...

How is this a hacker attack? Servers can just fail you know.

they can, but read my post on the front of page 519, its more than likely the culprit of this, since its affecting the really SSL heavy portions of the site.

That doesn't mean it has anything to do with hackers.

Doesn't sounds too good that they used the term "reported outages" on Twitter, something minor would have been fixed by now.

I remember over Christmas when people were defending Steam about all the problems, saying that we should instead be grateful for the coupons and daily deals... What's the excuse this time? Does Valve not have a SLA in place with publishers?

Wow! Thank you!

I agree, I was trolled on for being angry. Also, can I also point out... where are the volunteers now? They were quick to reply to someone previous, but not repsond to "what is the problem" and "how long will this take".

Also with that christmas deal, santa gave me more worth while gifts. Coal? lol yeah 1 coal for all that? I rather of had steam up and running than a piece of coal or two.

Lastly, steam is getting worse. I find origin more stable. Infact even my grandma is more stable than steam/valve.

look up an SSL DoS, it uses up the servers CPU time by trying to establish an infinite number of SSL sessions, over and over.

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Security/Hackers-Release-DoS-Attack-Tool-Targeting-SSL-Servers-868830/

this seems really like the culprit, because steams servers all use SSL.

Oh I see, that could be but what makes you think its a hacker attack?

EDIT NVM I see you answered that somewhere else. I hope its not a hacker attack cause that doesn't seem like a very productive use of hacker's time to prevent all of us from playing games. They should maybe target evil dictators or something instead.

Sure, some can't access steam at all, but for those that can..complaining they can't play "any" of their games.. camman. Lots of games work without Steam friends and the cloud.

(yes some games don't work at all without that stuff, but really..I'm sure we all have other games to play in the downtime that work..instead of complaining.)

CS,CSS,l4d(2),tf2+many more, work fine. Just pass the little "oh noes..can't access cloud sync" warning and click play game..and enjoy.

Hacking steam seems so counter-intuitive. What's with the nerd on nerd violence?

That's what i think too...hackers should maybe not waste their time preventing us from playing games and target like evil scientists or somethings.

Find out and solve the power failure...

You'd know of a power failure at the start, if they have measures in place to inform them. If power failed, one would assume the DC lost power. In which case, a generator should have kicked in. Perhaps they are more lazy in the DC approach in the US.

Ironic, since the UPSes are supposed to prevent this kind of problem, not cause it.

A UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) is bascially a power strip with a built-in battery that charges in normal circumstances. It's supposed to keep equipment going in case of a blackout or if someone accidentally unplugs it, but it looks like here the UPSes themselves borked out and are what stopped supplying power.

For me personally, this is the first time I've ever seen the downtime. Is it really that common?

Yes it is. To me this really is some unwanted software. I'm only using it to play MW3. But since Valve screws everything up again and again, I'm never buying any Steam "powered" game again. Heck, I might even start pirating games. At least, then, you get what you download.

I'm actually not a fan. I think most of their games are mediocre. I just don't fly off the handle at a couple of hours of loss of service.

Then what are you doing here?

I am in the Steam Downtime Discussion Thread. I am venting. I have been with steam for a long time. I have had many downtimes and it is happening far too often. I would like to know how long I am going to have to wait. I will be waiting here for more of your lovely comments :)

Yes it is. To me this really is some unwanted software. I'm only using it to play MW3. But since Valve screws everything up again and again, I'm never buying any Steam "powered" game again. Heck, I might even start pirating games. At least, then, you get what you download.

smh

I sense you made this post just to spark an argument.

the server that handles that could be down as well and thusforth not updating it.

more than that. there was over 5 million online when it went down and started to crash at 10 to 12, so, there is currently 4-5 million people trying to log on at one time.

Let's be hones, Steam is starting to have some problems, every 2-3 days there's an update (this didn't happened last year). Upgrade the damn servers if they can't handle the number of accounts active at any given time. This is ridiculous.

But as soon as there is a little downtime expected or not, some of the community goes bat♥♥♥♥ crazy and jumps on the nearest bandwagon to complain.

Take the 2-4 hours that steam is down and go get some fresh air, hang out with friends, play a console game. It won't kill you to have a little patience.

Please elaborate on what "upgrading the servers" means.

