General Graphics Issues

DirectX:
Ensure your update your DirectX!
Note: These links will take you to the web installer. A 300KB program which downloads the latest DirectX release from Microsoft.

Clip Capture
This feature records the last ~30 seconds of gameplay, as you run around in GTAIV, and has been attributed to a lot of different loading and FPS issues. Go into your options menu, move to the "Game" tab, then disable "Clip Capture".

Error Code RMN40
Cause: Windows XP SP3 required.
Solution: Please click here. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en)
Instructions: Simply download and install.
Warning: The download is over 300MB and the installation can take up to an hour. Be careful!
This issue can also occur in Vista / Win7 if you are running Steam in XP compatibility mode.

Social Club Login Failed
Cause: Rockstar.
Solution: No fix for this issue as of yet. Only possible workaround is the following,

1. Launch GTAIV
2. Click "forgot password"
3. Reset your password to anything you'd like (even the same password again)
4. Try logging in again

If this does not solve the issue, and if you're sure there are no firewall / antivirus issues, then there is nothing else that can fix the issue. I have personally tested the issue with dozens of people across the world running different setups and the issue remains constant with no real rhyme or reason.

The only other solution is to spam the login button dozens of times and eventually you may get lucky.

Error Code RMN40 (Windows Vista / Win7)

Solution: Simply log out of the Social Club before playing GTAIV. To sign out, click the "Log Out" button below your username int he Social Club window:

http://i34.tinypic.com/2ql7i80.jpg

Notes: If you wish to play multiplayer, simply minimize GTAIV, log into the the Social Club, then maximize GTAIV once more. Multiplayer will work just fine.

"RGSC.exe has encountered a problem..."
Cause: .NET Framework v3
Credit: Sapiens (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/member.php?u=63900)
Note: This fix is not confirmed, however if you are completely out of ideas at this point, this fix might be the ticket.
Solution:
I recently ran into this issue in Vista / Win7 Ultimate x64 and after a bit of troubleshooting managed to resolve it.

When I first install Vista / Win7 I open up the "Turn Windows features on or off" window in the Control Panel and uncheck everything, mainly because I don't want or need any of the extra features listed there.

One of those features is "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0".

After my last reinstall I disabled it, installed .NET 3.5 SP1, and everything worked fine... until GTA4. Apparently even with .NET 3.5 SP1 installed, RGSC will die if you've unchecked this feature. There are three components listed under it:

- Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation
- Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation
- XPS Viewer

Initially, checking the "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0" box will only select the XPS Viewer, which won't fix this problem. I enabled the WCF HTTP and Non-HTTP Activation entries (which subsequently enable the .NET Extensibility and Request Filtering features under Internet Information Services) and presto, RGSC stopped crashing.

Games for Windows Live Crash - Non English Users
Cause: Language settings.
Credit: MrBim (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/member.php?u=417174)
Solution: Finaly got GTA running!

My problem was that GFWL would crash on start up.

This had to do due to wrong language and country settings in the control panel of Vista / Win7 (regional and language settings)

I live in the Netherlands, but had everything set to US. Since I changed everything to Dutch, GFWL started to run.

The stupid thing however is that GFWL worked BEFORE I installed Steam & GTA IV. After the install it did not, unless I would change the country settings.

Thanks for all the effort!

Jelly / Wobbling Water
Cause: Selecting Performance / High Performance as the quality option in nVidia control panel.
Credit: CaptainDingo (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/member.php?u=429339)
Solution: Set nVidia control panel back to a minimum of "Quality".

Shadows Look Like Grainy Sand
Cause: -
Solution: There is none. This is how the shadows are supposed to look in GTAIV. However if you can't stand the shadows at all, tap the letter "P" while in game to enable the blur filter. This can substantially soften the shadows.

The Graphics Settings of GTAIV

Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.

Graphics settings are limited by system resources by default. 256MB video cards force minimum settings by default. If a user bypasses these safety measures using command line arguments and exceeds their system resources, the users gaming experience may be compromised.

Video Mode
Resolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory.

Texture Quality
Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users.

Render Quality
Render quality is the texture filter quality used on most things in the world rendering. Most people would know this as anisotropic filtering. Medium settings are recommended for most users and will provide filtering beyond what the console versions can execute.

View Distance
View distance scales the distance in which different objects in the world such as building and cars are seen. Raising this option increases the distance in which high quality objects must be loaded and will increase the memory it requires. Restrictions are established to ensure the game runs optimally for most users. A setting of 22 or more will provide PC users an enhanced experience over the console versions.

Detail Distance
Detail distance scales aspects of the environment that the View Distance setting does not including vegetation, trash and other moveable objects. A setting of 10 would be the equivalent to the performance on a console. This setting has little effect on memory.

