I just bought a g1 see, And well I would love to have my steam friends list so I could chat with my buddies, even when not on my computer or playing games. I suggest making/designing an application for Steam for the Android OS. Steam Mobile perhaps.
I'm not sure how much of a stretch or how far from possible this is, but oh man I'd totally love a steam app on that android market in the near future. I'm sure tons of people would agree with me.
Sure, straight after linux and apple.

A web-based Steam chat would do it and would be totally platform-independant.

I was about to suggest this today

Well if you mean "mobile games" as in just playing games from your phone on your steam list, that is highly impractical. The phones don't have enough computing power to process any of anything really XD. But if you mean, say, world of goo mobile, and it was ported for a phone? I could see that happening.
anyhow, STEAM FRIENDS APP! PLOX

No. Just no. STEAM is a DD first, chat system second. you don't need to be on STEAM 24/7. Go get some REAL friends, and MSN, k?

I think they should be able to open the protocol to the likes of Pidgin, trillian, adium e.t.c...
Imagine the potential, organise a game with friends from all across the country, without the need to be all on the same communication channels.

lol I've cut down my MSN usage because most of my friends are getting onto Steam :) but it's missing the file transfers etc which is very useful.

Some people agree that steam is a lot better than msn, or just prefer steam for other reasons. (Like that steam uses encryption, and msn by default, does not. Or that some people don't have msn, but do have steam, same goes for AIM, Yahoo, etc)
Steam does not work cross platform properly (which is a SHAME, you guys can get so much more users if you'd make it cross platform! It's already C++, you just need to switch some libraries!)
So instead, they could also opensource, or just make a library for it, so that other devs can easily make addons for their products (such as pidgin, or mobile messengers).
Or just opensource the steam project itself! I'm sure there's plenty devs out there wanting to help making it better and such..

Steam's chat functionality won't be any better than (or anywhere near) Jabber/YIM/AIM/MSN until it is cross platform.

+1 for an Android Steam application. I'd love to be able to keep up with my friends even when I'm on the go. It's the only chat software I use at this point.

Looking at the date makes me skeptic, but I just googled mobile steam. and it showed this forum :P
so well. Funny that the guys with "good" answers in this thread got banned lmao.. but Ye i hope they gonna do a webbased SteamChat thingy ;o Id enjoy it with my mobile! (NO DONT BAN ME FOR GIVING A GOOD ANSWER!)
PS: I dont wanna give any Comments to the OS it will be done on..
But they should make it global.. no Iphone ap, no Android up.. Java or something wud be great, since alot of ppls dont have *cough*crappy*cough*-iphones and awsome droids
(Including me ;o. im happy with my Nokia and Symbian) anyway! thats it ;o

1. Who we were gonna do it 24/7.
2. It can use the steam instant messenger.
3. Would make a good app store for the droid, Blackberry, etc.
4. WE DO HAVE REAL FRIENDS! >:|
5. LOLOLOLOL U HAVE MSN GET AIM OR SOMETHING BETTER THEN MSN!
P.S. MSN and other messengers don't count as REAL friends, it count as any type of friend.

The reason this thread was bumped is because of the search function.

Im posting this cause as i was googling "Steam Mobile" i happened to come accross this thread.
It so happens that Nasa Trained Monkeys just launched Steam Mobile for Android and iPhone. The app doesn't support chat yet (we all know steam hasn't provided a way to make this work) but it still lets you browse your game collection, your friends, groups, achievements, etc.
It also has a cool feature that shows you the lastest store updates, such as games that are coming soon or last minute discounts.
Sorry for the self promoting but the thread title was just too tempting.
If you want to check out steam for iOS go here
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/steam-mobile/id390941823?mt=8#
or if you are an Android kind of guy
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.nasatrainedmonkeys.steamMobile
The app is maintained by us and we are giving it our best to make it the most complete Steam App available :)

Apple - Check
Linux - (with wine)
Android - Taps foot waiting
Its funny because i never thought i would have any cell phone games from steam but then flight control went on xmas sale.

I hope Steam develops for mobile very soon. Currently there is Feint that basically operates just like Steam, but is for mobile only. If Feint gets too far ahead of the game, Steam will have a hard time catching up in the mobile field.
It only makes sense to be platform agnostic as developers find better and better ways to make use of all portals for their games.
Wouldn't it be great if you could play a game on your console, swap to your laptop, then finally play on your phone depending on your situation?
I'm really hoping Steam for mobile comes soon!

I don't want to seem like an ♥♥♥...oh wait, I don't care if I seem like an ♥♥♥. This is entirely pointless, you really want valve to waste valuable development time on an app for android? Steam is a content delivery system, not to mention how many other phone OS's there are than just android. Think before you suggest something stupid, and as stated before, get real friends.

Valve has stated in the passed that they are interested in doing this. ( a mobile version of steam for iOS and Android. )
I attempted to find a link to the post but its been so long its probably gone.

Real friends get online too, unless your real friends live in the stone age. Which means you don't have living friends, which also means you have no friends.
Steam is also part community site, and that's why the Steam client supports Screenshot uploading, a personal profile, text chat, voice chat and a Friends list.
Or do you ever only use the Store and Library buttons?

You infer so much into what i say that you continue on blindly, inferring more and more nonsense as you go along. many steam users have many friends that aren't particularly close, and probably dont live even remotely close to the them. While yes, there are exceptions, mostly this is the case. I'll be perfectly honest, I rarely use the community tab, I frequent the news tab, occasionally visit the store, and use my library as needed. After you strip away everything else, what you're trying to say is that steam's friend system, which serves multiple purposes, warrants devoting the development time to build a damn android app for it. I'm attempting to type this while half asleep, and its rather cute that you think your shallow opinion is valid because of how you word it and utilize contrast. But really now, take a step back and look at what steam's friend and community functions are really for eh?

Indeed, from the horse's mouth.
And so, now there is an Android app for Steam. I wonder when they will give it some actual functionality?

Why so much hate for mobile devices? Is it truely that much of a stretch to expect valve to create a mobile app for smartphones when they've clearly been making steam much more than just a content delivery system but rather a community based system? Logically its the next step, because yes a lot of people like to remain connected and plugged in on the go these days, which is how our technology is evolving so unless you're wanting valve to not stay with the times I can't imagine how youd think it'd be a waste of the developers time to create an app.

I don't see why any reason why Steam would disable your account over it. imo.im is a major mobile messenger, not some sketchy app with 12 users.
I view it as a move in the right direction. Only caveat is it is slow to load your friends list (atleast for me)
