This thread was origonally created by Knopfdruckoffz but he appears to have disappeared so I have recreated it so that I can keep it up to date with new information. To update this thread PM or reply!

This thread is not an attempt at "VALVE BASHING" its just so users can quickly check this thread if your thinking of buying a game, so that you can be aware if there are existing problems regarding the version of the game your going to get on STEAM before wasting your hard earned cash on something that will not even work for you!

Well, there are some games on steam which doesn't have the latest retail patches applied. I wan't to collect the games and list them in this thread to provide informations about it, and if they can be patched manually or not. Thank you so much Bezzer, for taking over. :)
World of Goo retail ist at 1.4 by now. The Steam version is still stuck at 1.2.

There were several other games in the old thread that are still missing from the list as well.

I said it on the last thread just after the OP went.

Vampire Masquerade dont link to just one of the community patches since there are two competing for people. This thread compares the merits of both http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742813
I think it would be best to say that there is not just one patch.

For the Major section:

HAWX (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=Tom+Clancy%27s+H.A.W.X%E2%84%A2) by Ubisoft Bucharest Studio / Ubisoft
Versions: 1.00 vs. 1.01
Thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=829791) about missing patch and updates.
Solution: None at this time; discussion and information about the patch, auto-updates and fixes by Ubisoft can be found here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2541006247/m/9611068447).

Discussion and references:

HAWX (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=Tom+Clancy%27s+H.A.W.X%E2%84%A2), it has not received the same official patch as other retail versions, see H.A.W.X. thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=468). One or two Steam user have claimed that the Steam version is 1.01 but this is not true. I have verified this by reviewing the posts that make the claim, reading both HAWX forums, and also through my own Ubisoft support request/reply. I sent support requests to Valve and they went unanswered. You can't patch the Steam version with the retail patches that simply does not work. Ubisoft states that they know of the problem and they are "working on it." The latest information provided by Ubisoft is dated April 7, 2009 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2541006247/m/9611068447).

UPDATE:
I just visited the Ubi.com forum. There is one official patch that was released: 1.01. Steam has not recevied this patch or has not released it. There is some discussion on Ubi.com about another patch, version 1.02 that may be coming but this is not verified, however, there was an update to the PC fixes thread that makes it almost seem like a second patch was release or some sort of second auto-update. But this is not clear or verified.

There were two very small updates by Steam, not patches. I can verify that there were two: one gave some people DX10 functionality and the other fixed a language setting problem. Valve has put a sticky up saying that DX10 was fixed but it was pulled down after it was found that it did not solve the problem for everyone.

Steam HAWX forum topic thread on updates and patches, including a tiny Valve response saying Ubisoft is responsible (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=829791).

Ubi.com forum for HAWX community technical support discussing patches, bugs and fixes for retail versions:

Here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2541006247/m/4051053247)
Here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2541006247/m/9611068447)
Here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2541006247/m/7031098247)

The main problems with the Steam version:

1. Dmp errors, crashes to desktop.
2. Lack of multiplayer functionality.
3. Display errors.
4. Lack of DX10 functionality.
5. Stuttering video and frame rate with DX10.

There are a number of fixes that can be found at the forums: here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=468) and here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/2541006247).

If you purchased the Steam version you may experience some frustration. Experiences are varied. Some people claim the game works just fine and have DX10 (with Vista) and multiplayer. Other can just play single player and only in DX9. Some have frequent dmp errors. Some have infrequent dmp errors. Some can only play multiplayer versus. Others have both versus and coop multiplayer. Some say that if you just wait long enough coop servers will show up.

However, it is clear that the other retail versions who have access to the patch/auto-update are having a much better experience. This is verified by looking at the extensive fixes list that have been done by Ubisoft with the patche/auto-update that is not available for Steam users.

I don't know if the thread itself really warrants a sticky in a forum this big.

Perhaps a general "FAQ/useful threads" sticky like they have in the Community and Hardware forums?

(It would be a different story, of course, if there were separate threads for each game in their respective forums. In that case, they should definitely be stickied.)