Vehicle Density
Vehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance

Shadow Density
Shadow Density controls the number of shadows generated for positional lights in exterior environments. These shadows are exclusive to the PC version and can have a major impact on CPU and GPU performance.

Crossfire/SLI
With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2)
SLI is currently unsupported. Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver.

Background Processes
Certain background processes can have a detrimental effect on system performance when playing GTA IV, especially on systems with minimum required system memory. Users should ensure they disable their Virus scans when running the game to maximize performance.

The game wasn't starting for me, a back dos box would pop up and then it would close a few seconds later. I finally figured out a way to fix it after reinstalling DirectX, all the Net libraries etc.

Turns out I was forgetting to log into Windows Live games, click "start > all programs > microsoft games for windows - live > games for windows - live" and log into your account.

Worked for me after all that, i probably spent a good 3 hours troubleshooting for it. T_T Hope this helps someone else with my issue, unless I was the only idiot who couldn't figure it out haha.

It gives no errors at all.

I fixed this one by downloading and installing .NET Framework 3.5 + .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. You can get them on microsoft's website. I think it's also under the game's folder like: .../Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/grand theft auto iv/installers/

But I tried running that install and it gave me an error, so I just downloaded it from microsoft.

After this I got that error where you need to logout of RockStar Games Social Club.

Then I could play "just fine" (excluding the bugs and the exagerated graphic requirements).

Hope I helped! :)

im having the texture problem as well, and ive tried every single fix exactly the way they said to do. but after about 15 min of play. the textures start to dissapear then gets unplayable very fast, but i have yet to have this problem in multiplayer. this leads me to belive that there is some sort of memory leak as in multiplayer everytime you die it reloads the area you spawn in.

ive also noticed when i alt tabbed out of the game when the textures are dropping out, my task manager shows the gta4 executable as only using 15,356k of memory, and that cant be right. im going to run dual monitors and have task manager running on the secound monitor to see if it does that constantly.

Even after setting it to minimum settings, it was still choppy and slow!? Maybe its due to the fact that im using outdated nvidia drivers! But my main problem is that when I tried to go to bed and save the game, I got a RESC10 error! Any explanation for that?

I bought a retail copy but I thought I'd share how I got GTA running. Updating drivers via the super clean update methods did not do the trick.

I had used RivaTuner ages ago to slightly overclock my 8800GTX and to raise the fan speed, but I've been running at stock settings for a long time. Once I made RivaTuner "reset all driver" settings and rebooted my system, THAT did it.

This fix was suggested in gtaforums, summarized by fflaguna.

Note: I'm been gaming on my dev system and I already had .Net 3.5 installed. I don't know if that would have made a difference.

GTA IV PC – Performance Tuners

Users Running 3rd Party Graphics Performance Tuners

There has been a reported issue of textures not loading in. If you are experiencing visuals that resemble the third party graphical performance tuners. screenshot below it may be associated with

We recommend that users follow the steps below to resolve this:

Step 1) Go to “Add and Remove Programs” within the Control Panel. Scroll through the list of installed programs and look for any third-party driver performance tuners that may have been installed previously.

Step 1a) If you find any of these performance tuners open the application and reset driver values back to default. This is very important! Do not uninstall this program before you revert the changed values.

Step 1b) Now close the program and uninstall it.

Step 2) Go to “Add and Remove Programs” within the Control Panel. Scroll down the list of programs and remove any program with NVIDIA or ATI in the name.

Step 3) Reboot your machine.

Step 4) Download and install the latest drivers for your graphics card from one of the following locations: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us or http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html and save them to your computer.

Step 5) Run GTA IV

If your textures are still not loading in then you may have residual files from uninstalled drivers left on your machine. In order to fix the former, we recommend that you take the following steps:

Step 1) Find a reputable tool that is known to clean files leftover from driver tuners. You can search for these on the Internet.

Step 2) Uninstall your display drivers again.

Step 3) Reboot your machine. While booting up, hold F8 until prompted with Windows Advanced Options menu. Choose to enter Safe Mode. (Newer computers may require you to press F8 multiple times before being prompted).

Step 4) Once in Safe Mode, setup the program found in Step 1 to search for display drivers. Run the appropriate cleaning option. Reopen the tool and make sure that no other display driver files are found.

Step 5) Install the latest drivers that you downloaded earlier.

Step 6) Reboot your machine and load Windows up normally.

Step 7) Play Grand Theft Auto IV.

I installed 180.48, 180.60, and 180.70 and all of them cause unplayable stuttering in l4d and graphical problems in fallout3. Using 178.28 at the moment. I'm too tired to look for fallout3 180.xx driver problems but they DO break these the game as well.

