I don't understand your selection. FEAR is only "scary" in the cutscenes, which render them less scary as you don't actually do anything. Bioshock is not that bad, especially when you can become invisible. Ravenholm is a joke. It is just a fun level to practice with the gravity gun, not scary at all.

FEAR doesn't have cutscenes, you must be referring to the occasional visions/hallucinations. In that respect I agree. FEAR is a fun game to play, but it doesn't scare me because the tone of it is so damn jarring. That's why I like Condemned (same developer), it really does feel like a horror game.
Dead Space has its moments, but I never lost any sleep from it. Doom 3 just sucked. Bioshock did have a few good scares, plus some amazing atmosphere, but I don't think that's enough to really put it on this list. Same with the Ravenholm scene in HL2.
I'm glad someone mentioned System Shock 2. That'd be a close second for me.

Ah....that is a game I completly forgot about. Although I do remember the game giving me chills at the time (the first Shivers did as well as I recall.)
Whenever I think of scary games, my mind instanly goes to the Silent Hill games. The first 3 ranged from creppy to downright disturbing. The best thing about them was the fact they utilized psychological fear. The 4th game had its moments but forgettable. The 5th appeared to be ruined (not as scary) by the decision to use an American company (I live in the U.S. but Japan is better at psychological fear IMO).
Other scary games include: Doom 3, Clocktower, the first resident evil.
Is it just me or was the "games of the past" scarier then many of the ones today. Many people are listing games from previous generations. It could be argued that pretty graphics don't make the game scary; atmosphere does. Alot of older games were much better at creating a good atmosphere.

I don't think so. Resident Evil had an amazing atmosphere and there was nothing like it at the time. I don't think that I would find it scary today since I played through the game sooooo many times that I know all of the scary scenes. I remember a friend and I playing it for the first time and was scared (and eventually excited) about the dogs jumping through the windows of the mansion during the begining.
I suppose that it could still be scary to someone who never experienced it before (like someone too young to remeber when it came out) but it may be hard to convince them to play it since the graphics are slightly outdated ;)
Great game anyhow

I was not impressed by Stalker SoC at first too.. But I got some mods for it (graphics mod, remove headbobbing, sound mod, etc) and I'm enjoying it a lot more. It picks up after an hour or two and you get hooked. (I just follow the main campaign, I don't bother with the extra side missions).
I'd have to say though, my first encounter in those labs were scary. You never expect such an enemy.. and the atmosphere is pretty good.
Fear was more chilling then scary. It started to repeat itself, and the scare factor started to diminish. Although encountering those invisible enemies was definitely a good moment.

My personal list consists of many games allready mentioned:
- Doom 3
- FEAR
- Dead Space
I would like to add that Doom 3 wasn't scary, but has it moments with opponents showing up on unexpected positions or moments. I find that a bit
easy because it's one off the few tricks Doom 3 does to make it scary.
Don't think I hate Doom 3 though, I love the game, but regarding to being
scary Dead Space is better imo. I'm still planning on playing Condemned but
haven't bought it yet.

so i'm only 30 or so minutes into dead space and i'm taking a break. this game is terrifying. i was sweating tense and nervous when the necromorphs first attacked! the perspective takes a bit of getting used to but i think that over-your-own shoulder view is brilliant! best of all you're never in some other screen where you feel safe; the hud is built into the world so i never get a second to rest my mind about the necros. kudos to ea redwood shoares!

so wait did you guys even think dead space is scary?
No. It's just too predictable. It's based on startling you versus building suspense. Ambushes are obvious. Ambushes happen after you complete an objective. Ambushes happen when you enter a big room. Ambushes happen when you walk down that elevated catwalk. Etc., etc..
Now I'm at the point in the game where they ambush you at short range, which is painful due to the sluggish controls and 3rd person camera. Followed by hordes of mobs attacking you in succession and overwhelming you because the controls make it difficult to see what's going on.
The controls take away from the immersion, which causes one to swap tension and suspense for tedium and frustration. At least the save points are decently placed.
In short, it's not scary, it's cliche. Even so, I was okay with it all, until the short-range horde attacks began. Now, I'm beginning to think that $39.99 was too much to pay for this.

Monster closets and monsters popping out of nowhere when you trigger an event (ie doom3, deadspace) =/= scary. It becomes too predictable.
Scary game = immersion, isolation, a sense that the monsters you face are stronger than you (meaning ammo isn't abundant and weapons aren't too powerful), and that the monsters themselves present themselves in a somewhat expected yet scary fashion.
One game that pretty much covers all of the above is System Shock 2. You're stuck all alone on a ship infected by the 'Many' with only scattered audio logs to tell the story. The enemies themselves never pop out of nowhere but instead tell you that they are 'around that corner' or 'behind that door' by groaning and making sounds, which makes it that much scarier. Also the fact that the monsters respawn (a controversial decision but makes sense) to give you a sense that the Many are all over the ship and that you are always outnumbered making you want to conserve ammo. Weapons can also degrade also making you think about every shot you fire. The soundtrack in this game is amazing, building up suspense and kicking in at the right moments every time. The graphics are outdated but are still unsettling today.

