more for A VIdeo card and PSU 450W prolly gettin Corsair ram.. 1gb more to run BF2 with no freeze!
so it prolly be 2,000 that imma spend.
But i dunno why people spend like 4k+ on a PC.... i know why cuz some people waste $$ on those lights thingy that make ur PC kool with the lights... PLus a COOL case... and some has 4gb ram.
i wouldnt buy this lights and a case.
2gb ram is good enough.

I agree; you're getting a heck of a computer for 2 grand. My comp has cost a total of around 1 grand (the ~$700 price tag when it was new back in '03 and the ~$300 put into my PSU, RAM, and graphics card a few months ago).

well my desktop alone costed 699$ i got it cheap lol
but it really cost $860
but i put a 100$ warranty... 1 year+
so ya =\
I don need TV tuner but ohwell this PC is good anyway
I don have a TV in my Room... so ill watch it here wit my LCD Monitor.
Dual core is good just cuz i can run 2 games.... i do that and i don lag .. nuttin all i need is a video card and psu :(

what would be recommended for getting the best duel graphic cards to date? the Geforce 7900 GTX (512mb) in SLi or the ATi Raedon x1900xtx (512mb) in Crossfire? Cause I was trying to search for who has the better benchmarks and i didn't find any solid winner yet.

A lot of the benchmarks on sites like Anandtech and others say that SLi does better with the 7900GTXs in SLi. Take a read here:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2717&p=6
But i like ATI's image quality, so its really up to you. Id suggest the cheapest dualcard configuration you can come up with though, as SLi and Crossifre are both overrated. Single card is more worth it, but if you have the cash, SLi is great too.

*Sigh* People can spend as much as they want on a computer as they feel like. Some people like the ULTIMATE experience possible. No lagg. No hitching at all. Speed. That's why they spend so much. YOU may not want to spend more than $2K but thats just you. An $800 computer may play games, but not the best that they can be played, which is what people who have tons of money to spend on it want.
What's so special about a hard drive? It determines a fair amount of the loading speed in a game, and stores data. Standard hard drives are 7200 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) which is alright. There are drives from Western Digital that are 10000RPM, which means faster loading and faster file copying and everything else.
Whats so amazing about that particular $4500 HDD configuration? Each card is 15000RPM. That is SUPER FAST. Plus, there are four of them in RAID 0. That means even faster loading, copying, and speed.
And you wont be 'Fine' with just a good video card. You need a good motherboard, a good CPU, good and fair amount of RAM, good hard drives.....this is where you get into cost.

Forgot about this thread, had an upgrade for ages. About to get a new one (also with this post):
- Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHZ Extreme Edition
- MSI Neo Intel 875P Motherboard
- ATI X850XT PE AGP 256MB
- 2GB PC3200 DDR RAM (4x 512MB, dual channel enabled)

My new upgrade (coming in a couple of days) will change the CPU, motherboard and graphics card to the following:
- AMD FX-55 ClawHammer @ 2.6GHZ

Anyone want to rate both of them for me please?
