And still no word about Bully where you "even contacted the studio lead".

At least there should be less cheaters now. But that also means that there are even less people playing multiplayer.

Might be the "German title screen" bug again? Game itself is set to English, but that German title screen appears. Bleh.

You haven't but Valve has. It's detecting the wrapper used for Steam as being different to the retail wrapper. Which is probably why the Steam patch is failing.

I think it might be caused by the data execution prevention program. becuase I had an error from windows that said it shut the program down due to this.

It installed fine for me, but I still can't use my controller. I wish there was a way to manually set up each button rather than picking a configuration for an Xbox controller. All the other games I used my controller, but this one I have to use the keyboard. Oh well.

Edit: Don't install this unless you have problems already! My game was working fine, but I wanted to get the controller working. It crashed while I was playing the game. And they still have restrictions on some of the graphic settings and I'll have to change those manually via command line. Maybe after I change them back it'll work. I guess I got greedy.

Assuming they really have fixed the problems with cheating in MP, you should. The MP is AMAZINGLY FUN. I WENT on an hour-long rampage with a guy in freemode the other night, it was so great....

Of course, up until now the MP has been ruined by script-kiddies cheating and crashing servers. Hopefully that is done with, now....

Well i did not notice much of a performance increase, its about the same as it was yesterday.

2 things really.

Give proper sli support. I have 2 gtx 280 cards and the game just wont properly utilize them, which is a shame because i know this game can run so much better if it had sli support.

And please unlock all cars in multiplayer free mode! i used the gta 4 mod installer, superb little program that allowed all cars in multiplayer, and its so much more fun with more cars to choose from.

For some reason it just wont run properly now, i turned sli of and on, tried different settings but to no avail.

You would think a quad core and a single 280 would be good enough to atleast run it at 1920x1200, maybe i just need to reinstall windows again, but for now it is just not good enough.

Did you know that I'm going to bug about Bully till I die?
At least go over the the Bully forum and admit that Rockstar doesn't care or post something like "Thanks for you money, idiots".
I'll even give you a link:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=461

But I guess Rockstar prefers to ignore the bugs forever, only saying "everything works fine" if you write an E-Mail.

I think I need to do this too. I had it so I could play for hours with no freezing, but now I can't play for more than a few minutes without it locking up. I think what we may have to do is reinstall the damn game, which sucks because it takes a couple days to download via Steam (for me at least) and then I'd have to patch it all. It didn't for me.

I hadn't logged in in my account the whole weekend so i updated GTAIV just an hour ago. I then run it and it seems to me that it takes longer to even start RGSC. Besides that i did need to delete the settings.cfg file or else the game wouldn't continue after the R* logo.

But the problems don't stop there. After i had to restart the game because i changed the texture setting to medium where i had it before the patch on default (the settings file deletion i guess is to blame for that) i ran the game for a couple of mins until i pressed ESC to get to the menu. Then the game just froze on a black screen and with alt+tab i could see an error message saying in my language sth like "the available storage space is not big enough for this command to be excecuted". So i had to terminate the GTAIV.exe process to go back to my desktop.

The next time i run GTAIV, i played for a couple of mins and then the game froze completely, without me being able to access proccess manager or use alt+tab, so i had to hard shut down my computer. Thankfully ff saved my tabs session were i had already started this post.

I'm using about 415/450MB (of my 512MB VGA Card) the game gives me and it's green so it means my settings are safe.

I run the game smoothely before with the previous patches and never had a single problem. What is wrong now?

I'll try lowering my settings (less than i had before the patch) to see if that makes a difference, but i'm really tired, working tomorrow, and spent more than an hour only trying to play. :(

Any help would be appreciated.

freezes and crashes after loading screens is tipically associated to overheat, damaged files or hardware failure, r u tried verify your cache files inside steam?

Nice to see official R* representation here.

For what its worth, the patch through steam worked fine for me (must have got it after they fixed it). Has helped performance for me as well..

After reading the patch notes when it came out, I had hoped to finally be able to use right mouse button for walk forward. But nope, still not allowed. :( Whats the deal with that? I can use it for driving and flying.. although it cancels cell phone calls :|

R* NYC, any ideas here?

tragikos, before this patch your game was running without problem in this same hardware?

freezes and crashes after loading screens is tipically associated to overheat, damaged files or hardware failure, r u tried verify your cache files inside steam?

[]'s
Yes, same hardware, no changes at all. There is no crash to desktop though. Only freezes. I verified the cache twice, first right after the patch, then right after i deleted the settings.cfg file.

I have oc my Phenom 9950BE to 2,9 (2,6 original) but the game ran perfectly before the patch. I'll try after work without oc and see what happens. Too bad tho, coz the game really played smoothly on rather high settings for my hardware. :(

Tragikos, try updating your video card driver.

