You are correct. Steam makes this distinction clear in the game listing, however. 100% free games are listed as 'Free'. Games that have micro-transactions and the like are labeled 'Free to play'.

Games such as The Cat and the Coup, as previously mentioned, are 100% free.

how come we don't see a section for 100% freebies like America's Army 3 and the best of them all, alien swarm??? I love that one thread that was user-created, but it should be more publicized to get even more ppl on steam!

Other than the fact Steam won't let me play Forsaken Worlds
Try the install link instead of the store page. I think this did work for someone, but it might have been fixed in the meantime.

Edit: Found the thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1930356).

So today Steam gave me this message:
http://i.imgur.com/qgpOr.png

Well done Steam. Other than the fact Steam won't let me play Forsaken Worlds, I don't speak whatever language it is that they used in the picture. (Is it Spanish?). I don't know why they would've sent me that message, since I live in Australia, and all my games are set to English (and the Steam Client, and my Operating System, and my brain...)

I don't know what language that is, but it's certainly not Spanish. Whatever it is, it does come from Europe, I believe. I got the same message both in my Notebook and my PC. The Notebook is set to Spanish and the PC is set to English.

The Cat and the Coup is a new free game

http://store.steampowered.com/app/95700/
I just finished it. It was pretty weird but kinda fun. I sort of wish it had lasted longer, though. It's only a few minutes of gameplay.

Then again, the game is just the means to an end, I suppose.

Why didn't they put America's Army 3 and Alien Swarm in there? They can also make a category for new registered users who use AMD or Nvidia video cards to benefit from the offer of Half Life 2 Lost Coast and Half Life 2 Deathmatch or Peggle Extreme which is also free.

Not to mention, HL2 Lost Coast, Peggle Extreme, and HL2 Deathmatch are only considered free if anyone can download them at any time. In this case, I believe they are only available to customers who purchased something else, which makes them tie-ins and not necessarily free.

But that's just my view :)

"Free to play" refers to games where you can play the game free but they use an in-game cash shop as a means of support. It is different to Freeware games which cost nothing to download, nothing to play and have no in-game payment options.

Then perhaps they need a new category called freeware? :P

They're free if you've got an NVidia or ATI/AMD videocard. That's how I got them at least. What you said sounds possible as well.

I suppose that it will not work.

As I said before, they r using a strange IP Block system to control these F2P games, you can try to install the game and they really download it (5GB data in this case), but the game is not added on your Steam client games list and does not works too running from executable (opens launcher but not opens game =(

I havn't looked at Steams new F2P games so no idea if any of them are involved in such a situation with different companies running them in different geographical regions.

But F2P is a business model that uses things like microtransactions to generate revenue. If a company has secured the rights to a game in a certain region ie North America they wont be very happy to see there potential customers signing up to the same game in another region ie Europe.

If a local customer sacrifice latency to use a geographicaly distant server, I suppose that's something wrong with the local service offered.

In most of cases, these games is just unavailable in some regions.

So it's just the trasnsactions within the game? Who bothers anyway? Regardless how you look at it, these transactions are made only by some people who have been grinding they're character's level up to level 99 and who can't give up they're addiction.

If you mean the library, they are removed when you uninstal them.

Obviously that's not the case as this transaction model is becoming increasingly popular, therefore one must assume that a lot of people 'bother'.

It gose like this "Theres a sucker born every minute" It only took a few to start the ball rolling as in rich people that got money to burn there the only one that are dumb enough to buy in this stuff just so there coolest or baddest in town.
They're going to destroy games with months subscription just watch you see, People should avoid all in game purchases and stop the onslaught before it's too late.

Hey, i'm no stranger to that, I hate MMO's they simply promote that kind of stuff, WOW has it, many do, and subscriptions to play are crazy. It's just awful gameplay(I mean kiling monsters over and over senslessly... Seriously?) This kind of stuff isn't worth your money. Just don't bother about these things, I hope they won't turn TF2 into one, as well as thsoe hats are crazy, and the whole vibe about buying something is annoying. :o

Just checked - the servers are overloaded, and many people can't load their items. It reminds me when Half Life 2 came out and Steam had problems distributing it to the people who bought the game on the first day.

What is a premium account in TF2? I've owned it for some time, and played a few games today, but didn't notice much difference, except that the normal server list didn't load (had to use favorites), and the background music in the main menu still haven't returned (I want it back!).

You can Still take part in Steam Sales. There are many presitgous companies with online services that will purchase Steam Games for you and then Gift the game to you.

