Ok, I can't connect to the steam, it says No Connection...
I just reinstalled Steam and now I got the message: "Steam needs to be online to update."Please confirm your network connection and try again."
My internet connection is fine.
EDIT: fixed by delete ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.valvesoftware.steam.ipctool.plist and reinstall the Steam.

Uh, HELL NO I'M NOT REINSTALLING STEAM FOR THE 3RD-4TH TIME... If you read ABOVE you can see that one dude can't even reinstall it, so no freaking way.

I honestly cannot tell if that was sarcasm.

The only time I've ever received this message in the past is when I've logged in on another PC. Honestly makes me a bit suspicious.

And I know not everyone got the popup after this downtime.

Steam is up more then I would expect it to be serving well over 1.5 million customers in a given time period is quite hard. So the fact that they do it as well as they do is quite an achievement. Sucks that people think they are all that maters. But for me steam is rarely down.

I got it, at a bad time too, pissed me off, took me out of full screen while playing a game, then when I restarted to login, it could not connect to the internet, and asked if I wanted to restart so I did, then it just sat running without displaying its UI until I killed in in taskman, and restarted it.

Getting quite jarateed off with this, yes i know Steam are rarely offline, yes i know it's commendable that they are able to stay online as much as they do, but in the 2 or 3 weeks that i had the new Steam UI 2010 beta i didn't get disconnected once because of maintenance....

Maybe that was just a fluke i don't know, but in the last 2 or so hours i've been disconnected with no reason why.. (Old Steam UI had the message in the friends window about Maintenance... now it just has the "No network connection could be made" crap...)

IMO i think the maintenance message should have a rough ETA of when it's going to be fixed... or has the maintanence message been deprecated like the Server browser

They probably just added an expiration on accounts if you are idle to long and it logs you off. They might have done this to keep the servers from being over loaded from people just staying logged in.

I got this this morning after leaving it logged in all night.

If that is the case, then it's not cool at all. Steam is basically what I use to stay in contact with my friends online, even if I'm off doing something else in my room. And the fact that it even logs me off while I'm currently in a game is just beyond logic.

Do we have any kind of word from Valve on what the story is with this?

So ppl cannot have 1 comp offline all the time while there playing online on another computer.

I think it's more like they are over-capacity and rather than buy new servers, they are doing this.

In a way you're right, it's for protection...against spending more money on capacity. :P

Besides, in my experience if you try and login to Steam while another login session is active it won't let you login the second time, so that protection would do what you suggest.

not if you login then set to always login in,then pull the Internet plug on that comp.

If you go into offline mode while online, it puts a token on your account preventing you from using a different PC to login to the same account until you remove offline mode and get back the token, if you managed to get past this, it's probably a fluke.

This account credentials warning popped up not too long ago for lots of other people:

It would appear that this is normal behavior. In your ..\Steam\Public folder, there is a file titled steamui_{language}.txt. Because everyone here speaks English, here's a portion of steamui_english.txt:

"Steam_RefreshLogin_Title" "Steam - Refresh Login"
"Steam_RefreshLogin_InfoTicketExpired" "Your Steam ticket has expired.\nPlease re-enter your password to continue."
"Steam_RefreshLogin_InvalidPassword" "Your account credentials have expired.\nPlease re-enter your password to continue."

Beyond that, I have no further explanation. But if anyone sees this dialog box pop up, I'd say you should have no worries when entering your account credentials into it. If you are unable to log back in, contact Steam Support.

Nothing is wrong and because this popped up for more people doesn't necessarily mean changes were made to anything. Maybe, but not definitely. Point is, it's nothing to worry about.

I disagree, respectfully ofcourse. This is completely new to me and I wonder if in fact there is a new idle-kick policy in place with Steam. This is a serious issue for myself. I've purposely chosen Steam over other digital distribution providers because of the integrated community features, namely Friends. If that usage is suddenly impaired for whatever reason, I will likely go back to using software like AIM or Windows Messenger to keep in contact with friends. Therefore my likelihood for a Steam purchase will depend entirely upon price and nothing more. This isn't some sort of "jarateed" threat or anything, it's just concern and a truthful evaluation of the matter.

I'm currently unable to connect to my friends list. There were some severe connectivity issues with L4D2 earlier as well.

Edit: I'm in Norway.

Edit2: Now it works ...

