Ok, I'll whip out my comp real quick and check lol. Edit later.

Edit: OCZ Gold Series, 3x2GB. Latency is 8-8-8, and default voltage is 1.65v. I left everything at default for now, until I get an open desk. Right now, the computer basically is sitting in a little sauna room inside the desk haha.

P.S. I lied, it took me 50 minutes for the swap today. LOL Everything went smooth though. I did have to reinstall the RealTek drivers and the intel storage drivers. The rest was just setting up the BIOS. No biggie! REALLY glad this is over.

Yeah I'll be glad when it is to be honest. I spoke to ebuyer who informed me that I can return it at the moment because I'm within 10 days of buying it, but after that It's up to ASUS for the returns. I really want to build a new case up - which I'll buy as the same time as the new MOBO so I can swap everything out, I might add an SSD later on as well.

So fingers crossed ASUS will be offering the same service to us UK folk. I can't help but think we will be shafted again though and have to send it back before receiving a new one.

Cool. I use the V8 (http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l196/Lalsow/DSC00867.jpg), they're monster's aren't they! lol

I'd give your build a 7.5, as I know there are higher performance parts out there, but it's still a way above average PC. Nice.

I plan on sleeving my PSU soon. So far I have my dream PC :DThis is one powerful rig, only two things rankles me:
PSU - running a rig like yours with a 750W PSU seems a tad.....underwhelming, I'd have an 850W Seasonic/Corsair/SilverStone at the very least. Also, you're running 2x HD6970 in CFX mode and you're not doing EyeFinity?

You would have scored a perfect 10 if it weren't for this two misses (IMHO anyway), I'd give yours a 9.5....:)

Thank you.

I pretty much understand and respect your opinions, I'll give you my reasons:

1. For the PSU, I decided 750w was more than enough to power my i7 @ 5Ghz and my x2 HD6970's all @ LOAD. I have a Kill-a-Watt meter, and my PC's Wattage is around 580W with CPU + x2 GPU's being stressed (Prime 95 on blend + Furmark on both cards). So yeah, and that includes an OC on both cards of 950/1450 (Coming from 880/1375).

This PSU is more than enough! No need to spend more money on a 850W psu when my consumption is never above 600W. And games don't usually stress the CPU at all, so it's never above 450W while gaming... :)

2. I agree with the Monitor, but I've tried Eye-Finity already and I did not enjoy it at all. And hey, I am saving enough money for a Dell U3011 @ 2560x1600! I am not rich, so I couldn't buy it all at once, else I would already have this Dell monitor :D

Hope you understand :P And thanks for the 9.5 rating!

Cost me about $1200 altogether, started in December of 2010 (added second 6870 in February, second HDD in January)

Before anyone mentions how its such a mish-mash: When I first made this rig, I only had the one 6870 and a single 1TB HDD, and had vague plans to Crossfire 'down the road'. Of course, I am a horribly impulsive buyer and have Slickdeals.net bookmarked (a terrible combination, let me tell you), so I ended up getting another 6870 when it was on sale from Amazon for ~$180, and the second HDD when it was down to something like $45 (my primary was getting filled much more quickly than I anticipated).

It hurts because right now XFX reference 6870s are down to $160 after rebate thanks to a sale on Newegg... the Sapphire 6870 obviously outperforms the XFX one, but I could have saved money and had a consistent build besides...

6/10 maybe
Proc is not bad, but clock speed is pretty low so single threaded stuff will suffer badly, can you OC that to 3-3.4ghz?
GPU is pretty weak and out dated
And not enough info on memory or other components...

Its gonna start showing its age pretty soon here...

7/10. Sensible build, except that RAID0 for the OS is a mistake, especially over 3 drives. You have multiple 5850 cards, then?

7/10. Sensible build, except that RAID0 for the OS is a mistake, especially over 3 drives. You have multiple 5850 cards, then?

MikeBlaszczak, what's in you're rig today? Do you have a work computer and a home computer or is the one you use at home at work?

I've been meaning to switch it to raid 5, I am just too lazy to do it. Yes, that is 2 5850s.