This blog explains it in detail http://www.squidoo.com/free-steam-gamess

I've been using one for the last 2 months, and a recent game that I got gifted from them is Mass Effect 2

Picture of ME2 gift
http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/9074/me2cn.jpg

The site has 7000 users, who all use the site to get Free games. You can even join it's forums and ask around and see what other's have got.
I don't doubt that some people even on this forum use it :D

Best thing is, when you get that E-mail from Steam store saying "you have been gifted (whatever) game". Perfect site to use during Sales time.

Any blogs for Eastern Europe?

Freeware and free to play are different. Free to play refers to games that have no subscription fee but are still updated on a regular basis with the funds coming from microtransactions. Valve don't quite get microtransactions though charging $20 for a cosmetic item but at least they don't expire like in other f2p games.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/107900/

I definitely did a double-take when I saw that the recommended GPU is a 570! It will be interesting to see reviews and benchmarks soon.

i found it before read your post lol XD

If someone notice regional restrictions, please let me know

That's a weird jump from 9600 min requirement to 570 recommended...

My favorite free game is definitely Cave Story (PC). The game is beautiful overall and a very fun play.

I found it with Gamerdna and I love that site now. Check em out and like them on facebook, they are kind of cool

The Altitude demo available from http://altitudegame.com/ and Steam has no time limit and includes access to all 5 planes (1st red perk, rubber hull, heavy armor, turbocharger). This perk set includes choices that are viable both for casual and for competitive play. If you enjoy Altitude but can't afford to buy it, please stick around, our community would love to have you.

Players can unlock access to the remaining perks at any time for a one-time purchase of $10.

So... does this qualifies as a game for this list? Seems like a pretty generous demo, much less of a demo and more of full game (with small limitations).

I don't see why that would be considered a free game. It looks like a Free To Play (F2P) game to me, which is a different thing altogether, but that's subjective I suppose :)

It's not grave-digging, but a demo is not a free game, by nature it would not meet the criteria.

This list is really nice to have, but honestly, I wouldn't want all those games in my Steam game library, since I'm not interested in most of them. And for the few I want, I can take the hassle of either searching for them myself or clicking a link in this thread...

Steam lists it as a "demo", but officially it is a "free version". It offers everything America's Army 3 does, so I'd say it's a free game associated with non-free games (just like Peggle Extreme).

Does that mean you don't get the modding tools or you can't play any mods, because that wouldn't just be a small bit of the game. It would be fine, if the difference would only be a missing single player campaign, then you could post it as "Full mulitplayer game", lower graphics quality... well, maybe that would still be acceptable, but if you can't play modded games, then that automatically means, you can't play every multiplayer game.

I'm talking more about ARMA II not being added, but thanks so far.

Bohemia just added the "Free" title on ArmA II demo multiplayer, the demo was limited before that?

I understand that ArmA II is composed by some features, as campaign mode and multiplayer mode, if you cap one of these features, you are restricting the user experience for that mode.

If some users says that the demo version says that it don't limits the player experiense, I will list here anyway.

It's not "games that IvanDoomer likes", it's democracy, just call some friends to tell us to list ArmA II "demo" here, cause we r shouting 1x1 for now.

HarryHy
09-23-2011, 11:39 AM
The multiplayer isn't restricted in ARMA II Free. There are no restrictions of the multiplayer for people who don't pay for the game so I don't think the 3rd star option on your main post would apply to it. You could even make one of those fancy notes next to the game saying you consider it a demo - I don't, as it is basically a free game.

If you want some other people that agree:
Steam lists it as a "demo", but officially it is a "free version". It offers everything America's Army 3 does, so I'd say it's a free game associated with non-free games (just like Peggle Extreme).

Sorry if I sounded rude on the other page, I just dislike stuff being "censored" so to speak. If it costs nothing to download on Steam, IMO it should be on the list.

A copy of the source engine is still required to play any Source mods out there--as far as I know all that has changed is that TF2 is now Free 2 Play, so you get a copy of the source SDK for free with it.

Although I suppose now that you can get it for free, Valve could potentially install the Source SDK separately when you install a mod through Steam that requires it. Not sure if they've done that, though, as from what I can see at least TF2 F2P is required to be able to play mods.

did u make a test?

I downloaded Insurgency on a new pc, using a free account, without downloading Source SDK. Worked fine.

broken85
10-02-2011, 10:11 PM
So you had no games at all in your account, and Insurgency worked fine as the first and only thing installed? If so, I'm extremely surprised, but in that case I stand corrected.

It's been a while since I've tried to install a Source mod on someone's machine that didn't have a copy of the Source engine--if it works, then the term 'mod' really should not be applied to any of these titles any longer :)

I don't have a machine that doesn't already have a large number of Source games on it, and simply using a different account on the same machine wouldn't be a good enough test, so I will have to rely on your findings for now. Thanks for testing!
