Hi,
I'm trying to add a friend, but it doesnt work. I filled out the form below:

What's the user name of the account you're using when you noticed the problem? A link to your SteamID page is fine.

Did you try the action once? More than once?

Multiple times.

First the guy was in my friend list under 'Invitations'. Since I suspected that something wasn't working, I removed the friend and added him again through his profile page. I got the error message '<steamname> is ignoring you'.
I tried adding the friend through his community profile page again today and got the message '[unknown] is ignoring you'.
If I try adding the friend through the steam client (searching on his emailadress) I get the error message 'There was a problem adding <emailadress> to your friends list.'.

At what time of day (and in what time zone) did you try the action, on what date?

I have pretty much the same problem as this. :eek:

I am in the GMT timezone and tried adding him as a friend over the weekend of 21st/22nd but he didn't recieve the
invitation. Later, i think it was on the 24th Feb, probably between 6-8pm, i deleted that invite and tried using
the community page.

It didn't seem to be doing anything so i retried it a few times and ended up getting the
following message - "[unknown] is ignoring you"

Now trying to add him directly through Friends results in
this message - "There was a problem adding *username* to your friends list".

Any help would be much appreciated! :)

I am having the same problem. My friend added me, but I can't add him back. He stays on the invitation list. It says he is already on my friend list, but I don't want him on the invitation thing.

I'm having this same problem with a friend, "kognito". My account is "DoubleFelix".

This happened about 5 minutes ago. I'm unsure as to the timing of who added whom first, but I added him, and when he failed to accept, I tried removing him and adding him again. On that second try and all subsequent tries, I recieve the error message "There was a problem adding kognito to your friends list."
He is now getting the error message "[unknown] is ignoring you", as well.

Is there any way to manage your ignores? Perhaps if I can remove him from the ignore list, it would work?

EDIT: Now I recieve the error "There was a problem adding [unknown] to your friends list."

Edit: The problem seems to have been resolved, though I'm not quite sure how.

I just hit the same issue, except I never removed my friend. The pop-up came up that I had one invitation, and for some reason it disappeared before I could click it. Now when he tries to add me, he gets the "user is ignoring you" error.

I'm having somewhat the same issue. It's been 3 weeks now and I'm still having a problem. Posted here, and also posted a steam question ticket. Steams response was very unhelpful.

i have the same problem, i deleted a friend just to abuse with him, then after few days i tried to add him.. i did everything, but i think that when you delete some1 from your steam friends you cant add him again :\ tahts f***ed up :\

im getting this problem too... a friend of mine recently got steam and i have added him 3 times already... and hes saying he hasnt got the invite, he also says he has tried adding me but i have no invited from him... also you can become friends with somebody you have deleted because i removed somebody from my list and the next day he re added me and hes back on my list now and i can speak to him. also this "x is ignoring you" bug disapeared for me after a day

I am having the same exact problem the OP is posting.

This is really annoying, as I can't add friends, or even join a friend's game through their Steam Community page.

I've already tried on two different computers, an XP and a Vista machine, with no luck.

Please, fix it, or give a solution!

Have to bump this old thread.

I've got this problem also. From the beginning I just had the friend I tried to ad under "invitations" but he didnt get anything. So I removed it and tried again and now I just get "There was a problem adding <name> to your friends list."

Isnt there any solution to this problem? Since I wanna play CoD MW2 with my friends this is a huge deal because we cant find eachother for publicservers any other way thanks to the crappy way they removed dedicated servers.

I'm having a similar problem. The last 7 friends I've added stay in my invitations list, they all said they've accepted my friend request, and I saw the popup/ok message that says they've accepted.

Same problem here. Friend couldn't figure out how to accept invite so I deleted to resend. Now when I try to add him I get that his friends list is full and when he tries to add me he gets that I'm ignoring him. His profile wasn't setup when I sent the first invite but I don't know if that has anything to do w/ the bug.

I just got this problem after the stupid friends list deletion that just happened a few hours ago. I got a message from my clan leader saying to re-add every1 because steam friends deleted every1. So i added every1 I could remember, that wasn't in TsM. When the friends list was fixed, which was about an hour ago. Every1 I couldn't remember was on my friends list and i could talk to them, but every1 i re-invited was still under "invitations" and they weren't receiving my invites. SOooo I removed them and tried to re-add them but I get what everyone else is getting now: [unknown] is ignoring you......Get this fixed asap please, don't piss off anymore members please.

I'm having the same problem, but only with some friends. Only after i remove all the invites, and ask the people concerned to re add me do i get them back.

The friends affected where the ones i was talking to when friends crashed, and the ones i re added when friends went down.

Ask your friends to ensure your not in their friends list (ask them to delete you if you are), then ask then to re add you.

This use has been your friend since 2009-02-27. Because of the timing in your post, I figure you were affected by this issue (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1156864), which has since been corrected.

It seems to be add friend, remove invitation before they accept, can't add them anymore (with a message saying they're ignoring you). That's by design. You must wait for the ignore response to expire.

