I doubt Contracts will come to Steam. It is available in the Hitman Trilogy. I suggest you purchase that, as you get Hitman 2, and Blood Money, and you don't have to use Steam to play them.

Apparently, Contracts isn't on Steam because the copyright for the song in "Rendezvouz in Rotterdam" wasn't able to be renewed.

Is it really that hard to replace a single song?

This should not be legal. I mean you can't sell a whole game because of this? If you license your song for a game, you should have to give rights to that song in whatever form the game takes in it's lifetime.
I think this is complete BS, we are protecting an individual's right to be a selfish a-hole, that is a right people shouldn't have.
In essence, no one wants to pay for it.

Blood Money was good, but so was Contracts.
The first two though weren't that enjoyable, as while i liked Silent Assasin but after the sequels came out, it now feels incredibly limited and clunky for some reason.

I like not having to deal with discs... so, even though I bought 3 of the games.. I would like the collection on steam... but I really don't want to buy it if it's not the collection... if it's missing a game, it's not The Hitman Collection.. it's more like A Hitman Selection.
I don't remember how the track was integrated to the level, obviously not a CD track cos that would have been quick to replace.. although, from some other games I have seen that often no updates are made to old games on steam, unlike another great game download site which is also DRM free but always make sure their releases work properly on latest hardware...
Beyond Good and Evil for example, though a great game, is so buggy on current systems...
So anyway, the rant is basically getting to the point that I think they're just gonna be too lazy to sort this out for us.

No, you should get whatever the contract was for.
Haven't you ever watched a TV series on DVD that had had all the music replaced (The State being the most infamous, with all music replaced). Or that Stairway to Heaven joke in Wayne's World that only makes sense in the theater because if you watch it at home they're NOT playing Stairway?

Argh... another potentially great deal spoiled!
The substitution of Codename 47 for Contracts is not acceptable since I can already go buy Trilogy which has the three superior games. To add insult to injury the package implies that it encompasses the entire series.

My thoughts exactly. It felt like something was missing when looking at the list, and of course...it's Contracts. A definite bummer, enough to probably keep me from getting the deal.
Playing Contracts right before Blood Money makes the game so much better. It's unfortunate that I can't get the full collection on Steam. Would have been my favorite weekend deal this year, otherwise.

The other hitman games frankly suck I've tried them blood money is an awesome game but the other fail.
What the.. blood money was the sucking one. It hadn't got any challenge and there were only couple of different solutions into a mission, where the other hitmans got a lot more. Only good thing was it's eyecandy, and it truly made my x1900xtx scream like a pig with full details.
I heard also that the song was in the way of getting contracts to steam. The record company got too gready and wanted to shoot themselves to their own leg. Happens a lot these days.

They are all fun. But Codename47 and blood money are the best. You can use other cloths and walk buy people and not get busted instantly. SA and contracts you just cant do that. But still All great games!

Wow! I was just about to buy the collection, so i went to google to find out when hitman 5 was coming (i suppose i will be a mega pack then, thats why im not buying Deus Ex series now, Deus Ex 3 its near...), but when i was searching for the "new" hitman 4, i realize that already are 4 and Steam only shows 3... WTF!, even worse, i already play blood money, so now just now i realize that i miss an entire title from the series, and i never play the 1 either, so i want all of them!!!!! Im not buying anyone until Steam have the 4 games here (luckily when the 5 came out ;) )

Gee, remove the song from the game?
To be honest, it's not as simple as that. They'd need to somehow replace the song by either contracting out new music or licensing more. On top of that, they might have to modify some of the game's original files which they no longer have access to; it's easy to say "change it" but what happens if the server the source code was sitting on caught fire and was lost? You'd have to go back and test the whole game repeatedly just to make sure the changes make don't wreck anything.
And, on top of that, there could well be other business problems. Releasing a game, even on Steam, is not a trivial matter. Who gets the money? Square Enix? IO Interactive? And who specifically in those companies? What if nobody from the original team that made Contracts is still around? While unlikely, don't assume this is something that can be done in half an hour and shoved onto the Internet.

I don't think any source code gets lost. Those are pretty nicely secured things. This is why the classic games end up on Steam from years back. Even games like wolf3d. It's more like conviniency issue or some licencing thing as you said. Too much effort too little money so no deal.
Money goes always to the company who owns the rights to the game and has the power to distribute it. The developers who made the game get nothing, unless they are having stocks or ownership in the IO Interactive or the publisher Eidos/SQ-E (which they don't). Infact some of the hirman series key employees at IO Interactive left the company few years back.
Sometimes there are even situations where a Distributor owns company like IO (like Eidos does) so they just put the studio work on a game and gather the money out from the game. Sometimes developer sells the rights to the game they made (Remedy sold Max Payne rights to Rockstar) so the Rockstar can do whatever they want with the franchise and Remedy gets nothing, not even from the games they originally made.