I would say that 9 times out of 10 I would prefer to have access to the patch. If you are worried about a patch ganking your game or your saves turn off the automatic updates and manage patches manually. This thread is not about bad patches. It is about patches that are not forthcoming on Steam.

Hi, this is my first post. Motivated by not being able to play MP with my m8 i thought i'd ring Activision & Valve. Valve's answer machine was useless and the person hired to voice the answer machine want's patching into COD5 so we can line up Betty's around him. More success with Activision though. I have a recorded conversation (my business server records all calls) to a development team member who said "it will be out within minutes". Yes i have his name etc. This was 20 minutes ago (22:55 GMT). I thought long and hard about posting his name and a link to the voice call recording but after carefully considering what may happen to people I thought beter of it. I'd be more than happy to disclose to an admin etc to prove what i was told. I was also told that i should really speak to their legal team after pressing for more information.

As for this whole nuisance of the patch i feel more upset that there has been little response from Valve. I mean come on, ASAP they say. 4 lines of a poor communication just isnt good enough. All we want to do is shoot zombies. I now want to shoot everyone involved in this mess.

By the way i have the retail version and a Steam account but i cant play my m8s. So it's a mess.

I hope they told me the truth but it seems that there may have been a legal dispute between Activision & Valve. They have promised to call me back.

Yes, a little "current version/build" entry on the store page would be valuable information and would at least make purchasing older games (that are "EoL") completely fair and transparent - so it's never going to happen, of course.

Well there hasn't been a posting about Ufo Afterlight, hence my point. They also didnt post news about the patch for Earth 2160 either so its entirely random if they bother posting the news about a patch or not.

If they were sensible revising a game would automatically post a news update about it but I doubt they would bother being that sensible.

Steam Games
Always up-to-date, available wherever you go. (http://www.steampowered.com/steamtour/3.php)

Let’s face it: gaming PCs aren’t exactly portable. With Steam, your games follow you from PC to PC, town to town. Simply log in to see games you’ve purchased, install a game, and start playing—whether you’re at home or away.

Best of all, Steam automatically updates your games, so you’re always playing the latest version. That means more time playing games, less time patching them.

Valve makes this promise to get you to sign up and use Steam. I kept wondering why I had this idea that my games were supposed to be the latest version. However, there are a significant number of games not up to date and we have a thread on the games not patched. Yet, we can't get a sticky for it. We have asked for a sticky over and over and it has been completely ignored.

But the SSA says we have no right to updates or anything else. How can this be?

I expect to be flamed for bringing this up. But I really would like to a commitment by Valve to follow through with this promise. Can a Valve employee please speak to this problem?

Yeah ask the 3rd party devs to sort there patches out, as for valve they have kept up there end of the deal with there games, there always being patched even some of there first titles are receiving patches still.

theyarecoming4u

But just recently we have heard that developers are having to wait sometimes weeks for Valve to update games. It's not always the publisher that is to blame.

Bulletbrain7

Morthy;9722519']Ask the publishers and/or developers to send their patches to Steam.

Good point. 3rd party companies make the patch and it makes it it's way onto the platform.

Trouble is that often we can't tell why a patch that is available to non-Steam versions of a game doesn't make it's way onto Steam.

Support request to the 3rd party and to Steam fail to yield anything but mutual finger pointing or denial.

How about if Valve make a commitment to help us chase down patches so that our games purchased on Steam are ALWAYS up to date and WE SPEND LESS TIME CHASING DOWNN PATCHES.

Like the tour says "Best of all, Steam automatically updates your games, so you’re always playing the latest version. That means more time playing games, less time patching them."

There is nothing in this statement by Valve about refusing to help us chase down patches. Rather, I see it as Valve telling us that if we use Steam we will have an easier time getting patches. But that is not what has been happening. Steam users get delays and the runaround. Often related that "it is up to the 3rd party."

Thanks for that clarification. But I really would like to hear from Valve on this. Not moderators, no offense.

