Colleges and Universities Where Steam Does/Does Not Work

-Please continue contributing to this list by providing the following information:
-1) Name of school
-2) State where school is located
-3) Whether Steam works or doesn't work
-4) Specific location(s) within the school such as dorm room, library, etc.

99% of the list below assumes that you are using your own computer. There is no guarantee when using a university-owned machine!

- Now you will find a list of colleges or universities where Steam either does or does not work. The list is divided into two parts which deal more or less specifically with Steam’s online gaming capabilities:

The green list is composed of institutions where at least one part of the university gives Steam and online gaming the green light. There can be instances where only a small part is available for gaming.

The red list is composed of institutions where Steam has been fully blacklisted or severely impaired by slow connections. Also included in this list are universities where Steam can connect but no server can be found or where Steam and games work minimally/insignificantly. This also means if only offline mode works!

Hyperlinks: Almost all university names, parenthetical notations and forumite names are linked.

Aberystwyth now has an auto-disconnect policy on P2P networks, meaning that Steam automatically gets you kicked off the network for half an hour. Whilst the internet does eventually reconnect and SOME Steam functionality gets restores, anything that uses Steam's P2P network will get you kicked off the network again. Unable to browse servers with Steam’s built-in server browser?

There are a variety of server browsers (SB) that you can access using a regular internet browser (Firefox, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer):

To connect to a specific server, you will first have to enable the developer console (Courtesy Valve Support):
How do I enable the console?

1 Launch Steam and start the Valve game for which you wish to use the console
2 From the main menu select Options
3 Select the Keyboard tab
4 Click the Advanced button
5 Check the box next to Enable developer console (~)
6 Click Apply

Once the developer's console option is enabled you will be able to use the ~ key to open the developer's console and type in commands to change game settings.
You can change the console toggle key in the keyboard options, on the last line.

Once the console is opened you will need to write
“connect ”
without quotes and press enter. This will connect you to the server directly.

It's up there as confirmed not working. Well up until this weekend, that was true. The IT staff appear to have opened more ports or something, so it's working now in the halls of residence, and probably elsewhere on campus.
Requires an http authenticating proxy to be set up through IE, and then every time Steam opens, you need to click OK on the password box, but apart from that everything is working well.
Downloads are excellent, consistently >2MB/s. I've seen 8.2MB/s.

Bowling Green State University:
The campus runs a pretty hardcore packet shaper on their network. The results of which are while Steam and gaming through Steam is not outright blocked, any single individual has to share 1% of the total bandwidth with everyone else who isn't browsing the web on port 80. On Holiday weekends and other times when most everyone is gone you MIGHT get a decent game going, but most TF2 servers don't appreciate the 20-30 second latency you bring to the table. Playing ON campus, not sending your signals out to the internet, however, is possible.

To enable it you want to go somewhere with internet, make sure everything is fully updated (including the client and all your installed games) and then go "File" and hit "Go Offline..." Subsequently Steam should be able to start without internet and you should be able to play your games - SP and alone MP - without problems.

I'm not quite sure how Steam behaves when it's asked to go to offline mode but there *is* internet. I suppose you'll see. Good luck :)

To get it work for this Uni all you have to do is go into Internet Explorer (Because Steam use the IE browser) then Tools then LAN Settings then tick "use automatic configuration script" and use the proxy supplied by the Uni (not giving it out in case you not allowed to) and then steam will work perfectly.

I can confirm it allows you to buy and download games and play them online (game used for testing was HL2 Deathmatch)

I can confirm that the connection works well, heck when I was staying in halls last year I would always get the lowest ping award at my favourite server, which is way down south in Exeter.

