What if Steam had the Steam Community for the iPhone or iPod Touch? Or at least offered a chat server service to it can be ran in another app?

I have an iPod Touch and would love to be able to use it on the go, which is currently not an option for me.

Please comment!

Why limit it to just Apple Products? It should be accessible via Blackberries and other smart phones.

It's impossible to code it for all the smartphones out there ever.

Make an iPhone app and a JavaME app, and you're just about covered.

Steam would make an awesome mobile app! You could also add the iPod games to your library.

Is is relatively easy to make iPhone apps? Maybe Steam could hire a freelancer or something :P

At least make an open API that people could use to interact with the Steam Community platform, like Digg or Facebook did.

They won't make a chat API, it's too insecure.

i have an iphone so naturally i would want to integrate steam into it somehow.

-friend list: see what your friend is playing and messages
-groups: get reminders on upcoming scheduled games, etc.
-achievements: show achievements to compare with friends
-stats: show stats for tf2, at least ;)
-screenshots: why not? i would show everyone how i wasted my spring break.

Its crazy, I know, but it would also take a lot of work on the Steam platform. But hey, nothing's wrong with sharing ideas. Here is to hoping!

just incase you didnt get the firmware 2.0 memo on ipod touches and iphones, hold both the sleep/wake and home button button for a few seconds and let go. if you see a white flash it took a screen shot and now its in your photos app

Because you need to know the second your friend gets an achivement. This so reminds me of the comic penny arcade did:

This makes no sense. Many chat APIs exist out there. Steam's authentication is already distributed in steam itself opening the API in no way necessarily makes something insecure.

If you're using firefox as a browser and you use it for online banking or any other https secure connectivity, then you're using SSL encryption, you can even read the firefox source code to see exactly how it works -- this in now way whatsoverer makes it insecure and that's the full source not just an API.

What a silly comment.

Any updates from Steam people yet? Any idea if this can ever be released as an API?

I'd like to have a web client for Steam friends/chats. That would cover all smartphones out there.

I really hope Valve creates an app for Steam Friends, especially now that the 3.0 update is bringing push notifications.

I use Steam Friends more than other chat systems like MSN or AIM, so such an app would be great. It'd also make announcements and events actually useful, because I wouldn't have to be at my PC to get them.

Steam doesn't get notified it is VALVe that gets notified as they developed Steam.

After 9 months of hard work, I have finally finished my Steam Community app for people who use an iPhone or iPod touch.

If anyone is interested, a ton of information is available here: http://GearsApp.com

Thats a technical problem. I have contacted Valve to see if we can cooperate on the project. I truly hope that feature will be added soon.

Thank you for your interest!

I'm just trying to gather some user feedback here: What do you feel is the appropriate price point for this application? With and without chat

Honestly it should remain free like the Steam Client.

Unfortunately I'm only charging to cover the price of the iMac and the iPhone developer license I bought. Once the price breaks even I'll adjust the price accordingly.

I'll probably pay up to $10 for it, but I would love chat, and inviting people to multiuser chats and groups.

I'm sure a steam app which would have "friends chat" enabled would be very popular. Even at .99 you would cover your spending in a few days and make profit. 90% of people on this forum with an iphone would most likely be interested.

I think $4.99 for an app like this is fair but consider at that price it will very quickly drop out (or never reach) the top 25-50 which is where the app needs to be to get exposure, at 99 you could easily hit the top of the charts and it would stay at top for a while depending on popularity.

Personally, I would pay $10 for an app like this but only cause I would absolutely love the ability to chat on steam through my iphone, most wouldn't pay above $3.

Yep! Gears is being pirated at a 65% rate right now..
Rather than starting a useless fight against software pirates I'm toying around with the idea of releasing Gears free for one weekend and then setting the price lower than the current $2.99.

Tell me what you think :)

It sucks that it's being pirated, pretty unfair on you even though it's to be expected 65% is a pretty high number.

Seriously, I think $2.99 is fine. There's a lot of work that needs to be put in and Paying $3 for me isn't much, it's one packet of chips at most which I could do without :D

You could advertise it as a "Free weekend" or as a "$0.99" weekend. I usually (call me crazy) don't look in the "free" list because most free apps aren't very good :p

I'm thinking next weekend or the weekend after that. I'll be in Texas this week for a school competition so I don't want Gears to complicate things while I'm down there. I need help spreading word of the free weekend so if you can, pass it on. :)

There, you don't need developer licences and can spread your work freely on any webspace without any appstore.

Please Valve add a steam iphone app. Have already tried to download and install steam on my iphone with no luck, going to try some other browsers lol. Anyways, being able to be on your friends list at any time would be super sweet. I honestly don't see why this hasn't been done yet. If it was a 20 dollar app, I would pay 20 etc etc

Sorry about the piracy man.

Is that the reason it hasn't been updated? Is it just not worth it?

Thats nice man. I'll have to fire up the old blackberry app SDK and see if I can't get something like that built. Maybe if users do most of the footwork, valve will throw us a little support and get something off the ground.

Again, good job it looks nice.