Don't post SS2 spoilers. It's still a game worth playing even with the dated graphics (look for the Rebirth mod that updates the graphics if you want to play SS2.)
I completely agree about event triggered mobs and monster closets ruining immersion. Let the player to make choices and plan about whether to stand and fight, whether to just ignore everything and just run to the objective (thus abandoning any loot in the area and/or saving ammo.) If the player has to make survival choices, the player becomes more involved in their character and the game becomes more immersive. Allow for different play styles like SS2 did (run n' gun, stealth & misdirection, using the environment to your advantage (i.e. reprogramming gun turrets.)) A lack of choice has turned Dead Space into more of a passive movie than a game of encroaching dread and horror.
Locking Isaac in a room (due to the contamination alarms) gets old quickly. The room with the movable bunks could have been so much more. As it stands, the most consistent 'boo!' moment has been exiting the tram and getting the message from whats-her-face about what to do next. Even though I know to expect it, that opening hiss-pop makes me jump a little every damn time.
Having said all that, Dead Space is a good game at $39.99 especially once you turn off vsynch and max out the mouse sensitivity to fix the sluggish mouse. *grumble*

I get scared solely playing games.
Any games.
But I don't find Bioshock that scary, creepy sure, just give me a shotgun.
Played F E A R or an expansion at a friends house.
Tried to open a door and 4 wibbly wobbly things came floating at me sticking to the roof and overall making me soil in large amounts. I also played Resident Evil 2 demo when I was younger. I always died straight away due to fear of not having any bullets and when I shot them they got back up.
Dino Crisis 2 on the PSX was pretty bad too, but Velociraptors can scare anyone without even trying.

As it stands now (until EA wises up), you can't get SS2 from a digital store like Steam. There is a place where you can download it, but since it's not Abandonware, that's technically illegal. But most people do it, and really, there's just no better way to get the game.
I did, however, purchase my copy of the game off of eBay. For $50! Worth every penny, IMO, but I don't expect (nor should EA) everyone to be willing to give up that amount of cash for a 10 year old game.
Back on topic, however: I just recently started playing Silent Hill 2, and already the game has gotten under my skin in the way only Condemned and SS2 have gotten.

hmm, i played this game but I must say this game was not scary in fackt it was quite realistic it felt like a movie or something but there where places that made me surprised (scared a little) :) and if i put all scary games i played and many mentioned above i must say there where only 2-3 games that made me a scared: "Return to castle wolfenstein" the catacombs level that was quite scary for me and Doom3 in total darknes was quite scary, and last but not least FEAR the parts where voices/screams and that dead girl showed up and jumped in your face and a bit ghosts at the end.
and thats it :( but anyway if u play any o these games on very big monitor/tv where a monster is almoast big as you, you can ♥♥♥♥ your pants for shure :D

Undying, probably scariest game ever created. Shame it didn't had any sequels.
After playing Undying, nothing really feels scary anymore. I laughed while playing Doom 3 and especially FEAR. I don't even consider Dead Space a horror game :) It doesn't scare you, just startles you. Kinda like old Resident Evil games.

For me, I make a huge distinction between the creepy/scary games and the startling games.
For the creepy/scary ones, they're the games that I went through feeling kind nervous and thinking "Damn, that's wrong." I'd say FEAR is right up there, and it's sequel looks to be just as good. I liked STALKER SoC a lot too, but that was because it felt REALLY "Russian" (at the risk of offending people), and in fact to me at least, felt a lot more Post-Apocalyptic than Fallout 3 did.
The startling ones are where something jumps out at you every couple doors. To be honest, none of those games have really stuck in my mind.
Dead Space seems to straddle the line for me. Those babies were just WRONG. I don't know why, I can't explain it, but there's something about that entire area that creeped me out. The beginning part of the med deck was just...wrong. Same for the crew deck and that entire room of dead bodies. But it also relied a LOT on thingies popping out of the vents. I think that's why I like it so much. It mixes it up nicely and you're never sure which you're going to get.
I remember loving System Shock 2, but I'm damned if I can remember more than a few things about it.

Wish I'd played the first Silent Hill :(
A comprehensive list of scary games I've played....in order of how scary they feel to me.
Fatal Frame 1,2,3
SS2
SH 2,3,4
Forbidden Siren 1,2
Dead Space
Undying and Jericho
Resi 0,1,3,4
L4D
Doom 3 (do 1 and 2 count as scary? >shrugs<)
Mentioned as scary, but as it's a scary interlude I don't count it:- Stalker SoC, Thief 3.
Of those, top of the list for me was Fatal Frame 2. It had a scary concept: a village holding Armageddon at bay by sacrifice. A scary plot: a twin always searching for hersister who inexplicably seems determined to allow herself to be sacrificed, finding the history and horror of the location as she goes. A scary atmosphere: the sound and graphics were subtle but resonant. And the game mechanics were the scariest I can think of. No guns, no baseball bats, no magic spells, just aim a camera at a ghost as it rushes at you and photograph it at the riskiest moment. You feel so vulnerable. Once you've faced your first ghost you're never quite the same.
Next comes SS2. The best sound design of any game ever. Just listening to any voice in it - Shodan, the Many, Xerxes, and every living or robotic enemy - unsettles you, and each in a different way! The plot is perfectly written, with superb twists, and cracking dialogue (more like monologue - this was the game that first used audio logs to show what happened and the fates of those who preceded you). The game mechanics are quite like Dead Space, but richer - more like Bioshock of course. Imagine if you could try to hack open lockers. Imagine hacking stores to make it sell items cheaper. Imagine obtaining one-off upgrades so, for example, ammo is sold at half price, or you can carry more weapons, or you automatically use health and air resupplies when the meter reaches zero, or items sold back to the store get more money, etc etc. That's like SS2 has. If I could wish for anything for Dead Space 2, it's these ideas plus a more interesting first half than 'get the ship working again'. Then it'd be perfect.
Finally, the Silent Hill series, especially 2. They're very good on characterisation - the people in the story are believable and often flawed. The idea of switching worlds from run-down and dreary to rotten and menacing is very clever and veers the player between melancholia and paranoia. The plot seems to be more driven by the location you're in than anything else, and the game mechanics - melee, a bit of shooting, and some puzzle solving - aren't too rewarding.

