I'm honestly sick of every game I play these days is down for maintaince, is something going on with the world?

We asked you if you were done. You didn't respond, so we went ahead with the update.

As funny as that is if there was an update you should have let people know...and not done it in the middle of the day.

It's down for me as well. Would be nice if there was a global announcement about these downtimes in Steam before it happens. Like maybe a message telling us it'll be down the next day and a warning 10 mins in advance. The friends list window just tells me it's lost connection, not that it's down for maintenance like it seems to be - would just be nice to know when it's going down when it's down so often these days.

There are different time zones to yours, updates are usually done when there is the fewest people on.

We assume its down for "maintenance", but with the number of issues in the last few days, seems like they need to fix some hardware or make some serious hardware upgrades

I don't understand why the whole thing should go down as if their data center caught fire or exploded. It seems like they should maintain two separate networks and switch over to the 2nd one when they need to do maintenance on the first, then switch to first and update 2nd.

It goes down entirely too often, and is a problem today in particular because the L4D2 CEVO tournaments are supposed to be happening.

The community/friends are down, which means any game that uses matchmaking such as L4D2 is not playable. Or if I'm in a game with a friend and my game crashes, I can't get back in.

Since last night, I have been having trouble with my connection when playing Left 4 dead. I am able to play in offline mode, but having problems connecting online, and seeing that Left 4 Dead game is "syncing". I have restarted my computer and programs, etc., but to no avail. Do I need to delete a file or reinstall the entire program? I'm at a lost.

Weird in this day and age, that valve havent enough redundancy or common sense to atleast inform users of an impending down time period.

We all understand there is times you cannot predict the future but if it is planned maintanence or maintanence the techs know is going to effect clients i don't see why there is an issue still in the year 2010.

The costs by missed sales would be huge and also the costs involved with tech support responding to questions by new users or older ones who dont realise the issue would be reduced by a simple little pop up stating down for maintanence, we apologise for the inconvenience blah blah..

It would be nice if they would at least separate out the friends list to a different "network" so you at least can communicate with people when everything else is down. Either that or spend a few bucks and run a redundant network so they can work on it without taking it completely offline.

Seriously Valve, this a major fault that you CAN fix. Isn't keeping your customers happy worth a few bucks on the corporate scale? Does the Steam Store go down like this? Does it run on redundant servers? That's what I thought....

Um, right. Why should Valve do it the complicated way and separate all services from each other? Then every individual service needs it's own downtime and maintenance which would make it even more confusing than having the whole service down for one maintenance-period.

Other services like Microsoft's LIVE-Service or the PSN are also fully down when a maintenance occurs.

I'm also having the same problem logging into the store from my client AND from another browser. The client itself has "NO CONNECTION" displayed where it normally display "1 DOWNLOAD RUNNING/COMPLETE" when I'm downloading a new game or update. The NEWS page says "An error was encountered while processing your request: No feeds configured."

Well said. I never thought of that, but now I do, I get a bit annoyed. They dont let the store servers go down, do they? No, because that would stop money comnig in until it was sorted.
I understand that valve are much better than pretty much any other dev when it comes to customer care and after sales support of their products, but when they are always saying that the people come first, yet blatantly show us otherwise just shows they are as liable to lie for greed issues as EA games or Ubisoft are.
But I must say, I havent seen steam down for this long in ages.

This is why large companies (like Valve) run server farms in multiple locations to limit the possibility of complete loss of service to their customers and potentially loosing $. I think Valve overlooks this point because A. games aren't "critical" and B. we're a captive audience.

09-23-2010, 01:25 PM
Nothing is simple i know when it comes to networks or maintanence and synching the news for the clients aswell, but the ball seems to have been dropped in notifying clietns.

Yes you can post msg's in forums but as a client generally speaking they wont or dont have the know how on this approach, especially as gaming is more main stream you tend to deal with alot mroe "simple" people.

A small suggestion is to enable a msg through the steam client or perhaps a msg system in another form *shrugs* there is smart people at valve im sure they could think of other various ways. (Redundancy in off location is a wise start?)

If these clients were in an office and you told them they have to goto a forum to see if the server is down the IT admin would soon be out of a job or being pelted with old windows 95 discs until he or she was black n blue ;-)

Maintenance or not, just need to pick a better time. Theres a reason most isps and other companies do maintenance in the early morning hours to deal with less disruption of service.