You see, every couple hundred thousand players online at once grants Steam a level up. When you level up you get skill points. With these skill points VALVe puts them into different trees (The Half Life 3 Development Tree is empty), and Server Upgrades are one of the trees.

However VALVe decided rather than use their skillpoints on progressive things like Server Upgrades or say Half Life Three, they have been spent on Gaben Upkeep and Hat Development.

VALVe has made a terrible mistake and by not upgrading their servers they have "Crashed" and having used all of their skill points they have no means of fixing it.

The Crash made it so no one else could log into Steam, making their ability to gain new skill points zero.

VALVe lost the game.

When connection goes down, client side, it goes to "off"
When the steam servers go down, it goes to "off"
When nothing is wrong, it goes to "on"

You're right though... It'd have to be multiple "on/off" indicators for forums, steam servers, friend servers, content servers, etc.

those of you who rage because you can't play a certain game you paid for (when you really can). those of you who think that running the steam servers is easy peasy and valve employees are just full of derp. those of you who ignore over 20 pages of previous posts and ask, "is steam down?". those of you who insist the downtime is entirely ridiculous and disregard the uptime. those of you who think your gabe jokes are funny. and so on and so forth.

i must say, thank you so much for making the downtime lulzy and preventing me from doing something productive, like cleaning my room or doodling. cheers! ;D

I quote every single word, i was about to write a "i'm here with pop corn" post like yours. ;)

You're my Hero of the day. :D

And most of the posts bashing Gabe/Valve.
I've complained about the downtime because I seem to be hit by nearly all the downtime that happens on Steam but I never result to actually insulting them. That's just petty and useless.

oh my goodness! how did i ever forget!

i also adore the absolute geniuses who suggest the fresh, new, completely original idea for valve to announce their downtime on the steam interface (especially those darn unscheduled maintenance and power outages, they should really warn us beforehand!). going to the forum, facebook, or twitter pages devoted to valve/steam is wayyy too complicated in the meantime. cheers to you too!

Did Valve learn nothing from Fukushima?

Concurrent Steam Users:
peak: 5,056,413
current: 25,337 <--- OUCH!

Seriously though, I've had several experiences where a building's backup generators failed when the power grid dropped out. It's not pretty. Yet it still surprises me that this happened to a DATA CENTER, of all things...

I have screenshots and will be blogging on this later today...My friends in the media have already been notified...:)

Call me stupid, but unless the server was running from the UPS in the first place, then why would it matter if it failed?

if the UPS internal fail, it will not push power thru to the equipment. I have one on my modem, router, and desktop, and it failed, basically the same way. we got a power surge, and everything just shut off, and it would not power anything anymore, even on the battery(which showed a full charge). its just how it goes sometimes.

If a UPS, an uninterruptable power supply gets interrupted it's a good sign that it's not uninterruptable. Maybe it's just a hardly interruptable power supply, a HIPS.

Anyways, I'm off to Minecraft.

Says the one who thinks the solution is "upgrading the servers".
Please elaborate on what "upgrading the servers" means.

In case you have problems understanding what upgrade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upgrade) means. Maybe the spelling wasn't quite accurate, was mostly referring to the number of servers that should be increased to hold this larger number of accounts active. The updates Valve have are more frequently than any other service out there and they should do something about that. With a customer base that large they should afford easily more servers and bandwidth.

There have been rumors floating around about the impending demise of the human race. I hate to be the one to bring it to your attention, but this steam outage may only be the beginning of an impending SHTF event...

I suggest that all of you (in the interest of your future well being) immediately stock up on bacon. Get all the bacon you can get your hands on. And if you are running low on light beer and srirachi sauce you might as well grab that too. You just can't be too careful these days...

Update!

Update: Our data center's uninterruptible power supplies experienced a power failure. The power is back on now and we're working to get service restored as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Well at least this topic is being used whenever steam has a problem.

Oh and just FYI, just because a power supply is uninterpretable doesn't mean it's not prone to some or all of the following:
- Snickers
- Only edition of half life: episode 3
- Burning out
- Short circuit
- LIGHTNING BOLTS
- The Darkness
- Coffee / tea / alternative beverages

I work in IT, and if your data center losses power for a large company like Valve then it is time to find a new data center. Unless this power outage is over a day so, or something like a tornado hit the building (or other disaster) then this type of service interruption because of a power failure it inexcusable.

Rollover technology is designed to prevent this type of thing happening, and valve is a large enough company to afford it.