1) Fatal Frame II / Project Zero 2 (PS2)
This is just crazy! God I hate ghosts now! When the pad rumbles and you can hear a loud scream but you can't see it, only feel it and it then suddenly jumps on you from out of the wall - that's just too much!
2) Silent Hill (PSX)
The animation on the creatures was just incredible. I think the game would still scare me today just because how these creatures "walk" around on the street.
3) Resident Evil (original & remake: PSX / GCN)
Fixed camera and awful controls so you have a hard time to escape - that's all it takes!
...
long time nothing
...
Just a little bit:
- Dead Space (but you can just turn fear into aggression and stomp on your enemies, argh!)
- Bioshock (yeah, for some weird reason. I guess 'cause I'm playing it with a gamepad and it's difficult to turn around to see what's behind your back...)
- Tomb Raider (okay, this is embarrassing but I was really young and I didn't expect a dinosaur!)
Games that didn't really scare me but should have:
- Resident Evil 4 (Zombie-Action, not scary at all!)
- Half-Life 2: Ravenholm (yeah right!)

F.E.A.R. and the expansions in quite a few places
Vampire: Bloodlines in the mansion. The group did a great job at making the atmosphere in the mansion quite creepy. Just play it in the dark and have no distractions.
Definitely Condemned.

Tough one.
1- Forbidden Siren 1 & 2 simply because of the atmosphere and tension and it was a hard game to complete (unusual on consoles)
2- Stalker-SOC agian because of the atmosphere and it had a few 'jumps' in it
3- Resident Evil 2 - Especially the part with the licker coming through the interview room window.
4- Haunting Ground - I've seen a few people mention Clock Tower - Haunting ground was a similar idea where you had no weapons and had to run and hide from your antagonist. The feeling of helplessness was quite well done.
5- Eternal Darkness - A Nintendo classic - When the game made me think I had accidently deleted all my saves I nearly soiled myself.
Other games that scared me for the wrong reasons include: F.E.A.R (the same corridors over and over again), Grand Theft Auto IV (when it didn't look like coming out on the PC), Resident Evil 5 (It's going to cost me £600+ to play it on a new HiDef T.V and a playstation 3)

The game that made me jump the most was Alien v Predator, but on the atari Jaguar. From the first alien jumping at you with a shotty for defense, to the first time you hear a predator. Then when a predator de-cloak's in front of you while shoving a spear through your gut. That has never been beaten by anything since.
Sure modern games can make you jump, but if you think about it is it not because its more frantic than frightning. Fumbling with slow unresponsive or poorly maped controls.
Doom 3 = Frantic
Fear 1&2 = Poor design and frantic
Res Evils = Combersum controls
Dead space = Cumbersom, lazy response, frantic.
Don't get me wrong i like the game but it's not scary, it makes you sweat because you know that the controls are poor and that could get you killed. It looks beautifull full graphics on 1680*1050, very atmospheric.

You're wrong about Dead Space though, sure, the pc version has some trouble with how responsive the controls are (there are workarounds though), but the other versions, or playing with a Xbox360 controller, are quite responsive.
They just were rather lazy with that when they released it on pc and it's not sure they're going to fix it.
Anyhow, the scariest game I have ever played was... Big Rigs... oh, the sheer horror of it.........

The single most scary level in any game I have played is The Cradle from Thief: Deadly Shadows, I played it in the dark with a good pair of headphones on and nearly needed a change of underwear by the time I was done.
If you can get a copy of Thief Gold there is a level in that called Return to the Haunted cathedral that is pretty creepy too.

Like what kinds of work arounds? I tryed to play the 360 version but gave up because of the controls. I had heard that the control was not really any better on the PC, so I am curious if you have a way to "speed up the controls". Love to have it for the PC if I could do something with the controls. I thought it was scary or scary in a frantic way as was said. Still fun for me except the controls.

I don't understand your selection. FEAR is only "scary" in the cutscenes, which render them less scary as you don't actually do anything. Bioshock is not that bad, especially when you can become invisible. Ravenholm is a joke. It is just a fun level to practice with the gravity gun, not scary at all.
Thats not your call. The OP's question was the scariest game you ever played. Those were his choices not yours.

I don't know if anyone has said this (I'd guess not), but the original Tomb Raider. That seriously scared the ♥♥♥♥ off of me. When we were younger, my cousins and I watched my dad play through it. I was always out of the room at any sign of a danger lurking around the corner (mummies ffs).
Fast forward to when I'm eighteen. I put the original game disc into the tray of my Playstation 2, thinking I might've hardened up since before...
Nope. I couldn't do it. The biggest problem for me was that even when you kill everything around you, the suspense music would keep going! I wasn't even fighting anything when I turned it off. I was pulling a leaver and switched off the Ps2 because I thought something was still behind me.
I also haven't finished the original Half-Life. Something about all the creatures in that game really creep me out... and the feeling of being the only one fighting to get out of this huge underground facility with apparently no way out is quite frightening. I'm a wuss when it comes to scary games like that. I can tank through any scary movies, but scary games really get to me.
I've recently purchased Dead Space on 360. I don't know WHY I did that... because I really don't think I'll be able to make it to the end of the game.

