View Full Version : How CoH Works - Retail and Steam builds working together!

I decided to put this up here as I've noticed this question keeps coming back to these forums.

Company of Heroes is available both at retail and through Steam. At the moment there is both the original Company of Heroes and the stand alone expansion CoH: Opposing Fronts.

When you own CoH, you gain access to the first campaign as well as the original two factions for multiplayer. If you own the second, OF, you gain access to its two campaigns as well as its two factions for multiplayer. If you own both together, no matter which game you launch once you log into your Relic Online account you gain access to all 3 campaigns and all 4 factions in multiplayer.

Now as a Steam user, what does this mean for you? This means you can own either CoH retail and OF from Steam, or the other way around, and still play both. In fact, you can even delete your retail build. Both builds of the game contain the full content of the other even if you don't "own" it. It is just locked out with out the key.

For example I owned CoH retail and purchased OF on steam. Apon launching OF from the first time and registering my OF key with my Relic Online account it then unlocked all the CoH campaigns and factions in OF. I then deleted my original retail build. CoH shows up in steam as preloaded but not purchased (since I did not get it through Steam), however I just need to launch Opposing Fronts and everything is there.

So, if i get CoH:ToV retail, and own CoH retail and steam edition CoH:OF, how do I unlock all the content on ToV, since I never recieved any sort of key from steam for OF?

Yoshiro

You just need to register all keys with your Relic Online account. When you buy it off steam and go to create an account it auto fills in the key.

Ok another question. I want to buy TOV, but as i see after new patch my COH and OF, i see TOV campaigns r LOCKED in the main menu. so i want to buy TOV, but is there a way to not DOWNLOAD THE GAME but just entering serial number or registering my current COH name and it will UNLOCK upon game..is it possible?

U got my point? i presume that TOV is already integrated with latest patch to my COH,OF game..i see as LOCKED in the main menu. so i ask that is there a way to UNLOCK these with purchasing game but not DOWNLOADING it?

good question Bigtime. I would like to know the answer to that. I own only the retail CoH. I don't own OF and but I want to purchase ToV from steam. Does this mean I will download the entire game twice??? To be honest I would rather have the retail verson and just enter a steam serial number into it and have it unlocked.

Mr.Big - you will not need to redownload the game. You may need to download *some* extra files, though. Campaign unlock status is determined purely by your Relic Online account - as in, if you tied your CD key with your Relic Account, you will have access to those campaigns.

Six - to avoid redownloading, you will need to copy your retail install to the Steam install folder.

Wait what? When did Steam give me a CD key? Was it the thingy in the receipt? I've kept that, but it was kinda unclear what it was.

And would this work:

I have the original game installed, and OF, both retail. I'm now downloading ToV from Steam (as THQ figured it was a good idea to release the game on a date when there's holidays in Norway and no shops are open for several days! Wiii!! WIN!). When ToV is finished downloading, can I just launch it from steam and try to log into my already existing user and the game will automatically added? Or do I need to do something else?

Aerowinder

You have CoH and OF retail. You want ToV via Steam.

1. "Install" ToV via Steam - when the download starts, close Steam.
2. Copy your Company of Heroes/OF retail install to the new Steam ToV folder, or cut/paste.
3. Restart Steam.

If you patched your retail install to 2.501, you shouldn't have to download much if anything - there *may* be some sound files for you to download, like there was with OF. But it shouldn't be much. I would guess maybe 1GB maximum. I don't know that for sure. I do know however, that back in the day, if you had CoH retail, and had it patched, and you had OF on Steam, your retail copy of CoH would not play voices from the new armies.

In order to get the CD key from Steam, you must run the game from Steam. A stupid oversight on the developer's part, in my opinion. But it just won't fork it over until the game is done downloading. It is not accessible via right clicking the game, nor through the registry. Sometimes it makes you launch it.

I found my key in the registry actually. I'm gonna try to use it once my patch is finished. Well... Currently the ToV download on steam is winning the download race, but I'll figure it out I guess.

