3. Once you've connected to Steam turn off Hotstop Shield
4. You are ready to go!

This issue occured to me this morning too and now I cannot play any steam game. This is driving me mad.
That's the reason why I sometimes HATE steam. They really should make their offline-mode more reliable. Even the hated ORIGIN can be turned complete offline. This dependency on steam servers is just...unbearable.

Wrong. The games themselves are worth several thousand euros EACH. The licences to the games are worth the current retail price. His account is worth €3,500 because it would cost €3,500 to acquire the licences to those games.

I dont know how much you know about our german laws, but apparently nothing.

The TOS is as binding for germans as it is for americans as long as it doesnt conflict with any laws.

Valve doesnt have to compensate for downtimes and that doesnt conflict with any german law.

If you think it does, why dont you take a lawyer and go to the court? Id like to see how far you would get.

The authentication servers are up and responding whether you try to connect from a non working German IP or working US/UK IPs.

Personally this feels like a mess up in Valves geolocation implementation, that Germans love so much.

In addition I find the statement "login issue affecting some users" a bit insulting.
Out of four people I know of that use different ISPs four are unable to login.

And last but not least, the information policy is really substandard. No ETA, no reasons, no nothing. Someone was mentioning that they better use their time on fixing the problem, instead posting updates.
I disagree, unless Steam is that much understaffed, that the people fixing the problem have to write the updates.
Overall very poor customer service and bad advertisment for this service.

That's well off the beaten track. Steam only has 40 million accounts and the vast majority of them are in the States. There's still a lot of resistance to Steam in Germany, not unjustified as it seems here.

Going to be a lot of accounts though.

Steam stats show 300,000 less steam users online now than at the same time yesterday.... and they probably won't know which accounts tried to connect during the downtime, so they would have to give it to all German accounts.

It is important that people voice their opinion and show that they are dissatified with the service provided. How else would a company know if something is wrong?

However, there is no need to be uncivil about it.

Saying that you cannot log in and that you dislike it is perfectly acceptable. Saying you will stop using the service, become insulting or show a clear addiction isn't going to make anyone move any faster.

That said, I'm unable to log in too right now and would love it to be fixed as soon as possible.

It's possible to connect with a proxy, steam auth servers just drop German connections based on geolocation. So to answer your question: "Use the exact same code you have now, minus the code that drops the connection for German IP addresses".

Seriously, Steam is already violating German laws concerning protection of the youth with many titles.
The only thing they would violate would be the agreements with the publishers for geolocation (to comply with german laws/and enforce regional pricing).

Actually, even years after the first release, the client has still many flaws and crashes rather often.

well it works for me in germany.

use hotspot to lanch steam, then launch game ex. mw3 go online, then close hotspot and continue lagg free gaming. after closing game my stam friend list and library stay online TRY IT

So i dont use auto log in.

If you want offline mode, make sure that steam was shut down regular on its own.


If you follow these steps, you will be successfully locked out of your own account next time when there is a large downtime.

I don't understand all those people saying "oh boo hoo, steam has server problems get over it"

Steam has a Offline Mode which is EXACTLY for this case... however you cannot get into offline mode to play your singleplayer game (skyrim) because steam just crashes with the message everyone else gets.

Everyone with a server suffered from a downtime before and theres no difference to professional enterprise services like valve. I have no problem that I can't play multiplayer games because of server issues.

My problem is that I cannot play Singleplayer games due to a missing offline-mode.

Why invent one and not turning it on?

you are entering a public network which makes the typical 08/15 user a welcome feast for hackers, keylogger and your typical script-kiddie.

now, this does not necessarily have to happen, but the risk is fairly higher than without.
i keep seeing people telling about their 150+ games on their account and while i understand that boredom is unpleasant, you should not risk it to lose all this.

however, those are my 2 cents to the current situation.

Steam is currently unavailable for Steam users in Germany who set their download region to one of the German servers (Frankfurt, Munich for example) - which is a majority. Those who do not shut down their computers are still logged in without problems - and there is a group of people who are actually violating the SSA to log in via tunnelling service (such as hotspot shield), like...
Use VPN, problem solved.

But I believe steam/valve is working on the issues to resolve them as quickly as possible. And they will give an ETA when they know how severe the problems are and how long it will take to fix it.

You can be sure that when we get more information we will let you know. For now, Valve are working hard to resolve the issue. It does not seem to be a problem for all German users but rather a minority of Steam users within Germany.

Hi, can you provide us the source of your information, that only "a minority of Steam users within Germany" in Germany is affected?

None of my German friends are playing, the four people I talked to (differnt ISPs) can't connect, it's all over the news, so I'm just curious.

Perhaps it's because valve basically never gives information to anyone, especially their fans? I'd be surprised if they actually tell us what was wrong in the end.

You know what the most communicated thing from valve to players is?
"This has nothing to do with X so this moves to Y".

When it comes to communication valve is the worst company I can think of. You never get anything out of them. Annoying bug in Team Fortress 2 for months? Hypocrisy regarding german youth protection law? No comment. No response. No nothing.

Fell free to ask valve any question. For example why offline mode isn't even an option at the moment. I saved my login data, played games. So shouldn't it work?

Have fun trying to get an answer. You won't get any. I mean, it's just an issue effecting customers. So why would valve bother to give them any info at all?

I agree with your first point, but have to disagree on the other. Steam is currently unavailable for Steam users in Germany who set their download region to one of the German servers (Frankfurt, Munich for example) - which is a majority.

I can't login, even though my download region is set to the UK, so it must be something else.

Wie können wir mit Steam wieder haben? Weil wir blöd Steam Produkten gekauft haben. Zum Beispiel: Half-Life 2, Couter-Strike und vieles... :(

Also ich für meinen Teil halte es für angebracht wenn wir alle einfach mal in Deutsch weiter posten, damit der Herr Sierra Oscar abrafft, dass hier nicht nur eine Minderheit davon betroffen ist, sich von so einem Kackverein in Bellevue, WA., seinen wohlverdienten Feierabend versauen lassen zu müssen.

Wenn die auf im Verhältniss von Einwohnerzahl zu Steam-Nutzern bezogene größte Steam-Community der Welt, in seiner Gänze, nicht fähig ist den Service zu starten, weil ein paar Kackpratzen in Washington zu dumm sind ihre Arbeit zu machen und beim rumexperimentieren an ihren Servern halb Europa lahmlegen, ist das sicher kein Minderwertigkeitskomplex, sondern schlicht und ergreifend ein Grund in deren Foren zu gehen und mal gepflegt abzukotzen...:D
