Has this happened to you? You buy DoW II, install it, and it's 100% ready to play! You double-click the game, and it says "Preparing to launch Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War." for anywhere from five minutes to two seconds before failing to launch.

A lot of us seem to be having the same problem: DoW II installs perfectly, and fails to launch. This sucks, and seems to be related to Steam, who has failed to respond as of yet. So, let's try and fix it, or work up some details. As of yet, nobody has quite come up with an exact cause, much less a perfect solution. So, I suggest everybody post what their system setup, so we can see if there's anything that connects us all, and I'll edit my post to narrow what the cause is(if there's anything to it at all). So here goes nothing.

First, a POSSIBLE solution: Simply re-install. This has worked for a lucky few, but not most.

OR

1) Exit Steam
2) Delete clientregistry.blob from the Steam folder, which deletes all of Steam's client updates
3) Restart Steam, let it re-update itself.

Secondly, what it does not seem to be caused by: Downloading from Steam vs. Buying a hard disc copy.

Thirdly, What Valve has to say: Nothing yet.

My system configuration:
Windows XP with Service Pack 2.
Processor: AMD 3200+ ~2.2GHz
Direct X 9.0C
RAM:2 Gigs.
Video Card:Nvidia GeForce 7800GS
I bought the game and installed it from a disc, but having re-installed and installed from that same disc multiple times, I've since tried downloading the whole game: this fixed nothing.

I'm having the same problem as well, only when the steam pop up window saying "Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II preparing to launch" goes away, another window pops up saying "Dawn of War II failed to launch(error code 83)" I tried researching "error code 83" and only found that its a registry problem, but yet I've tried cleaning my registry up with multiple registry cleaners including RegCure and Uniblue. Neither worked. So I'm stumped as everyone else.

My System:
WindowsXP Service Pack 3
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 1.8 GHz
NVIDIA Geforce 6200 graphics card
DirectX 9
500 GB FreeAgent External Drive
512MB PC800 RDRAM Internal Drive

there is a known incompatibility issue with amd dual cores, relic has an installer that you can run but I don't have a link since I run intel.

Yes, I'm having a similar problem. I load the game from Steam, it says 100% ready. When I try to launch there's a 5-10 second pause, then it says "DOW2 auxiliary installer has stopped working".
I've tried deleting the game and reloading to no effect.
I'm up to date on all drivers/versions.
Does anyone know if there are any quad core compatibility issues?
Steam and thq haven't given any useful advice other than deleting and reloading the game.

Yesterday the game stopped working for me, no apparent reason, no errors just would not launch. DOW .exe was in process list but that's all I got. eventually I narrowed the problem down to Google Mirror Bloga facebook app of all things. The missus put it on in the morning and it killed the game, seems there's an external tsr that it uses to link to external blogs to publish on FB, got rid....game worked again. Not applicable to everyone I know but just goes to show that even the most unlikely of things can have an effect.

I receive the "this game is currently unavailable" response every time I try to start it, and I've tried everything like most did, I've been asking on all forums but none answered. Ive noticed that sometimes when the "preparing to lauch" message lasts some more second that a Dos like window appears and vanishes in a moment and as title it has a long directory name and it ends with "/DoW2 auxiliary installer" so maybe it's that one that can't start and prevents us from playing.

I hope somone will listen to us

This morning I checked my mail and finally found a response from Valve: a form letter sending me to this page: Games do not run after 'Preparing to Launch' (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6218-USFX-5568)

I tried all the suggestions on the page (half of them I'd already tried). No change.

I've just discovered something: I don't have a DoW2.exe

I just can't explain it, it was there the first time I installed the game but now it isn't there anymore.
I checked in any possible way but it isn't there, do you know why? and could you send me the copy of your own executable for the english installation so that I can fix it up because the integrity verification can't do anything for it

ps. I have Vista 32

I got a response back from steam support and they said there may be secondary installers that need to be run. They said the following:

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\dawn of war 2\Install

Run these following installations:

DXSETUP.exe
vcredist.msi
gfwlivesetup.exe

I'm reinstalling the game now and once its done doing its thing, I'm going to try installing these files. I'll post a reply on here and let you all know if it works or not. It may be a possible solution to the mess.

The problem isn't with steam, it's (at least for the first poster) that your processor is below the minimum requirements. While I understand that an Athlon XP 3200 is comparable in speed to a P4 3.2, the game uses SSE2 instructions. AMD saw fit not to include these until their next line of processors whereas Intel had them on the P4. This is why the game will run on a P4 and not an XP 3200.

This was posted on the relicnews forums by one of the relic employees so I'm not just pulling things out of nowhere. He also said that the decision to use the SSE2 instructions was to make the game run faster for everybody and if they hadn't been used, the system requirements would've been higher and your processor wouldn't have been able to run the game anyways.