It was only a couple weeks ago that I even got those drives and it was the first raid I've ever done. The 1tb drive I have on the side was supposed to be used for a linux install, but I have yet to successfully install one. I suppose that's another project for this weekend.

Maybe not. All my sensitive data is backed up. What's there is essentially worth nothing to me otherwise. In that case, why would I care about anything other than raid0?

That's a lot of home computers. What do you do with 6 computers at home?

At home, my main rig is my main rig: software development, gaming. I posted the specs for that one (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8747382&postcount=2370) when I was building it a couple years ago. I think I've added a little more disk and updated the video card, but I'd have to double-check.

Another machine is for email and surfing while the main rig is too busy. Home finance, whatever other paps that need to be stable while I'm breaking the development machine.

Two machines are servers. They're a pair of domain controllers, one has a ton of disk for use as a file server.

The oldest machine is a database server; tons of disk, not much CPU.

The sixth machine is a Linux box that's kind of a server, but mostly for futzing with Linux.

I first purchased the basic components in fall 2009. Since then, I’ve added a Geforce GTX 580, 6 more GB's of RAM, and an SSD. I'll probably add a larger 120GB Intel SSD later on, placing my 40GB into my laptop.

From that post it seems so...Actually, I ended up with a GTX 275. It's still in there. Works fine for me; I'm not much of a gamer. Oh, I thought that by "update" of the GPU you meant a newer model. Going from GTX 280 to a GTX 275 is the opposite but enough for those games. Anyway, you should get at least some DX11 GPU and work in getting DX11 in source. It should look hot.

Actually, I had picked a GTX 280 for the build initially. I ended up buying a GTX 275 instead, at the time of the build. I haven't upgraded since. I've been thinking about a GTX 570, but I don't think it's worth it as I'm happy with my existing frame rates.

At work, I have a GTX 580 -- but I practically never game, even here.

It depends on your budget, but frankly speaking, any 20-22" 1680x1050 or 1600x900 monitor from respectable manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP) with 5ms or lower response time and a good warranty will fit you perfectly IMO. You can even get larger 1920x1080 panel, just don't expect to run every game maxed out with single 6870 at that resolution.

Go with a 1080 16/9 res monitor. 1050 16/10 res is below true HD standards and will result in blacklines at the top and bottom of most true HD (1080P) videos!

OK! The specs you listed are usually common with most HP/Compaq systems (cookie cutter systems), excluding the video card... That is all. Not many people choose 3Gs of ram. Usually 2, 4, 8, 12, Etc...

Since, you built. It only gets a 9/10 score...

At that resolution you shouldnt have any problem at all running your games at max settings, especially Cod4,L4D games, ME2 and so forth. your CPU is one step above mine and theres absolutely no problems with it.

All the stuff I know off the top of my head.
Motherboard Gigabyte H55M-S2H
CPU Intel i5 (I know it's overclocked but I can't remember what it is overclocked to, dammit...)
RAM 8gb RAM
Graphics card MSI nVidia 1GB GT440
HD Seagate 1TB
OS Windows 7 Ultimate
PSU Ritmo Force 860 Gaming

22" flat screen, too by the way, it's amazing. <3
Built myself, by the way. Yes a chick built her own computer.
If you'd recommend I upgrade anything what would it be? Graphics card maybe?

Yes, a better graca will help.
Will give better performance that upgrading to the Sandy Bridge.
But for later, the mobo + cpu would be nice too.
For now absolutely the graca.

P.S. I lied, it took me 50 minutes for the swap today. LOL Everything went smooth though. I did have to reinstall the RealTek drivers and the intel storage drivers. The rest was just setting up the BIOS. No biggie! REALLY glad this is over.

I've just finished all mine as well G Sup! I had problems with the intel drivers and my sata drives wouldn't pick up but I've changed it to IDE and It's working fine now. I was without a pc for 3 days so not the end of the world. I just need to work on my cable management and tidy up my PC, might buy a SATA 6 HDD next month as well.

