Ok ladies:
all servers are now boot into the online mode. Some need more time - some needs lesser...

the 10 AM update just tell us, that on 10 AM EVERY server will working fine - friends or community servery are OF COURSE smaller than download-servers or game servers.
So: OF COURSE, the (for example) game and/or downloadservers need more time!

You DO realize that's exactly what we thought an hour ago?

Nothing works yet. No shop, no games, no community, nothing.

I can't believe we support Valve so much by buying games from Steam, and we don't even have access to them.

Waiting since I returned from school to play a game. And now there's a two-hour delay. How disappointing.

This is freaking ridiculous. Valve needs to learn to plan. It's a dumb day to do this, a dumb time to do this, and they can't even plan the amount of time it's going to take.

I love this freaking crap. You pay for a game, but can't use it because they've elected not to make it available. The 4 hours was pushing it, but it's going to be 6 hours, and then some more because it will take time for the 2.5mil + users to connect. We'll probably knock steam down again.

Neeko_Shinigami
10-11-2010, 09:42 AM
East Coast USA - I was up for about 10 minutes, now completely down again. *sigh* Patience is a virtue... too bad I have to leave in 20 minutes.

djsatane
10-11-2010, 09:43 AM
We know the revised completion time was posted, but that was revised from a revised time hour earlier, which basically means nothing at this point since they can just keep revising it every hour.

Its maintenance, why dont people understand that?

Just have some patience, im sure you can do without video games for a few hours.

This is looking to be a 6 hour downtime, and it isn't even about the video games in some cases. Steam is a big platform that a lot of people use. In downtime standards, I'm sure a lot of people would agree that 6 hours is unacceptable. What if GMail went completely down for 6 hours?

I think you need to train your interpretation skill. They never said it will down for exactly 4hours.

This it what they wrote.

Beginning at 4:00 am Pacific time Monday October 11th, we will be performing software maintenance on the Steam servers. We expect the resulting downtime to last four hours at most, putting the end of the window at 8:00 am Pacific time.

See, they say 4 hours, this is 6 hours.

It's great this I pay for a game and then have a 3rd party application that should not be required to play the game, tell me I cannot play it because Steam is currently down for maintenance.

When will game developers realise that Steam is not worth it and stop making games a Steam exclusive so that they can dictate when, and when we cannot play our games all because VALVE say we will give x amount of money if you make the game require our POS.

In the UK and still down for me can't play any of my games that require steam, not even single player games work including Half Life 2.

Thank's Valve for showing how we should all trust you when you cannot even get your server's up and running in the time you say it will take!

here are 2 versions about this downtime:

1)
I heard Big PAPA (Gabe) dissapeared with pretty big cake in his hand, this is the reason, why steam will not never ever more work. Valve workers are stealing things in offices right now. So what will do? Steam forums will be off soon too. What disaster happend?

2)
Valve just finished and uploading right now HL2 - Episode Tree (yea, not three, but tree! They just changed the name by long work on it and a lot of programers got firmly established in their offices xD) and we all will get it for free, cos we are awesome customers.

why do we need steam to play online, i remember it wasn't too long ago that games didn't need steam. they had a game server search in them. so why can't our games be like that? another thing that steam does is the updates, they release them on friday and then go home and the public have to put up with the doggy update till it's fixed on the monday and updated that night. oo plus if you do get the update and it's ok. well the servers have to rebooted and a lot of the servers are remote hosted and guess what? they won't be back till monday too. so we lose a lot of the servers has well. i just don't see the need for steam. it'd be different if steam was an os and ran your pc at all most full power just for games, a kind of dual boot system and took out the need for windows all together. but it's just a store that blackmails us into viewing their "great deals of the week" or else we can't load up or play online. can anyone tell me why do we need steam? apart from "coz we do or we can't play online"

Yeah forget about gaming today and forget about being able to play Black Op's if this is anything to go by.

Valve are such a big company but they cannot even get there maintenance done in 4+ hour's just show's how much of a joke they are.

Yes as you can tell I don't like Steam but I am forced to use to play games, only to have them dictate to me when and when I cannot play my games.

True they both do similar thing's but for communicating and video recording Xfire is better, for something that does the same minus Video and also allows you to buy games then Steam is better.

I hardly think my first post makes nearly as much a damning impression as your repeated cries to play games because of an extended downtime.

And thats WRONG, again!
First: I accept your opinion. Ok? Ok!

But: you talking sh.it - like the other guy...

xfire would be compareable with MAYBE HLSW... and thats all...

steam was the first - is the biggest - and most commercial gaming-client ever..... its not only a "server-video-blah-whatever" client.
Its a all-in-one program.. so - and this is 100 percent FACT: you CANT compare them. Dont take them both into ONE sentence.
Its - and i think the most ppl will agree with me -> RIDICULOUS!

We bounced once as Steam was coming up just after 0900 PDT, as we found a bug which would have prevented us from sustaining the day's normal load. After fixing that, we restarted Stem and we're up to our normal user load for this time of day.

I believe this to be the last visible, negative effect of our server upgrade work. I'm sorry the downtime took a bit longer than we had originally estimated.

Ya know guys, I really tried to give Steam a second chance after my initial horrible experience with Red Orchestra (that was the game where they tried a new approach to third-party game content and .ncf storage drivers which would fail to load... resulting in repeated problems launching the game for the first months).

Okay, so I want to give it another chance, and buy Just Cause 2. It arrived today. The initial steam client setup is slow and lots of updates filter down, so only after 10 or 15 minutes can I actually start installing. And then of course I couldn't activate it for multiple hours because the Servers are "down for maintainance". So I'm wasting my careful kept-clear gaming evening, with the GF not at home and no neighbours complaining, I waste this precious time not playing but looking at a website telling me the status of the Steam server (by now, I have installed the game, though).

While I realize this was a unlucky coincidence, it simple yet again reinforces my opinion that my gaming time is too precious to be put under the command of a big multinational company and server infrastructure.

I appreciate the idea to announce downtimes in advance and I see they are trying to be transparent with it, but really - nothing is more annoying to my feelings as a customer when a new game arrives (long gone release day, too) and the servers are down.

The irony of course is that there's a perfectly working cracked copy of JC2 out in the wild which doesn't bother the damn pirates even one minute with slow installation or activation problems.

You are very unlucky and you shouldn't really blame Valve/Steam.
This is the longest maintance I have ever seen and I have been activetly on Steam since 2006 and the usual downtime for maintances is 5-10 minutes and I think the longest before this 4+2 hours was 1 or maybe 2 hours but only seen one or two really long maintances myself.

And I think they warned about mainance on... Friday? Thursday? here on forums.
Not sure if on the Steam client/store/news pop-ups since I don't really keep looking at those and rarely get news pop-ups anymore lately.

The downtime is officially over... still can't connect to steam/play my games

The ClientRegistry.blob in the root Steam directory (C:/Program Files/Steam/ClientRegisty.blob) is what is preventing connection.

Delete it and start steam, it forces steam to update and fix the file. I'm goin to play now

Good ol' ClientRegistry.blob, the root, and solution to all our steam related problems ;)

Please note that this thread is for the discussion of Steam-wide downtime. If you're having an issue with a specific feature of Steam not caused by downtime or maintenance, you're best off opening a thread in the appropriate area of the forum. The posts about TF2 item trading being inaccessible, for example, are off-topic here and belong in the TF2 trading forum (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1502994).

I've also taken the time to delete some off-topic posts.

Just click on the "Time Zones..." buttons on each line, and you'll be ready to go.
