Watchmen

Finally saw it and I honestly don't understand what the fuss is about. I was hyped for the film and now I'm glad I didn't go see it when it came out, cos then I wouldn't have been very objective about it.

Pacing was off, story was a little underwhelming and the soundtrack showed some laziness.

Well, District 9: 10/10

But since that was only today, and to be fair, the last one that I saw before this:
Wolverine: X-Men Origins : 7.5/10
Saw it on Blu-Ray DVD, some amazing stuff that holds. Gotta say, loved it being an X-Men fan from childhood. Very well done, Hugh Jackman, the best Wolverine on the planet as always. And they're planning for a sequel already. The story lacked something....not enough "X-Men"-ish....too much like a full-fledged action sequence from start to finish. A bit of realism wouldn't hurt, y'know.

Toy Story... well watched half of it. We switched over to watch the Britain's Got Talent final. It was upsetting to find out that film is 14 years old now.

Anyway, 10/10.

Ahhhh definately. My favourite movie as a kid.

You see, I have a whole different view on the new Harry potter. I'd give it a 6/10. There was no action!

I'd say the best HP so far was The order of the pheonix.

I wish they would add more action, but what they have is good too.

If you read the books, you should know that HBP wasn't supposed to have tons of action (well it did, one final battle but they cut it out)....it was just supposed to be a setup for the Deathly Hallows finale.
But you can't deny it - acting and special effects/cinematography was the best out of all six.

It's a below average comedy, but the character of Delores Salk makes up for it. Zane Buzby is the only reason this movie is worth watching.

Also, my class reunion is on the 28th so I felt like watching this again. :)

The Goods, live hard sell hard

I'd give it somewhere between a 7.0 out of a 10. Its more or less something you watch once that has no replay value. Its not bad but its not great, It falls into the above average category. The film itself is too short, it has a great cast but only focuses in into the main character too much. It should have focused in more on the supporting characters who were a lot more entertaining. The DJ saved the film for me.

Touch of Evil

Classic film noir from Mr. Orson Wells, I've been on a binge of films involving him lately (Lady From Shanghai, The Third Man etc). Touch of Evil was great though, but the way it's shot is what's most striking. Loads of long takes, amazing use of shadows/light, just a visually pleasing film. And Janet Leigh looks super fine in the movie too, I swear Hollywood ladies were hotter 50 years ago...

Great action movie, it's basically the 90s version of the recent Bourne films. Great action, good acting (Robert Deniro, Jean Reno) punctuated by a clever plot and some really sweet car chases. The ending is a bit meh, but everything else rocked my face off. Highly recommended, 9/10.

It mimics what's been done before and doesn't feel genuine or sincere in some places, if you know what I mean, but other than that I laughed my ♥♥♥ off most of the time. It's not a fantastic movie, and I find it strange how it almost achieved cult-status. I bet that if the main characters didn't cite Latin and were on a mission from God, the movie would have vanished into oblivion. But I think Wilhelm Dafoe manages to bring it to a 7/10 in my book.

The early-to-mid-90's culture theme with the 15th century dialogue just made the whole movie... awkward. I dunno, it was apparently a smashing box-office hit, but the movie just straight up didn't appeal to me.

Echelon Conspiracy

A low(er)-budget version of Eagle Eye. Has some really silly moments (not in a good way) and Shane West is truly annoying throughout the entire film. The man can't act to save his life. I don't recommend it.

I didn't really like all the trolls and orcs. Storyline was pretty light. All the stuff with the Spartan Queen was basically filler and was a bit boring. Action and special effects were good though. I probably would have preferred it if it was based on fact rather than a comic but maybe that would have made less entertaining.

Hadn't seen it in years, so I picked it up on a whim. I forgot how much of a badass Gene Hackman was in the movie, and how lame the ending is. It's still a solid crime/cop thriller though, and the scene where Hackman chases the subway train via car is still super exiting.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

