Imagine a world where valve wasn't incompetent.

Imagine a world where Steam actually lost customers for all this rampant downtime, where there were consequences for their failure to maintain a consistently functioning service.

Maybe then they've give a ♥♥♥♥.

but they do.

it's obviously quite a problem, considering this is the first time I've seen steam down for more than half an hour in months.

put offline mode on every night before you turn off your pc and there you go, works for me every time, but make sure you test it before you shut down your pc, that should help you.

Yeah, do this in order to play offline mode without getting an error message because you have no internet before playing in offline mode.

Makes perfect sense.

For those of you who didn't have the chance to login before the crash

By creating/editing steam.cfg (in the same directory as the steam executable) with the following lines works:

BootStrapperInhibitAll=enable ForceOfflineMode=enable

this will enable steam to launch in offline mode, without the need to having to login first

problem is, almost all the new games go through STEAM and with all the advertising etc, there's hardly no mention (ok, small lettering) of the Steam requirements, although most people know, and you don't really have a choice.... or should I say, there's little competition, if any..... so that leaves little incentive for high quality of service... or perhaps they just outgrew themselves....

Dead Aim
01-04-2012, 11:11 AM
I think it would've been better if they've made it a 24 hours of downtime .Just to make gamers aware of the problem so they don't end up getting frustrated every time they are forced to go offline.
Or at least they should've said that the servers might go down at this range of time.

All what i'm saying is telling us the truth is better than false promises .

how I keep seeing how everyone get mad when either steam loses connection, or you lose internet and you can use steam in offline mode. ok now MOST of the time if you put steam into offline mode when you are done with you pc and are shutting it down, and test it to make sure it goes though then no matter what happens (losing net, steam goes offline, or whatever) your steam is in offline mode, and near all of your games work. if you guy would do this, steams offline mode does actually work, and quite well too.

Hope this helps people.

ps Happy Late New Year

Yeah I totally agree on the DRS (Disaster Recover Site for the lay person). DRS is pricey, and hard to justify for a lot of companies, but when it comes to being a true Service Provider like steam I think it's absolutely necessary.

The one thing that speaks volumes is the fact that these guys are still using vBulletin...and the version they run is years old. If that's any indication as to the level of hardware they run, then these downtimes I fear are destined to happen more often than not. Hence the need for a DRS :)

I'm in the UK and STEAM is still completely broken.

It would be OK if the off-line mode actually worked properly. And the games I want to play actually supported off-line mode correctly (instead of simply hanging on start-up).

Once again the pirates have the better product.

All what i'm saying is telling us the truth is better than false promises .

What most people don't realize, is you will NEVER know truthfully what happens on the backend server farms. Much like any PR campaign, they do damage control. This simply means that rather than admit someone "fat fingered" something and screwed up a deployment, or something of that nature, they will say "We are doing emergency maintenance" or "There's something wrong on the back-end".

This is all "engineer-speak" for "DAMMIT! We screwed it up again!". I should know, I fat finger something about once every 6 months in my datacenter :) And we tell our customers similiar garble...

LOL, I'm stuck with FEAR3 endlessly trying to sync as I was playing when Steam went down and didn't realize that until I quit. I wonder if it will properly finish syncing once Steam comes back on line?

It should, yes, as it's not so much FEAR3 doing it, but the Steamworks system itself. It'll contain the latest stuff into the local cache and upload or "sync" when it's back online.

Just my understanding of how it works, may not be 100% right though.

I suppose instead of reply trolling I'll say something pertinent.

Firstly, my credentials: I am a disabled veteran formerly working in the US Air Force with computer networking and workgroup management.

In any system, no matter how small and simple, or large and complex, things can go wrong. A patch being rolled out could create conflicts, or heck, even a piece of hardware can die, despite precarious maintenance and preparation. Regardless of how large a company may be, taking care of something like that does take time, from getting a replacement, recoding a conflict, or even installing new parts and testing them to make sure the problem is resolved, it requires a fair bit of patience.

Granted, the average mentality of a service user tends to be one of entitlement (once again, military background talking), and these thoughts do tend to get overlooked or completely ignored.

Need something to do? Have a drink, relax, smoke a cigarette (if that's your thing) or hell, call a friend and go out and socialize. If you're in the US and on Steam at this hour, you're either self-employed, unemployed, or off work today.

Well said, my friend. People also need to consider Valve are hurting as much as we are, think about the amount of money they have lost over this downtime when they could have been selling products and such, downtime is a very expensive process and they are obviously working their hardest to fix it.

The people that are working on fixing it could keep us updated on their progress of fixing it dont you think? And yes I do. The "within an hour" post was a estimation, which turned out to not be the case, and that post was made 1hr 40 mins ago.

A new, updated, more accurate estimation could be made and posted now one would think..

My guess is that they are doing account and connection pruning. Empty accounts that have been inactive for a long time, but still are online and connected to Steam, waste bandwidth. The prolonged downtime might timeout some of them.