I got Silent Hill 1 on PC when it first came out. I decided I'd try to get the full "scary game" experience by playing it alone with the lights off at night. Uhm...yeah, looking back on it, that wasn't a good idea. I ended up having to stop. I was expecting something like Resident Evil 2, but instead I got ACTUAL scariness, not just things startling me, zombies, etc. But...the weird looking little alien child things with knives, the ♥♥♥♥ed up nurses and manequins and stuff, the texturing of dried blood and stuff...very Lovecraftian, VERY scary. Nothing has trumped it since for me.

Thief 1. Scared me more than even Dead Space. Prooly because I was only 11.
However, when I've seen the Thief 1 Zombies I just freaked.
This was in the second map, Zombie risen when I stepped on it, and I ran away to where the holy water was (small room, with iconic glass windows). I knew the zombies are impossible to kill without holy water. Once I arrived in that room I waited for the zombie to come after me while having my bow ready with holy water on the water arrow. It never came. So I started looking at the glass window pictures, turning around.
Then suddenly I hear a growl, turn towords the entrance, and I see the zombie standing there.
I just screamed out (as in looking at the monitor and literally screamed) and pressed ESC -> exit game in 0.5 seconds. Then just stared at my monitor for about half a minute. It was pretty much the fastest game exit I have ever done in a game.
(this is how the zombie looked like for anyone who didn't played it (http://www.firingsquad.com/games/thief/images/zombie.jpg))

I don't see how people can pick Dead Space as their "scariest" game, then turn around and say BioShock isn't scary.
Bioshock reallllly wasn't scary. Dead Space was a little more scary, but mostly just gory.
The reality is that you can't really get scared when you are armed to the teeth. In Bioshock, even when you run out of ammo, you can easily run away and restock.
In Dead Space, there have been quite a few moments where I was taken by surprise by the sheer number of enemies I faced and how aggressive they were. I would use everything I got and still feel overhwhelmed. Like my guns weren't powerful enough. So I just had to change my strategies.
So, IMO, only games like Penumbra or Silent Hill (haven't played it) can be scary, the reason being, that you are deprived of many basics. In Penumbra, in the very first episode, you are soon left at the mercy of a WOLF! You are sneaking around the dark.. and you got NOTHING.
Now THAT game is scary. I had to uninstall it. All other games are just atmospheric. And I sure love them for it. Games like FEAR, STALKER, Dead Space. But I can't really feel scared when I have a gun in my hand.

BioShock has an excellent Horror atmosphere. While I will agree that games from the Silent Hill or Penumbra series are easily "scarier", but BioShock still gave me a few good scares and made me feel paranoid while playing. I'd really put BioShock and Dead Space on the same level. They're not bad horror games at all, but they aren't completely terrifying or disturbing.

This was my reaction.
Bioshock - I'm playing Bioshock now, but honestly I don't find it that scary. There have been a couple boo! scary moments thus far that made me jump, but it mostly feels like a beautiful shooter with an atmosphere that becomes slightly creepy in some rooms.
Half-Life 2As for the people who are wondering how some found HL2 scary, they're probably referring to Ravenholm. Man, playing the HL2 demo (which was Ravenholm). :S It took me a couple tries and reinstallations to get through that. After I bought HL2 and went through Ravenholm again, though, I didn't find it that scary. I do fear those FAST zombies though... *shudder*
Thief Oh god. The mine level of the Dark Project. The zombies. I only got through that by turning up the gamma & lighting to absolute max and running through as fast as I could. Their groans and the sound of flies hovering around their rotting flesh were not something I dealt with well.
Don't even mention The Cradle.
Left 4 Dead This is surprisingly scary (for me) if I play it on Singleplayer. If I've got human buddies, especially if they have microphones, it's just some zombie shooting fun. But if it's just me and the AI buddies (or worse yet, if I boot out the AI companions and try to solo it), it's some serious scary business. Any smoker or hunter can grab you from the shadows and boom, you're dead. Also, hordes = NOT FUN when you've booted/killed your AI companions.

None of the games listed so far are scary.
At all.
<snickers to himself>
Setting aside that little quip, I'll add something resembling relevancy:
I remember finding games scary, but no particular one stands out. Now, if we're talking creepy, or just all around *messed* up, well.. we might be getting somewhere. Most recently, I'd say Cryostasis. That game is just all wack. In the head region.
Yeah.
And to qualify my earlier statement: Scariness, like any other element of a videogame/movie/*anything* else, is entirely, completely, and utterly, oh and in all ways possible--subjective.
Though I'm sure someone's said that in the previous 9 pages, so there I go, wasting space again. Silly me.
Edit: I didn't find Dead Space scary, but it was atmospheric as all hell. Awesome game, too.