Built in December '09 it was my first full build. Everything is stock because I haven't had time to OC yet. I will likely OC this summer. I'm looking into getting an ssd, after that I would like to be able to double my ram and add a second 5850 with two more monitors (currently I have one 1680x1050 from NEC), but who knows when that will happen. ;)

Its a bit werid to say you overclocked a HD4860 to HD4890 when obviously they won't attain the same performance, even if they are at the same clocks. (since the HD4860 has 160 less SPUs)

I should have clarified more, it's OC'd to stock 4890 clocks.

I'd give it a 7/10. Persoanly I like the 1366 processor architecturebetter and the i7 960 isnt overly expensive3 at like 2-300 dollars. Also, you might want to add an SSD as an os hard drive, and maybe some more RAM.

I'm waiting on an OCZ 120 GB Vertex 3 SATA III SSD MAX IOPS..

Currently getting 140 average FPS in Battlefield Bad Company 2 (HIGH), will get another GTX580 for SLi, BF3.

- KDS 22" widescreen
- Logitech G15 keyboard
- Logitech MX Revolution mouse

cpu and motherboard are brand new, as well, gpu & psu are just a couple months old.
So I feel I'm getting there slowly as I go but not quite sure what to do next.
I'd like to get a different monitor. My current has served me quite well and I've never had a problem with it however, the native res is 1680x1050 and with my new stuff I'm thinking a monitor that will give me 1920x1200 at least.

The other thing I have in mind is should I get a newer/better/whatever card or do I keep the 460 and run dual?

I'd give a similar rating. RAID0 is dangerous and apparently misapplied in that build. 8 gigs is great; I haven't build a machine with less than eight gigs in the last four or five years, I think. Overclocking is trouble, though.

Do you think think the machine deserves a different rating? What is it? It would be great for you to participate in the thread beyond just abstract disagreement.

I'd give a similar rating. RAID0 is dangerous and apparently misapplied in that build.

im not too sure that most people are really bothered about loosing all of there data if a hdd fails. (most people who i know back up everything online or on seperate hdd's) i personally have RADI 0 and the only reason i did it was for simple storage (no messing about with seperate drives for storage etc) and the added benefit of faster transfer speeds.

i can see the downside of the increased failure rate but i dont think you should be rating people down for using RAID, its more of a personal preferance.

i can see the downside of the increased failure rate but i dont think you should be rating people down for using RAID, its more of a personal preferance.Aren't all aspects of a build mostly down to personal preference? Then, why bother seeking or offering ratings at all, in any case?

Indeed, some people back up. Most do not, and most don't realize any real increase from their application of RAID0, anyway. I use it when it's appropriate, but when spending just a bit more money helps assure more up-time, there are few times when it's really appropriate.

I have switched to console gaming for at least 7 years.
Last month I had the need for a new PC (after 7 long years). This is my first build, it is fairly capable of running the latest games. What do you think?
I am still a console gamer primarily. But there are a few upcoming PC games that I will definitely buy now. :p

New Build (April 2011):
Case: Coolermaster Sniper Black AMD Dragon Platform Edition
Mother board: ASUS P8P67 LE
CPU: i7 2600 3.4 Ghz (without the "k")
Video Card: Powercolor Radeon HD6850 775Mhz 1GB

Why did you go for a P67 board if you didn't get a "k" processor? That was a waste of money in my opinion. :(

The rest looks quite decent, enjoy it! :D

When I built this system, I want stability first then speed.
So I didn't buy the "k" processor even it's just $10 more. From Intel's web site, what the 2600 has that 2600k doesn't is Intel Trusted Execution Technology. I dunno what exactly it is but it sounds like the stability that I want.

Asus is my trusted brand. I dunno what other mother board I could get that is not a P67 (Asus nor not).
I got info from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGxMdwJ1Rjk
at frame 8:37 the Intel guy said the H67 board is for unlocking the video capability of the "k" processor and a video card is not need for H67 boards. Since I want a Radeon HD video card, I go with the P67 board.

Do you have time to send the 2600 back and get the 2600k?