Hi @ all the same problem,

i spend hours downloading the game installing windows live social club framenetwork service packs..............

and the result is rockstar want that i, instal the game again, because the program cant find the instalation

Thing is, sometimes I can get it to run by installing .NET 3.5 SP1, but after playing if I try to play again IT WOULD FAIL AGAIN!

Sometimes If I uninstall completely .NET Framework and install it again it works again, but this is a cumbersome process and doesn't always work...

RESC10 is, in the GTA IV error codes doc, "Out of video memory - Please re-boot your system"

Go here for most of the error codes. (http://www.rockstargames.com/support/gta4pc/docs/GTA%20IV%20Error%20Codes.doc)

Yes, i know. Found the error-list quickly after some googling.
But i would say i have a decent amount of Video memory, 2 cards with 896MB. I know in SLi/Crossfire 896MB+896MB = 896MB.
So there seems so be a glitch when GTA4 is trying to read my memory size and just assumes it so be 0MB or something. The game does'nt start, it just crashes after 4seconds in the first copyright screen.

Only error I get every time the menu loads up is this...

Error #2044: Unhandled IOErrorEvent:. text=Error #2036: Load Never Completed.

It just minimizes GTA and asks me if I want to continue or dismiss, I have to click dismiss. It's something to do with Adobe Flash, which I have installed and should be just fine.

I have found a solution to the multiplayer problem if your game crashes when connected to social club. Simply alt tab out of the game and log in to social club after the game has started and it works fine!

Latest ATI-drivers (8.11) also made the game playable with my 3870x2.

Cause: Windows XP SP3 required.
Solution: Please click here.
Instructions: Simply download and install.
Warning: The download is over 300MB and the installation can take up to an hour. Be careful!
This issue can also occur in Vista if you are running Steam in XP compatibility mode.

I get this error and I am running Vista64. You mention that this may occur if i were running steam in XP compatibility? How do I check this? It doeasnt appear in properties of steam and neither in the window.

Hm, i didn't notice that was even there. I suppose a mod edited my post with some new information.

To double check if you're running in compatibility mode, simply right click your Steam shortcut / exe, then click properties.

From there, navigate to the "Compatibility" tab and see if it's enabled.

Also, do you have UAC enabled or have you turned it off?

I bought the DVD version of GTA4PC. After installation, if I boot the computer with DVD 1 in the drive and try to launch the game, I get an error telling me the wrong disc is in the drive. If I pop the DVD and re-insert it, the game USUALLY launches.

I thought I read somewhere that GTA4PC wouldn't need the DVD in the drive after an online verification. Did I imagine that?

OK, try the following,

1) Right click the Steam shortcut
2) Properties
3) Click on "Open File Location"
4) Right click on the Steam.exe icon
5) Check compatibility

Also, try disabling UAC temporarily

1) Click start
2) Type the following into the search box: msconfig
3) Click the "Tools" tab
4) Click on "Disable UAC"
5) Click "Launch" on the lower right
6) Restart

Report back with your results.

Also note: UAC can easily be re-enabled once more after testing.

Cheers.

Hm, OK.

Well, can you manually navigate to your Steam folder?

If you don't know where your Steam folder is, simply do the following,

1) Open My Computer
2) Click the empty "Search" box in the top right corner
3) Type in: Steam.exe
4) Wait for a little while (depending how big your HDD(s) are)
5) Once it manages to find Steam.exe, right click it
6) Click "Open File Location"

That should take you to the Steam folder.

Side note: Disabling UAC forces every program to run with administrator privileges. Just wanted to make sure Steam wasn't having issues.

It signs me on locally in order to save my games but when I try to connect to multiplayer it says it cannot access games for windows live... saying I need to be signed in.

so that ss is a shot of my settings and it says it can't see my connection. So I tried direct connecting instead of using the router, port forwarding with the router, disabling all firewall programs, running gtalaunch as administrator and making sure my firmware is up to date.. and I know it is since the last version was out in 2006/2007. My router is listed as a compatible router w/Live... so if anyone can help, that'd be most appreciated.

Yesterday I posted some advice from Rockstar, and I noticed a funny comment about optimizers, but I didn't knew of an application that was able to reset all those values, anyway...

Credit goes to 'hwaescher', he noticed that RivaTuner allows you to do exactly that,

his post: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=762524

Excuse me if I repeat/rephrase some of its contents just to make this thread more complete, this was the missing piece for me, even if I did test many different driver versions and command lines, and cleaning tools, nothing worked until I did this...