Scarface, try turning your shadow quality to high or very high if you find the medium quality shadows unacceptable.

Leeb, movement in GTA IV is analog and requires an axis. This cannot be represented with a single button it must be at least 2 which is why you cannot map movement to the right mouse button.

Tragikos, try updating your video card driver.

That didn't fix the problem. Not even when i run the game with no oc am i able to play more than a couple of mins. I tried to change my graphic settings and did some benchmarks. Here are the results:

This are my benchmark before updating where the game ran smoothly (9.2 ATi drivers):
Statistics
Average FPS: 50.41
Duration: 37.23 sec
CPU Usage: 62%
System memory usage: 57%
Video memory usage: 79%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Render Quality: Highest
Reflection Resolution: High
Water Quality: High
Shadow Quality: High
View Distance: 25
Detail Distance: 30
Definition: Off
VSync: Off

Hardware
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3
Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Video Driver version: 6.14.10.6912
Audio Adapter: Realtek HD Audio output
AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor
As you can see these are high enough for a decent visual quality.

I benched now after the patch and with 9.3 ATi driver:
Statistics
Average FPS: 57.41
Duration: 36.09 sec
CPU Usage: 61%
System memory usage: 57%
Video memory usage: 98%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Texture Filter Quality: Highest
Reflection Resolution: High
Water Quality: High
Shadow Quality: High
View Distance: 15
Detail Distance: 30
Definition: Off
VSync: Off

Hardware
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3
Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Video Driver version: 6.14.10.6925
Audio Adapter: Realtek HD Audio output
AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor
I added the italics since the benchmark doesn't get that.

Seems there is a major boost in the fps (7+) but i put a -10 to viewing distance (to preserve VRAM), though the game still freezes. It also seems that video memory is used on 98% even though in the settings it says 395/450MB of memory.

If it helps, when i lowered all the slide settings (viewing distance, details, shadows, traffic) the game didn't seem to freeze, at least for 5-7 mins.

Why would i now have problems with my video card?

I'll keep on trying with the settings, to see if i can find sth more, but that's really sad. :(

edited: even auto config gives me higher settings using more VRAM, which of course freezes the game after couple of mins too... I'll try any proposals tomorrow. I don't have more time to spend right now.

I have a Radeon 4830, amd 9600 quad core black edition 2.3ghz, 4gb of ram, and it runs absolutly perfect.. everything on medium to high settings, getting 30-40fps depending on weather/ and part of city.. i even went into CCC and cranked up the anti-aliasing, My suggestion to you would be, go to add/remove programs and delete anything that has to do with ATI, and remove GTA IV completly, then get a driver sweeper, start your computer in safe mode and load driver sweeper, erase everything that comes up for ATI, restart windows. download the newest drivers, then install GTA IV, sign onto windows live and let it update that way. That is what i had to do and now i havent seen a game look so good.
(the reason why i say driver sweeper. is because ATI is stubborn on their drivers being removed from the PC, and when you update your vid drivers without removing the others completly can cause some hardware issues)
Hope that this helps.

I'm not sure I see how holding the "W" key to move forward is any different than holding the right mouse button - as far as the axis issue is concerned. Am I missing something?

Well i have removed the ati drivers with driver sweeper, i do that every time i change graphics driver. I really don't plan to remove GTAIV completely. That would be insane if u consider it's a 16GB download.

I really don't see why in a system where GTAIV v1.0.2 ran great, i should do so much effort to get it to play only for an update.
r u tried to delete the GTA4 settings file?

Well i always had and have clip capture off, saves me some fps but doesn't fix the problem.

I don't see why memrestrict would help with the problem, but i might give it a try. I also tried updating with the downloadable patch form R* website which also made no difference...

Well i tried through Vista and the game does not freeze. The thing is that the fps are ~15 less than with XP and with lower settings. That is really disappointing...

Is there any way i could rollback to 1.0.2? I really don't care about multiplayer. Just want to play like i did so far...

@wuzzy, i also tried the memrestrict command and as expected, it made no difference...

scarface199

i asked on a few different board on how to roll back to 1.0.2 and i got the same answer.. to reinstall the game
You cant get onto windows live if you dont have the 1.0.3.0 patch

tragikos
03-25-2009, 09:38 AM
Well they either informed u false or i'm missing sth. I just downloaded the 1.0.2 patch and applied it. Game runs as smoothly as it did (had a backup of my settings file too) and i can connect to windows live.

I guess you are saying that i can't play multiplayer with the 1.0.2 version and maybe you are right (haven't tried it) but i don't care. Going for singe play only.

I also made the game not to update by itself on steam, so i will have no problem i guess.