Sometimes devs simply don't realize they yet to make a steam compatible patch after finishing the retail one.
When Mass Effect was released on Steam, I made a thread in Bioware official forums about not being able to play ME DLC (Bring Down the Sky). A dev replied saying that the retail patch/DLC should be compatible with the Steam version. Guess what, it was not. They sticked my thread and eventually made the retail DLC steam compatible. What I'm saying is that sometimes contacting a publisher/developer directly is a good way of bringing their attention to their unpatched Steam title. Though not all devs are active forums users as guys from Bioware.

VALVe has to test to the patch to see if it breaks the Steam Version of the game or impacts Steam in anyway shape or form. If it has issues with Steam then it doesn't get applied to the Steam version.

Well you have to admit, they do a pretty damn good job with the games that they do update, which is the vast majority.

I see your point though, and simply by stating that they update ALL games, they should follow through with it when there is a patch. If not, then Valve needs to throw in a disclaimer beneath that statement, which displays which games do not have up-to-date patches.

But, hey, I have NEVER had a problem with steam patching and I own LOADS of games. Of course, the Mass Effect thing did effect me and it ticked me off, but that wasn't steam's fault, but rather Bioware, and they fixed it.

Like everyone else said, I suggest sticking it to the developer, as it is probably more up to them, then steam.

Thanks for helping get back on track. But can we get Valve to help us prod the developer for the patch. Or at least get Valve to give us some kind of ETA or just any thing like they are working on it. Otherwise, it is just a bunch of threads like this one whining about Valve.

You have to remember, Valve aren't the ones making the patch, the game companies are and it's not really made for updates that aren't made by Valve.. Try getting the patch from another location and it'll be faster probably :D

I'd like to pitch in here because this thread caught my eye.

Creating a patch for deployment on a website, Direct2Drive, Gamers Gate etc is 100% different from deploying a patch on Steam.

The reason is simple. Steam has a very robust auto-patch mechanism that requires zero user involvement. The procedure is however not as simple as in any other case. It goes like this

Create patch
Add patch to SteamWorks tools
Test patch using local SteamWorks tools
Publish patch to Steam servers
Notify Valve a/c manager as to the existence of the patch
Valve a/c manager checks patch file submission - and based on schedules - adds to Steam server clusters

The last part is the hold-up. Assuming that the developer actually bothered to create a patch for the Steam version. So yeah, even though the patch is the same, there is a bit more work - and delay - in creating a Steam patch. But the beauty of it is that the Steam version doesn't require you to go looking for a patch. If the current one is on the Steam servers, it is automatically downloaded and applied - assuming you have that option set in Steam.

So, I won't be so quick to blame Valve because there are two critical issues that can contribute to the problem. i) did the dev/pub create a Steam version of the patch? ii) is the patch already in Steam's queue for deployment?

Hope that helps. Since I work with SteamWorks for our upcoming two games on Steam, I just wanted to share the process so that you folks understand that it is not something intentional or overlooked. So if you don't see a Steam version patch, check first with the dev/pub. My guess is that they didn't actually push one to Valve.

And for all non-Steam patches, step #1 is all thats needed because the patch can then be uploaded to any mirror site immediately.

With Steam patches, it requires a level of work on the part of the dev/pub. And if they can't "get around to it", Valve is not to blame.

I for one - in the relatively short time that we've been Steam partners - am happy with the process. It is seamless, straightforward and a no-brainer. Thats how we managed to get even our demos up on Steam - including two patches for them - in a matter of days. Nobody even noticed that the demo had been patched.

Games that are patched via GFWL don't tend to have patches deployed via Steam. Fallout 3 is another example of this. So there is no need to list such games as unpatched unless the GFWL distributed patch cannot be applied to the Steam version of the game.

Can you compare that to a retail version of Indigo Prophecy not the EU version? The content in the EU version differs to that of the US version (it contains uncut scenes and support for several European languages that the US version apparently lacks).

Do you also know if the US retail version of the game had a patch? If it didn't, then the Steam version is up to date already.

Do you also know if the US retail version of the game had a patch? If it didn't, then the Steam version is up to date already.
I scoured the net to get other versions of the file, and here are their checksums:
Picture (http://xs.to/image-C262_4B436E2E.jpg)
And yes, FH and IP each got a 1.1 patch.
The game-executables of FH 1.1 and IP 1.1 also differ (of course), but the bytecode.btc is the same.

