i am from germany and think the rating company (usk) cut the european version only for english speaking countries. this is absolutely stupid. the controlls are very high an we adults get only cut versions. i dont import the games because the european versions are restricted in germany and the german duty can confisate or destroy this packages and i must pay this:o.
i hope valve will develop a method that we useres from cut games can switch it into uncut versions without importing it from other countries.
(i hope you understand what i mean)

No, because that would be illegal for Valve. I hate it too, but thats why im buying these games @UK. There they are cheaper and uncut.
But it would be great if you could access the american steam store and pay with a european PayPal cause then i certainly would buy more games. And if im using a proxy, Valve isnt doing anything illegal.
Thing is, Dead Space is uncut, but Bioshock cut (reduced blood). WTF?!

post ident is another method. the postman/women se your id card, look at the paper and when both are same you will veryfy and could get the uncensored versions. i hope valve think of a method like this.

Steam has several games which would get illegal in Germany. E.g. all unrated games are to be treated the same as indexed games, yet no one cares. Only bigger titles or titles which use Steam for retail packages too get the axe.

BloodRayne 1 and 2 = uncut + ♥♥♥♥ symbolics
Oh and Portal has black blood and in tf2 everything explodes into burgers -.- .
The sytem steam is useing a simple age Verification.
In Germany a Face-to-Face system is needed(checking youre id or passport by an autorised agency ).
So steam is still not doing what german law demands.
Also i would pay a small amount of money if they just release some sort of 18+ code in german retail so that you can turn youre cut version into a uncut version.
The fact that this code or cd or whatever would only be given at people of the aage of 18 or higher is the same as importing titles and i dont think that would go against german law.
I buyed 3 copies of Left4Dead as import and it works fine but the hole orange box for example is cut(buyed it over steam).
I like steam its idea and many of the features it has but do something about the sencoreship i dont want to import or let a friend buy this games for me.
The system needs improvment in the case of the censoreship and i dont understand valve.
My problem is that im able to buy it and that someone can buy it for me but im not able to do that.
If this problem is solved one day in a way that also helps people accidently buying censored stuff and new games on steam i have nothing that really bothers me about steam.

I just dont buy any cut games, that why i didnt buy Bioshock when it was on sale for €5. Id buy it even for €10 if there would be a way i could get the uncut version. Its not illegal, but they have to check if you are 18+ and Valve doesnt have that. And since you need and american CC/PP acc even if you have a american IP its impossible to buy anything other than the cut version.
So Valve, if you want more sales, enable us to buy the uncut versions.

As i said just release something like an uncut code or cd for retail that you can only get when you are 18.
If they do that they can just unlock ever title and not restrict that games anymore.
like tf2 or hl2ep2. i know. but i dont want to buy a european version, write to steam support for deleting my serial number for orange box an register the new number.
I played so much tf2 and dont want to do all my unlocks again.
I mean i bought it, im happy with it but i just want to get what someone from UK or USA gets.
Also if it is some kind of protections i had 6 or 8 year old kids in my team playing Left4Dead so it is just a way to make it more difficult for me to buy something and not really helping against children playing adult games.

You can get someone from USA to buy you the games but the first problem is you need someone from USA that wants to help you.
So if you dont know anyone from a country without censorship it wont work.
I would have buyed stuff earlier or without the need to import it.
Also players without censorship just think it is natural but for everyone in Germany it is a annoying restriction that most of us have to deal with.
I wonder why there has nothing changed about it.
The German sales for games are very high and i think that it would be much more if people can get games without any censorship or other restriction(like drm).

The safest way would be to buy the game from Germany, and use mods that will add gore.

vonkje it is possible but on servers with sv_pure2 you see only black boxes (tf2), get kicked from server or something else. i should be possible like vac that you can see your status of censored in the mainmenu.

Not really.
Also after every update(i think it is the case for Left 4 Dead) the gore patch will be gone.
You can buy stuff uncut from the UK and or get someone from a country to give it to you.
In both cases it is uncut.
It is not only that you dont have the effets like blood or in the case of tf2 body parts but also because you are over 18 and can buy that stuff.
Even if it is not allowed or tested in Germany you can still get it.
As costumer you can do that and its not brakeing any law.
It feels a bit unfair knowing that someone else can get the games legal(even if they are younger then allowed for that game) and you cant just because you are in a different country.
So i just want to buy the game without allways asking someone for it.
I mean people would pay money for that just to be able to play an game they bought uncut and that without changeing or modifing anything by themselves.

So. I've found a lot of hints regarding this (and another question (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8112590&postcount=67)in an old thread), but didn't really find an answer to this question. Rumors say that it would be possible (buy an uncut retail version of, for example, the O.B. and replace your cut, German version of the games with the uncut ones)..but does anyone have experience with this?
So, short question:
I've got TF2 as a German download in Steam. I buy the UK-version via etail. Will my existing copy be switched?

You have to write the support to remove your old copy, you won't be able to register a new one otherwise.

Ok thanks, I'll be trying that once my new copy arrives :)
