View Full Version : Steam Game Save Locations

VISIT THE NEW SAVE LOCATIONS WIKI! (http://savelocations.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page)

The purpose of this thread is to create a comprehensive list of where every game available on Steam saves its data (saved games, config files, etc), so that people will know where to look when they're making backups.

Obviously, to begin with, I can only list the games that I have access to, which given how many games are currently available on Steam, is not very many. So, please, if you have a game that is not on the list, find out where it saves its data and let us know.

WINDOWS VERSION AND DIRECTORY STRUCTURE

Valve currently only officially supports the use of the Steam client on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. As such, I will only be listing the save locations for these operating systems.
If you are running the Steam client and its games on any other operating system, then you should already know enough about it to be able to find the saves on your own.

Sidenote: While not officially supported by Valve, for the purposes of this thread the Windows 7 beta and RC use the same directory structure as Windows Vista.
Similarly, Windows 2000 uses the same directory structure as Windows XP, so for simplicity's sake, I will only be listing the "XP" and "Vista" variations.

Also for simplicity's sake, rather than typing out the entire path for every single game, I will be using the shorthand forms described below.
Please note that the locations listed are only the system defaults. If you installed Steam to a different location, then simply substitute "Program Files" with the correct install path. If you changed any of the other paths, then I assume you know how to find them.

Please also note that I currently only have access to Windows Vista and 7. The locations listed for Windows XP should be accurate, but I cannot verify them personally.

User IDs
[USERNAME] -- The name of the Windows account you use on your computer
[STEAMNAME] -- The name of your Steam account
[STEAMID] -- A numerical identifier for your Steam account

Steam-specific locations
[STEAMPATH] -- The default location where Steam is installed
Windows 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Steam\
Windows 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\

[STEAMAPPS] -- The default location for Steam Games
All versions: [STEAMPATH]\steamapps\

[STEAMCLOUD] -- Files that synchronize with the Steam Cloud
All versions: [STEAMPATH]\userdata\[STEAMID]\

General Windows locations
[DOCUMENTS] -- The default location for the "My Documents" shell folder/library
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\My Documents\
Windows Vista: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\

[APPDATA] -- The default location for standard application settings
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\
Windows Vista: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\

[LOCAL] -- The default location for system-specific application settings
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\
Windows Vista: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\

[PUBLICDATA] -- The default location for cross-user application settings
Windows XP: C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\
Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\

[PUBLIC] -- The default location for cross-user system settings
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\
Windows Vista: C:\Users\Public\

[SAVEDGAMES] -- The Windows Vista default Saved Games folder
Windows Vista: C:\Users\[DOCUMENTS]\Saved Games\
Windows XP: I do not know of any Windows XP analog for this location. If someone does, please tell me.

Windows Registry

I haven't had a chance to sort through the registry by hand, yet.

Most games' registry settings will probably be somewhere in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, however, there is currently only one registry key on the list, and it's one of the exceptions.

Note for Vista users: VirtualStore
Some programs require administrative privileges in order to run normally, but do not request those privileges from the system. In order to ensure that these programs can still operate without compromising the rest of the system, Vista uses a system called VirtualStore, which saves any files or settings the program creates in a separate location.
If you cannot find your game's save files in the location listed, try checking to see if they were placed in VirtualStore instead.
VirtualStore files can be located in [LOCAL]\VirtualStore\

GAME LIST AND SAVE LOCATIONS -- Last updated April 29th, 2009, 10:55 AM Valve Time.

It should be noted that some games save data to more than one location.
Why? Who knows. I've done my best to find it all, but if anyone finds anything else floating around in a location that's not listed, again, please let us know.

For games that place data in more than one location, some (or all) of the locations listed may not contain anything of value. I do not know why these games are creating all of these folders scattered throughout Windows, I am simply doing my best to list everything that the games generate which may be missed by standard backup procedures.

Games that save inside the [STEAMAPPS] COMMON or [STEAMCLOUD] folder

It's probably best to back up the entire [STEAMAPPS] folder if you can, but if you're low on space, I've tried to root out the important stuff for anything that saves there.
Anything that saves in the [STEAMCLOUD] folder is automatically synchronized with the Steam Cloud and does not need to be backed up (unless you are manually synchronizing with an offline machine)

Games that save inside the [STEAMNAME] folder

Again, it's best to just back up the entire [STEAMAPPS] folder, and if you don't have room to back up the actual games, then please keep in mind that the [STEAMAPPS]\[STEAMNAME] folder ONLY saves user data. The actual files for the games are stored in the .gcf files in [STEAMAPPS].
I'm listing the locations for the Config and Save files for the sake of completion, but there really is no reason not to back up the entire [STEAMAPPS]\[STEAMNAME] folder.