♥♥♥♥ing aimless, disjointed piece of ♥♥♥♥. It's like watching one of those low-budget TV sci-fi movies, except this ain't low-budget. And it has that Disney feel to it, ugh. There's nothing worse than a bad movie that takes itself seriously. I know that suffering through this wasn't worth it, but because of my sadistic nature, I'd like to give each movie a chance to redeem itself, in some way before it ends. It's been awhile since I was actually angry at a movie while watching it. Listing the reasons why exactly G.I. Joe sucks is just a big waste of time, it simply doesn't deserve it. And it would fall on deaf ears anyway, since studios will continue to cash in on established brands and franchises, not giving a ♥♥♥♥ about what could be, if you just try. This film didn't even try, so a part of me died a little inside. For the actors, it's a paycheck, nothing more. That can be the only reason why I see actors such as Jonathan Pryce in this particular film. Channing Tatum will never be a "leading man", cos the man has no range and here he brings nothing to the table. Also, with a 170 million dollar budget you'd expect some awesome visual effects, but here they're surprisingly horrendous. A big ♥♥♥♥ing fail and not surprising, when Stephen Sommers also did Van Helsing (2004).

I think the last one I watched was the Taking Pelham remake.

It was enjoyable, a sort of blast-from-t3h-past with claustrophobic environments, psychopaths, hostages, downtown action, one-man-badassery and "doing the right thing". Not as entertaining as Die Hard, for example, but entertaining nevertheless.

I wouldn't give it better than 5/10, if that. It didn't have a great deal of plot (and what plot there was was pretty cliche from a modern perspective), and the special effects of 1968 weren't really up to the task of a proper zombie horror movie.

Pride and Prejudice, 8/10.

After reading the book, I can safely say it's one of the best book-to-movie adaptations ever made. Instead of following the book to the letter, it takes various liberties with it but trying to preserve the spirit of the novel and mostly succeeds, creating a very enjoyable film. Where it fails, however, is in some of the acting which is a bit weak, and the ending which lacks closure which is why the score isn't higher.

Still, its an enjoyable movie, one of the few romantic ones I've liked that's not a comedy as well.

Megan Fox: The Movie. Now that Diablo Cody didn't have a strong cast and director to hide her writing, the whole thing falls apart. There are a few lines here and there that made me chuckle, but this film isn't about telling a good story. It's about Megan Fox showing more skin that usual. Is it worth it ? No, it is not.

Gamer

This has got to be in the Top 5 worst movies I've seen this year. This is basically a Death Race knock-off, but without the cars. I didn't think it was possible for it to be that much worse than Death Race, but ♥♥♥♥, this is one awful movie. Death Race was at least entertaining, although to a very small degree, but nothing in Gamer makes you want to finish it. Yet I did, cos I'm sadistic.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. It actually makes me want to watch the previous 5 all over again, which was mostly due to it serving as a build-up to Deathly Hallows. I haven't read any of the books, but this film makes you want to see the conclusion. The last Potter movie I enjoyed as much as this, was The Goblet of Fire and I'm really glad Steve Kloves is part of the team again.

Glad you enjoyed HP 6 supernaut, took you long enough. ;) Just out of curiosity, where would you rank it among the others?

Personally: Azkaban (<3 Cuaron) > HBP > OotP > Goblet > SS > Chamber

More or less the same order. Azkaban comes first, cos Cuaron made it his own. I haven't seen Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets in a long time, but I'll say that Chris Columbus was the wrong choice for director. These two are and will remain my least favorite from the eight. So...

1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Half-Blood Prince
3. Goblet of Fire
4. Order of the Phoenix
5. Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets

The reason I place Goblet in front of OotP, is because the latter one felt incredibly skimmed in terms of story. I imagine this was the direct result of replacing Steve Kloves with Michael Goldenberg. Or perhaps it was simply a bigger challenge to adapt into a screenplay, dunno.

You're right, it was. For example, qudditch played a rather large role in the 5th book, but was cut completely out of the script. I understand why they did it though, it was the logical omission considering how much story is crammed in the book. It was cool to see quidditch return in the sixth movie though after its 2 flick absence. Looking forward to that sequence on blu-ray. And Emma Watson in hi-def is never a bad thing...

But yea, next two movies are going to rock. Too bad we have to wait a whole friggin year though until the first half is released.

I saw Snakes on a Plane yesterday evening. I actually thought it wasn't that bad considering it was, you know, Snakes on a Plane.

I give it a 0/10, because Captain Kirk died. No thank you.

Actually though, I would give it a 6.5/10. It was fairly interesting.

I also enjoyed that one, but a more subtle or open ending would have given it an extra point in my book. Almost like a homage to Kubrick in form, but totally opposite in content in spite of Gerty.

Yeah it did have that feel about it. I'd recommend it to anyone though, just something a little different.