The "K" version means it has an unlocked multiplier which means you could easily get it to +4.5Ghz if you wanted... While the "non-K" you can't really do any Overclock at all.

I'd honestly pay those extra $10, definitely worth it...!

Yeah I know about the unlocking. But overclocking is not what I want right from the start. Even my video card can be unlocked just by clicking a button but I choose not to do it.

This is my first build after all. I am glad it has given me zero problem / issue since I turned it on the first time. I rather have a slightly slower PC than headaches. May be the next PC I build I would do some overclocking like you have suggested.:)

You can't "unlocK" a 6850. I think you've mistaken it for the 6960 (6950's can be unlocked to 6970's).

What I meant is in the CCC, there is an option to "unlock" the GPU. And after doing that you would be able to overclock the GPU, control the fan speed.

The 6960 is way over my budget, I haven't research about it. So I am not sure what "unlocking" means with the 6960.

use it for cgi rendering gaming and video production. It's running Linux cause no offense windows memory management blows sorry it does also processor management bla bla bla. Try rendering computer graphics editing it all and compiling it all on a machine with 16 gigs of memory its bad really bad. Since the 48 gb of memory. Since i can count on 1 hand how many games i actually play on the pc wine under linux plays everything just fine for the downtime.

Likewise.

My specifications of Flash:

Intel i7 EE 965 (_only mess with the best_)
Asus Rampage II Extreme
12 gigabytes RAM [Corsair & G.Skill] @ 1333 meghertz
Gigabyte GTX 295 in SLI
1 Terabyte WD Black Edition
150 gigabytes WD Raptor
Logitech z-530 5.1 surround sound speakers
Samsung T240 LCD monitor
Windows Vista Ultimate x64
Lian-Li PC-X1000 (_only mess with the best_)
Thermaltake Tough Power 1200 Watt PSU

Used to be overclocked to 3.6 gigahertz and running ram @ 1866 mhz. Tested the beast on a 42/50 plasma with an expensive Audioquest hdmi cable, both ram modules running @ 1333/1866 megahertz to conclude that over-clocking is a real waste of expensive equipment  Realized that there is no significant difference but only color sharpness in games.
Everyone is better off acquiring a monitor with very high dynamic contrast ratio & excellent hdmi cable to truly enjoy 1080p gaming :)

I'm building this rig for a friend of mine, and I was just curious as to what you guys would rate it. It was an 800$ build that needed a monitor as well as an os, so let me know how you guys think I did!

AMD Athlon II x4 640 @3Ghz
Gigabyte GA-770T AM3 mobo
2x2gb G.SKILL F3 DDR3 1333Mhz RAM 1.5v cas 9
500W Corsair Builder Series PSU
Powercolor HD5670 1gb
Asus 21.5" monitor 1920x1080
Seagate Barracuda 1tb HDD
Azza Orion 201 mid tower case
Samsung DVD writer
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

All that for under 800$

And it's been a while since my rig has been rated, how well do you guys think it would be rated today?

AMD Phenom II 970 currently @ the stock 3.5Ghz + Zalman 9700 HS/F
Asus M3A79-T Deluxe AM2+ mobo
4gb Ocz Platinum RAM @ 1066Mhz
1gb XFX HD5870 XXX Edition 1000/1350
640gb WD Caviar Black + 1tb Seagate Barracuda
Thermaltake Toughpower 700W PSU
NZXT Apollo mid tower
Samsung Syncmaster 24" 1920x1080 + Acer 19" 1280x1024
Logitech G15+G5
Sony 540W Stereo system for cranking the music, Razer Megalodon's for kicking ♥♥♥ in games.

Just a question though, how come I hardly see people with Thermaltake PSU's in their systems? From all the reviews I've read they're great PSU's.

And are there any upgrades I should make to my computer?

Hello everyone! I just built a brand new gaming PC for around $1550 USD.