If it's any consolation, I also have an XP 3200 so I can't play the game either.

IrishRamrod
02-24-2009, 02:10 PM
Well, I tried following the instructions given to me by steams support and as said from Salx, it didn't work. So again, I have no real solid idea what the hell is wrong. It may very well be the processor as stated in the above post, but then again I have a P4 and it still doesn't run. So again, no solid evidence as to what the problem is. If anyone else has a solutions or possible ideas, please, by all means, share them with us.

Tirisfal
02-24-2009, 02:13 PM
Irish, your processor doesn't support SSE2 instructions either. It was only the later P4's (3.2 ghz and higher) that supported it. Hence the minimum requirements being at least a 3.2 P4.

IrishRamrod

I see...My apologies then, I was unaware of that. In that case, to fix the problem, should I have a new processor installed or what?

Dr.korig
02-24-2009, 03:18 PM
To be sure of this, search with google the application named CPU-Z. It will tell you if your processor support SSE2 instructions or not.

And if not, you should buy a new processor =)

I have a machine that is more than good enough and The game just runs slow and occasionally choppy. I turned all the general settings to medium for the graphics and made sure to run anti-spyware and anti-virus programs so those arent the problem either. I usually have to struggle to keep the game from freezing during the opening vids as well.

run steam for other games no problem. Work in IT so not an idiot, at least as far as installing games is concerned. followed all steps suggested to try to rectify and nothings works. Steam, THQ - et this sorted or I'm returning the game. You have one week. nuff said.

Oh and seriously what nuffer thought it was a good idea to sell a game in store that requires a third party launching app like steam? i understand for multiplayer, but why can't i just launch the game for single player? Or can I...

My problem here seems to be it just keeps saying "Downloading starting...", yet nothing happens?

I cant seem to find a way to manually update it either...

As earlier mentioned deleting the ClientRegistry.blob and restarting steam solved this.

This is a problem inherent in Steam and its wobbly architecture.

I have had this problem with FEAR2 and Left 4 Dead. It takes anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour (perhaps more) for the games to authenticate.

Deleting the ClientRegistry.blob doesn't hurt, it can helps sometimes but for the most part it's just a matter of time.

One thing that might help, at least to get the game started in the release version, is to tll it not to auto-update. Launch the game, do what you need, exit and switch the auto-update option back on.

hang on - sorry we need to keep this post focussed on the fact that there are many people having this 'can't launch the game' issue where there is no error - the system simply does not launch the game. Is there anyone at THQ or Steam listening?? I've just paid almost $100AUD for this game and it doesn't work. Surely the creators of this game can't be saying "bad luck"...

DJMo0rE

it launches a program called aux installer, then closes and never launches the game, i paid 52 dollars for this game, the least i could do is play it, i have an amd athilon 2200 and an ati x800 it should at least run. doesn't even run, and the worst thing is that you cant return the game after it's been activated, and you are required to activate it before you even launch the game.

what a rip off. i'm never going to buy a game that forces to go through steam ever again.

1. no return policy if your computer isn't compatible, when clearly by the system requirements, i can.

2. no customer assistance on trying to get the damn game to work i paid 50 bucks for.

this game is a big rip off, anyone who is deciding weather or not to buy or even download a pirated version is not worth it. steam's a rip off.

Yeah i made the mistake of buying this game... should have known better...
Wont launch the DOW2.exe just sits dumply on my taskmanager but nothing happens.
And to anyone saying, " youre computer sux ***, not good enough computer, programs bad blablabla.", guess what?
Pirated version works.
funny old world isnt it?
Its real shame since the game itself is really good, why the f they had to ruin it with this kind of... silly? :o

I've read all the posts concerning this issue...

PC Details:

Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon 3.2
2GB RAM

I've never used Steam before, and only had to because for some unknown reason the DOW2 disc wont read in my PC. So, i entered the game code and it started downloading fine. Took about 4 hours after repeatedly saying "Steam servers are busy" etc.

Press launch, pops up for a second or two then dissapears like everyone is saying, i run Total War, WoW, Warhammer online, Farcry 2 and a load of other top-notch games on this PC and i've never ever had a problem.

Can someone just clarify, is Steam actually installing DoW2 when it says downloading? i've got the icon on my desktop to run it but it obviously doesn't work, or is it downloading all the game files and expects me to install it?

Either way i cant execute it, checked the folders (I have a HND in ICT, enough to say i know what i'm doing) i cant see a .exe file to -run- the game, just a aux_installer that pops up a run command window for a second then does nothing. It's like Steam has DLd everything but forgot to DL the exe file to run it?

What can i do? i've entered the code now so i cant take it back, i'm sure as hell not going to sit here with a copy i cant use just because of someone elses ignorance.