Well I would have bought it retail had the shops been open -.-

Aerowinder
04-09-2009, 02:43 PM
You don't have to use Steam, Six. The way you want to do it will likely work. But remember, if you are missing any sounds, that's likely why. I have not tried this method with ToV, only OF. I'm told that going from Steam OH to Steam ToV, 100MB needed to be downloaded.

Mr.Bigtime

In the User screen there is an option for ADD GAME...when u click on it it asks for a CD KEY..iam sure u enter TOV cd key and it unlocks it..u can buy from STEAM or IMPULSE or D2D or elsewhere..Account Screen and there ADD GAME or something like that.

So let me get this strait if I buy tales of valor the other two games will show up in my steam account as locked but when launching tales of valor and logging into relic my online account i will have access to all my COH content. Is there any way to hide the two locked games in my list. I really just dont want to see them there. I know that sound picky but hey my steam list is clean and I would like to keep it that way.

I also have a question.
Yesterday I bought CoH on Steam, but I'm also interested in OF. The Steam Store says that OF is only available in english, but I prefer to play games in german.
If I buy OF on Steam now, does the language of CoH vanilla automatically change in english or is there a language mix or something like that? It would be okay if only OF is english then, but I'm not sure^^

And if I understood the first post right, there would be no problem, if I bought OF retail in german? I could connect both versions and use the OF content in german with the Steam version?

Thanks for answers:)

I just purchased ToV via Steam this weekend. I have CoH and CoH OF retail copies.

I wanted to use my retail/relic account to play all the games:

Here is what I did to make it work:

1. Purchased ToV via Steam
2. Started the Download
3. Opened Regedit, navigated to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\Users\%user number%\cdkeys\
Look for the key 20540 and write down that CD-key (Looks like this:xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx)
4. Open Retail CoH, choose add product or click on the new campaigns, enter Cd-Key
5. Go back to steam and stop download and remove the game from your list.

This way you can play via Relic online anddon't have to download the game again. It would be nice if Steam just gave me the Cd-key after I purchased it.

Not sure this helps everyone, but worked great for me!

I've got "Company of Heroes" this weekend via Steam.
When I buy "Oppossing Fronts" in a store, I can add that key to my Relic-Online account and can play the "Oppossing Fronts" content using my Steam version of "Company of Heroes"?
Does this mean Steam downloads all the content of both addons and the main game, but it depends on your keys, which content you can access?

I'm asking because a friend of mine is now in Paris, but he got "Oppossing Fronts" as a gift from his host family. He doesn't like the game and would give me his "Oppossing Fronts" key, but can't give me the CDs at the moment because he'll be back in some months. Once I registered the key to my Relic-Online account, would I be able to play "Oppossing Fronts" with my Steam "Company of Heroes" or would I miss some content?

ok, so if i buy my friend a steam copy of CoH:OF and he owns the retail version of the original CoH what is the easiest way that he can get them to work without having to reinstall or download anything preferably? will he be able to get steams key for CoH:OF and login to his retail copy of CoH and then just add it in the add product? will this work because that would be easiest way for him rather than install steams version of the game and then copying the retails info over into steams files.

Don't hold me to this, but, I would assume that you would only have access to the new modes that were included with ToV (Blitzkrieg, Stonewall, Assault) and not access to the usual multiplayer mode (Annihilation/Victory Point).

What a mess this is and needs to be FIXED, I have CoH retail v2.600 installed, have CoH and CoH:OF bought trough steam, when i launch my CoH with steam closed i get a titel screen with the 3 CoH chapters playable 2 is locked guess cause i haven't completed the first, the 3 OF chapters is greyed out and locked and it says opposing fronts on the graphics, and when trying to dl OF from steam it stops on creating a cache, so all in all i must have used my steam OF key for my retail CoH account huh and now i cant dl OF trough steam for some reason so i guess i must look to p2p sources for OF.

Rubert:
CoH only had 1 campaign.
OF has 2; I don't know why it's greyed out.
The last 3 are Tales of Valor.

p.s. thanks viper I needed that to unlock ToV after getting the other 2 off of D2D :D

question: whenever I update coh through steam (the whole redownload bizniz that everyone loves) steam seems to be updating both the regular COH, OF and TOV at the same time. all three of these products in the steam launcher are showing as being updated. I paused COH and OF update to get the TOV one to use all the bandwith, and it was exactly 3 times the amount of what was previously split into OF, COH and TOV downloading at the same time.