Ah, some of the games mentioned here... I'll throw in my 2 cents.
Games I've played - Hl2, Resident Evil 4, Aliens vs. Predators 2, quite a bit of Dead Space, a fraction of Silent Hill 2 but have watched enough to know about it, enough to judge Penumbra by, the Bioshock demo, L4D (s♥♥♥♥er), and although I haven't played them, I know a little about Condemned and System Shock 2 from other sources.
Halflife 2 - Ravenholme was very, very nicely done. What struck me the most by far was the incredible, immersive atmosphere, what with the music, Grigori yelling ♥♥♥♥ at you, shotguns + no ammo... all up to standard. HOWEVER, it really cannot be described as scary, especially compared to other horror titles. Not to say it's bad, or ineffective, or crude... it's actually probably so well done it's NOT scary...
Resident Evil 4 - I f*cking loved this game. The combination of brilliant storyline progression, interesting variety of weapons, the perpetual, game-defining lack of ammo, ect. all amounted to a very atmospheric game. But again, it really couldn't be called scary - but imo, having it any more fear-filled than was already induced through the no-ammo trauma would have detracted from the immense experience.
Aliens Vs. Predators 2 - This game basically only features the marine campaign when it comes to judging it on its horror. Basically, the entire campaign is full of pitch black, no ammo, very creepy noises and lots of isolation. What I really enjoyed particularly about this was the incredible back story built up through the finding of memos and diary extracts - a great way to perpetuate an INCREDIBLY spine-tingling environment, but something I feel was not so well reproduced in Dead Space...
What I've played of Dead Space - To be honest, it's not nearly as scary as I imagined. I'm usually one who gets all creeped out by the silliest things, but I've found Dead Space to be, although definitely full of little frights and mutilated corpse-things comin' right at ya (although the shock factor wore off VERY fast after the first few times), it again only achieves a mediocre atmospheric in my book.
Penumbra (specifically Overture, I've heard Black Plague's even scarier) - I... holy sh*t... I've got nowhere with this game. I bought it when it was on sale a few months back, and have managed to play it for about 15 minutes about once a month. I'd say that its major fear factors are a) realism, b) no weapons, c) isolation - by this, I mean that awful, awful feeling of no humans for hundreds of miles. I actually think it also helps that it's in an artic, cold setting, as opposed to a desert or something... This, my friends, is my personal chart-topper.
Silent Hill 2 - Again, I didn't get far in this one. I have to admit, what probably stops me playing this is the stress of having to work out complex, interesting puzzles under the pressure of heart-pumping terror... again, the pseudo-realism, isolation and brilliant, oh-so-brilliant nods towards the storyline and the other character backgrounds fills this game with win.
Bioshock Demo - not much to say about this, except that, brilliant and atmospheric as it was, it doesn't seem like a game that really wants to be a full-blown horror. It reminds me alot of Fallout 3, especially when you're in the sewers... a few frights, a bit creepy, but overall, just generally very atmospheric.
L4D - No. Just no. Imo, not even a very good game overall - zero replayability on a multiplayer game = not worth $50. Still, I won't make the same mistake with L4D2. ;)
Condemned/System Shock 2 - not that I've ever played them, but I thought they'd be worth mentioning since I see them mentioned on "Scariest games ever" lists... always. I also watched a video of a bit in Condemned where you're chased by a bear... *shudders*.
Conclusion - I actually find myself unable to fully enjoy and apreciate REALLY scary games, since I literally can't play them (this is not to say they're bad in any way)... but really, this is why games like Resident Evil 4, which balance atmosphere and gameplay perfectly, are such masterpieces.

Personally, I have a phobia of being underwater with large creatures (and in some cases, large inanimate objects), so even Super Mario 64 scared me.
But if we're talking games that are SUPPOSED to scare...
Clive Barker's Undying was scary. As was Penumbra.
In the right places, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines was very scary. Namely I'm thinking about that terrible house full of blood and flies and skin bags.

here is my list
1) Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 (both games scare the ♥♥♥♥ out of me by so many different elements, so im putting them up there both at my number 1)
2) Doom 3
3) F.E.A.R.
4) Bioshock, half-life 2(ravenholm)
I haven't played silent hill but i heard it was pretty scary!
I honestly didn't like Doom 3 much, the weapons were far too clunky :p and I got half way through but gave up because it was pissing me off way too much. Bioshock and HL2 are both fantastic but not scary at all IMO. Silent Hill is more disturbing than scary. Has anyone played the Silent Hill arcade game? The fact that its on-rails gave them alot more control over the players field of view, allowing for better scares. Scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me! :D

Now, I'm beginning to think that $39.99 was too much to pay for this.
hmm... i believe i will disagree with you on many fronts. yes it was a bit predictable and cliche, but the controls weren't bad. if you were refering to Hold Mouse 2, click Mouse 1 to fire when you said that, if you press either Shift or Caps Lock (maybe Ctrl, it's been awhile) your guys holds up the gun so you can shoot easier. Sluggish Conrols, you're again refering to firing? because the controls are anything but sluggish.
anyway my scariest games are
- Doom 3
- Dead Space
i haven't played any silent hill

I played Resident Evil 1-3 recently, also all three (eh.. make that two) Penumbra, Call of Cthulhu and now Dead Space. Dead Space really freaks me out when playing it at night.
Call of Cthulhu had its moments, Penumbra was really good - great atmosphere and the lack of weapons is awesome (actually not).

The graphics are outdated but are still unsettling today.Agreed completely.
I don't understand how anyone can find Doom3 scary after the first half hour, once you figure out ~*something*~ will pop out of a closet whenever you pick up an ammo box it's completely predictable. FEAR did a far better job of freaking out and unnerving the player. And System Shock 2 was masterful at creeping you out and throwing you off your hinges.
Eternal Darkness deserves a mention for these things, too.

Ecstatica.
Jesus man, I thought I was the only one who ever bought this damnable game. I've probably still got it somewhere boxed on about 15 floppy disks. It was scary because it was so f,cking bizarre. Werewolf, or That B@st@rd Werewolf as it became known, turning up anytime and slapping you into next week. Drunken bears. Little pigs biting your ankles. Green dragons. Some fat nymphomaniac chasing you trying to screw you. Weird broomstick travel. Pan and his naked dancing ladies. Walking in on orgies. I'm so glad I played this game when it was cutting edge graphics. It damaged me in a good way. And if I knew how to give rep you'd get some for mentioning this masterpiece.
Other than that, System Shock 2 is the most creepy, scary, engrossing, atmospheric game ever.