It still irritates me that patch 1.0.3 is so faulty on my computer, coz it seems that it actually had a boost on performance. :(

edit: my mistake. It connects me to windows live on offline mode.

scarface199
03-25-2009, 12:09 PM
i dont think installing the 1.0.2.0 patch removed the files from the 1.0.3.0

but as long as its work.. :D

tragikos
03-25-2009, 01:45 PM
Well the Windows Live sees it as version 1.0.2 but i don't know if the 1.0.3 files are all removed.

It works, but it works only for offline. No achievements, no multiplayer (which i said i don't care for now). It's like i have a pirated version now, makes you wonder why to pay for games :(

Anyway, i'd really like to see support from Rockstar for this patch, but it seems i'm the one with the bad luck to have this problem, so...

I tried everything i could think of. Since the game freezes even when i have the lowest possible settings, it can't be my hardware. The same hardware runs this game great on the previous version. Something is wrong with this version but i couldn't know what.

Rockstar NYC, why is it required to have 1.0.3 to play online? Version 1.0.2 worked for me, but 1.0.3 does not. I figure I can uninstall/reinstall (to 1.0.2) but that would take a lot of time, and would still not allow online functionality (connecting to windows live, etc.).

I think I may try the idea people keep talking about where you put the 1.0.2 patch back over top of the new one. Supposedly it works then, but only in offline mode. That's better than not working at all I guess. I think by logging into another GFWL game, it will update your gamerscore, etc. that you got in GTA4 offline. I will have to test it out to see.

This patch has broken my game as well.

With previous patch I could play for hours as long as I had texture quality on MED (high have me the RESC10 error).

With this new patch the game freezes for 6 or 7 seconds after about 1 minute's play, then carries on. Then after another minute it freezes completly, with the sound looping. Only way out is to end gta iv process in task manager. All of this was in multiplayer. Tried again with textures on low and other graphics setting turned down - same result )-:

So then I tried single player, started a mission, pressed escape to look at map and was left with black screen and crashed game. Could not ctrl-alt-delete out to task manager, or alt-tab or alt-F4 - completely dead, had to reset pc.

I notice on the GTA 4 forums a lot of ATI video card owners haveing same problem.

I reinstalled the 1.0.2 patch on top of the 1.0.3 and it works fine, just like it did before. I'd suggest this if the 1.0.3 patched killed your game. It plays in offline mode for GFWL but I can open Fallout 3 to update my gamerscore and such. I'm sure if you had any other GFWL game, you could do the same. If this is your only one, then at least you can play it again like this.

Perfect. Since I've installed 1.0.3, I cannot start the game any longer. Awesome. Now it wants me to re-install the game. Please excuse me while I hunt down the 1.0.2 patch and pray I can have it done in 30 seconds as opposed to half an hour.

At least it ran on 1.0.2... Slowly, but it ran all the same.

you cant play multi player on 1.0.2 patch. so yes. GFWL will prompt you to install that patch, or you can choose the offline mode and play that way. but to do MP, 1.0.3 is needed.

I got into the chopper the first time I managed to grab it. It was getting there on the bike that took me the most attempts. Just tap the space bar really fast. I used a really fast RRL, RRL, RRL tapping pattern, two double strokes with my right followed by one stroke with my left and repeat (triplets). the technique transfers well to the drum kit.

Are you using a update that you downloaded and have saved to your computer??

if so, uninstall the game, reinstall, log into windows live and let it update that way. Exactly what are you in reference to? Yeah, I have the saved updates. I also did get 1.0.3. from Live ( the second time, which also failed with a nice EFC20 error ) and initially downloaded it off the site. Any patch I receive, I keep a copy of just in case.

There's also no point in uninstalling a game in order to wait 30 minutes to reinstall it when a simple overwrite by patch 1.0.2 will do just fine. By the way, since re-installing 1.0.2, I can play again. Either way, frame rates are crap.

Yeah. I wonder the same... Doesn't MS test those before? How did they let it pass?

Considering the Games For Windows Live logo should mean it's also passed certain levels of quality control as laid down by Microsoft as well as the developer's internal QA, it should not be having all these issues due to this additional level of QA :o

Not really, there are bugs caused by this patch specifically no matter if the game is retail or steamed...

Nice job, everything got wrose after this. lots of audio hiclkups similar to those in the GTA III era games.

Crashes about every 10 minutes and well, its werose then it was in the previous patch.

However! When the game arent crasing and the sound works, it flows like a dream, prefect. Which it didnt in the older patch.

And oh system, AMD dual cure 64 6000+
ATI radeon HD 4850 1gb.

2048 DDR2 memory.

According to the games benchmark this is enough for having most settings in high and some in medium.

Hey Rockstar NYC, you probably spent more effort in typing your post than programming this game. It's a complete disaster.

I am on GTX 295, and get 15-20 FPS on medium settings. LOL! What a waste of money.

Ok guys listen to this how i fixed all the issues ive had with GTA IV.

First i tried to uninstall the game and patch it, didnt work. it crashed all the time and the sound bugged out MAJOR fps drops and so forth. (and this on mmedium settings)

I did this about five times.