Games that I could not find save data for

These games, I couldn't find any save data for. Some of them, it's possible that I haven't done enough in the game to generate any data to save, but for most of them I definitely have, but still couldn't find anything.
If anyone can shed any light on these titles, as always, you're more than welcome to.

Reaxxion don't save on Hard Disk, but on System Registry at : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Reaxx ionRetailGMC13

Peggle games save in SteamApps\Common\<peggle game>\userdata

Also, if someone is interested i made a program that automatically backup and restore savegame and settings for Steam games. Actually is still in beta (i need to work to the auto update feature, but can't find the time to do it) but i can release it if someone is interested.

It supports saves inside steam, outside, different accounts (useful for games in personal account) and registry entries.

Let me know if someone want it.

Team Fortress 2 doesn't "save" in the "cfg" folder, it just stores settings there. You might want to include the "screenshots" folder too, based on your loose definition of "save".

My loose definition of "save" is:

there really is no reason not to back up the entire [STEAMAPPS]\[STEAMNAME] folder.

Maybe I should emphasize it a bit more.

Guessing both. I've only played Shadow Wars, and it has 'Spellforce2\save\'-folder with 'campaign' and 'addon1'-subfolders so suppose one is the base game, other the expansion for it.

Yes it create a folder in that folder but is for caching purpose and doesn't contain the save data. Just try to delete the folder and run the game... your profile and scores are still in place.

Anyway, i have XP. But is strange that peggle stores saves in different folders due the operating system. Maybe this is related to using administration rights or not.

Hmmm.. moving this thread to a forum where it will get buried by new threads within an hour kind of dampens its usefulness, even if it is the technically appropriate location for it.

Regardless, I finally found the saves for Buccaneer and Fish Tycoon, but I still have had no luck whatsoever locating the saves for Virtual Villagers (1) and The Wonderful End of the World. They're not in any of the common locations I've listed, I couldn't find any trace of them in the registry, and they're definitely not in their install folders (I deleted and re-downloaded them to check).

Quite the mystery.

I could probably knock up a steam backup app from this folder list.

I actually made a vbscript to automate the backup process for almost all of the games that are listed here. It sees save games, it builds them into an SFX, and dumps the file where you tell it to; if anyone wants to try it out, you can send me a PM with your email.

Mangr0v3

how did you do that bit? call 7z.exe?

Aerowinder

7za; along with 7zsd.sfx, as the native SFX options are rather lacking

Unless the Steam versions don’t use different folders than the [German/European] retail versions these folders are a bit wrong [though one can find the correct folders easily under “My Games”].

It’s
[DOCUMENTS]\My Games\Civ4 — for Sid Meier’s Civilization IV [without add-ons],
[DOCUMENTS]\My Games\Pirates — for Sid Meier’s Pirates! and
[DOCUMENTS]\My Games\Railroads — for Sid Meier’s Railroads!, which would be new to the list :)

Civ4], but I don’t think the directories are different for the Steam versions—are they?]

That directory I listed for Civ4 is the one being use on my machine, by the steam version of a US civ4, no addons, on Vista 64, it is correct.

Since this thread is for Steam versions, posting the retail save locations would not fit the criteria.

My program is designed to backup saves from any kind of install, not just from Steam. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person who's working on this kind of thing, nothing helps development like some healthy competition. MASGAU uses an XML file for each game, feel free to use the information there if it'll help your development. I've tried to keep the extraneous features on MASGAU to an minimum, it backs up stuff and restores it and can schedule backups. If a good idea for a new feature comes up I'll probably add it, but right now simple is the rule.

PopCap games have different save locations for Steam and retail. Some use ProgramData folder, some save to steam game directory. That's why I did not extensively support them in SGB.

Any updates to this list?

I don't know if this list is still being maintained, but my savegame location for Bejeweled Twist seems to be

C:\ProgramData\Steam\BejeweledTwist\users (Vista and Win7)

I've junctioned this via Dropbox to sync to my other computers and have confirmed that this does appear to be the main profile location, or at least the other computers immediately pick up and acknowledge my progress.

I looked into the other locations but none of them appeared to be the actual profile data. This one's the only one that properly synced for me.

Multi-user support is the key word.
Additionally, not all users have admin rights on the PC, so at the latest Vista’s/7’s UAC would foil saving such data in a non-user folder.
Saving the files in AppData or My Documents isn’t that bad. The one thing that’s really annoying is when a game saves in more than one location. Developers should put in an option where you can choose where to save game files—and the game should save all user-related files there.