I would rather deal with whatever performance issue there is, versus unannounced repeated downtime

We have no reason to be angry. All we need to do is wait, be patient, and stay calm.

As a fellow software engineer, I know that decisions like this, to bring a large server farm down, is not something you'd do unless it's considered necessary.

I respect the people who work at Valve, you're doing a great job. I trust that you know what you're doing. Keep the server farm down as long as you need to in order to fix the performance issue.

And to all of you raging over this or any other downtime for any reason: Shame on you. If it weren't for the guys at Valve, you'd never have an awesome service like steam really is.

w0bbl3r
09-23-2010, 01:31 PM
Yep, can confirm steam is now working again. Good job guys, I knew you wouldnt keep me waiting too long.
And to all the haters; try running your games if they NEVER updated the servers.
It is annoying sometimes, yes, but it has to be done, I suppose. Lets just all stop whining now and get back to having some fun with our games, eh? (I include myself in the whining, because I was a bit peeved this time, as it is peak time here in the UK and they dont usually do this until the early hours)

Steam is having problems at the moment, just wait some more time, it should be fixed soon.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. I didn't know what was going on. Like I said before, I would go into Left 4 Dead, but when looking for games online, it would say that there were no games available, either for Versus or any other, and it wasn't listing any friends that were online. Then I would go to the Left 4 Dead game page, and it said "Left 4 Dead - syncing". I had problems before connecting, and someone suggested that I should delete the clientresgistery blob file. Hopefully it will be up soon again.

When I get a game that shows syncing (usually, it's a MP game like Left 4 Dead, where I was in the game when Steam Connection was lost) . I find that it's quicker to exit steam and restart it, to remove that message.

Although, I do have to wait until Steam completely exists from Task Manager's Processes, list. Or it tells me that I can't run two instances of Steam...

Yeah your right.. We wouldn't have places like Direct2Drive, where you CAN play the games whether their service is down or not. The only thing valve does right, is control how and when we play games. You right though, we should rejoice.

I saw a couple l4d2 threads about the downtime. New users trying to download their newly purchased l4d game but can't due to the downtime, but they don't know about it prior to posting on the forums.

What about those that don't care for going on the forums? Was it a bad idea to schedule this maintenance so close to the DLC release and sale of l4d2? Could valve lose users out of this because they think Steam is a pos and won't download l4d2 for some other reason?

Discuss. (I wasn't sure if this should go in here or in a new thread so, Mods, do with as you like.)

Aye, no warning, I deleted a load of files in the steam folder to try and get it back working and almost re-installed steam. Come on guys, it's basic customer service. Let people know when a service they are paying hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for is going down, and make damn well sure they bloody well know it.

A file I edited means I can't even play the games I do have single player until the servers come back on because now it thinks I don't even own the games, it just says "pre-load complete" and I can't play them, only purchase them, even though I've owned them over a year.

Just to point out that there was an announcement also posted on the Steam news section a number of days ago (which a number of third party sites picked up on) along with the Steam support site. I am well aware that some users may still consider this not sufficient - but the news did not only go out via this forum as is being suggested.

A suggestion would be to always check the Steam support site or the forums when experiencing issues with Steam first, rather than going ahead and deleting files in your Steam installation and the like.

ender, It's not "whiny" It's a customer being dissatisfied with a poor level of service from an organisation in which they have invested in and expect a higher level of service. It's not too hard to make a news announcement about the downtime in steam, which I would have definitely seen, and now in a part of the forums which I very rarely visit.
I strongly advise you never start up a business if that is your approach to customer care, because you'll be broke after a week.

In future, valve, make sure that your customers know what is happening with the service you provide. Steam has already got a reputation of being unreliable, I don't want to be any more embarrassed than I already am when somebody with an Xbox360 says that I am playing on an unreliable platform. I mean... Seriously.

Sierra, I understand you're looking out for Steam and whatnot... But if the announcement was enough, I and hundreds (thousands?) Other users wouldn't have felt left in the dark about it. One of those annoying pop-ups (That valve usually use to advertise an awful game like TF2 getting a stupid hat, or something.) might have actually been useful, this time.