In no particular order :
Alien VS Predator 1 & 2
The first one had an incredible atmosphere, the second one wasn't bad either
Doom 3
Cheap but very effective scares... Remember that chainsaw wielding zombie you meet in the Delta labs!
Clive Barker's Undying
Somewhat older game, but it had it's moments, especially when those crazy gargoyles would appear from nowhere.
F.E.A.R.
Ah...Alma... Some very effective scenes the first time you play through it.
Zombie Panic Source
Play this at night and I'll guarantee you'll jump from your seat a few times!
STALKER Shadows of Chernobyl
Some of the labs in that game are really frightening. Especially when you encounter those poltergeists.
Condemned : Criminal Origins
The department store, the abandoned house, great atmosphere, too bad the story gets somewhat lousy in the end...
Dead Space
I haven't finished it yet, but it's definitely one of the scariest games around !
and a special mention for Penumbra : Black Plague, which I still haven't managed to finish  That's one messed up game!
Of course, to really enjoy these games, you have to play them during the night, in the dark and with some quality headphones... :D

Fear 1 + 2

When it first came out, Doom 64 scared the bageebees out of me (I was like 12 or 13). I remember my friend and I playing it until the wee hours at his house and being scared out of our wits when we were stuck in some dark hallway with the creepy music in the background and all of a sudden an imp or those pinkie demons pop-up at you, or one of those flaming skulls. There's moments in Doom 3 like this as well, but Doom 64 had a more hellish atmosphere since you did spend a lot of time in hell. The monsters were 2D sprites, but it was the atmosphere (the music, coupled with the sound effects and the feeling of dread...being in hell aka Phobos, Deimos and Mars).
System Shock 2 scared me, but I wasn't really into those types of games at the time (mostly Quake 3, Unreal, Unreal Tournament and Quake 2).
The original Quake was kind of freaky, it had a similar atmosphere to Doom 64 (which I kind of think was inspired by Quake since it came out shortly after).
I really want to get Dead Space but I am waiting until it goes down $10 more dollars.

In what universe was RE 4 scary? Anyhow SH2 and the third aswell as number 4 had it moments. The first fear game along with the first expansion had some moments where you really jumped off the chair. Doom 3? Naah it was way to predictable for my taste.

Prolly most scary game ever made: Penumbra Black Plague + the original Overture. bought pack on steam when it was on sale too.
You don't get any weapons and there's weird ♥♥♥ monsters running after you in an underground facility you have to find a way out of. Its as scary as you could picture it.
oh -- I ended up using a walkthrough guide to get through the whole game to avoid having a stroke.
Dead Space - kinda, but I got desensitized after a while.
Fear - some places definitely had a scary atmosphere.
Doom 3 - "cant see ♥♥♥♥ captain" lame ♥♥♥ scares
Stalker - also had some scary atmosphere, in those underground labs
RE 1-3 series - I played them when I was around 12 or younger, it scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me I was too scared to leave the police station in RE3. RE1 I just watched my friend play and was scared.
Silent Hill 1 - same deal as RE series... yeah it took me about 1 hour to play the first 15 minutes of the game, then I had enough. Maybe I should replay these, but meh.

Oblivion had some good stuff in it when you're in the haunted mansion for the first time .
I didn't know there was going to be ghost in the middle of the night or the secret crypt in the basement was freaky as well.
plus the Vampire quest with the dagger was good as well..
Fallout 3 had a few good moments when your doing the Dunwhich building quest and there are ghouls everywhere.
plus a bunch of other quests with Ghouls all over .
plus in the PC version if you get the Pitch black mod for Fallout 3 night time because pitch black and you can't see more than 5 feet ahead of you without a light.
the Point Look Out DLC had some freaky dungeons as well.
Stalker the whole game had an eerie feel to it you never felt safe anywhere in that game .

Dead Space freaked me out... there was one level I think, when you were being chased by the Regenerator or whatever, and I just had to mute the volume. I just couldnt handle the intensity. The music and monsters roaring just really gets your blood pumping.
Bioshock was freaky, but not really scary. It was freaky because you had a bunch of psychos screaming and laughing down a hallway and then you knew they were coming for you. The anticipation is what makes it frightening.
The only part of Half life that really scared me was actually in Episode 2. The part where you are chased by the antlion guard. I dont know why, I had like a panic attack. I guess it was just freaky hearing it grunting and knowing it was like right behind me as I ran from tunnel to tunnel. I was hopping up and down in my seat freaking out. Just goes to show how immersive the half life games are.

I would have to say....F.E.A.R: Perseus had the scariest part ever. Like ever. The part near the beginning where you see the guy go into the alley, then you go it to get some health, then turn around and HE"S RIGHT THERE. God that scared the crap out of me. But yeah, RE4's Regenerators are probably the scariest monster ever tho. That sound....their breathing....the music....THEIR TEETH! But then you get the thermal vision and they become a piece of cake until they get spikes, then, they become something out of a nightmare I imagine you would have if you were high on every psychoactive drug from here to Botswana.

The whole game is made with puppets which re-enact the stories, they don't move their mouths and they don't blink, making it way scarier. And you see each story twice, once as the victim and once as the murderer.)

The only thing scary about dead space was how horrible the mouse and keyboard controls were.