Not always. I'm guessing that's why there can be both the local and remote subfolders in there. I lost my Defense Grid and my Serious Sam saved games when I moved Steam to another drive and only copied over steamapps. Serious Sam did remember which levels I'd beaten so I could start from the beginning of the last level I was on, but it didn't have the actual saved games. For reference see my topic and the developer's responses here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1094878).

No.
At least, unless you don’t use mklink via Command Prompt (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=664376).

The easiest way is, still, to install Steam on your games partition rather than your system partition.

I was wondering is it possible to force steam cloud to sync a save file in say a user option. Such as Gyromancer, does not save online, the save files are small for the most part. For instance if the game doesn't allow you to save online, then an option in the "my games" preface could be added by right clicking the game and asking steam cloud to keep sync with the "steam" game. I would say add non-steam games to this but currently I don't think enough security is in place. Thus all saved progress is via steam cloud and can be retrieved automatically or manually before the game starts up through use of an option for games that do not use steam cloud. Does this make sense?

Just for a reference, I created a program to help backup all the games you want to a specific folder. With the use of dropbox (etc...) it should be easy to sync saves across multiple computers. Also with the wiki link on the first post you can completely customize what games are on the list.

I hope someone finds this as useful as I have, as all steam games don't quite use the cloud.

You can find the beta here:
http://www.easycontent.net/EC/index.php?Page=Projects

**Please remember that I am not responsible for what this program may do to your saves. Remember to keep backups. I coded it with autoscript and have no malicious intent whatsoever. (also my site is just being developed as well, but I'll try to include the latest source code to this project soon)

Hi all. I've used this site and the wiki in the past a lot, and started building a script to automate my game save backups so I could move between a desktop and laptop and have a makeshift cloud by syncing files to a common location. At first it was a USB flash drive, then network drive, and now I'm using Dropbox. When Steam came out for Mac OS X I updated it to support that, and went ahead and prepared for Linux support.

This has allowed me to basically give games without Steam Cloud support the ability to sync. I started this for syncing Plants VS Zombies across two PCs, but then Civilization IV went on sale and I expanded it and was able to continue games across multiple Windows and Macs systems.

I put it all together as in a repository. Just install python 2.6 (probably works with 2.7) and run it. Details here: http://gitorious.org/steam-tower-of-bable-stob

If there is enough interest, I'll look at building a UI and maybe even making it a Windows executable/installer and such so you don't need to install python (Mac OS X already has python 2.6.x installed).

For now I only included support for games that I have and could test, but I'll be adding more as possible. There is a separate config file that you can edit to easily add games. Please let me know if a game works for you and I'll add it in.

Great thread, thank you!

MS tried to make this simple but many developers still choose to complicate it by not pointing all saves to the Windows user shell folders (My Games/Saved Games).

I use NTFS junction points to redirect every game to the user shell folder then mark the original directory the game creates as "hidden" so I never see it again.

Then if I back up my user directory, all game saves are backed up and I always know where to find them.

So do I get this right: Bully: Scholarship Edition isn't on this list, so that means my game is saved via Steam? And if I get my new PC I should make a backup of the files that save outside Steam and paste them into the maps meant for that?

No it means that it simply was never put on the list, the OP gave up on the list here on SPUF, he moved it to a wiki (http://savelocations.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page).

[DOCUMENTS]\Bully Scholarship Edition\ is where the saves are.

[SAVEDGAMES] -- The Windows Vista default Saved Games folder
Windows Vista: C:\Users\[DOCUMENTS]\Saved Games\

Small correction:

[DOCUMENTS] includes the "C:\Users" root-folder so it should be:

Windows Vista: [DOCUMENTS]\Saved Games\

However, a further correction is needed to this path since "Saved Games" is not located under:

"C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\"

but is instead one level above as:

"C:\Users\<Username>\Saved Games"

Windows XP: I do not know of any Windows XP analog for this location. If someone does, please tell me.

However, in XP the equivalent folder was indeed below the "Documents" level:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\My Documents\My Games

Therefore, according to your conventions, the above should read:

Windows XP: [DOCUMENTS]\My Games

Would the Shank game save be in:

Steam\userdata\[XXXXXXXX]\[XXXX]\remote\

Where "X" represents numbered digits? Because Shank is the only game I have for Steam and inside that folder that I mentioned above contains an administrator.sav and an administrator.dat file.

