View Full Version : Steam Downtime Discussion Thread

You compared a person's expectations of their car to the expectations they should reasonably have of their Steam platform. Your justification for this comment was that you, personally, don't have a lot of trouble keeping your car operational, thus Valve should have no trouble keeping their servers operational. If this has confused anyone, myself included, it's because it's dumb.
Anyway, I'm right there with you. I'm pretty angry about this, and also like you, I'm passing the time by giving people crap about the stupid ♥♥♥♥ they're saying in this thread. The only difference between us is that you're a mechanic and I'm a logic student.
Jesus F*ck stop arguing over non-sense, this thread is for Steam Downtime discussion, not some dumbasses fighting with no reason. If you are really enjoying your fight, PM each other, please don't spam here. Kthx.

THIS IS WHY I HATE STEAM,
ONE THING IS BROKE = CANT PLAY ANYTHING
You hate Steam yet I'm guessing you use it on a regular basis....
You have to remember the positives before highlighting the negatives.
it has come back online for very brief periods. No more then 1 or 2 min for me. Hes just getting excited and posting the second he sees it.
Exactly.

Seriously, you are all acting like servers are ALWAYS down.

again, seeing as there's nothing to actually "discuss" in this thread, because whining about downtime doesn't help, whining about whiners doesn't help, and going "OMFG IT'S ONLINE GUISE" while it's not doesn't help either, and that's pretty much all that's going on in this thread, we should now use it to SPEND THE TIME BEFORE THE STEAM IS BACK UP.
and as such I present you:
1. savor every second of Zack Hemsey - Redemption (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzgYqiOjc4Q), till the very end
2. you now feel like a GOD and forgot about the downtime completely
3. while empowered like this, go make love to your girlfriend or wife (or at least kiss your mom on the cheek duh)
4. !!!!!!!
5. BENEFIT
THIS IS WHY I HATE STEAM,

My point (if you read my previous posts and actually understand them) was that If I Pay for a game that is advertised with cloud and the ability to contact online friends, then i expect those features available to me. Where you got the idea that I thought i knew how to manage servers i don't know, but nvl, I DO expect them to manage them.
As for the last point, do you not consider what they are doing right now as managing the servers? Or would you rather they just let the servers atrophy into a state of uselessness?
Regardless, I know where you're coming from. You paid so you want what you paid for. But the thing is that those features are available to you; just not immediately. There are quite a few parallels in the real world that make sense. Take this as a(horrible) example: you bought a burger from McDonalds. They took longer than 5 minutes to get your burger out to you. "I WANT MEH BURGER RIGHT NAO WITH EVERYTHING IT SAID IT HAD ON IT WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
The time scales are different; don't go saying that it's closer to McDonalds not giving you your burger for an hour, because the two services work on different time scales.
Surely understanding that they are performing maintenance for your sake is a good enough reason to not mind waiting? (If you argue that last point, then you're arguing that Steam is only going down to spite you, and that they are trying to keep you from playing your games intentionally, which is crazy talk! :p)
In short, they are doing what needs to be done.

Call it what you want but Steam down for close to two hours isn't providing service that's a fact. All that link above states is working on "inter-server communication" not a very technical explanation. :(

There are only a few downsides to the steam service being unavailable.
1. Can't use friends list.
2. Can't backup and restore/install games
3. Can't use Steam trade.
YOU CAN STILL PLAY ANY GAMES YOU HAVE INSTALLED. There's nothing much to complain about unless you're a hardcore trader or you haven't installed the game you want to play.
Sheesh. You guys are a bunch of whiners.
Or you have you have paid for items in "Free to play Games" that you can't use. Please go troll on another thread if it does not affect you.

Still down for me too. Can't connect to Steam servers. Why does this happen so often? Not really and most of the time they post scheduled maintenance downtime and what it will effect in the scheduled maintenance thread. I think this was unscheduled as I subscribe to that thread and haven't gotten any thing today from them.

Pretty sure I heard someone tell me Valve are having money troubles. They can't afford the rent lol..
I don't think so - especially since Valve makes an absolute ton of money from the sales. I mean they get a fair cut and it doesn't cost very much to host the games files per person that purchases.