I have found scary also:

- System Shock 2 - this is just "omg".
- FEAR 1 - because of sudden things
- Doom 3 & sometimes Quake 4
- Silent Hill 2 :)

Scared Guy Plays F.E.A.R. Alone in the Dark
http://www.dorkly.com/video/1801/scared-guy-plays-fear-alone-in-the-dark
Original AVP for Atari Jaguar. Blows the socks off all future revisions. Not as advanced graphically but the sound and enemy placement just freaks you out. Really planned ahead where the player would be and what would freak you out more if something attacked you while you were focused in another area. Also since it wasn't as fast paced, you had to watch your ammo. Its not like the unlimited ammo splatter fests you see AVP as today. Heck you go for awhile with just a shotgun. Takes time till you finally get a pulse rifle. Even more later till you finally get the smart gun. All of this, without a motion tracker till late in the game. Most awesome fact, no motion tracker!!
Marathon: EVIL. 3rd party conversion of the original but man those Flicka were freaky in the dark with them suddenly growling.
Resident Evil 1. Original still the best. Zombies actually behave like zombies should and plenty of tension on some of the puzzles.
Cold Fear. More of an honorable mention but I'll admit to jumping after I cleared the ship of zombies then came back through later to find them spring up stronger cause I didn't blow the heads off. I learned after that, double tap. Yeah people whine its a play off RE4 cause they both launched close to one another. But personally Cold Fear > RE4 even with the main characters being rather dumb. Environment and story was much more believable than RE4. Plus RE4 just seemed like it was an excuse to shift into "fast moving" zombies from it's roots. I prefer Romero's take on it. Traditional slow movers give the sense of impossible odds vs fast movers which can only provide shock scares. Shock gets old fast.

The original Quake....ground breaking in its day with the soundtrack from Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails
Ageed, my friend and I played multiplayer and he used to say to kme "I hear things!"
i Am disappointed, maybe cause my mind is destroyed from all the horor fiction i consume daily. but i dident even react to anything in game.

The Penumbra-series and Dead Space.
These games got my heart pounding like crazy.
Bioshock had some pretty good moments as well but overall, less creepy imo.
I'm pretty curious about Amnesia: The Dark Descent (http://store.steampowered.com/app/57300/) which is supposed to come out in August.

I haven't played to many horror based games, but overall you can't beat Silent Hill. Doom 3 wasn't scary, just a bunch of cheap, predictable scares. Silent Hill is a good example of a horror series, it makes wonderful atmosphere and the scares aren't that predictable.

Yeah the gamecube remake of Resident Evil definitely a good one. They altered the zombies a bit from the original... if you don't burn the bodies they get up after a while and run straight at you. It was a solid move by the developers.. incredibly scary and just works well gameplay wise.
Also the 'Last Man on Earth' Mutation mode for Left for Dead 2 was surprisingly scary as ♥♥♥♥ at times. I'm not even really sure why, it just was.
I'm on chapter 5 of Dead Space.. must admit it's jolted me a few times already.

The original FEAR was one of the scariest games I played. I'm not a big FPS player, and I'm going to start Dead Space for the first time, so we'll see.
It was pretty much every time I saw that little girl in FEAR, like crawling through the ducts and she comes sprawling right at you like a spider alien.
5.1 surround system in the dark, late at night. Ya...it was freaky.

Dead Space wasnt so bad for me, got used to all the stuff fast. (cept 1 time a baby scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me when it climbed up a wall next to my face)
FEAR 1 scared me when I first got it, put it down and didnt play it again for 2 years. (was like 14), When I played it again I found Alma cute instead of scary, became 1 of my all time fav games though
Doom 3 wasnt scary at all. I could pre fire around the exact corner an imp would jump out from every time. First hour good, next 5 dull as ♥♥♥♥

Ah, I wish I could still be scared by entertainment. I think the last game to send chills up my spine was S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl.
I'm playing through Dead Space for the first time now. It's atmosphere is pretty nice, and it's rather immersive. However, it has the Hollywood horror problems of enemies which won't stop jumping out at you in predictable ways and hardly ever making use of stillness, loneliness and subtlety. It isn't scaring me for the aforementioned reasons.
Silent Hill 2 - Unfortunately I played this one when games no longer scared me, but it did manage to leave me feeling a twinge of dread as you continued to descend further and further underground as James' reality became further contorted and twisted.
Shadow of Chernobyl - Despite this game's poor engineering and numerous flaws, it's still one of my most loved. Its atmosphere is extraordinarily good in every way and the gunplay is mighty entertaining. I was very immersed and when some horror elements made their appearance, I was pretty terrified. I remember sitting on some steps for a while 2when underground, refusing to go on as a (unknown to me at the time) Controller distorted my perceptions.
F.E.A.R. - The disconnection between horror and action elements is exasperating for most, but when I played it many years ago it did not bother me. This game made me perpetually crap my pants, even though it didn't do the best job with horror. Still one of my favorite shooters, even though many would consider it stale.
Condemned: Criminal Origins - Sadly played when I could no longer be scared. Brilliant game, though. Very nice atmosphere, excellent sound design. It handles horror very well.
I somehow managed to play through Resident Evil 3 when I was a child, despite nearly dying of stress time and time again. I was absolutely terrified. I now realize that Resident Evil games are terrible--even RE4 I didn't enjoy.
When I first got Doom 3 I was constantly finding it hard to move on, and for that I feel like a girl. Doom 3 handles horror extremely badly.