I do miss my connection, at my current place (private student accommodation) it's 512k (real 10 MBps at halls) and it's firewalled so I can't launch Steam in online mode, Steam Friends and Achievement don't work ;(

Update to Aberystwyth University - I've managed to get it working, but the Firewall program doesn't allow enough firewall holes for all the ports that Steam requires. For basic functionality, you need to open all the UDP ports (this appears to be for things like downloading and Steam Community features). I'm trying to figure out which of the TCP ports I should open, but it takes 24 hours for the Firewall to update, so progress is slow

I looked it up in the FAQs (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711) and there's actually a bit more information than previously:

* UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive (Game client traffic)
* UDP 27015 to 27030 inclusive (Typically Matchmaking and HLTV)
* TCP 27020 to 27050 inclusive (Steam downloads)
I don't know how much that helps, if at all. I think that's as detailed as it's going to get publicly but you could ask Support directly to see if they have more information about this that could be helpful to you.

I'll see how I update the list tomorrow (what information I put up). I might wait for an update on this to post more concrete info.

San Jacinto College Central Campus - Pasadena,TX

EDIT: San Jacinto College Central Campus should now be moved to Green Light. I checked the wired internet in the Cyber-Cafe in the main building as well as the wired connection in the Lee Davis Library. The connection is at about 3MB down per second and all the proper ports for Steam are open. Steam opens, logs on without a hitch, downloads updates properly, games download just fine, and trailers on Steam work fine and load very quickly. I got on Team Fortress 2, Unreal Tournament 3 Black, Left 4 Dead, and Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. Server browsers worked perfect, servers could be connected to and played on, and connection is very fast. Note that the wireless connection mentioned below covers most of the campus and still is NOT Steam-friendly.

9/27/09 EDIT: Most (if not all) of the computer labs, the computer "pit"
in the Interactive Learning Center (ILC), and the ILC computer labs have computers with restricted user rights, so Steam cannot be installed ON THEM. However, the network connections they use (via Cat5) can be unplugged and then plugged into a laptop (etc) for the same effect as the Cyber-Cafe or Lee-Davis Library connections: completely GREEN LIGHT, Steam-friendly connection.

No dice here. I tried the wireless SJC-Guest, but not the wired connection yet. Steam hangs on checking for updates and never succeeds. I logged on to Steam in offline mode and then connected to the wireless, so I could try to connect to a server. I tried TF2 and HL2Deathmatch. Server browser showed nothing and trying to directly connect to a server via the console didn't work either. Audiosurf connects to get the news and Audiosurf Radio, but no access to scoreboards.

I have yet to find a steam game that does not work once installed
(I have most valve games and some others)
but steam downloads and updates either not at all, at about 10kb a second, or once every few months for about half an hour at full speed on the colleges 10mb/second connection (im guessing the college server is reset every so often or something), so even the smallest update usually takes hours to download.

In game downloads(custom maps, etc.) appear to get nearly the full connection speed.

I wanna make a few changes to Georgia State University:

I don't think it's possible to play in areas such as the library and various classrooms for 2 reasons:

Weak connection for gaming.
And they use this weird security. You automatically connect to the internet, but first you have to go through this webpage, where you have to log in with campus id and password, in order to actually use the internet. I doubt TF2 online will work.

And as for the commons, I've had some really bad ping. If I just open up my laptop after class, and play a few rounds of TF2, the ping will be fine. But if my lappy picks up a lil heat and the fan spins faster, I've hit 900.

The issue might be resolved by plugging in an ethernet cable, which are available in the commons as far as I know. Not sure about lofts and freshman housing.

Unfortunately Steam no longer works since it is blocked by the anti-virus software. No, it's all dorms (from what I've heard, I graduated a while ago) - a lot of group members are off-campus and/or alums, and it's also a new issue this school year.

do apologize about the issue you are having with the Steam Client. Our Network Engineers are aware of the issue and are working on the issue.
This is the information that we have so far.

Steam based gaming may not work on the network.

The manufacture Valve is unable to provide a list of servers to allow thru the firewall.

The steam client behaves like an infected system.

Based on the number of ports opened and the type of network activity.

This is effecting about .005% of the ip based system on campus.

We are exploring option and work arounds but based on the small percentage of users effected it may be a while before a work around is found.

I recommend removing the steam software from your system until a work around is found.

The client will continue to background poll randomly and cause additional internet blocking.