What an idiot. Anyone that blames Clutch for this mistake is a dumbass. This guy is a prime example.
Not only does the song rule (along with the band), but why would, if you're truly a fan of a game, you want anything to be changed about it? I wouldn't want the soundtrack of a game to be modified in any way. What the hell's stopping you from buying it from eBay or another source? It's not in dire need of being available on Steam for purchase. Get real, or complain to the real problem--Warner Music Group (WMG).

I just thought I'd add something to this thread. Technically speaking, the Hitman series in Steam does encompass the whole series. I say technically, because Contracts was nothing more than a rehash of the first two games, so that people could get caught up on the story before the launch of Blood Money.
While I, too, miss it in Steam, it's not technically accurate to say that you're missing anything from the series without Contracts.
All that's really missing is updated versions of missions from the first two games.
*EDIT*
And as for the song, I mute during that song anyway. It could go away completely for all I care.

Is there any source you might post so we can read up on the problem? I've never heard of anything similar concerning video games. So they, like, licensed the track only for few years or something? Otherwise I don't see how the current situation came to be. *confused*

In all honesty, Contracts was just a slightly updated version of Hitman 2. You're not missing much.
Blood Money is pretty much a reboot of the series, and Hitman 2 is widely regarded as the best Hitman game ever made... so I'm pretty happy with it. Never played Contracts that much anyway, and when I did those few times, I remember it being pretty buggy.

Indeed. Contracts is absolutely not worth buying, it consists just of remade maps from Codename 47 and a few random maps. A story basically doesn't exist, you just get shot and fall into delirium.

I came here wondering exactly what was asked by the thread title.
Man, I wish it was a different reason. What an awful end to my search for answers. It feels like there's a hole in my Hitman collection. (Even though Blood Money is easily the best one, I have a desire to play Contracts now and again.)

I love it but is really hard so hard that I finished playing with cheats and fun is gone... Except with Blood Money that I found more fun and easy.
BTW The way the song is really rare. So rare that seems that the only studio version is the CONTRACTS version!!!!

Let's not forget the replacing of Taco Bell with Pizza Hut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fwFnSi_esI) in non-American releases of Demolition Man... hysterical :)
For some non-American releases, references to Taco Bell were changed to Pizza Hut. This includes dubbing, plus changing the logos during post-production. Taco Bell remains in the closing credits. In the Swedish release the subtitles still use Taco Bell while the sound and picture has been altered ... The original version released in Australia (on VHS) contained Taco Bell, yet the newer version on DVD was changed both in logo and dubbing to Pizza Hut. (If you look closely at the scene where the restaurant patrons are looking through the glass windows to the fight scene outside, you can still see Taco Bell etched into the glass, even in the modified version.)
Anyway, +1 to Contracts being one of the best in the series - Fresh perspective on the first game's missions which far too many people have not experienced.
Will probably shoot Clutch an email, although I suspect WMG will have more to do with this...

Ahh I am sick of this copyright bs its usually always to do with some crappy song that was put in the end credits or something >.< The above poster is right.. can't remember what page but this kind of contractual blackmail should be illegal. And yea I don't understand why they can't just remove the damn song either. Contracts was probably my 3rd favourite out of the series.. would may be my 2nd if only it wasn't so consolised.
Blood money and silent assassin being first and second respectively.
First one was OK but it was a little bit ahead of its time I think. But also very clunky as someone else said. Still.. for its time it was pretty impressive I guess. But it wasn't until SA that I and other people really took notice to the tactical stealther genre and then a lot of other games followed suite. Like Project IGI.
I am still quite shocked they haven't made any others after blood money.. especially after breaking the story to keep 47 alive at the end with the bonus mission after credits.

Like Project IGI.
Well, Project IGI was released just one month after Hitman: Codename 47 so Hitman certainly wasn't much of an influence for IGI. Great game, though. Unfortunately IGI doesn't work on my Radeon. :/
Anyhow: I'm also wondering why they haven't released an alternate version of Hitman: Contracts without the licensed music. Should be no problem finding some other artists willing to contribute fitting music for free. And personally I liked Contracts the most, right after Blood Money (so in my eyes every game actually got better, which is not a typical development for a series).