I have the same problem. Double invite = ignore, and the other person can't add me either (steam tells him to buy some games before he can add anyone)

I also deleted the "Awaiting Confirmation" friend invite and tried again.

And now its telling me the same thing it was telling these people. Kind of silly.

Same here. Tried to add 3 friends that got steam with no games in it so they can't add people.

First one it worked just fine, the other two they said they missed it and couldnt find any request... Then I deleted by invite and sent again and it gives me an error.

It's kind of a pain, not being able to invite your people in your tf2 games... Please fix this.

I'm getting the same problem.
Ever since Valve went to the orange box css i've had nothing but problems with my server from every update Valve release.

Back on topic.

I can't add a new friend,

every time I try and add them useing there steam I.D. I get the same error message,

"There was a problem adding <steam i.d.> to your friends list".

My friend trys and adds me useing steam i.d. and also gets the same problem. I'm in AU and friend is in RO.

I tried the reset IE settings like user Chekote said in another post, and that did nothing. I've never used IE on this pc, only firefox.

Can anyone, maybe a Valve rep tell us how to fix this error?
Or has Valve washed there hands of this problem just like they do with server problems after each update (no help at all).

It's good to see/read that I'm not the only one encountering problems with adding friends on steam.

Every time I add someone it tells me that they're in my friends list but yet it won't display their user name in the friends list.

Already tried that, if showing all friends via steam was that easy to fix thur wouldn't be all these threads about fixing the problem.

I found out it expires after 1440 minutes or 24 hours.

just though i would bump this thread even no it is old to tell you guys how to fix this, if you block all communication with the person you tried adding then unblock them you can then readd them without being ignored... happy days

I am having this exact problem, and because Steam doesn't allow people to add friends until they buy a game, my friend cannot add me back.

This is ironic, as I'm trying to send him a game that I bought for him. But he can't get the game because the email sending option fails HARD. He clicks the link in the email, and nothing happens.

This is the exact BS that made me not want to ever deal with Steam, I was really hoping I was wrong in trusting this company. I've noticed zero fixes since it was brought up...holy ♥♥♥♥ing crap...2 1/2 years ago. What the heck? Are there even any people in your tech support section?

I had a friend sign up for steam and going to his page or mine we can click the add friend button and it says your friend has been added but we never show up in each others friends list.

I think the problem is he just needs to buy a game first, the problem is the two games we were going to play were Global Agenda and Team Fortress 2. Both are free so these don't count right and this is why I can't see him on my friends list and vise versa?

Okay People i have managed to fix this problem, all in about 30 minutes or so, Anyway here is how you Fix it

If your already participating in Steam beta skip to step 2

Step 1: Sign up for steam beta (go to settings, and under beta participation select Steam beta)

Step 2: go to your friends list and press add Friends, Search there name up

Step 3: click Block all communications, when this is done continue to step 4

Step 4: when it loads up your Blocked list, Select the person you want to add and press Unblock

Step 5: now search them up and Press Add Friend, Did it work?

Add some rep if it did

New Steam friend ADD is Stupid. It will not add users via their email address, and it doesn't work when finding people via username. Bring back the old system, its just unnecessary act causing problems. Just do what the community likes for once, besides we're the one that would be using that function the most.

Some accounts do, and some don't

Looks like we're going to send 'steam support ticket' whenever someone likes to find their old account. [Because the only way is to type in username or email not profile name.]

how to fix: Steam finds their old friend add system and restores it back. At least update it so it doesn't open via steam-browser when your on steam.

- Changed 'Add Friend' button in the friends list to point to a much-improved interface for searching for friends

I see no difference, i still cannot add friends by searching their email/username. It won't pop up. All i get is '0 Results' and yes, there are no typo have tried it 50 times with correct case sensitive. I'm having the same problem again.

Wont hurt if the old system was was available... At least should have a option in steam community [Classic settings] or something.

Try adding my mates account name 'sonic94800'. Let me know if you can add him by his username using the new 'friend add' system. If you were referring to "Profile name", that's a different story, and lame. People always change their name often so it's very difficult to keep in track with profile names. It would be logically better idea to search via username (because its static and cannot be changed) or additionally email.

Why is this part of the design? I thought it was a bug until now.

I've run across this sometimes while trading: I send an invite, then see that they have traded the item I was interested in so I remove the invitation from my friends list.

If they then post another trade I'm interested in, I'm out of luck because I can't add them again.

It sure feels like a bug. I get no feedback on why I can't add them, I just know that for some reason the friend invitation I'm trying to send is not appearing in my friends list.

But I haven't been ignored. The invitation is still there, and they haven't responded to it when I remove it myself...

BTW, on busy sites like TF2 trading post, someone might get a lot of invitations after posting a good deal. Typically the poster will 'ignore' most of the invites after they've done the trade, but that doesn't mean they want to ignore those people if they post another trade...

Maybe there needs to be 2 ways to turn down a friend invitation, 'ignore' (which might block further invitations for a certain time period) and 'decline' (which won't!)