I am not looking for a way out - I will be the first to welcome some sort of a "Global Announcement System" via the Steam friends system or the like before scheduled maintenance occurs. Oddly enough in the past couple of years of using steam I haven't experienced a downtime before (Must be too busy, having a life and whatnot, just kidding, I musta been lucky since I have spent 99% of the last 2 years on steam...) so I didn't even realise it was a downtime, thought there'd be some kind of... message, or pop-up, saying there was a downtime... The first place I did go actually was the News tab, to see if there was anything about it there, but it wouldn't load.

Which is really odd. The store page and all the games pages load fine, so you can still shop (but not purchase, I guess) during the downtime, but the news (Much easier to make work during downtime) doesn't show during downtime at all...

They'd rather know that customers can spend their cash during a downtime than know that there customers can get hold of knowledge.... Gah.

And instead a popup, how about something like this:

Sorry, I guess I should have stressed the fact that when I say " . . . that the news did not only go out via this forum" I mean the Steam User Forum's as a whole - I am referring to the fact that the news was also posted on the Steam Store website alongside the Steam support website.

I think it's more of, making sure customers don't LOSE their cash during the downtime. For example: A customer purshases the Steam pack at the exact moment the downtime occurs.

Also, I don't think theres been a scheduled downtime this drastic in a long time.

Walking up a hill and throwing my £35 into the air would have been a better use of £35 then that game. Agreed. Also if the downtime is going to last longer than an hour, Steam should send a bottle of Jack Daniel's (Or the person's liquor of choice, or even food items for those non-drinkers) to all customer's houses before the downtime so that they have something to do. :)

Maybe doing this on a federal holiday was a bad idea....I know not everyone is american, but really, you're based in America, and you know the majority of your customers are American (because we're all fat lazy SOB's). Maybe Sunday would have been a better choice, or another time when the vast majority of your clients will not be off of work/school. I'm in Germany right now (in the Army) and so I'm off, and this hit me at 1pm which sucks lol. But it's what? 8 or 9am eastern US time right? Quite a few people are waking up and trying to get onto their games right now and not able to.

And how much code would it be to have it say a message in that stupid log on pop up where you advertise games most of us have no desire to purchase when you are planning on doing downtime? I mean, I know I generally just close it but if it said Scheduled Downtime in big letters I'd actually take the time to read it. I've been reading the forums off and on for a while now (since I bought TF2 and L4D) but I never even realized there was a downtime thread here. I'm sure the vast majority of users don't look at the store if they're not interested in buying a game at that time, and they don't look at the forums.

my friends list currently reads "No network connection could be made to the Steam Servers.Steam will automatically retry connection until the service becomes available."

I think it would be a really good idea if this actually read that the servers are under maintenance, so that the users know that the problem isn't on their end.

i live in belgium and i bought my copy in the Media Markt, saw it at the price, so i thought "why the hell not, its only 5 euro's", no sale going on btw, they sell games at low prices often.

forgot to add: its extreme conditions.

That's because of all the US Military Members stationed in Europe and their sons. lol

I would say a higher percentage of their population maybe, but I would wager that there are more actual people that play games in North America, again falling back on my theory of us being fat lazy slobs that will go into debt just to get a new graphics card. And what do you classify a gamer? Those of us that are so addicted to games that when there is downtime we're on the forums? Or those that casually play and probably won't even notice this downtime ;)

Planned Downtime on Monday October 11th

Beginning at 4:00 am Pacific time Monday October 11th, we will be performing software maintenance on the Steam servers. We expect the resulting downtime to last four hours, putting the end of the window around 8:00 am Pacific time.

Some Steam services will be offline during this time. Affected services will include the Steam Community, in-game matchmaking or lobbies, downloading games from Steam content servers, and making purchases from the Steam store. Games that do not rely on Steam matchmaking services should remain playable.

We will work to make this downtime as short as possible. Thank you for your patience!

omg, when will they start the servs?

If there's a big problem there's a chance it'll overrun and since it's a 4 hour downtime it's going to be a big workload... Therefore, if something goes wrong it's likely to cause a big problem and therefore extended downtime.

So, in answer, when the downtime is actually complete...