Is steam really trying to download 3 x 3 full installs of these "game versions" for a 27 MB or is it just being erraticly displayed, or done this way to keep people from thinking they can play regular coh while OF or TOV is being updated

ilsignore
10-27-2009, 03:38 PM
@daniel_osen

I noticed this too! I think it is a bug in the Bandwidth Meter. Why? Because if you pause 2 of the downloads, the speed of the remaining one does not increase at all. So I think that there is actually just one download however many doppelgangers you are downloading, but that the Bandwidth Meter is confused and works off the rendered values.

Let me know if pausing one or two of the three does increase your own speed for the remaining ones, though, on your machine. That would be interesting.

Maybe slightly off-topic, but I want to know why Company of Heroes Gold edition on steam costs the EXACT same as if you buy CoH and OF separately......

Actually it is 1 cent more expensive.

Whats with that???

I have just bought ALL of the CoH series and all the games are added/downloaded to my steam.

when I try to play anything but CoH, CoH plays.

If I try and add a product a key is automatically added to the pop-up but it fails when I try it.

when I look up my account details under the multiplayer menus it shows only CoH being keyed for the account.

Where do I find the keys?

You have CoH and OF retail. You want ToV via Steam.

1. "Install" ToV via Steam - when the download starts, close Steam.
2. Copy your Company of Heroes/OF retail install to the new Steam ToV folder, or cut/paste.
3. Restart Steam.

If you patched your retail install to 2.501, you shouldn't have to download much if anything - there *may* be some sound files for you to download, like there was with OF. But it shouldn't be much. It is not accessible via right clicking the game, nor through the registry. Sometimes it makes you launch it.

I did this.

I unfortunately had much more to download, but it's fine.

Unfortunately, I have two problems.

I see "Company of Heroes" and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor" icons in Steam.

- For Company of Heroes, I can't start the game. I click on the icon, and it brings me on the purchase page. It is as if Steam doesn't recognize my retail version.

- For ToV, I click on the icon, and I see the news about the game etc. I press on "Play", the computer loads for a short time, and then nothing happens. The game doesn't load.

I've had all of these games before, and it worked fine at that time. But now that I've reinstalled everything, it's a mess. Can anyone help?

Great!
So if I buy ToV, I should copy my Retail version of CoH to the steamapps folder then add the new CDKey of ToV on the "add product" option, right? Or should I add the CDKey of CoH? Well, I will know what will happen when I buy ToV.

Ok, I need to know this, because of the stupid case my DVD is starting to crack from the inside to the outside and I don't know if it can resist another year or so.

OK, so, to my little understanding here, I own a retail copy of the original COH, but I only want the OF expansion from Steam, no ToV (at least not for now), so, if I buy it from Steam, login to my existing Relic account, all the content from the original will be installed (downloaded) along with content from OF?

Another question, does it work vice versa? The game is already patched to 2.601, having only the cd-key borrowed from Steam and using it for my existing install of the original retail version of COH, will the content for OF unlock with the cd-key?

For me, bought COH and OP on steam, COH didnt automatically insert my key, but i did that manually. picked up Tales of Valor, launched COH, clicked on my account, clicked on add game (or something similar) added Tales of Valor key, viola! everythings unlocked, no need to download anything. So i think as long as your key's legit, and ahve at least one version bought on steam, you can use the steam files for all 3 of em.

Much easier way of getting your serials:
In your steam games list, single click on the game.
On the right side of steam, on the game page, there are some links. Click CD key.

I had the retail CoH (which I got free with a graphics card)
Patched it to the latest version when I first got it.
Bought the 2 expansions on steam, got the serials, opened up my retail version, added the serials to my account and unlocked the new content.

I did not have to download the expansions.

Big sale on the COH series today so........ Already had COH and COH:OF Retail (not installed) but bought TOV for $7.49 thru STEAM. It downloaded COH and TOV together (really it's ALL the COH versions included). Ran the game, it automatically entered my TOV CD key into the CD key Box and ALL 3 games were AVAILABLE when I logged into my RELIC Online account. No problems! They really don't differentiate the 3 games in any way but show up in a list of all the campaigns from each game together. Just select which campaign you want to play. If you had any game saves backed up you could have copied them into the game folder and continued at any point also.

