View Full Version : Show your custom levels

Oki so here is the thread, so people can show off their own levels.

I'm going to try and get the image code to work in this forum.

So then you can post previews of them.

With forum user Sorimachi we are working on a website where you can upload your levels, download them, and rate them :)

Also I might do a section where the best mods will be.

So in the meantime if anyone wants to show their levels I would love to see them :)

We can just use megaupload in the meantime.

Until then, may I suggest just posting a link to a preview photo, along with the map itself?

LucBernard

yeah that's what we'll have to do on the forum in the meantime

Ok then. Here's my first (and quite short) level.

I call it Jump the Shark

Download (http://www.keepmyfile.com/download/0c19b22320086)

There's at least one tricky bit here and the level name gives a clue on what to do.

Remember that you need to rename the level etc to make it work ingame (added a readme file for instructions).

Also as a bonus, here's my creepy custom skins for Angel and Rose:

There is another way to add the levels into the game. You can simply edit the index.xml file and add the custom level at the beginning of the file (after the Chapter tag). Such as:

<Chapter title="Mother Nature">
<Map title="Jump the Shark" file="JumpTheShark.xml" diamonds="3" />
<Map title="Outside Orphanage" file="OutsideOrphanage.xml" diamonds="1" />
...

And so forth. Then you can select it as normal. It won't replace any of the levels, but as the chapter is limited to only 20 levels, the last level in the list won't be playable (in this case, Mother Nature).

To temporarily disable the added level, you can "remark" it out, thus:

<!--Map title="Jump the Shark" file="JumpTheShark.xml" diamonds="3" /-->

And then the orignal 20 levels will be playable.

Fun level by the way =)

I'm adding a "usermaps" option to the main menu at the moment.
On topic, I suggest people stick to 800x600 images at most, to be kind to those with small screens or low bandwidth.

I'm almost done with the first map of my planned two-map "series", but I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with a decent ending for it. Everything I draw for it on paper either looks really boring/lame or overly complicated and confusing. I'm tempted to just slap something together to be done with it, but I've put quite a bit of work into it up until this point and I'd hate to take the cheap way out.

When I was making levels I always ended them with one final push, a challenge. Go look at Forest Falls, Forest Cave, Crystal Climb etc. And then they have a small slab of piece at the end, so you can feel the relief of Angel doing his little dance in front of the pole.

Yup, post some here - that will actually also help me with a bit of internal testing before I put the code online too. I'm hoping ot have the initial version of the site ready within the next two weeks, of course I can't make any firm promises as you never know what may or may not happen in the meantime!

Also if anyone has any suggestions for what they'd want to see on such a site, please PM me and I'll take them into consideration (no promises though!)

My suggestion would be to link it to the http://ec.silverspherestudios.com/ site, I think this is where people expect to see a service such as this.

Currently there are two "Eternity's child" logos, maybe one of them could be replaced with "Custom PC levels" which would link to the new uploading site?

Ooh, you designed Forest Cave? The level I'm working on is a slight tribute to Forest Cave and Watch Your Step.

I think I had been trying too hard to come up with a decent ending, so I decided to take a break and play some Super Mario Bros 3. After finishing World 1, I sat down, started drawing again, came up with something that I really liked, and started building out the rough outline of it. Hopefully I can get it finished tonight, then I can spend the rest of my time testing and tweaking it until the new patch comes out.

I think I'm taking this too seriously. :P

I might put the best custom levels of the Steam version in the wiiware one also as part of a challenge mode. Because it seems that people are very creative.

you will probably end up with the user with the most maps on the community website we are creating haha :D

I'm a little sad. I had the level finished and I thought it was good, but then I played it for real a few times and it was way too hard. So many hard jumps between spinning blades. I thought the level design was great but had to make it easier, so this is version 2 which is still quite hard at times but it's certainly doable. Be sure to unpack the .png files into the misc folder.

Title: Platform Panic
Length: 7 to 8 minutes
Difficulty: Easy to Medium, depending on your skill level

Description: Angel "stumbles" into a cave while exploring, which leads to the outskirts of an abandoned amusement park. (The first map in a planned two-part set.)

Important Note: I know that this is a pain in the butt, but please restart the map if you die before reaching the checkpoint. Otherwise, the area right before the checkpoint gets messed up and it might not be possible to get past it. The map originally had three checkpoints, but the first two had to be removed for this reason.

---

Whew. I'm finally done. If anything has any feedback or notices something horribly broken, please let me know. I've been testing it almost nonstop, but sometimes it's hard to find problems when the creator is the only person testing.

It might take me a while to get the "sequel" to this out (which will probably be named "Carnival Chaos" or "Crystal Carnival", depending which level theme I use.) Making this one was pretty exhausting, so I'm going to take a break and play other peoples' levels for a while. :P

You do realize moving platforms reset themselves now?

Yup. Actually, that's what causes the problem. There's an area in the map where blades and platforms are moving along the same path (they're spaced apart, though. You'll know it when you see it). If you die, the platforms reset while the blades don't, so it's possible for the blades to end up overlapping the platforms.

EC + Photoshop = I hope Luc doesn't mind that I just destroyed his art.

I might make a full level in this style when I get done recoloring the trees and the forest platforms. I'll also have to figure out if it's possible to add new level themes. And how to activate the falling rose petals that are seen on the title screen. I've been making various guesses about how to add them and make them constantly fall, but none of my attempts have worked so far.

Bananacake
08-17-2008, 05:13 AM
AaronKI I already tried this and it didn't work.
it always said "incorrect" map theme when using the map editor. And it doesn't seem to be possible to change that. I tried all the .ini and .xml files I could find.

I think a "theme" is a folder, currently there are two themes crystal and forest. I made my own theme (, recolored forest, in a new folder) but it just wouldn't work with the map editor. I edited the .xml files and the .ini files but it would still say incorrect map theme.

And it's too much of a hazzle to have to replace .ini files (with configuration settings) just to be able to play one level.

AaronKI

It seems that we think alike. Or maybe removing all of the colors except for one is just a really obvious thing to do. Time to figure out a new level "hook".

Anyway.. after playing all of the custom levels currently available, I think I prefer the regular-style levels like Jump the Shark, Outskirts, Midnaight, Platform Panic and Memory. Bananacake's challenge levels are just too evil. :P

Actually, what you can do is replace the art like you do when you mod the characters. So you can release say a mario sprite mod, then release maps that are meant to play with those items. The user just needs to remember to save the original art and keep it somewhere.

I've no level of my own to post yet, but I've been playing some of these and was thinking it'd be great to have some way of showing which you'd completed - different colour level name or a little tick next to it or similar. Maybe even a little gem if you collect all the gems in the level! Just a thought.

I agree. Great suggestion. it could be something simple, the name of the level (in the menu) could be green if it has been completed. If you're able to collect all gems (if there are extras) the name could be blue.

The quickest way is just to right-click on the game in Steam.

I don't know about you guys, but the 'User Maps' menu option is on a different page to the rest of the menu and is quite easy to miss, although that might just be my resolution. If you manage to get Valve to release the update notes, it would help more people to see that the option has been added.