As for some other accounts... Well, how some people exploited a recent event would explain that. :p

I've been trying to connect to MW3 through Steam and having no luck whatsoever. Steam starts, but when it tries to load MW3, I get a dialog box that says "Steam - Warning. Steam was unable to sync your files for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Multiplayer with the Steam Cloud. If you have played this game from another computer, your game settings and/or progress may not be in sync with what is stored in the Cloud. If you play the game now, you may lose those changes or progress."

It gives me the options to Play Game or Cancel. If I Play Game, it tells me that I am not logged into Steam.

I thought it was just Modern Warfare 3, but it turns out to be happening to all of my games, so I'm assuming that Steam is having issues. Could someone message me to confirm this? Or give me some pointers as to how to fix this.

For the record, I tried restarting steam and restarting my computer before restarting steam. Nothing worked.

While you are correct, the prudent thing to do is to have redundancy. This will take hardware failure out of the equation. Also a test bed for anticipated updates rather than performing such updates on a live system.

This is a good point, and a prudent method, agreed. Unfortunately, things don't always go that way. From having to hotfix things to running deadline rollouts, sometimes things can and do get overlooked. Even when it comes to the machines we make, we're still, only human.

Not too surprised. Their servers always seem to have issues every hour or so. I think it's because their servers cannot handle the traffic as these problems started arising when the user base jumped back in July/August.
I find it a pain when trying to browse the store or the community and I get the 'image could not load' icon everywhere. Oh and the times when the whole page breaks and I get neon blue times new roman text centred on a white background with unloaded images everywhere...

Perhaps I'm missing something but there seems to be a fundamental problem here. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but (broadly) steam provides the following main functions:

1) Purchasing Games
2) Downloading Games
3) Storing Game Config in the cloud
4) "Approving" a game's launch
5) Miscellaneous other stuff like forums, friends, etc...

Some comments:

1) I'm assuming Valve wouldn't allow this to break as it's money - or at least prioritise fixing it. I understand and accept that - they're a business.

2) Downloading has been REALLY slow recently - 4 days to download 14GB? I'd imagine this is also the Lion's share of their bandwidth usage. Since we've just had a sale, it's under strain. This is an inconcenience but not a show stopper.

3) I consider this a nice-to-have - It's handy but I don't personally hop computers often so if it's only up intermittently, it's again only an inconvenience.

4) This is where I've got a problem - I've paid or the game, waited to download it and now I want to play it. This being down is the only thing that really gets me annoyed. Surely a company as large as Valve could implement a system which either uses multiple sites/clusters to failover and stagger releases to prevent downtime? Even if that's too complicated for their back-end, why not allow the client to cache the authorisation for -say- a month?

I know some games simply can't function without the connectivity but most offer single-player functionality and I can't see a valid reason for denying me access while the Valve gnomes tinker with servers. This just seems like a bad design decision.

5) I have to say that while having forums unavailable looks unprofessional, the only reason I use them is to find out why Steam's broken again. Since they're so unreliable (at least whenever I use them), I now use other sources - eg Reddit.

I also think that taking the support site offline is a disgrace - "We've got too many unhappy customers so we're just going to start ignoring everybody" is just not acceptable for almost any other business.

I like most Valve games and have a good level of respect for the company. Steam's certainly better than the competition (when it works) but it seems to be getting pretty unstable recently.

Has anyone ever provided a good reason for why the client is so crippled every time Steam servers die?

I'm really starting to wonder what's causing these issues. I'm tempted to reinstall Steam, but I doubt it would fix anything. It just seems to be every hour or so Steam's webpages don't load properly and it can range from a few unloaded images to a practically broken page.
I'm also hypothesizing that it could be the Steam servers my connection accesses. Perhaps the Canadian servers are poorer than others.

Actually, cloud is still down Steam-wide I believe; restarting does nothing for the moment, but you should be able to play fine with your local saves if you disable cloud saving in the game's properties, or by restarting Steam in offline mode.

It's been preparing for the last 10 minutes by the time of this post. Or any game for that matter. Dungeons loaded but I would figure that's a bit different since it has it's own launcher after Steam.

On a side note, I seemed to have gotten the Dec. 7th update multiple times. I'm not sure if it just decided to not show the proper date or if it didn't get installed correctly or something. Even had trouble syncing Steam as I closed it =/ Internet's fine all around btw.

Does it works if you just choose to go offline from the client while online? you need to do that for it to work...
also you can try to create a file called steam.cfg in the steam folder and paste this in that file:

BootStrapperInhibitAll=enable
ForceOfflineMode=enable

this should force offline mode (if steam doesn't need to update some .blob file or something)

Quit out of steam when the cloud was breaking earlier. Now I can't log into my account. Steam just crashes after it accepts my password. I can log in online fine, and I can log into my old account on steam fine. I just can't get into my primary account on steam.

DRM hurting consumers as usual.

I'm in Germany.

Huh, interesting.

Germany here as well, and it's working perfectly fine.

For instant offline mode, I just put out my Wifi Stick for a sec while starting Steam and Boom, the Client is offering me to start offline, since no network connection has been found.