Here are the Specs:
ASUS Sabertooth P67 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-2600K LGA 1155 Processor - Overclocked to 4.6GHz
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 memory (8GB) - These were on special! only $105 for 8GB!!!:D
EVGA GTX 570 - Overclocked
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB Hard drive - wanted an SSD but they were really expensive.:( But saving up for one so soon I'll proably get an OCZ SSD (any reccomendations)?
SilverStone Raven 3 (RV03) case - god damn cool!:D
SilverStone ST85-P 850W PSU - I love this PSU - really good.
Samsung SH-S223 DVD Burner
Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit

It's all done and dusted 100% built. Cable management completed - to the point that no cable are visible at all. I mean if you looked inside you would think that it is completely unplugged.

So please rate - and give further upgrade options! Thanks everyone!!!:D

whats the CAS on the ram?
i was about to go Corsair myself until i saw that the G.Skill was more stable when overclocked.

i got myself 8gb of DDR3 1600 ram at CAS8 for $100. though the next day newegg had them as a shell shocker for $80, made me a little jarateed. was almost tempted to buy another two sticks.

[edit]
nice rig, i just upgraded my own rig, i got a different motherboard (P8Z68 pro) and am planning on getting the 560ti (570 was too much more for only a small preformance gain for me to warrant the upgrade) but other than that my rig is very similar.

i'd give your rig an 95% (A), your Mobo is slightly better than mine as it ignores the whole integrated graphics part and is aimed at just overclocking. i may be biased though as i think my rig is perfect ;)

This Vegenace RAM is meant to be overclocked. It's been super stable. Latency is: 9-9-9-24 - haha I bought Rift for $50 of Steam then the next day if was 33% off - it's always annoying when that happens!

Oh and Thanks!

if it's solely for gaming you could have gone for a 2500K and slipped in an SSD with the money saved...

but if you're actually going to make use of the 2600K's hyper threading, cool.

I'm not sure if you can hit 5+ GHz with the 212+, it depends on your room temp too I guess, but it's great bang for the buck.

Upgrades after an SSD? maybe SLI down the road if the 570 becomes not enough; and bigger, better and more monitors never hurt in my opinion ;)

It sounds like you got a great deal on the RAM.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's my understanding that Sandy Bridge CPUs don't require high MHz RAM for overclocking.

EdgeofSanity
05-27-2011, 01:09 AM
Yeah they don't but higher is better than lower - and they were cheap so it made sense for the higher MHz ram and you never know.

HJP

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's my understanding that Sandy Bridge CPUs don't require high MHz RAM for overclocking.

That is true, as Sandy Bridge overclocks using the multiplier, and not the BCLK meaning RAM isn't affected by overclocking the CPU. You can increase the BCLK slightly, but depending on your motherboard and CPU, the most you will get is maybe an extra 5MHz at most.

To OP, That's a pretty nice PC by the way. I would have gotten a larger HDD and an even better CPU cooler, but that's just nitpicking. :)

Forgot to rate it, as you asked. I'd say 9/10.

OP has a very good PC though, not much else to say when you can spend $1500 on a rig though.

I'm building this rig for a friend of mine, and I was just curious as to what you guys would rate it. It was an 800$ build that needed a monitor as well as an os, so let me know how you guys think I did!

AMD Athlon II x4 640 @3Ghz
Gigabyte GA-770T AM3 mobo
2x2gb G.SKILL F3 DDR3 1333Mhz RAM 1.5v cas 9
500W Corsair Builder Series PSU
Powercolor HD5670 1gb
Asus 21.5" monitor 1920x1080
Seagate Barracuda 1tb HDD
Azza Orion 201 mid tower case
Samsung DVD writer
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

All that for under 800$

And it's been a while since my rig has been rated, how well do you guys think it would be rated today?

AMD Phenom II 970 currently @ the stock 3.5Ghz + Zalman 9700 HS/F
Asus M3A79-T Deluxe AM2+ mobo
4gb Ocz Platinum RAM @ 1066Mhz
1gb XFX HD5870 XXX Edition 1000/1350
640gb WD Caviar Black + 1tb Seagate Barracuda
Thermaltake Toughpower 700W PSU
NZXT Apollo mid tower
Samsung Syncmaster 24" 1920x1080 + Acer 19" 1280x1024
Logitech G15+G5
Sony 540W Stereo system for cranking the music, Razer Megalodon's for kicking ♥♥♥ in games.