Maybe JUST doing this will fix most problems without the need to reinstall drivers, who knows....

1.- Get Riva Tuner 2.2, even though you've never tweaked anything on your own, and install it.
2.- In Riva Tuner, go to the Main tab
3.- Look for the 'Driver Settings group'
4.- On the field 'Forceware Settings' (second row) click the arrow on the far right next to 'Customize'.
5.- There's an icon all the way on the right, looks like a 'broom' and if you hover the mouse over it a popup appears that reads, "Reset all driver settings to their default values", Click it!
6.- Accept on the dialog. 'Yes'
7.- Reboot!

Hope this works for many of you as well. :)

Hey all, I want to start off by saying THANK, YOU! All of you, seriously - Ramzy and all you other guys have shown more support and fixed more issues than the entire Customer Service Department at Rockstar. Honestly though, what in the fu**ing world were they thinking releasing this!? I pre-ordered and I have been looking forward to kicking ♥♥♥ on-line in Liberty on my 24" LCD but NO, this game out of all games in the world has to be as messed up as it is.

Well, now to my problem - I fixed all the "minor" issues using all the recommended solutions etc. and I can manage to run the game while being signed in to Social Club and GFWL and a huge disappointment is the fact that I can play Far Cry 2 on Ultra High with 4x Anti Alias with an average 40FPS and then there's GTA4 PC... But yeah, I'm sure the game looks a lot better with a higher viewing distance and better Texture/Rendering quality but the game won't let me change those settings due to my "limited" amount of 512MB Vram. My main problem as of now however is the fact that the game freezes, just out of the blue between 5-10 minutes of gameplay and the only way I get out of it is to fire up the Task Manager and kill the process. That just adds another disappointment, hours of troubleshooting just to get the damn thing to start up and then freeze, freeze, FREEEEZEEE!

My system specs:

Windows XP 32bit w/ SP3
ASUS P5N-E nForce 650i SLI Motherboard
Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz (Factory Clocked)
EVGA GeForce 9800GTX+ 512MB (Factory Clocked, no SLI)
2GB DDR2800 RAM (well 4GB but my motherboard fried a little...)

As of christmas I will have 8GB or DDR2800 RAM, Vista Ultimate 64bit, nForce 780i mobo, and another 9800GTX+.

Thanks in advance for any help,
-Kevin

I found some instructions in german how to run gta iv best on ati systems, so i'll try to translate:

GTA IV runs on my HD4870 x2 on 35-40 fps with the following settings:

Resolution: 1680x1050
Texure quality: HIGH
Render quality: MAXIMUM
Distance: 1 (i'll explain later why)
Detail: 100
Cars: 100
Shadows: 16

That's how you do it :

1. Install your original GTA IV and follow the instructions

2. Change to your GTA IV root directory and create a shortcut to the "LaunchGTAIV.exe" on your desktop !

3. Press the right mouse-button on your "LaunchGTAIV" shortcut -> properties -> at "target" add the following string:

-> -norestrictions -nomemrestrict -novblank

Ahter this it should look like that:

4. Be sure, you have NET.Framework 3.5 SP1 installed after installing NET.Framework 3.5 !!!^^
a) install click me (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=90&p=&SrcDisplayLang=de&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsoft.com%2fdownload%2 f7%2f0%2f3%2f703455ee-a747-4cc8-bd3e-98a615c3aedb%2fdotNetFx35setup.exe)

5. Be sure, you have ATI CATALYST 8.12 DRIVER installed !
You can get it here click me (http://download151.mediafire.com/7yzvatrdyieg/h1ytmgy40w3/vista32-64_8-561rc3-081201a-072643E_CAT-8-12.exe)

6. Reboot your pC after installing ATI drivers and NET.Framework!

7. After Reboot open Catylyst Control Center and open the advanced mode

8. Do the following settings at "3D":

Mipmap Detail Level : QUALITY
CATALYST A.I : ADVANCED

Now you have set up your video card optimally, go on with the Prime95 workaround (only neccessary when game crashes after the first license screen):

1. Download Prime 95 herunter -> Google^^

2. Start Prime95, always check "small FFTs" and click OK

3. Now open the LAUNCHGTAIV-shortcut you've created

4. Start the game without signing in at social club

5. Now start the game and enjoy seeing the main menu maybe for the first time ;) Now press ALT + TAB (minimize to desktop) and STOP PRIME95. Now you can return to the game.

6. In the main-menu press the HOME-button on your keyboard and sign in at windows live!

7. Open OPTIONS -> GRAPHIC -> set everything as i mentioned above.. (just your MAXIUM) exept the viewing range, turn it just to 1 BECAUSE...

...> You won't see a difference and the game will become much smoother!