EDIT:
And I consider the bytecode.btc to be a vital file of the game, since it's being used in the widescreen-forum to get more resolutions, so I guess it is safe to say that it's part of the game-engine.

EDIT2:
Now this is weird. Apparently, the file bytecode.btc is even on the PS2-version of the game, and it's the same size as the Steam-version, with time and date that lies months before the time and date of the 1.1-bytecode.btc.
Link (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1483178#post1483178)

EDIT3:
Here are the filesizes and the modification-dates:
Picture (http://xs.to/image-60FE_4B4373B4.jpg)
Unfortunately the file from the Steam-installation got the modification-date of today, when I installed it. But since it got the same checksum and size like the fh10-file, the date shouldn't be any different.

You are about to install the Indigo Prophecy patch.
It will upgrade your version to 1.1. Your previous save games will remain usable once the patch is installed.

Here is a list of the issues fixed by this patch

- In the level "Waking up", if Lucas dies the policeman doesn't show up at the door anymore.
- The random freeze on the loading screen in the level "Police Work" doesn't occur anymore.
- The freeze issue in the level "cemetery" when Lucas runs out of hangar after time run out is solved.
- The freeze issue in the level "Carla's appartment" when the user switches from Carla to Tyler is fixed.
- Fix a problem of activation of Tommy entrance cinematics
- The crash during the level "basketball" on some specific configurations is fixed.
- Fix a flying guitar bug!

Medieval 2 Total War and Rome Total War are both not at the latest ver = you cant play online with others who aint on steam (majority are OFF steam)

Running vanilla Rome:TW yields 1.005 but to run 1.006 you need to run barbarian invasion.

There is some inaccurate information in the first post.

1. Need for Speed Undercover, current retail version is 1.0.1.18, not 17

2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Clear Sky, both the retail and Steam versions are 1.5.10

3. Prey, both retail and Steam versions are 1.4

Shouldn't Mirror's edge in in the list too?

I don't know about RTW, but I thought M2TW on Steam had the latest patch (v 1.03). I don't have the Kingdoms expansion for it so I don't know about that.

I have kingdoms and I cant join anyone else due to patch issues or something, and Ive tried both vanilla and kingdoms, same issue.
And others cant join me (only if they got it on steam too)

That is strange because I asked on the TW Center forums and they told me that 1.03 (for vanilla) and 1.05 (for Kingdoms) were the latest patches. Maybe the issue is something else. I suggest you submit a support ticket to get an official response on as to why you can't play multiplayer.

Please post in the new "Unpatched"-thread, since this one isn't going to be updated anymore.

So is W@W still v1.3? My regedit for the game states that it is ver 1.3, and I am getting crashes, so should I manually update? is this even possible?

Why aren't you posting it in the proper "unpatched"-thread?

I don't know if this qualifies for the list, but you can get a patch for the original Far Cry to upgrade it to 64 bit, and it works fine with the Steam version.
The patch was made by Crytek, who originally created Far Cry, and was done in conjunction with AMD as a promotional thing for their new (at the time) x64 dual core CPUs.
But it works just fine with Intel CPUs too.

More information HERE (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1168343) and HERE (http://farcry.filefront.com/file/Far_Cry_AMD_64bit_Upgrade;41672).

On an unrelated note, the Steam version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 has major issues, the same for everyone, all of which can be fixed by the user after hours of reading about it, and none of which have been addressed by either Steam or Ubisoft.
The kicker is, the fixes are so easy (once you've spent all day looking for how to) it would be nothing to code them into the release, but apparently that's not important. I made two public threads in this forum about it a while back, one of which got promptly locked, the other which got promptly deleted. I made a request in the Ghost Recon forum for a moderator to sticky my compiled findings on the issues, which has been completely ignored.
Funny that - I can see Steam and/or Ubisoft refusing to patch a game for whatever reason, but for the life of me I can't see a good reason to ignore a request for a simple sticky explaining verifiable fixes to problems that everyone has - being completely ignored.
*shrug*