Let me add. I do have the occasional issue where "steam cloud could not synchronize [...]" and I'm unable to connect to my friend list. This usually don't affect me in a big way, and is uaually ignored on my part, but at times, this is very annoying.

Yet again, an edit: Oh ffs, I just lost connection again. Fix this please.

I very much beg to differ. I can connect to Steam and friend's list, but I get frequently "disconnected" from steam per chats, and I can't make it more than 30 seconds into a MW2 match, IF I can get into one before it gives me "Steam Connect failed".

YET, I'm still connected, chats are working, friend's list is there, etc. My internet connection isn't having issues, everything else is working too.

And on my latest attempt, Steam couldn't sync my MW2 files with the steam cloud.

This is not an individual client issue. This is a widespread issue and blowing it off as if it's not, is purely ridiculous.

Not only was this an issue yesterday for a good portion of the day, it seems to be today again as well. Glad I spend so much money on these games only to be screwed out of playing them..../sarcasm

We keep getting "steam connect failed" from between 20 to 60 seconds after joining a game every time.

in the rare cases we do get to play for a bit longer , the server usually gets disconnected after some time and a new server is not selected , we get disconnected.

I'm having the issue in which I can't connect to my friend's list and such myself. I can't connect to the friends server, and my games library isn't showing friends playing or recording achievements I've earned in game.

What program is giving you the "Steam Connect failed" message? The MW2 game client? The MW2 game server that your MW2 game client has connected to? Or something else?

It's important to remember that the Internet doesn't "work" or "not work". There are many paths to many different servers. It's entirely feasible that a connection from your home to one server works fine, but a connection from your home to another server doesn't work at the moment.

Without a clear indication of what it is that's not working for you, it's difficult for me to provide any assistance.

I know how the internet works, which is why I'd called you out. I've worked at an ISP for years and have dealt with issues like this.

Like I said in my original post, my chats would continue to work, and the steam client would show me connected. CODMW2 would launch, I'd go to find a lobby, sometimes it would join a lobby, and then almost immediately disconnect with the "Steam Connect Failed" message, or when searching for a lobby I'd get the same message. This was the same issue I had yesterday, and it seems to be resolved now.

I'm technically in the Midwest USA (Michigan) but we get hit with a lot of "east coast" issues.

I was pretty sure I was very explicit in what part of steam wasn't working...maybe this will clarify a bit?

Great! What's your diagnosis?
Well, with the fact that everything that IW/MW2 has going with matchmaking and Steam has going with the involvement being "top secret" I can't even begin to suggest where to look for issues. From what I've experienced it all seems to be due to high latency and load on the servers/connections that are used in that process.
Not perfectly; I just want to confirm that you're getting this message from the MW2 game client.

Yes, and it's not a new issue, though when the game was first released I never saw these issues...and they seem to have gotten the worst in the last month or so.

Yeah, got the same 'too busy to handle your request'. You'd think Valve with all there stat gathering would know the server demands and upgrade accordingly so you don't get outages during patches. Oh wait, that might cost money. They are not a subsidiary of BP are they?

Bandwidth is a problem that Valve admits to just throwing money at.
In a recent interview with Gabe that I saw he stated that they use more bandwidth than the entire country of Italy.

Often performance problems are not just with the servers but somewhere along the many hops between the end-user's connection and the servers.

Have you tried using a different download region.

I'm sorry you're having trouble, wiggdogga, but the fact of the matter is that Steam isn't down. If you can't connect, there's something going on between your client and the Steam servers.

then why has this only happened after a steam support recommended fix, for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ steam problem which i didnt bring about? and why is it happening now? ive downloaded plenty of updates and all that from steam, and have changed no internet settings at all.

btw, steam isnt 'down' for me per se- it goes to download a client update and continually stalls at 50%. meaning i cant use it at all

2 million people on steam today. You are having a problem.
That does suck but its more likely a problem specific to your configuration than a problem with the new steam client.

06-11-2010, 07:15 AM
so i just managed to get the problem fixed. had to get a friend to torrent all his steam files to me, then had to copy paste them into my steam folder.

how can it be a problem 'specific' to me when so many other people get it? and if it was a problem with my net, surely other downloads wouldnt work? and when ive been able to download multiple other steam client and game updates with no issue before? i enjoy steam, but its buggy as hell. and im still getting problems with my weekly l4d2 update (the proposed FIX recommended by steam support brought about this whole problem).

i enjoy steam, but its simply far too buggy and prone to ridiculous ♥♥♥♥ ups

I'm download fine at around 500 KB/s, which is the maximum of my connection. I haven't seen any slowdown today but I guess if you have bandwidth problems, you could try switching to different servers since the problem is not always related to their servers.