EDIT: Yes, that's the location of where your game save for Shank is saved. I just removed those two file in there including the "users" folder that contained a controller_settings.bin file and started up the game and I started off right in the beginning without the option to select the levels that I had already passed previously. And my controller setting were reset as well. You might want to add this to your list. :D

hey to all.1st post here:D
here is my ? in regards saving games to another drive, and what needs to be transferred when doing so.

building 2nd system,installing all apps,and steam and bfbc2

i have installed steam on 2nd drive of my new build,
is it possible to just copy over the steam folder from my current build-approx 12 gigs on a thumb drive, and paste it into the new steam folder.
besides the steam folder,i have been specifically looking around for other folders where steam files could be stored but am unable to find any other locations.

i did look thorugh the 1st page of this thread which obviously has not been updated with any bfbc2 info.

thanks for your help!!

Canucklehead:

Yes, just copy your entire Steam folder over. You could also run the Steam installer again after that, so you get all the proper links set up in your operating system, and your games will still be there.

The only other files that Steam stores outside of the Steam folder is game data, which can (usually) all be found under your User folder.

On Vista or Windows 7, save files are usually in:
1. Drive:\Users\Username\Saved Games
2. Drive:\Users\Username\Documents (My Documents on Windows XP)
3. Drive:\Users\Username\AppData (I believe Application Data on Windows XP)

A few games (STALKER being one I know of) stores settings in the Public user folder:
4. Drive:\Users\Public\Documents

There might be other locations, but as long as you plan on copying over your user profile, you should be getting most of the save game data.

In other words, all save data I'm aware of will be under the Users folder (or Documents and Settings on XP). Many games also store files directly in the Steam folder, so you won't have to worry about those at all.

Maybe you want to tweak your graphic card settings. Look here:
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=170251
The screenshot from that topic shows how to change that on nvidia. Go to Nvidia Control Panel, Adjust Desktop Size And Position, and then select your desired option: Use NVIDIA scaling, Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio, Do not scale
That will keep the monitor using the same resolution, but the system can use another one.

(anyway, this is completely off-topic, but I still hope it helps fixing your problem)

You guys really should put all of this into the Valve Developer Wiki as something everyone can contribute and reference to.

We can then link to that Wiki page through this thread. If Steam can't have a manually enabled non-steamwork gamesave cloud management, then we have to have this complete list that's easy to navigate through.

Let me know if someone's going to do it or maybe I have to do it myself.

Wrong. If anything, it’s {Steam}\steamapps\{username}\team fortress 2. That’s where all downloaded maps and such go.

k_wire was, however, asking for the game files which are needed to run the game. The aforementioned folder gets extracted from those [minus maps etc., of course]. These files are located with in {Steam}\steamapps and can be recognized by being named team fortress 2*.gcf, plus shared Source files named source*.gcf, plus [probably] multiplayer ob binaries.gcf and base source engine 2.gcf.
But to be one the safe side you can always backup the game via the Steam Library by right-clicking on TF2.

Heyyy, thanks jello & damaged. Found the files that are getting all the update gravy... team fortress 2 content.gcf is over 4Gb for example, and all the .gcf files have modified dates of June 4th. But I'm sure it would be best to back up the entire game via Steam Library.

As long as I am preserving any earlier updates so I don't have to dnld them again, then mission accomplished.

@Aerowinder,

I believe he was just providing general information to compliment what Kailieann posted about the usual Saved Games locations.

Actually, I find both to be incorrect.

1. C:\Users\[Documents]\Saved Games\ is not a proper path. C:\Users\[Username]\Saved Games\ is, however (assuming C is the right drive). Probably just a typo of course.

2. Documents\My Games is not the equivalent of Vista's Saved Games folder. Many games still use Documents\My Games, even in Vista and Windows 7. They are entirely unrelated locations where many games choose to save to.

Most games that use the Saved Games folder on Vista and above are either (a) designed to run only on Vista and above, or (b) designed to support an alternate (as far as I know, non-standard) save location for other operating systems. That location might just happen to be My Documents\My Games, but that doesn't mean the paths are equivalent or anything like that.

Just wanted to clarify :)

The file needed to update progress is called PREFS.DAT and can be found in

Yes (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1138731&highlight=mklink), if you have formatted your drives with NTFS which is probably the case. [That’s just one of many topics about this.]
Though, the easiest way to achieve this is to un-install Steam from its current position steamapps folder!] and installing it to the new position.

I contacted Popcap games to find the save location from Feeding Frenzy 2, it turns out the saves are in the registry. It may work for other older Popcap titles. Here is what they sent me. I have confirmed it works. Cheers.

----------------
Feeding Frenzy 2 does not have a traditional save file in the standard directory.