With these settings i have a real good performance!!

please excuse my english: i neither know the english menus of the game nor speak english as my mother tounge ;)

By the way: I haven't tested this yet, but the author says it
worked great. So i thought, a english version might be useful.

Good guide, I'm sure it will help alot of people. I have made post about this and can't be the only one however I have the issue below:

The game starts fine I press start and loads those images then after about 5/6 images the game crashes with the following error in event viewer below.

Faulting application gtaiv.exe, version 1.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000b7a4.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Has anyone been able to fix this or knows what I can do to fix it?

I need help!!! I installed the game and when I clicked on it, it started downloading a lot of stuff so I said oh what the heck and I didnt really look at what I was dwnloading. This DL started when I clicked on the game on steam. I just tried downloading Windows XP service pack 3 and this dosnt work either.

The problem is that when I click on the game absolutely nothing happens. I restarted my comp many times and that dosnt work. The little steam box saying Now Playing GTA4 shows up for like a fraction of a second and then dissapears. Anyone have this problem? I reinstalled the game also. What should I do?

I am still getting the RESC10 crash. Again, Steam and Windows Experience have my VRAM reporting as doubling the minimum requirement. I might try a reformat in a week or two to see if that solves the problems, but I'd like to try to avoid that.

maybe is that problem:

Solution: Disable/Uninstall the D3DOverrider application.

This is my first post here so go easy on me if this has already been mentioned, but I had the "RGSC.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" problem trying to get GTA4 to run and I managed to fix it fairly easily, based on some of the suggestions for other issues.

In the end, all I had to do was install SP1 for .Net 3.5 and everything started working properly. I'm not saying it'll work for everyone, but it worked for me.

I have an HP DV9000 laptop and nVidia's website told me to go find drivers for my Go 7 series card from HP's website (yeah right -- if I want to reinstall the early 2007 drivers that came with this thing)

If you have a similar nVidia go laptop vid card, try searching Google for drivers for that card model #. updating my graphics drivers stopped the RESC10 crashes (game was crashing after loading start sequence after hitting START in game).

I just found something on gamespot that is related to my problem.
The technical support section of Rockstar's official site acknowledges a host of known issues. For instance, Rockstar tells gamers with Nvidia 7900 series cards that a driver issue is causing the game to not render anything in the distance, leading to functionally unplayable performance. According to Rockstar, "NVidia is working on releasing a new driver as soon as possible."
Source: http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6201971.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;1

EDIT:

GTA IV PC – 7900 Series Driver Issue

Nvidia 7900 Series

There is a bug in the current Nvidia Forceware drivers for 7900 series cards that keeps the game from rendering beyond the far plane as show in the image below. NVidia is working on♥releasing a new driver as soon as possible. Please contact♥NVidia support for more information, check out the GTA forums♥for♥current driver discussions,♥and check the Rockstar support page frequently for♥updates.♥

I've tried just about everything; cleaning the registry, updating the videodrivers, updating the .NET software, updating the Rock*SC software, restarting the PC, restarting steam, updating the C++ libraries, updating vista, starting the game without logging in to R*SC... everything now yields the same result; crash after the loading pictures... I initially had the problem where I'd hit play on the Social Club launcher, then the console/dos window would appear, but nothing else happened. The console window would disappear and that was it.

I managed to get it working the next day if I completely unplugged all my network cables forcing everyting to be in offline mode. Just logging out of everything didn't work.

A day later it started working just fine, and online, logged into everything, for seemingly no reason and I played for a few hours and launched it a few times during that day.

Now today, back to square one and it's just stopped working again for absolutely no reason on my part. Being on or offline with cables plugged in or not makes no difference. Just console window opens, closes, then nothing.

I saw others a few days ago with a similar issue - did anyone find a resolution?

Not sure if this has been posted yet, didn't feel like reading through all the pages.

Anyway, I found that disabling the clip saving feature in the options menu helped improve my frame rate a lot, especially when driving. That could be causing people's systems to lag since it takes extra processing power to record all that data. After I turned it off, I was getting a much steadier, less choppy frame rate even while driving super fast down the streets.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, didn't feel like reading through all the pages.

Anyway, I found that disabling the clip saving feature in the options menu helped improve my frame rate a lot, especially when driving. That could be causing people's systems to lag since it takes extra processing power to record all that data. After I turned it off, I was getting a much steadier, less choppy frame rate even while driving super fast down the streets.

not only that. also the "GTA4.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" error is gone after disabling the useless clip thingy.

and also no crashs anymore. thanks.

I've found disabling Crossfire helps performance, even though the latest beta drivers seem to support it.