It's now been over two weeks dealing with Relic support, who after offering the initial help/fixes covered in this and other threads have simply stopped responding to my emails (which have been generally polite). I have the problem where no error is raised, the dow2.exe file just spins for a few seconds in the process list and then stops. Someone please tell me I've missed the fix for this in another thread?

I have requested a refund directly as the store won't give one, but have not had any response.

Thought i would make my first post on this thread. I was having identical issues to those who have posted in this thread. I tried everything, including the suggestions found on steams own help sectIons.

I found an easy fix for me anyway. First delete DOW2 from your steam control panel. Next create a new user (i am using vista ultimate 32bit btw). Once a new user account has been created, reinstall any steam updates etc, re download DOW2, and then for some reason it launched! And it has been launching for past 2 days now *fingers crossed*

Hope this simple solution can help some of you anyway.

This fixed it for me go to wherever it is installed for me it was

E:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\dawn of war 2

then try to run the game from there if there is someting missing it will inform you then just download it and it should work

For me i was missing a directx .dll

My first post and the reason I signed up to this forum today is because DOW2 will not start.

My issue is that all seemed to install fine and when I try to start the game I get:
"Preparing to launch Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II..."

Further inspection shows that the process "DOW2.exe" starts then stops for my logged in user. No errors and nothing in the event log. The crazy thing about all this is that I have done everything in this thread and lots of other threads found via google still no joy.

I have spent about 3 hours searching around and I've emailed Steam support so I hope I'll get something back because I just want to play my new game :)

There is a temp solution-not sure if it is valid for everyone-my Dawn of War 2 game became unplayable after a patch was released via steam client-however if you desire to play the game you have bought the temp fix is to play the game from a different user on your computer-eg create "new user" on your pc and use the "new user" profile to run the steam app and game-this is the second game i can play again from steam using this method-the other game was Dawn of Discovery-something about incorrect save file format

sys: amd athlon 64 x2 dual core 4200+, 2 GB, ATI 4850, windows 7 pro 32bit

symptom: starting directly out of the steam folder popped up a "faultrep.dll" bad image error.

Starting via steam suppressed every error, just nothing happened.
After following ALL steps found anywhere (except any security related tweaks. Reinstalling, ignoring the DVD and pure download-install blahblah, it took days) I finally looked at the file (my win7 install is _really_ fresh I refused to assume a corrupt file ..) and found it to be 0 byte in size. Okaaaay...
Yikes. I searched for it on the win7 dvd - no luck. I wonder where it comes from. vc redist? I am not sure. I was lucky, I found a 2008 version of faultrep.dll in a winxp system32 folder of an older laptop. I USED THAT OUTDATED VERSION - removing in repair mode the 0 byte ghost, then copying the outdated file into system32. I thought now I'd at least get the fault via faultrep .. no, not exactly. The game started smoothly and is running crashless for some days now
Guess this will not help most of you. But maybe someone ran into it, too. Hm one more thing, I'd recommend not to use dll download services, unless it is directly from microsoft.
I am .. happy.. I did not run into the GFWL topics.
Good luck!

I haven't had a chance to read every post in the thread, so pardon me if this has already been discussed.

I am having a problem with MS VC Redist hanging when it tries to install during the First Time Setup(initially Step 2 of 5) of DoW II Single Player Demo. After several system hangs and reboots, I tried searching around for a fix. I read something about running Steam Client and DoW II as Admin, so I did that and it worked. I played for 2 hours, exited to make a purchase before the sale day ended yesterday, then tried to go back in and got the first time setup message once again, this time VC Redist was Step 1 of 2. After more hangs and reboots, I searched here for a solution and I saw in a sticky about updating certain programs, so I updated the Visual C++ Redist to the new 2010 (both x64 and x86 versions) per the links provided. But this was to no avail. I can still can not get back in. It just keeps hanging every time I try. I am running Win7 x64 on a new machine. Is this a known issue, or just something weird with my setup?

Any help is appreciated. Let me know if there is any additional info you need about my computer and I can post it. BTW, I am trying the demo this since a fellow Steam member offered me a deal on the extra copy that Steam gave him after he bought the DoW II pack, but I don't want to spend money on a game I can't play.

I am going to try this first:
I got a response back from steam support and they said there may be secondary installers that need to be run. They said the following:

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\dawn of war 2\Install

Run these following installations:

DXSETUP.exe
vcredist.msi
gfwlivesetup.exe

I'm reinstalling the game now and once its done doing its thing, I'm going to try installing these files. I'll post a reply on here and let you all know if it works or not. It may be a possible solution to the mess.

Thanks for posting the info. Now that I know where the redist file is, I am going to try to manually run it. Maybe I have a corrupted vcredist file, or maybe there is a conflict within my system. Don't know. KYP.

BTW, I already have GFWL running on my rig due to Batman: AA and FUEL, and those both run without a hitch.

