Is it possible to use the Steam community overlay whilst watching full screen vids in VLC?

I tried simply adding it to steam as a non steam game, but it doesn't load the overlay when I press Ctrl + Tab.

Thanks in advance.

The overlay is a hook that hooks into applications using Direct3D or OpenGL.

VLC uses neither, which means the overlay will never work.
Also, you do not need to add the games or applications to Steam for the overlay to work.

VLC actually supports a whole list of output methods, DirectX and OpenGL included: http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vlc.png
But yeah, the thing shows up for 1 second and crashes.

How do you get the overlay to work without Steam?

When I use the OpenGL option, It stutters and can't cope with the over lay. using DirectX3D it opens at the resolution of the video, And doesn't work in full screen.

By VLC do you mean The media player?

If so then that would be cool.