I'm finding this to be true for most of the new games I'm playing.

To let Balaba and the others know:

Indeed, there are people who installed GTA IV without any problems!
One of them is me^^
And I've never had an error when trying to launch GTA IV while being logged in into the Social Club app :)

Here are my specs:
Win Vista SP1 (64 bits)
Intel Q6600 2.4ghz
nVidia 8800 GTX 768 mb
4 gb RAM
playing at 1680x1050 res

I've tried several drivers, downloaded the latest of: Windows SP, GFLW version, Visual C++, .NET Framework etc. I also used CCleaner and still, I get a piece of (constantly crashing)junk running at 10-40 fps on the lowest graphics.

Windows XP SP3 (32bit)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dualcore Processor 5000+ (2,6 ghz)
GeForce 8800 GTX (768 mb)
2 gb DDR2 RAM

Currently playing at 800x600.

Hello guys.
I get the texture problem.
My system specs:
Intel Core2Duo E4500 2.7ghz (tried 3ghz too)
2GB 667mhz kingston
Ati HD4850 (With the Catalyst 8.11 driver)
Ga-P35-DS3

Well, the problem is the same mentioned here, the textures when the game starts, are fine, then they starts to disappear slowly, and i can only see cars, light, some people, etc. When i Alt+Tab, the textures loads again. I've reinstaled the driver ( like this topic (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=762080) ) but the problem continues, i also tried to play in the lowest settings possible. So, any sollution, or only the 8.12 / patch will solve this problem ?

For anyone on Windows XP x64 who gets the "Grand Theft Auto IV has encountered a problem and needs to close" window when trying to export from the video editor: besides the Windows Media Encoder x64/32 you need to have the Windows Media Player 11(default on x64 is 10) installed which can be downloaded here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C6A4CECB-9CB2-42F7-8814-7CB5067EE958&displaylang=en

Thanks for this super helpful thread Ramzy! Saved me from a heartattack while trying to get this buggy baby running.

Btw, can't understand all the video-driver related FPS discussions. Can go from very low to mid graphic settings with almost no difference in fps. It's all choppy(22-30). Increasing cpu speed from 2,6gHz to 3 made the whole thing playable(25-40). 4850 512MB(Cat 8.11), Opteron 185@3gHz, 4GB RAM
Looks like it's all limited to cpu power/ram.

The "no textures" issue has something to do with ur resolution, the textures are pre-saved in ur videocard's ram memory, if u have low vram and u set ur settings to "high" ur card has not enough vram, so it will kick some textures out to make the game work.. thats how they get missing.. what to do? set ur graphix options BELOW the recommended, and u will have enough vram for all ur textures, same goes for resolution, smaller resolution = less vram use

Hi I was searching all of this thread to try and get it to work but then i just re-installed it and now it works ok. But when I was installing both times i got these error messages come up. I will try to upload them later but it's a CRC error saying that "file x does not match up with the setup's cab file. your disk may be corrupt." I had to ignore this twice but now i get to the "Bull in a China Shop" mission and I get the Zlib 20 error. I was just wondering if the two could be connected or if I need to send my game back.

Hey Ramzy thanks for this Post it has helped me out so far but i still am having trouble getting GTA to work. I had the problem with the RMNO 20 but ur solution to that worked, it then came up with another problem but that was sorted by downloading the .NET Framework v3.5 SP1. Now however it seems there is another problem with RGSC, vista simply says "RGSC has stopped working". This happens when i try to load up GTA, can you help me please?
If it helps my specs are:

Before this happened I had GFWL working with a "LIVE" account. That really depends on what your problem is.

Does the intro music play? If so then it's probably autodetect using an unsupported display resolution, use the command line options to get around this by forcing something like 800 x 600.

The intro music don't play.

That's strange because I was able to have a 1 hour session just after finishing install, but on second launch... black screen, althought i changed nothing in the options.

After that, I tried updating all the first-page stuff... still nothing

thanks for the resolution tip, i'll try that

Ok after reading these forums the last few days and trying many of the things suggested, I still can't get GTA running well even on the lowest settings possible. My game hasn't crashed or anything, and haven't had the texture problems since the first time I played after installing. It's just extremely laggy, especially during the cutscenes which is pathetic when I have the game set on the lowest resolution and other settings.
I have a retail copy of the game.
Playing on an Asus X55SV series notebook with
Vista 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 8300 @ 2.4 GHz
4GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 9500M GS

I am in no ways an expert with PCs, usually get my mate to help me with stuff. I've downloaded the Nvidia beta drivers for GTA but can't install them - 'The NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware' Is there anyway to install them on a notebook?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