If you want us to send your ticket to the Network Engineering Group we will need the MAC address and IP address of your computer, the faceplate number that you are connected to, and your building and room number.

WORK-AROUND: Connect to the CaseGuest Wi-Fi. It is not monitored as much or something, becuase I can play TF2 all I want on there, using the server browser too. The pings are fine, generally between 30 and 50. My friends and I have been doing this for weeks this year and its been perfect the entire time.

Sidenote: Last year, I was in the freshmen dorms and everything worked fine on the wired connection (I could get pings of <10). The server browser problem started this year.

*This is only a problem for games that use the Steam server browser. Ex: TF2, CS:S, DoD:S, KF, RO, All HL1 based games, any Source mods. L4D uses matchmaking does not suffer from this problem.

An update on Case Western's status:

I've spoken with some of the IT people here and it seems that the problem is stemnming from a Steam update over the summer to make server browsing more efficient. The upshot is that when browsing the server list Steam breaks Case Western's firewall cap on connections (caps at 25000 or something).

This doesn't explain why my internet gets shut off even if I connect through console without ever opening the server browser.

Either way the situation does not look good as Case seems to have it on the backburner (i.e. they don't give a ♥♥♥♥) and are unwilling to change the firewall etc / find a way to add an exception.

Laval uni @ quebec works in the dorms at least. They don't block anything except (apparently) listen port for bittorrent. There's some fine print saying campus-wide wifi is for academic use only, but havent checked whether that's just legalese or if it's actually enforced.

I'm at Aberystwyth University, and as long as you request the used ports it works fine. Annoyingly though, individual games can take more ports than we are allowed to request (such as star trek online with it's crazy 200+ required ports).

Roger Williams University's IT guys say that they've opened all the necessary ports to run Steam, but "Steam uses 'undocumented ports'" that the school claims are impossible to predict. Therefor, Steam will only work SOME of the time, but 80% of the time it will not be able to connect to the internet.

-3) All games using the steamworks API for connections / server browser have trouble loading server lists and connecting to servers. I think they are doing some kind of flood control. Game purchases and downloads work fine, and once you have found and successfully connected to a server, the connection is fast and stable. Finding the desired server and getting connected can (sometimes) take over two dozen attempts.
-3? 4) My friends and I have only tried in residence halls using personal computers (not school-owned). All residence halls are affected. Steam works fine on the same computers while at home for breaks.

This has been the case since I arrived in fall 2007 and still persists today.

Note: University of Wyoming is currently in the green light list where it absolutely does not belong. The poster who reported steam works here was grievously mistaken.

Couldn't they just have a two-way open internet access (or some kind of big DMZ)?

I'm a student at the Paris Institute of Political Studies(Sciences Po), in Paris, France.

Steam seems to be blocked by the firewall, P2P connections are also blocked campus wide. Both in the campus in Paris, and the Campus in Poitiers.

On campus: the male dorms work, freshmen side is relatively faster
i assume the female dorms also work, and even if they dont i dont think many girls play games anyway xD

Pro-tip: The IT department were less than useless when I was staying at The Coppice - but the accommodation manager there was great and I battled the IT department through her. After a few months of complaining, the IT department miraculously dropped their heavy-handed proxy system, in favour of a more open system (Success!) The connection was still far from perfect, but was usable by the time I moved out. If you experience slowness or other problems - just speak with the accommodation manager.

5GB/day download/upload limit means you have to be careful buying games online, but the 100Mbit connection means >50ms ping to most good servers nationwide.

-3) Most games work, steam browser (e.g. store, news, friend profiles, forums in game) does not work, friends and other users' profile pictures don't load for some reason and neither do game thumbnails

The computers here at Naropa University will not connect to Steam. And yes, I am a current student here. The wireless network is pretty much the same infrastructure on all three campuses (Arapahoe, Nalanda and Paramita) but so far, I've only tested out Steam at Arapahoe.

Crap. I wanted to play Portal on my way to Denver today but it looks like that isn't going to happen.