Silent Hill 3 for me. While Dead Space is scary for me (emphasis: for me, I know others perceive it to be not scary), I don't think it comes close to the sick minds at Konami Entertainment Japan

Dead Space IS scary.
The possibilities where the monsters come from are endless and you cant remember all (on a second playthrough).
Playing the game without sound/low volume draws a lot. Put the volume, where you hear the steady creeping, howling, sth. falling down...you dont know where to look first...not counting multiple enemy encounters.
Dead Space does a good job. It scares you, challenges you (not puzzlewise! actionwise!) and is never frustrating regarding the save points (excluding impossible mode: its a lot harder referring to ammo and own survivability)
Only thing that bothers me is the linearity (right word? sorry no native) The game is and will be always the same, you cant change your course of action i.e. doing an objective before the other, skipping objectives etc.
If u play this on PC do this:
1 Volume up!
2 Lights off
3 Difficulty Hard/Impossible (If you are a fps-player everything else will not be scary!)
4 Your heart will be in your mouth :p
Edit: Dont get frustrated on dying, the death-animations vary ;)

People see the cheap shocks Dead Space offers and immediately discount everything else. The sound and visual design of this game are an absolute treat for a horror fanatic. Granted, I'm not very far into it, but I find myself creeping along because the environment is screwing with me the entire time. So yes, like many of you, I agree that the shocks can feel a bit cheap (only after the fact. When they actually happen I, personally, think they're pretty effective), but I don't think they take away from the terrifying atmosphere in the least.
Between this and Extraction, I'm hooked on this haunted house franchise for the long term.
Favorite semi-recent horror games, in no particular order:
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Dead Space (so far, so good)
Dead Space: Extraction
Fatal Frame (I only watched most of this -- still really creepy)
Older ones:
Nocturne (spiritual precursor to the Bloodrayne series. never played those)
Alone in the Dark
Call of Cthulhu
Eternal Darkness (gamecube exclusive. Really, really good)

Plants vs Zombies, the zombies freak me out, they just keep coming, and than there is that hobo guy, gives me shivers.
Seriously though, the only thing scary about Dead Space is the atmosphere and presentation. The gameplay itself doesn't contribute to it at all.

Penumbra series, and Amnesia.
Seriously, I can't even play them for 15 MINUTES without having to turn off the game. You have no weapons at all, nothing. You're completely defenseless, away from anyone, and scared as hell. Best Horror Games ever.
But, on the topic of Dead Space, it's a very good game, very atmospheric, but it's not really scary. 45 in 50 times it uses jump scares, and those are very predictable.

so somebody asked if stalker was any good and i have to say absolutely YES.. i just went back and replayed all 3 games and loved it. i strongly recommend getting the stalker complete 2009 mod for the first 2 games though. makes the games dramatically better.
anyways my list:
F.E.A.R. 1 and 2 although 2 scared me more for some reason
dead space of course
re4
silent hill homecoming (ppl may disagree but it was pretty scary to ME)
Penumbra games and Amnesia
there are lots of other games that have scary parts to them but these are the games that pretty much freaked me out start to finish. and i clasify scary games as being in either 2 categories.. one is the brooding-creepy-more-atmospheric type scary, and the other would be the jump-out-and-soil-your-pants scary. the best scary games have elements of both imo.. but there are good games in both camps. (i will admit that the "best" ones imo seem to be more of the brooding-type-scary games like penumbra)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent, definitely. Nothing, not FEAR, not Doom 3 (obviously), not Dead Space, not Half-Life 1/2/e1/e2; no game has succeeded in getting me as scared half as well as Amnesia. Games aren't that scary to me, to be honest (and I don't play many horror games anyway), but Amnesia quite frankly is the cream of the crop in the genre.

that would be thief... no other game or series has ever come close to the immersion or scare factor for the thief games, even the 3rd game wasnt as good as the first 2.
and i have played alot of so called scary games, dead space makes me yawn with indifference to the non-scary factor.
quake scary, dont make me laugh... non of valves games are scary, unless your a super pansy-waste, not scary... fear was not scary either, or fear 2 for that matter, odd and a bit weird but not scary. not a single doom game was scary, you get a few surprises but thats it. as for stalker, it looked incredibly lame and a waste of my money... resident evil, boring yes/scary not so much i found most of the games in the series a yawn fest not a single one was really very interesting, i do have to say that the first 3 games in the series actually had decent story lines 4 and 5 arent worth the digital space they collectively use.
the only games i have ever found to be truly scary or hair raising were thief 1&2 and penumbra (same guys who are making amnesia) the only games ever that gave me the creepy heebyjeebies or were even remotely scary.

Honestly, I'm really surprised that Metro 2033 hasn't even been mentioned yet. It may not have been made specifically as a horror game, but it definitely has it's moments. It even managed to include enemies that you're better off sneaking past then fighting, either due to your lack of ammo or their ridiculous health. If a "Librarian", as they're called, manages to spot you, you have to stand perfectly still and stare him in the eye. Then you back away slowly and he will (hopefully) not consider you to be a threat. It ends up leading to some super intense moments, especially if you have a high-end rig. The game has some of the best graphics out there right now. Again, definitely not to the level of horror atmosphere that Amnesia boasts, but I thought it was at least worth a mention.

Clive Barker's Undying!
That's a classic (+1 rep for that pick) unfortunately for younger players they don't like it. (old gameplay and outdated graphics).
Is a shame that didn't sale well despite good reviews and EA cancelled their partnership with Clive Barker.
American McGee returned to work with EA maybe Clive in the future?