Is anyone on the East Coast US still having problems? I'm still getting the "cannot connect" errors, and I've tried everything but uninstalling and reinstalling steam from scratch, which I'd REALLY like to avoid.

No update on the issue in the downtime thread, so I assume the issue is ongoing.

I took some screenshots of the errors I, along with these people have been having.

When loading Steam, it immediately gives a connection error, followed by a differently-worded assessment in the friends list:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1115439/Steam%20Connection%201.png
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1115439/Steam%20Connection%202.png

When Steam makes a connection, the friends list looks like this for a few seconds before saying it has no connection again:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1115439/Steam%20Connection%203.png

When exiting Steam from the taskbar, you get this message:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1115439/Steam%20Connection%204.png

If the friends list (and I'm using this as an example because it's the most available real-time evidence) connects enough to let you talk to somebody, it's only for a matter of seconds before Steam loses connection again.

I hope this helps :P

The only "error" I can report (if you can call it an error) is that, when exiting out of Steam, I get a message saying:

"Steam is currently syncing your game files with the Steam Cloud. Steam will automatically exit when this is completed.

Significant? I dunno, but that popup only shows up for a second before disappearing (probably directly related to Steam connecting and disconnecting).

Ok, you know what, I CAN'T GET 5 MINUTES OF GAMEPLAY IN ON ANY GAME. You guys ****ing fail at managing a game platform. Platform dies, I can't play mw2. You guys SUCK. I own like 3000$ worth of games on steam, mostly multiplayer, and its nice when ♥♥♥♥ keeps going down. Morons.

There will be a Steam Server update today July 21 around 04:00 PDT (GMT-0700). The downtime is expected to be very brief. Content downloads and game play should not be affected.

Game play totally not affected. thx guise.

MW2, a game I paid 60$ for, and I can't play because the FAIL steam cloud keeps going up and down. It's NOT up, its cutting in and out. ♥♥♥♥ this ♥♥♥♥. I tell you, if I could get any of these games to work without this ♥♥♥♥ program, I would. Any moron who says this doesn't affect gameplay is just that; a tard.

You should really chill out. OH NO FOR A WHILE I CAN'T PLAY A VIDEO GAME!!!!! WAH WAH WAH!!!! Be a man, I'm sure the gameplay time you have gotten out of MWFAIL2 massively outweighs this teeny tiny amount of downtime anyways. It's not like it's not going to be back up.

btw, 45 min is not brief...

Well, I'm not having any issues at this very moment. Though, the biggest issue I did have and seems to be resolved now is that Portal kept trying to download. I uninstalled the game forever ago and it just kept wanting to re-install.

So it looks like they're trying to fix a bunch of issues before bringing the servers fully back online.

Again, I stress that I haven't lost connection in.. 14 minutes now. So it seems that they're done, just took them a bit longer than they expected.

Seriously though, everyone needs to just grow up. (by everyone, I mean people who complain about maintenance downtime) Steam'll be back up soon enough.

You know what, you little prick? I AM a man, I work all day, I have a ♥♥♥♥ing job, and if I want to play a game after work, thats my perogative, but when a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ distribution platform foils that chance, it's bull♥♥♥♥.

Getsuga Tensho
07-21-2010, 04:50 PM
I'm just getting annoyed at the fact that it keeps going down in the middle of chat. Middle of typing and lose connections, come on - have some global announcemenst, 10-15mins announcement in advance to let people finish up for a short downtime and just keep the servers down for the maintenance instead of continuously reconnecting and disconnecting several times and a short period of time.

It's not NEAR "very brief" ffs! Almost hour of constant up and down.
No chances to play in L4D2.
You guys should NOT turn ON your servers untill all maintenance stuff is done and do not announce brief down when it's not brief.

Or at least when you understand that you're screwed up just edit your maintenance announcing post with up-to-date info thank you.

according to http://store.steampowered.com/stats/ it looks like the maintenance was finished with little damage done, it only broke an hour ago or so (although I haven't been able to connect for the last 2)

Think its gone beyond maintenance at this point. MW2 keeps coming up and going down, most other games appear to be playable now. Something probably happened requiring more work on the servers.