For what it's worth, my software needed some updating - didn't have .NET 3.5, and my nVidia display drivers were old. Everything updated and seemed to be running well, but I haven't been able to get into my system via remote desktop anymore. After looking around a bunch, I found this which fixed it:

http://blogs.technet.com/brad_rutkowski/archive/2008/01/04/systemroot-system32-rdpdd-dll-failed-to-load.aspx

It's adding the following key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management]

"SessionImageSize"=dword:00000020

Where 00000020 is hex for 32

This increases the size of the "session image space". Granted, this doesn't affect GTA IV, but if you're like me, it's certainly a potential consequence of going out and updating your system so you can play GTA IV! Took me a while to find it, I hope this helps someone out. I had assumed (wrongly) it was a consequence of upgrading to XP SP3.

Ok guys, there we goes with an interesting info ... a guy said "place this in your game directory and it will work" for the "bug at launch" (ya'know, the black screen + the error msg of windows "encoutered a problem, must close" blabla stuff).

Try this, it worked fine for me, I was able to launch the game twice after that. There is 4 versions of the game, it was the no1 the good one for me, still, I tested all of them, with no result for the others than the habitual bug at launch.

Ok got mine working now, whoop whoop. Strangely after i installed the SP1 for vista 64bit, and the newest framework stuff from microsoft, it still had 1 problem, just that it would not load up the RGSC and thus i couldnt play.
Basically i think this worked for me through luck... but hey might work for you:
Just simply go to where u downloaded the GTA4 files on steamapps or somewhere like tht in /C drive, then just find the RGSC folder and launch it from there and tada, it works and im playing it now.

The only downside is i have to go to tht file directory each time to launch it cus for some reason a desktop shortcut wudnt allow it to open... but its a tiny inconvenience really.

Its a gr8 game to play, its just a shame rockstar cocked it up for so many of you :(

I hope this can help atleast 1 person, tho u probably have tried this already. Unless like me u just cudnt think str8 and look at the simple things cus u were too pi***d at R* lol...

Okey, my game and social club didn't launch until I installed the new .NET Framework 3 SP1 and it helped me, the game actually launched, social club worked. The game was slightly laggy but everyone has that I guess. I was very lucky.

Now when I just finished changing ATI driver into 8.12 the game wont launch anymore. What the hell is going on. Social club wont launch anymore, again!! I tried repairing .NET framework and reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.

Also I just realized I have 3 of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable; 2005, 2005 (x64), and 2008 (x64). I was wondering If I really need them all? Can I just keep the newest one instead of all 3?

Have to say props for this thread. Not sure exactly what aspect did the magic bean, but the game runs far better now than previously. ATI shadows are still screwy, but I hope that gets corrected elsewhere.

Able to play at 1400 res, along with 30 on each setting.

Desktop
Intel 2.13
ATI 1950 (crossfire)
4GB
Vista 32

Laptop
Intel 2.5
Nvidia 9700
4GB
Vista 64

It ran far better on the laptop anyways, but adding the .net framework helped that one greatly as well. I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but I've been driving around like nuts and even cheated a copter in to fly into the city (the reason I bought this game to be sadly honest). :)

Turning off clipping made a huge diff for me as well. Hopefully in their first patch, they auto-disable that.

Only 2 issues I have left:
- I want to use my Cyborg gamepad
- Graphics settings do not save, have to reset each time.

Hey all, been searching around only slightly and cannot locate a clear answer. I purchased GTA IV and it is downloading right now... Do I need Social Club? GFWindows Live? Will they actually appear in steam in the tools tab or something? Will my steam version guide me through the process? I read the get it running thread, just a quick breeze through, skimming really... But, basically, will I have all I need when I finish downloading (save for possible other issues, of course...) or what?

Sweet, I posted a reply to this topic. Convenient.

Ramzy
12-11-2008, 08:42 PM
The social club is an external application which launches as soon as you attempt to open GTAIV, whether through Steam or another shortcut.

Games for Windows Live is an overlay -- Only displayed from within GTAIV. It gives you access to a friends list, game invites, chat, among other things. It's basically like XBOX Live.

You don't need to do anything special to have access to either. Simply open your game.

Hope that helps, Brian.

Brian.
12-11-2008, 08:45 PM
It does Ramzy, Thank You.

I was just looking to see what has come down the line so far and saw the installers folder etc, but irregardless of that, it will all be tied in? No need to download any GFWL software? If that is true, thats awesome. I was hoping I could just stay steam loyal at least a little longer in some way heh.

But, I will need accounts for all of these won't I? I will be prompted? CHeers!

Ramzy
12-11-2008, 08:48 PM
In some cases an update of GFWL is necessary to get things running smoothly. The link can be found in my main post, in the GTAIV checklist.