It's actually saved in your computer's registry. The way to copy it to a new machine is as follows:

1. Start Menu -> Select "Run.."
2. Type "regedit" and hit OK.
3. In the registry editor, navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GameHouse\Feeding Frenzy 2
4. Right click on Feeding Frenzy 2, and select "Export". Select a file name and location for the file and click "OK". You should end up with a .reg file.
5. Save that file to a secure location.
6. Re-install the game on new or reformatted computer.
7. Copy .reg file back onto machine from backup location.
8. Double click the reg file. At the "Would you like to add the information..." prompt, click "Yes"
9. Run the game - you should have your save games.

I didn't see the Binding of Isaac in here.

It comes in two parts. The first part is the serial.txt file in the game's Steam directory:

Steam\steamapps\common\the binding of isaac\serial.txt

The second part is the flash portion, so.sol, located here:

%appdata%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\<random string>\localhost\so.sol

Both are required to accurately reproduce your accomplishments/etc. in The Binding of Isaac. This is for Windows 7, not quite sure about XP (probably closely the same - Macromedia is in the Roaming Application Data folder), and I imagine this would work with the new expansion.

I can't seem to find The Dig savefiles anywhere. I have tried the Steamapps folder, the Userdata folder, all folder under My Documents and... Nothing. :(
I've also searched the Wiki, to no avail.
Does anyone know where I can find them?

Did you try the actual game's folder?

You mean the folder <Steam\steamapps\common\The Dig>?
I tried that one and also subfolders <Steam\steamapps\common\The Dig\DIG> and <Steam\steamapps\common\The Dig\DIG\VIDEO>.
I have a vague memory of the savegame files being under the <The Dig\DIG> subfolder at the installation folder of the non-Steam game I played years ago. However, none of the files under that folder present the standard name format "savegame.00X" (where X is the slot number).
I also tried revealing hidden files from the Control Panel, to no avail.

Can anybody help me with this one?

According to the database of SaveGameBackup.net, The Dig saves here: AppData\Roaming\LucasArts\The Dig.

But what is the root folder for <AppData>? I've looked for this folder all over and couldn't find it, even while using the search function.
It is possible I am mistaking it for another because my Windows runs in another language.

AppData is a hidden folder. It resides here: C:\Users\*user*\AppData.

But you can access it by typing %appdata% in the Run box.

That's it! You solved it for me.

Many, many thanks, Aerowinder! =)

Anyone know where Steam saves the list of games that you add to the Steam Library as "Non-Steam Games"? I had Minecraft, BF3 and more added (more to have all my games in one place for convenience than anything else) and Steam removed them all without notice, I would like to backup whatever file these are stored in if possible.

I think it might be winui.gcf.

No problem.

It could also be clientregistry.blob.

If it isn’t a .vdf file from the \config directory, it’s very likely somewhere in the Windows Registry.

This happened to me twice, once was because the directory was a symlink (this was during an update to the game), removing the link and letting it remake the directory fixed it, the other time I had to set permissions on the folder to allow "Everyone".

I posted a list of these on the General forum a few minutes ago, not knowing a thread already existed. I spent a bit of time putting them together and I'm really not wanting to go through and check the existing list and resulting multipage thread to see if these are on it, but I can confirm that these are all valid WIN XP paths for these games.
Please add them to the existing list if they're not on it, thanks.

By the way, there is a couple apps that know these locations and will perform backups of the various saves for many games.

Gamesave Manager (google it) is one of them which continues to be updated and is/was created based on this thread.

Slight correction. GameSave Manager was created for personal use originally until the developer "InsaneMatt" decided to give the program to every pc gamer with similar issues (developers non conformities regarding save data, profiles, configs etc making it harder for user's to backup data)

Threads like these are the ones that help get more games supported, considering the database is community supported.

I found a tool which read the savegame locations of your games and make backups http://www.gamesave-manager.com/?s=download

As is see it makes also auto-backups and have other features like move steam games and make symlinks. i never test it so someone have to test or you test it by yourself :)

Because you missed the big, obvious drop-down marked, "Search this thread"?

I have Windows 8.1 and despite having found the correct folder for save games Splinter Cell Chaos Theory won't accept the save games I put in that folder. I've made a small test: I created a new profile to see if it was going to appear in the Ubisoft folder and it did! But inside this new profile folder there is a "save" folder in which I've put the save game I want and yet the game won't recognize it. It still only offers me to play from the beginning as a "New Game". What am I doing wrong???

Thx in advance!

Is there a way to go about finding out where this data is for Windows 7?
I'm trying to locate save data for Zooloretto and Galaxy On Fire HD.

I thought it'd be under the below, but it doesn't seem like it.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata
