It appears, like many others, that I am having issues fully logging in. My client works and I'm downloading the recent update for The Witcher EE, but my Friends list is down and I'm unable to play MW3 right now. Anyone have any ideas for what I should do? O.o

Addition: Never mind, just popped back up.

Add my name to the growing list of Steam users that are pissed off at all this downtime. I would really love to know how you guys managed to make sure all the popups for crap I should buy are always reliable, yet, you can't utilize the same popups to announce downtime ahead of time. Steam has a bazillion users, some stupid thread in these forums just doesn't cut it. I have had Steam for 7 years and this is my first post on the forum. Tells you how useful the forum is, huh?

Just sayin', if you have to hold my games hostage for hours at a time, the least you could do is make a little more effort to announce it ahead of time.

Hey Valve, it may be a good idea to not do maintenance in the middle of peak play time like most companies would do.... Try 3-6am, that would make more sense.

I wonder if their updated schema is going to improve security by isolating data with sensitive information into separate tables and making such tables only readable by specific other systems on the network.

3-6 am is when the peak users start to log in. That would be a bad time to do maintenance, at least right now, there are more people logging off than logging on. Since people who are already logged in stay logged in, maintenance at this time would probably affect the fewest people who are logging in.

Anyone else getting this error? Its only on the steam store, and pulls up the same in the steam client as well as online. US Store btw.

I don't think this is maintenance. It's 3am in Valve's timezone. Maintenance is normally scheduled for 12-14 hours from now.

Whatever it is, it's annoying as hell though.

Well, the time is a point of discussion. Maybe they scheduled some changes in advance to be executed when they think it would least hinder people ? In which case a notification shouldnt be hard to provide.

Or maybe it's steam not saying what the problem really is. Like how 'the steam servers are too busy to handle your request' can mean anything from a nuclear explosion at steam HQ to an unplugged network cable on your end.

In any case, they should have failsafes for their failsafes ffs. We're in a day and age where load balancing is piss easy to do.

Onyx3173
06-03-2012, 03:11 AM
I think they would notify us, especially if it was gonna be at an unusual time. Recently Valve's been pretty good at announcing them at least here on SPUF.

And yes, I agree that they should be able to find some way of having some sort of backup system. This is Valve after all. they have the people to figure it out. And funding shouldn't exactly be an issue either.

Are you REALLY taking that literally? You're that stupid? A cat could understand what he said. Maybe someone has only a few minutes to play a game each day, and 10 minutes could make them decide not to. Lifeless nerds like yourself maybe won't understand, but some people do have lives.

And besides, why are people whining about whining, don't people have the right to whine? Because complaining about something you're also doing is pretty stupid.

B) Even if you want to play a game on Steam, no one stops you from doing it? You have offline mode for that, or if you are already online just launch the game... Please don't tell me you were thinking of playing DOTA 2 or L4D2 or something for 10 minutes...

Thank you both for proving my point. It is my time and I should be able to do what I please with it. If I feel as though I need to use an assistant to have all of my daily activities timed and planned out for me I will let you know. Until that time though I can decide if 10 minutes is enough for me or not and hundreds of different scenarios could be happening to me perhaps I just needed to trade with someone really quick and we both only had this time right now to do it, perhaps I am playing a really simple game and it only was going to take me a few minutes to get the entertainment I was wanting maybe playing for hours is something you can do and is the only way you get satisfaction from your games but this is not true for everyone.

Please don't assume you know what someone else's situation is it makes your look ignorant and moronic to try and put your own set of circumstances onto someone else. And nice try guy as I never said any game so again please don't assume you know what someone else is doing okay...

Indeed. Over 800,000 registered forum users out of how many million Steam users?
Isn't it something like 34,000,000 users on Steam now? That's less than 1 in 34 users that would be getting notified of maintenance. And that's only for those that check SPUF before maintenance occurs and after it's announced.

Cool story, that was an interesting read, but I'd like to know more

Steam WAS actually down for literally ten minutes, as it always is. If you can't re-organise a trade or stand to wait for those ten minutes to play a game, you're ♥♥♥♥ing impatient. I doubt you can plan your own time effectively if you need specific amounts of time allocated to perform your daily tasks.

In short, get over it.

The point is not even steam going down as I have been using it for years and I expect it to happen. It is the fact that people like yourself cannot empathize with the other 30+ million people who might not have your exact situation. And you would rather insult those who do. In short, I'm done talking with jerks.

You don't have a clue by that response.
Also it's down quite often even without the downtime thread Announcements.

Also down for ten mins or even one min When playing games like DD and 2 hours in getting to wave 23+ then kicked because steam goes down is 2+ hours wasted for nothing.

This is maybe the best place to ask this, I'm trying to figure out how to setup a Rainmeter RSS feed of the downtime announcement thread cause I'm tired of only seeing announcements after Steam is already down. However the site only seems to be able to do forums and not specific threads.

Ie: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/external.php?type=rss&threadid=784745&lastpost=1 should theoretically be the url for an RSS feed to the announcement thread. But it does nothing.

However this one gives me a feed for this entire forum: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/external.php?type=rss&fourmid=14&lastpost=1

But I don't want the forum, I just want the one single thread. I can't find anything about how to do it anywhere. Does anyone here have any idea?

I can't find a way to, sorry. How about subscribing for emails instead?

Onyx3173
06-12-2012, 04:27 PM
I already am subscribed by email but the issue is I only check my email once a day. And often I'll miss the announcement by 20 minutes to two hours or so meaning that I won't know about it until after Steam is down.

If I could setup an RSS feed in Rainmeter for the thread I can toss that on my second monitor where I'll be able to easily see it any time I'm at my computer.

Pretty sure VBulletin only allows RSS Feeds down to the sub-forum level.

NeatNit
06-12-2012, 04:40 PM
Understandably this option might not be too attractive for you, but there are ways to get notified of emails immediately. For example for Gmail there is Google Talk (http://www.google.com/talk/) or this thing (http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=9429), other email services have similar ones.

RSS feeds aren't immediate either, you know ;)

Onyx3173
06-12-2012, 04:55 PM
I'm not sure either of those are viable solutions for me. The email I use for Steam isn't a gmail address in the first place and even if it was, I'm not sure I could get it to filter just the Steam downtime announcement thread emails.

And I'm pretty sure RSS feedsupdate a lot more than once a day anyways. I only check my email once a day unless I'm specifically expecting something I need to attend to. Having a desktop RSS feed for Steam announcements would be quite helpful.
Pretty sure VBulletin only allows RSS Feeds down to the sub-forum level.
That seems like an extremely odd limit to the system.

Yes yes, I understand everything. I'm just throwing ideas out there.

The point wasn't to have email notifications just for the downtime announcements, it was a general solution that would also give you immediate notification of the downtime announcements.
I'm just throwing ideas out there to help you, but as it looks now there really isn't a good solution now. vBulletin is stupid.

Mainly out of curiosity, what email do you use? Chances are there's a way to get desktop notifications for that as well.

My main email is still Yahoo. I'm not aware of any solutions for it but I could be wrong. And sorry if I seem like I'm just shooting down ideas immediately, I am actually considering them.

Hopefully someone can help me figure out a good solution here. It doesn't need to be an RSS feed or anything, it just needs to be some sort of way to get reasonably quick notifications of downtime announcements. (Even up to like an hour or so would be alright for me, Valve often does announce downtime more than an hour in advance.)

This actually seems like a very viable solution. If I use this URL: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784745&goto=newpost
then it does go to the newest page properly. The only question I have is using the advanced refine option. For the title start block I can put <div id="post_message_ but I'm unsure how (or if it's even possible) to include the #######"> part and have it just accept any numbers that are there. Currently this (http://feedity.com/steampowered-com/V1FVU1BQ.rss) is what I have. I think that'll work even if I can't get rid of the numbers. It'd look a lot cleaner if I could though.

I've almost got this working in Rainmeter now. I just can't quite get the exact line I need though.

URL=http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784745&goto=newpost
RegExp="(?siU)This is the last staff post in this thread.(.*) target.*"

URL=http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/[MeasureSite]
RegExp="(?siU)href\s*=\s*(\"([^\"]*\")|'[^']*').*"
Those two combinations return almost exactly what I need but I'm unsure how to refine it as far as I need cause I'm really not good with regular expressions. I only got that far with the help of a friend who couldn't figure it out either.

That combination returns
href="showpost.php?p=31144085&postcount=448"
I need to get rid of the href=" and the " at the very end as well. Does anyone here know enough about regular expressions to help me get that?

How about notifications? "Warning, Steam going down in 30 minutes..."

I also Agree on this.

It really jaratees me off, I finally get a bunch more DD DLC, and now i can't play it.

Valve seriously needs to do the Steam Maintenance in the middle of the night when most people in the US are asleep,
Not During Primetime when most people are on.

They should do it early in the morning or around noon when most ppl are at work.

They do it at the slowest time of day for Steam. Seeing as Steam is a world-wide system, it will always affect a lot of people. Apparently noon to 5PM or so PST is the slowest time on Steam.

Since they are based in the US, doing maintenance in the middle of the night would mean getting everyone involved up at 3AM in into work.

Not that big of a deal.. but if something goes wrong NOW they have to emergency call in everyone else and have them rush in, except the one guy who knows how to fix the problem that isn't answering his phone.

As annoying as it is, it's better to do it when everyone is there and if something goes horribly wrong, they at least have everyone available.

Valve seriously needs to do the Steam Maintenance in the middle of the night when most people in the US are asleep,
Not During Primetime when most people are on. As I never tire of telling people, peak time was 5 hours ago. There's a handy graph: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

That's a silly suggestion, because where it is early in the morning in one part of the planet, contrary it is a peak time for being online. Either way, one part of the world or Steam community will be affected.

It seems like it'd be a bit better of an idea to vary maintenance times so that the same group of people isn't always affected by maintenance. That would probably get on peoples' nerves less overall.

Nah, they need to have one set time so people know to schedule around that time. It's already a bit of a crap-shoot when it's going down. At least making it the same time would ease some of the annoyance.

Curious as to if anyone else has their Steam Community down or has "No Connection" at the moment. I can look through the Store, Community, and other things. However the Online Friends and Chat features are down.

I had already looked through the Downtime Announcements and there's nothing posted for today. I do have internet though, or else I wouldn't be able to post this.

I'd appreciate it if the people at Valve could extend the flash sale for abit to compensate for the downed server.
