My son was one of the guys who started dod...I've been rounding up old PC parts here at the house and found one of his old hard drives and dod alpha 3 is on it (along with old csbeta's). When I get a chance to run it I'll post some screens, make it available if it's not generally available.

Pretty cool to find all this old stuff...

Even though I never played one of the Alpha versions my guess
would be that you just need the Half-Life version that
was current when the Alpha was available, HL might be
overpatched for the old version of DoD.

Just a guess though

Yea...I think I'll have to dig out one of my old HL1 disks and load that up as a third party mod

As FeuerSturm said, you'll need an earlier version of Half-Life. I think you'll need either v1.0.1.x or v1.0.0.x
You wouldn't happen to have any other alphas would you?

I have an old sierra "Game of the Year" edition and it doesn't recognize the ram in my i7 machine...says I have -0.001 ram and need 16MB...and it quits out. :) I'll build an XP box or a windows 98 box and see if I can get it to run.

I might have all the alpha tbh...just have not gone through this pile of 15 hard drives. The one I found the files on was a Seagate Medalist 6531: A 6.5GB hard drive. My, have times changed. Of course...my first PC back in 1987 had no hard drive...

I believe Alpha 6.8 is the earliest that is still publicly available. If you need a host, I would be happy to host it for ya.

As for playing, I recall all of the betas and alphas won't play in Steam due to various errors...

I don't know how they're getting it to work (they've yet to confirm it) but for me, it's not loading the sprites.

Well this site (http://www.gweb.me.uk/gweb/halflife.htm) says the Game of the Year edition was v1.0.1.1 so I think it should be enough.

I was able to get the game running under Hal-Life in a virtual XP environment under VirtualBox. I was able to start the game to the menu but the one bsp in the maps folder is invalid. I should have an old pointduhoc bsp somewhere on one of these hard drives...

Well...I did get it running on a alpha map called "dod_frenchtown" (imagine that). The team selection menu and class selection menu worked (just text on-screen like a mani menu) but the weapons models wouldn't load. I was able to run around in the map (looks very HL1-ish) and I'll take a few TGA's when I get a chance.

It's original. Now it's on some CD somewhere. Back when I was running my gameserver company I hosted every version from a6.8 to beta 3.1.

I have the space to host them all again, so if i have the time i'll try to find the disks with the files and upload them.

Sry...rebuilt PC and now my virtual copy of XP is asking for a license key. HA.

BTW...the game is so basic (this verison of DoD) that you really can't shoot anything, all you can do is run around a fairly horrific map. I sent a bad screen shot to Tim Holt (Waldo) a while back...let me see if I can find it

I only remember back in the days of DOD 1.3b

Basically, there was no spread or recoil. So you'd take the mp44 and go on a shooting rampage rambo style... no problem.

After 1.3b, everything changed :-(

recoil, spread, machine gunners.

wow, old thread, what the heck I'll bump it also

This is a repost of a post I made in the official forums back in 2005.
The oldest version I have is the first publicly released version, beta1.1. It does run on XP, but you will first need to install an OLD copy of HL1 complete with the WON network setup (the precursor to Steam). I have doubts it would work smoothly with the Steam version of HL1. In the old forums (which Wunderboy had archived) there was a post where somebody figured out how to get the old WON servers to run on Steam; I have no idea how he did it.

I also have the pre-Valve installs for
dod_v10.exe
dod_v13b.exe
dod_v20.exe
dod_v30.exe
DayofDefeat_v31.exe

It was 2002, and those of use tiring from Counter-Strike and Team Fortress Classic found a new game
it was billed as a Beta but coded as an Alpha

yeah, I kinda miss the old old DOD, but it's only a "nostalgia" thing I know. I truly believe 3.1 was the "pinnacle" of DOD development although I did personally like Source's updates with the machinegun mounting and smoke.