Still Down? This is getting serious, It's been all day long for me. I should get a free game of my choice or something to compensate me for all the stress this has caused. Everyone affected should get compensated with a free game.

Wow, I love going back and reading the old posts after any downtime of any service, not just Steam. So it was down for a few hours, no big deal. In order to keep things running smoothly and securely, servers and related things need to be taken down once in awhile for maintenance, and sometimes things break. It does happen. Even the most effiecient machines on earth sometimes break down.

Anyways, big ups to Sierra Oscar for keeping us as informed as he could.

Just wondering if anyone is still unable to connect to steam??
My steam was working fine last night. I managed to download half a gig of information before it was suspended downloading. restarteds steam and steam couldnt log in.

Mine says connecting to steam.. then after a while it "could not connect to steam network. this could be due to a problem with your internet connection or with steam network."

Im in canada on vancouver island.

Anyone else from canada or seattle having similar problems??

Any suggestions?

My steam won't synch...at all! Which is VERY annoying since I cannot start any game, it will just stuck at the "Preparing to launch xyz" window. WTF is going on???
And when I try to close steam, it will pop up the usual synching before exit window, but it won't disappear, it will just go on and on...and I can hit the Exit now button but when I restart steam, nothing will change. :S

I'm having similar issues, Rage seems to be the only game that won't actually launch. The rest pop up with a little box saying ready to play with the options of Update News... Play and Close.

Steam does not sync on exit.

and I only want to play Rage

[Edit] Half Life 2 prepares for launch... doesn't load.

Every game stuck at "Preparing to launch". Steam exit stuck at "Finishing Steam cloud sync".
for more than 24 hours now...

Games load instantly in offline mode.
All game files verified.
Login works without problem.
Restart and reboots do not fix anything.

As there is no reaction as of now. I will post now too. All steam cloud enabled games will not start for me either. Games w/o steam cloud do start fine as do all games in off-line mode.
Greetings from Germany,
Tutzelki

P.S.: As there were problems with "inter server communication" yesterday resulting in similar starting problems for me for about 45min it will probably mean another downtime today :D Just guessing :D

Same situation here.

Steam Cloud seems to be out of function (in the List View of Steam all Cloud Icons have a question mark in it) and with it all the games using it. Also Steam isn't able to close properly, cause it is waiting for the cloud to give "its ok".

Hope they can fix this soon.

well. i suppose this downtime is a good enough excuse to go to the gym!

Edit: Oh and valve certainly doesn't need to give anyone anything for free. ♥♥♥♥ happens. also if it works to play offine, just do it! or go out and enjoy the weather ;)
(if when i come back somethings happened with my Dungeon Defender chars i will probably change my oppinion however!)

Hi, it's not working here in north Italy either! Same problem (syncs forever, can't launch games)
It's now two days that it ain't working as supposed. Bad for us, because we only have time to play some games during winter holidays.

Steam Client won't even open for me now. Set it offline mode, and now I've turned the PC back on I set it online mode (unaware of issues) and it won't load up.

Here's what he posted, seems to be helping people.

If you can not start your games.... something i did.

Start steam
go to settings (downloads + cloud)
untick "Enable steam cloud synchronization for games which support it"
shut down steam and wait for the exit now to clickable and click it.

open steam

Go explorer and go to your steam folder

Rename the folder "appcache" to what ever you want

shut down steam

and restart steam

Wait for the pictures of your games load. Could take 1 or more mins.

**AGAIN** untick "Enable steam cloud synchronization for games which support it"

Then you can play games.

The problem has been officially confirmed HERE http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784745&page=25.

It seems to be a hardware failure, so patience is advisable.

But one thing surprises me: everybody's talking about cloud computing, and it shoud be so reliable because of the distribuited server load. But on all cloud computing breakdowns up to now, one failing server always affected the whole network. So, where's the advantage?

The advantage is that when the server will be fixed, everyone will regain their cloud data. If your savegames, settings etc. were stored locally on your computer and this computer suddenly got some serious hardware malfunction, you would loose your data forever.

I say, few hours of downtime is better than lost data.

Right, but on clusters, there should be no longer downtime (hours, days). It should be a seamless transition from one server to the backup server...
We all know, hardware WILL fail...

This is really frustrating. I have all my games in Steam! and for it to go down like this, makes me lose faith in the Steam system. I wanted to play Demolition Inc., but my save is gone. Fine, I'll play some L4D2 as that has no save. Oh wait, that won't load properly. Okay, I'll just play a singleplayer game. Skyrim won't load.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

I replaced a failed network switch in the Steam server rack. This work was completed around 0415 PST and we've been back to normal service since. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the update Mike, question for you please, can I now redo my games categories and they'll save or should I wait?

Edit:
Restarting Steam put everything back to normal.

Two days? It was working flawlessly for me last night... but not now.

Did you notice the drop in active users on yesterday's stats? We were playing the game, and all progress was lost because of this disconnection. And before login an sync issues where also very common. The last few days Steam just didn't work as it shoud have been. Hopefully after holiday season everything will be back to normal again...