So then i uninstalled it, reinstalled it. Restarted the pc.

Started the unpatched version of the game and you know what? It runs perfect. All settings on high. I played for an hour, really trying to get the game work by being chased around at a 4-5 star wanted level, blowing up cars everywhere driving through basicly the whole town except for bohan.

And it ran perfect all the way, not even a slight hicup.

Thing is, ive never played the game unpatched, when i nought the game i installed the first patch and then the game ran very poor.

Hardware:
AMD Ahhol 64 Dual Core 6000+
2048 mb of DDR2 ram
Radeon HD 4850 1gb

Im waiting to see if Rockstar has any plans to release another patch to fix the performance before I buy it.

The performance is awesome for me. The only problem is it crashes every 15 min or so. On occasion, it cold boots my machine. Not fun. But it might have something to do with the fact that I run it with limitations disabled so I can have all the settings at max. Runs super smooth on my system (i7 920@4ghz, oc'd 4870x2), but I just wish it would stop crashing. Never crashed with the 1.0.2.0 update, but there were tons of graphical errors. :( 3.0 runs so nicely when it isn't crashing, it's a shame.

I thought this game could never be this demanding.

Proven badly wrong for doubting the unexpecting. Yes, there are a lot of updates and patches being released, and I'm sure Rockstar is finally working their asses off for this (at least I hope they are)

Well thanks for the update. Still doesn't run that great on a powerful system.

Any one have any info on a future patch? Or has Rockstar abandoned ship?

ajrunke
05-24-2009, 10:25 PM
No one knows, they can only speculate and my speculation for what it's worth to you is that R* did abandon ship. They stated there are no new GTA's on the horizon, only new episodes for GTAIV, which they've stated and shown that they will not release for PC, only xbox and PS3. GTAIV will be the last GTA title to come to the PC for a hell of a long time. R* hates PC.
This means no beautiful Vice City scenery on the next gen game engines. =(. What a shame.

Good riddance... GTA is just going downhill on the pc anyway. Sure, the graphics and physics are better, but yet an eyesore with no AA and lousy framerates regardless of what the graphics settings are.

There are still too many technical issues and the game was obviously released before it was stable enough for the public. The game is now crashing and freezing on me with the latest Nvidia driver 185.85 on a GTX280.

Hah, wow. I've had it for over 6 months, and now I finally got it working in a somewhat playable state. The only thing that's missing, is the ability to not having those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s call you all the time to take them out to places, because I'm not interested in a ♥♥♥♥ing social simulator.

GTAIV WOULD be a good game if it did not constantly freez / crash constantly :o. Usually you are lucky to even get the game to go past the title screen even luckier to get one minute of gameplay. And on a good day 30 minutes to one hour is the most you can hope to get before you get a horrible crash that requires a hard boot of your computer. I have lost a lot of data and had to go through re-installs of several programs not related to GTAIV but issues were caused directly because of having to hard boot my computer so much because of GTAIV freezing / crashing.

That said there is no fix that works that I have ever seen I have really tried them all. This is NOT an issue with over heating, hardware, settings. It is an issue with the game and Rockstar's in-ability to find a fix. I would NOT buy this again or tell anyone else to do so it WOULD be a great game if it didn't crash but this is too much it literally breaks the damn game making it unplayable and un-enjoyable. Save your money do NOT buy this game.

(until such a time as this is fixed if ever in that case YES its great)

Tested again....it ran for 20 minutes before suddenly freezing than crashing only I could not get back to the desktop as usual I have to turn off my power the hard way. This is FAIL. I should be able to run this game flawlessly on max settings and even on all settings on medium or low crash issue persists. None of the "fixes" do anything.

So, any word on if Rockstar will even fix this or did I spend $50 on a game I can't even play.

Finally I installed Windows 7 on my Computer, patched the game completely and installed the latest ATi drivers. Now the game runs smoothly with better overall quality and no crashes. Seems to be combination of WinXP and ATi4870 that gives the problem. I'm happy with my Windows 7 installation now, I can finally get online :)
This is my benchmark now:
Statistics
Average FPS: 55.62
Duration: 37.18 sec
CPU Usage: 76%
System memory usage: 72%
Video memory usage: 96%

Graphics Settings

Shadow Quality: High

AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor

File ID: Benchmark.cli
I added the italics again, for a better view.

Video Driver version: 6.14.10.6912
Audio Adapter: Realtek HD Audio output

As you can see these are high enough for a decent visual quality.

I benched now after the patch and with 9.3 ATi driver:
Statistics
Average FPS: 57.41
Duration: 36.09 sec
CPU Usage: 61%
System memory usage: 57%
Video memory usage: 98%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)

Seems that 1.0.7.0 is the last patch and that's it, R* has got enough dough and gave up.