Just a question though, how come I hardly see people with Thermaltake PSU's in their systems? From all the reviews I've read they're great PSU's.

And are there any upgrades I should make to my computer?

Anyone care to rate these? :)

9.5/10.

You didn't get 10 cos you don't have a hex core, and don't have gtx 590. Having said that your rig would still destroy any game out there. Logitech peripherals and corsair PSU ftw!

Hmmm... I'm seeing his 2500K obliterating your CPU in physics test, which is purely CPU dependent. Also, he's combined score (balanced load between CPU and GPU) is much better than yours. See that big red stop sigh? Your CPU is bottlenecking your cards. Overclock it or get faster CPU. You are not harnessing the full power of 480 SLI. You should be within 15-20% of two GTX 580.

Your running SLI'd 480's.. of course it will beat my setup..

nvidia surround yes not 3d. I have 3 BenQ 24 LED G2420HDBL even if one screen decided to give up so it is on repair

Very, very nice then. 9.7/10. Loving the cooling extravaganza :) Btw, I assume you have 1.5GB versions of 580s. How's VRAM usage on 5760x1080? Do you get over 1.5GB often? Would you say 1.5GB enough for such massive resolution?

yes i have 1.5GB version but i havent checked my VRAM usage. But performance wise it working very well as long you don't use any AA when fps drops like a stone so. I guess Vram is maxing or more:)

Should I buy two hard drives for my computer? I see lots of computers set up that way here. Is only having one hard drive risky or something? Is it better to have the OS on a separate drive from your other stuff? If so, how big?

I have 2 drives due to my 500GB not being large enough. Many people get a SSD due to it being much faster so if you put an OS on to it it will load much faster and things installed onto it will be faster.

Cooling:

2 x EK 480 radiators with a total of 8 Phobya 120 mm fans in the bottom of the chassis.
1 st Phobya 140mm fan exhaust in the bottom, and a 96 mm Fractal which also sucks out the bottom of the chassis, the other takes in air from outside.

4 Phobya 120 mm fans on the ceiling as exploiters, and 1 x 120 mm Phobya as exploiters in the back.

1 x 140 mm Phobya inug to HDD part, helped by a 120 mm Phobya on the other side of the HDD rack.

Overall, is 18 fans =) Still, the computer is very quiet ....

GPU is cooled by the full cover of full cover Hetakiller maxes out around 60 degrees at 1:22 volts on the GPU.
. CPU cooled by EK Supreme HF maximizing maximum of about 60-65 degrees at 5.0 ghz and 1.40
Run a dualbay XSPC res dual loops, which each loop is driven by a Liang 18w, dead silent when they are suspended on rubber ...

One loop for the GPU and the CPU
pics will coming later today :)

I'll just rate this one. I haven't followed closely what kind of ratings people give here, but I'd say 8/10 for yours. We have a few mutual/similar components :D

Also, I'd love a U2311H, they're suppose to be great monitors.

As for mine:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.38GHz (stock is 2.33GHz, low-end motherboard won't boot at higher speeds) with a Cooler Master Hyper 212+
Motherboard: MSI P31 Neo
RAM: 2x 2GB Crucial DDR2 @ 816MHz 5-5-5-12 (stock is 800MHz 6-7-7-19)
GPU: ASUS GTX 460 1GB @ 800MHz core, 1600MHz stable, 2000MHz memory @ 1.0V (highest stable is 900/1700/2200 @ 1.062V
Display: LG Flatron L204WT - 20" @ 1680x1050
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB + Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB
Case: Cooler Master 690 II Lite
PSU: XFX 650W XXX Edition
Keyboard and mouse: Logitech Cordless Wave keyboard + Microsoft Sidewinder X5 mouse
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

There are several things I'd love to change in there, but cash prohibits that at the moment. :(
