Steam logged me out, and then decided that my password was invalid. I tried to change my password, and couldn't. Is this related to the downtime or what?

Oddly enough after this downtime was over, I have been unable to launch my games.. it gets stuck on preparing to launch ( that small window that gives you an option to cancel )

Will be trying a restart ( again ) and verify cache but this seems really strange that I suddenly can not seem to play my games, never had this issue before. Makes me think Valve screwed something up.

Wow, this was... wow.

First off, was this patch SO critical it HAD to be deployed in EST prime time?

Chat, game lobbies, and the community web site will be affected.

Yep, seems pretty critical.

Content downloads and game play should not be affected.

Oh really? Seems like most games, in fact, were effected. Why am I paying for games that you guys only let me play at YOUR leisure? Pretty screwed up...

The one downside of doing that is you still have to keep a close eye on your email. I've been subscribed to that thread for months and they have a really bad habit of updating the thread too close to maintenance so subscribing that way only makes it easier to verify it is in fact Steam going down for maintenance and not just your own connection.

Calm down, people. Valve is an extremely competent company. Things like maintenance are normal in any server. Just wait a bit, get some fresh air, read a book, watch some porn, and then everything will be back sooner than you can think. Gaming is not the only thing in life, friends.

Valve has succesfully converted to another Activision/EA since the release of the uber update in TF2, maybe later. They are worse, actually, servers go down a lot more, they won't upgrade them (or buy more, Chuck forbid they're running steam on anything less than the best blades out there), and they only care about money. I just can't wait what they'll do with DotA 2. P2W heroes?

Dear Valve,

When there's a spike of posts in the downtime thread about Steam being down, talk to us.

Ironically, I got a database error and I've had to type this again, very poor show Valve.

Also, when you do have scheduled downtime, you might want to change your bog standard: Content downloads and game play should not be affected.

With the increasing amount of games that rely on a connection to Steam being present, the message is out of date and therefore pretty useless.

Ok... seems steam's down here... at least it still lets me connect to my account (no online features avaliable obviously), but that means they seem to have inprooved the offline mode, hurray! Never had many issues anyway, maybe 2 or 3 times where I couldn't connect to my account.

Anyway, hope it doesn't last much, as trying to test my maps and waiting for portal 2 to check if it can synch. with cloud is rather annoying after a coupple of times...

Well, not everything is as bad... they're improoving the servers so hopefully many people will be able to download faster now, so it's worth the wait.

I really must comment about the frequency of these sudden disconnections.
It really is not acceptable for a commercial platform like Steam to have so many problems with their service, especially when it inconveniences paying customers.
May I may this comment to MikeBlaszczak.

Please look to Facebook as an example of how a commercial platform can sustain a high percentage of uptime world-wide.

NO CONNECTION with Steam in the Netherlands, been going online, offline, online, offline etc... If you're going to take the servers offline keep them offline stop messing with it.

Also a little notice in the Steam client(or a pop-up box similar to the friends logging in) that tells us when the server will go offline would be good - like a 60 minute notice or something.

You guys need to listen to the community; we put food on your tables!

I'm in Eastern Europe and Steam looks down from here. Disappointing. I've been getting some strange behaviour lately so I tried reinstalling Steam before looking for a solution, and it seems to have taken the entire Steam folder with all of my games and all my custom L4D2 campaigns with it. Ouch. That's not what it did last time I uninstalled it.

Funny thing is, the old copy could connect to the Store and my Library, at least. The new installation refuses to let me past the login screen, saying Steam is having trouble connecting to the Steam servers.

What got me worried was the "Downtime" thread seemed to suggest that the downtime should be over.

Same here. First downtime I saw this week. For a gigantic service with over 5 000 000 concurrent users playing over 1700 games, Steam's downtimes are short and rare.

Still, I feel like downtimes were even more rare in 2009-2010. Steam clearly needs upgrade servers in preparation to 6 000 000 milestone.

A major financial institution not allowing people access to their own money is definitely comparable to a free game management platform breaking for a short time. I mean, both companies deal in equally urgent fare (all of a person's money/some of a person's video games) and have access to the same kind of finances and manpower.

ONLINE BANKING is only a small product of the finacial institution, Steams servers are the main product of their buisness. and they certainly have a larger client base than my bank.

A warning system using steam pop ups would be glorious and make downtimes a little less confusing/frustrating. Having it disconnect mid-conversation with someone, or more importantly during games with no warning is unacceptable in my opinion :(

I am in Oklahoma City, and the severs for us are in Dallas. AND THEY ARE STILL DOWN!!! I JUST WANNA PLAY MW3! For the love of all things pure and beautiful, this is awful. I am a customer service agent for a financial institution. If our Online Banking goes down for ten minutes, then our customers are calling in with their pitchforks and torches. People move their money to other banks, and the CEO personally delivers the pink slip of Termination to the techs himself. Our Online Banking isn't the main product and it still gets this treatment. This is all Steam is and it goes down for hours on end and nobody at valve cares to see our reaction and take the neccessary steps to fix this. I don't know about you guys, but I am definitly going to begin considering a new method of purchasing games. (i've been here a while too).

Then find new method, stop ♥♥♥♥♥ing and go away. Valve updates current status here : http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784745&page=25

Um... The people who are whining about playing games... You know you can still play them, right? Just not online (and you can live without online for another hour...)

I can't play GTA IV. Says can't connect to key server. You can't play all offline games, which is not ok. Especially since I already entered the key. I don't really care, but that's not the point.
