I found the problem, theres a file you have to edit if you're running on x58.
Goto C:\Program Files (x86)\Codemasters\DiRT\system\hardware_settings_re strictions.xml
edit the file ( hardware_settings_restrictions.xml) look for :-
workerMap8Core.xml (notice the '8')
and change to workerMap4Core.xml
This forces DiRT to only use 4 cores (with a core 17, you will not notice any performance hit)
Let me know if this works for you, if not I'll post the longer fix.
:)
It worked for me. Not sure if this is against Steam TOS, so make sure you check that out first.

I can absolutely confirm that this works for the i7 core.
Also, open the .xml file with notepad for it to be readable, just find the 8 and make it a 4. Game doesn't need that many cores anyway, I had no idea it would look so dated :(
And altdas, PC games are not a dying breed, were it not for the innovation here, casual gamers like yourself would still be playing tetris.

I thought with steam, there wouldn't be a Codemasters directory in program files? I'm trying to fix this, and I cannot follow these instructions as there is no Codemasters directory in program files. I looked around in local settings and found a codemasters directory, but it was empty. I have an i7 system and I would really like to play this game, now. How can I find that file?
I found it. For steam users, or at least for me, it is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dirt\system
(ignore (x86) if you're not on 64bit vista)

Glad you got it sorted mate... I played DiRT a lot over the last few weeks and found it to be a most excellent experience :)

I have to give a big thanks to everyone who posted this fix. I bought both games today and needless to say, I was very disappointed when the game kept crashing before races. Once you edit the file (which is the solution recommended by Codemasters themselves) the game runs great. Thanks again everyone for posting the fix.

Tried changing 8 to 4, tried the dll fix, tried -safemode... none of it worked.
I'm on Win 7 Pro 64, with an I7 860.

It's probably because those CPUs really have 4 physical cores but since there is Hyperthreading it would be 4x2 making it as if there was 8 cores, but this probably doesn't support it like that.

You should really learn to chill out before you make ignorant posts. Applying any one of these fixes I read about doesn't seem too hard. "PC Game Dieing" .. From 1 .xml tweak? Really now? I'd worry more so about GTA IV releases (just type in GTA IV issue in a search engine). I'd then worry more so about the games not getting released period for the PC. I do not own DiRT, I think I own DiRT 2? Lol after checking steam, yes... Yes I do own DiRT 2, if I had to do this to play it. I would be fricken obliged to do so. Better than the forced expansion of the .dll (or .dl_ ha) to play COD:UO. Which even that isn't but so bad, do it once, never again worry about it!
Now lets think, for how many people try to bash windows. How many of these games are designed and dev'd for a Linux system...? People I think these days are just happy its becoming more modern for MAC. In which case, go buy a MAC and game happily ever after(maybe). LOL, cause keep in mind....... YOU WILL STILL HAVE THE SAME GPUS, YOU WILL STILL HAVE THE i7's(cough these same fixes for the games) BEING TOSSED IN THERE AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST YOU WILL STILL HAVE O/S VULNERABILITIES/ISSUES!!! It is bizarre how the minimal of posts such as yours can disgust me.
Have you ever even tried any of these other routes? You know, instead of bashing your head against a wall. By the way, name me one modern console you haven't heard of needing a return due to being broken upon arrival and or during the valid warranty (ps2, ps3, xbox, xbox360, wii).... I have a friend who has bought 3 ps2's and he is on his 3rd ps3, how much market value is that combined? STFU and enjoy your MINOR tweak in which you are easily able to obtain.

I realize that this is an old thread, but it's still very valid.
The config edit was a good fix for me - after beating DiRT 2, I'm finally going back and playing DiRT for the first time. I dropped the 8-thread detection down to 4 threads, and upped the hyper-threading detection up to 4 threads, and the game runs quite well.