Most people that aren't IT professionals have ZERO clue about what it takes to run an enterprise the size of steam's. I'd say steam meets a 99% uptime no problem. These minor little 1 or 2 hour outages suck, granted, but at the end of the day, when you average them out over the total number of hours in a year, it's nothing guys/gals.
hehe, I will say this, perhaps steam should upgrade it's website from an old school $300.00 vBulletin pre-fab website to something kick-♥♥♥ and custom like Origin. ;) (totally j/k)

I think in the end the point is Steam infrastructure isn't providing a timely service and hurts their brand. The improvements and updates are agreements they have with Activision not the end user so lets keep that in mine. Steam being down is a problem rather intentional are not since they are a service provider. There should be more effort on Steam Infrastructure to provide better service and as a customer that is what majority of us are asking for is better service delivery.

Having been a Network and Systems Engineer for the last 13 years for companies like Capital One and such...I can tell you definitively that Steam has a pretty solid SLA (Service Level Agreement) that they meet. They are a growing company and experiencing growing pains.
The only reason people are freaking out is because when they sit down to use a product that they paid for, they feel as though they should get to use it. I can't say I disagree with that logic, but at the end of the day, if you didn't read the EULA when signing up for steam, that's on the individual and NOT on steam. Steam is a cloud based service that relies solely on the internet. Period. If you don't want that to be the case, purchase your games from a retail shop, install them locally and have a good day right?

Surely understanding that they are performing maintenance for your sake is a good enough reason to not mind waiting? (If you argue that last point, then you're arguing that Steam is only going down to spite you, and that they are trying to keep you from playing your games intentionally, which is crazy talk! :p)
In short, they are doing what needs to be done.
I wouldn't mind if there was an actual marked improvement over how things were before. Steam still blinks out, still drops me from games in the middle of play, and still freezes my game overlay up in the middle of play. When I think 'stability improvement' I think it would affect at least ONE of these things. Its just disappointing to see my waiting rewarded with a whole lot of nothing.

You're wrong on both counts. Every system of servers has downtime. Service is being provided as well as can be expected.
Since this will happen with any network, the "brand" is not hurt. You are implying that there is a possible alternative service that has less downtime than steam. Please find any server network with zero downtime, then get back to me.

I guess when you buy a game and can't play it for 2 hours at no fault of your own then that's were some lose patience. I try not to judge or harbor any ill will on anyone. Yeah I totally agree on the DRS (Disaster Recover Site for the lay person). DRS is pricey, and hard to justify for a lot of companies, but when it comes to being a true Service Provider like steam I think it's absolutely necessary.
The one thing that speaks volumes is the fact that these guys are still using vBulletin...and the version they run is years old. If that's any indication as to the level of hardware they run, then these downtimes I fear are destined to happen more often than not. Hence the need for a DRS :)

Honestly, if you want to talk about this sort of thing "hurting Steam's brand" (which is something people have been saying) the biggest damage is the impression threads like this give of the platform's user base. Forcing us all onto the forums to play together really isn't making anybody involved look good.

I think most mythic items are better than godly.
I just heard that there are certain expensive Godly items better than Mythic and that if I'm going to get Mythic, I should get the best of the best. Can't complain with that, I'll buy some really good Godly stuff to keep me going and if I ever play Nightmare mode, I'll need that Mythic stuff. XD

Didn't someone say these problems should be handled in a hour? Looks like we are dealing with Valve time here....
Please people do not say go to do something else. To play games (on steam) is a routine thing to do for me after work. Otherwise no other thing to do. I should probably take my ps3 out of box.

Is the downtime really getting worse? I've only noticed problems with steam: today, and last month sometime. That's it in recent memory.

Imagine a world where valve wasn't incompetent.
Imagine a world where Steam actually lost customers for all this rampant downtime, where there were consequences for their failure to maintain a consistently functioning service.
Maybe then they've give a ♥♥♥♥.

What's the point of offline mode if I can't play any games when the service goes down?
put offline mode on every night before you turn off your pc and there you go, works for me every time, but make sure you test it before you shut down your pc, that should help you.
The best of best mythic weapon needs to be purchased with cash. If converted to mana, should be around 20 billion mana.