Found the answer here:
http://www.forumtopics.com/busobj/viewtopic.php?p=567748
here is the version it is looking for...what a pain...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=32BC1BEE-A3F9-4C13-9C99-220B62A191EE&displaylang=en

use the command-line option “/C /T:<fullpathtofolder>” to extract the files vcredist.msi and vcredis1.cab from vcredist_x86.exe to a temporary folder.

Then, from the error message, browse to the vcredist.msi in the temporary folder you created and your install will continue.
There's an easier way to do this I've just found. DL the file from microsoft, then using winzip or winrar, extract the contents of the .exe file to a folder, which for me was vcredi~3.exe, then extract the contents of that .exe file, and within that are vcredis1.cab and vcredist.msi, point to this .msi file at the install.

"The file was inside you all along" or words to that effect...

I used the latest 2010 x86 version, opened with WinRAR, extracted the two files (not hard to find, though the names are not what you would think), renamed the old to "_old" (just in case) and renamed the new to the original names, and fired it up. Voila! Worked like a charm. Apparently, there was either a flaw in the VC package included with the demo, or Win7 just didn't like it.

Now, on my way to get me the full version.

Hi,
I've bought this game yesterday and after downloading it won't launch. Like many other people here I have the problem, that after the Steam "Preparing to launch..." window the game just won't run.

System information:
CPU: Intel Core i7
CPU speed: 2,94 GHz

I've tried a lot of solutions offered in this thread and nothing solved this issue.

I also am unable to launch dow2 iam running intel core 2 duo e4600 2.40 Ghz cpu 2 gig ram 64 bit windows 7 ultimate directx 11, and according to the error message i do not have a hardware rendering device. so it appears that dow2 does not recognise my graphics card.
funny thing is i also have dawn of war, dow winter assault, and dow soulstorm, and they all play perfectly on my computer, its just dow2 being difficult and refusing to work. So whats the difference, that can cause so much trouble.

i have just been reading other posts, and it appears to me, that all of us who are using 64 bit vista or windows 7 seem to be having the same sorts of launch problems,

maybe THQ aint smart enough to program games in 64 bit lol

I haven't been able to get my auxillary installer to properly work. At first it told me I hadn't installed MGVF properly and sure enough when I found it it wouldn't install on my windows Vista 64-bit.

So I found an alternative installer from Windows and installed it there. Now when I try to use auxillary installer it gives me the message error: 2. Checking the game cache integrity and adding the hotfire fix have not worked. Somehow I'm now downloading the update but I don't think that's going to solve this problem.

Really Steam? I pay money and you cannot provide? Isn't that sort of screwing your customer? I've seen this same error across many boards in microsoft, relic, and this very forum and you have done nothing to assist. I am getting very impatient.

does anyone else have any ideas that might work?

Every time I try to start the game I get a relic error report. It does show up in task manager however. I reinstalled windows live and it worked, I was able to launch the game (as a side note the Chaos Champion in the menu had no head?. Unfortunately the next day same issue, Relic Error report, submitted it but to no avail.

I tried a few of the fixes here but no luck, maybe for some of you updating windows live might work.

Had the not launchng problem myself.

DOW2.exe sits in processes but never runs. I had the Aux installer pop up then vanish.

However, I noticed that my Anti-virus flags dow2.exe as malware, I added an exception shut-down the process and relaunched, and it worked.

Then had LOTS of issues with GFWL, solved them all by using an offline local profile. Steam needs to state what games use GFWL in future as I won't buy them if it's required infuture.

Exact same problem here, and I've done the same thing trying to find a working solution..Everything else works fine, even the other DoWs - just not Retribution. Sucks.

If you have a problem about the Games for Windows Live thing when you try to update DoW2, try doing this(I'm not sure if someone suggested this though):

1. Download the latest client of Games for Windows Live.
2. Go to your "Steam" Folder then go on "SteamApps>common>dawn of war 2>Istall" folder.
3. Then if you have "gfwlivesetup.exe" in the install folder, then replace it with the newest GFWL client which you downloaded.
4. Run DoW2 then it wait for the update to finish then it will Run now.

I tried this n it worked but my computer still needs a better video card though TT^TT.

Last times Retribution is driving me mad. It works as long as game is closed properly. But when it does not, the only thing that seems to work is a complete reinstall.

Launching the game instantly gives Relic crash report. When I try to validate all files it does, finishes, and then all gets really f... up.

Game enters the Dumb mode. Further attempts to launch it don't show crash report. Instead system asks me if I allow buildbot_winslave04_blablablasmth to launch, then it attempts to install DirectX all over again and after that the aux_intaller pops out asking if I want to remove saved games. The final stage is starting the validate all over again.

Tried few things, non of them worked. Fully removing the game and reinstalling it does, but that takes a lot of time. Duh...

Got any faster methods? Plox...