As for the accounts, yes, it's extremely, extremely annoying.
- Rockstar Social Club account registration / login
- Games for Windows Live registration / login (registration process is very long)
- Link R*SC account to GFWL account and activate via email links

Brian.
12-11-2008, 08:58 PM
I dont want to flood out the topic, but also don't want to deprive anyone who comes on that same thought patterns I did so I won't PM, but just to be clear: That means that I do have to download and install GFWL (if it needs an update, I supposed I'll opt to grab the one right off of the site if-->)? I saw a live redistributable package in the \common\IV folder called installers I mentioned, suppose I have all I need at the end until I come back to consult this glorious troubleshooting guide? Is it in that installers folder?

I really appreciate your help, I'm sure you know about GTAForums, but this guide cross posted, or even just link them to this to give Valve and this topic the extra love would help a lot of people.

Ramzy
12-11-2008, 09:08 PM
There are some cases where the "UPDATE" is necessary. You don't have to download the entire program yourself (GFWL). It comes pre-installed and ready to use from within GTAIV.

However sometimes there are complications, or the autoupdate fails to kick in. So giving it a quick nudge helps.

Long story short: You don't really have to do anything, it's all there, ready for you to use.

Brian.

FINALLY found a fix to the Vista issue where the game dumps right after the GTA IV screen and gives you the "GTA IV has stopped working.." dump.

goto http://www.m3fe.com/content/xinput and download xinput9_1_0.zip - xinput9_1_0.dll, zipped extract to windows/system32 folder and the Rockstar Games/GTA IV folders.

Took me a week and a half of fighting with the game to figure this out, but at least now i can play it in Vista.

Does anyone know is there's a way to disable the dynamic sunlight thing?

I'm rolling (definitely not loling) with XP and after I was FINALLY able to download all the updates through Steam, Social Club and Games Live I finally have gotten rid of the 'no textures' problem. My PC is a few years old and I don't even have dual core CPUification but I can play the game. The action is a bit sloppy and I don't dare take it over 1024xwhatever resolution, but at least I can play it.
Find a MoBo that's compatible with my hardware, slap a quad core on that bi7ch and I feel like this game will be ready to ROCK!

I just got the solution!!

ERROR: "RGSC has stopped working and needs to close..."

SOLUTION:
If you have this error, update your social club!
Last updated one worked for me on XP!
(on Vista, even older versions works properly, but if you have problems, this update may definitely help)

But since, to update the social club, you need to have it running, and it is the Social club itself that makes you the error, I uploaded for you the updated version 1.130 !!

Just replace it upon your older Social club folder! and play! :)

DOWNLOAD Social Club 1.130 (http://www.2shared.com/file/4453777/4a096c5d/SocialClub1130byViSK.html)

Indeed it does, but if it's crashing at start, ppl must update by downloading the files.

i resolved this issue by downloading the drivers from a different location and turning off spybots SD resident when installing drivers. its some software which asks you if you want items to be added to your startup. appears to be working again. but for how long ?

NOPE!
I managed to get mine working on XP just because i have 2 operative systems on the same PC, social club updated on vista, then I copyed the entire folder from Vista to XP, and that's the first version that works! (1.130) previous ones crashed at the very start on XP without updateing.
So people that have just XP on their machines are still stuck with social club 1.000 as it comes from the installation DVDs!
You should include this to de solutions of "RGSC has encountered a problem ..." for XP users!
;)

P.S. Haveing Win XP32 and Vista Ultimate 64bit on the same machine (an Athlon 3800x2 2.0Ghz OC'd @ 2.7Ghz , 2GB RAM and an ATI 4850)
I experienced an avarange +5FPS on the old WinXP32!
So play GTA4 on XP if you can! ;)

Had this problem wich I described in this thread:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=768204

The "constant loading screen issue"
May also solve some problems that I have not experienced.

I have bought GTA IV from steam so I:
*did everything written in this thread

Did not fix my problem so I tried this:

Go into steam and my games, right click on gta iv and click on properties.
Go into "local files"-tab and click on "verify integrity of game cache.."
And then when it has finished (wich can take a while)
click on "defragment cache files"

Start GTA IV and voila!

my specs:
G.SKILL 2gb ram
Sapphire HD4850 (O/C gpu@ 690 MHz and memmory @ 1145 MHz)
AMD Athlon X2 5200+
Asus M2A-Vm (motherbord)

Ya the game runs like 30-40 fps on medium with most the things around 25 - 30 i dont remember exactly and shadows at 2

the game looks pretty good and runs great until the textures say goodbye, but that happens in single player after while :o