As far as I know, the patches include the expansions.

So if you have your game patched to the latest version, then you can buy ToV from steam, retrieve the serial WITHOUT downloading the game, and just enter that into the game to unlock the ToV content.

To patch your game to the latest version, Relic have provided torrents.
http://cohpatch.relic.com/
Obviously you'll be wanting the Italian language torrents, so patch to the latest version, buy ToV, add the serial to your account and you should be able to play in your language, no problem.

For those that have a retail copy of the original COH, and are getting the expansions from steam, all I had to do was (after the expansion downloaded) launch normal COH, then go to my account info and chose "add product" or whatever it's called. Then the key was already in there and I just had to hit accept.

Viper

just saying, but if you right click coh, coh: of or coh:tov. There's an option called "view game CD-Key", you can do that instead of going to the registry

Great instructions Viper.
Further to that I wanted to add some more info. If you want to keep your retail installation and install the steam product you bought simultaneously you can do that too.

In my case I owned COH and COH:OF. I bought ToV. After I chose to install it, acquired the cd key, loaded retail COH, added the key to my account. After logging in all 3 are available.

After the dl finished in Steam ToV is listed and COH is shown in yellow (inviting me to purchase it). If I load ToV from Steam and log in with my existing Relic account, I can also play all three games within steam. The load screen is just a frontend for all 3, so there's nothing to differentiate which you are loading aside from the availability of the games listed.

I guess the main benefits are just for single play - no cd needed any more, And for tracking your COH stats through Steam. Just another option. You could also remove whichever you want or don't want.

Hi ,

i just read the entire thread but i still want to ask this.

I have all retail version of the game.Used to play them without steam.
Yesterday i bought COH of steam.
I thought the OF and TOV might work with steam. So i entered my retail OF CD-Key and now it says i own COH Retail Beta along with ( steam )COH.
What does this mean ? Should i enter my TOV cd key on steam also ?
I have already started downloading COH.Should i stop this one and download the other one ?

Here is my story. I played a lot Company of Heroes Online, then I got unique opportunity to buy COH Gold version (coh + opposing fronts) for 5 $. But the point is when I bought ToV via steam for 5 $, I've got cd-key and entered it for gold version. So, now I have all three games for 10 $ :)
And what is more important, I can play all three games via steam, just launching ToV in steam.
to howhigh1337: shame on you ;)

So as long as I have a Relic On-line account with CoH on it already I can get OF and ToV on Steam, Launch via Steam and still have all the content available? Sounds good.

I wondered that myself, what would happen if I got CoH on Steam in addition to already having it retail... it would probably just tell you the key is already there, i would think.

A relic account is nothing to do with steam, so as long as the ToV, OF and vanilla are all attached tot he same relic account, it will be fine.

Mav, a Relic account has nothing to do with Steam, so if you log in to CoH via Steam with the account you made via the retail version, you will be using the same Relic account.

Ok, I had CoH retail, and today I have bought the two expansions (OF and ToV)in Steam. I have added these two keys to my Relic account in the game, and now I can access the ToV campaign, but the OF campaigns appear locked, and when I click it says that I don't have the files or something like that (my version is in Spanish :D )
What can I do to play the OF campaign?
Thanks!

I have it on word from Yoshiro that you can own just CoH on steam and as long as you have all the games on yyour relic account you can play all the campaigns. I'm testing it out now.
edit: To confirm - Only installing and owning the original Company of Heroes, I was able to access all campaigns and armies after logging into my Relic account that I created using the disc copies of CoH, OF, and ToV.

I own Company of heroes on steam after my retail copy died, however I had previously registered COH, OF and TOV on my Relic Account, which I now use.
The point is, steam wants to download a OF patch for the grand total of 1 megabyte, presumably because it is present on my computer. However the fact I don't own the game on steam prevents it from unpausing.
How can I download the update and/or remove it?

Open OF, clic the "lock" button, a CD key must appear, accept it and you have unlocked your campaings.