Film made me laugh at times... Such as the part where they try to run from the wind. :')

Seriously, terrible acting, terrible directing and terrible pitch. The film could be summed up in a review using these two words "Killer. Trees."

Watched Juno last night. It was kind of interesting, but felt kind of 'incomplete' at the same time, as if several plot points should have been followed up and weren't. It definitely could and should have been longer. I'll give it a 7/10 anyway for decent acting and artistic merit.

How does it compare to Lord of the Rings?

Flightplan is decent. One of the more well-executed thrillers I've seen, although I would still first recommend The Game and In the Line of Fire.

Why such a comparison ?
Because Lord of the Rings is the biggest, most epic high-budget CGI-packed movie series I've had the pleasure of watching so far. From what I've heard it's widely considered to have been the benchmark for that genre ever since it came out. I'm wondering if it's finally being superseded.

I know Star Wars might sound like a more reasonable comparison, but the thing is, the three prequel ones weren't actually that great and the original trilogy belongs to an older generation of movies. Lord of the Rings has the best of both worlds.
The Game is the ♥♥♥♥, I wish I could erase my memory after watching it each time.
You mean, so you don't have to remember seeing it, or so you can see it again without knowing the ending?
Haven't watched In the Line of Fire in ages though.
It's so worth watching. Quite possibly the best Clint Eastwood movie I've seen. Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich are both so good in their roles.

Really, really good film based on a short and plotless children's book thats greatest appeal was its unique art style, which Spike Jonze kept in his film adaptation.

Where the Wild Things Are

I had a very long talk with my mother yesterday about the past, what we were like as children and as teenagers, what problems we both had at the time and still have because of it. Quite a few memories that came to the surface during this long talk, were a surprise to me and also a surprise to her. I don't think I've had such a long talk with her before. Anyway, I've forgotten what was good about me, what I was good at and in the process of growing up had suffocated my inner child. When it comes to pain, it's so clear and easy to remember when you start talking about it, but the joy and happiness, the good times, are a lot more vague and fuzzy. After this long talk I needed something to balance myself and this film worked like a charm. Even though it's mostly for children, I'd recommend it to all ages. The main human emotions are addressed throughout the film, in their most primal form. It's not hard to relate to, when the core is bare and before our eyes in all it's simplicity. If a child can understand it, then why do we forget it ?

Max is more expressive than I was as a child, so I watched him and his antics with adoration. Anyone from a broken home deals with that particular situation in their own way. Max, as most children, uses his imagination to escape reality. The difference with grown-ups is that we're more self-destructive at it and expressing your anger doesn't stop with jumping on your sister's bed or biting your mother. More opportunities are available to us, because we're taller, older and more respected because of it. On the other hand, kids are short, highly emotional people who don't know anything. They rely on their creativity and imagination to get by in the world... a world, I might add, filled with giants... an amazing feat. (from the film Arlen Faber).

I was glad to see that the soundtrack was reminiscent of the type of music used in the trailer (Arcade Fire's "Wake Up"). The soundtrack is simply awesome, Karen O and friends did a great job in creating a perfect mood for this film. And the Wild Things looked amazing, created with the combination of CGI and animatronics incorporated into these big furry costumes. Voice over was provided by a superb cast of actors matching their respective looks perfectly. I don't remember much from the book, but the drawings that I do remember were brought to life in this film. With that said, they pulled off a believable world with these characters alone. I saw the Tonight Show interview with Max Records before seeing the film and from that I understood that they chose the right person for the role. Provided that Hollywood doesn't chew the life out of this young man, we'll see more of Max Records being cast appropriately. That I'm certain of.

The best thing is to let yourself go while watching this, either way I'd be surprised if the ending didn't affect you in any meaningful way. The beauty lies in simplicity and this film is beautiful in every single way. Spike Jonze, I ♥♥♥♥ing love you man.

A nice little underrated gem starring Colin Farrell, displaying a range I wasn't even aware of.

I've got that set to record off Superchannel onto my PVR.

Last movie I watched was Deception starring Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman. 3.5/5. Decent acting all around an an OK betrayal thriller
but nothing special. I watch lots of just OK movies because I have Superchannel movie network, which is 40% average, 50% bad and 10% good.

Whaaaat, you're crazy. T2 is better in every way possible. Stripped down, T1 is just a "run away from danger" flick with a little romance thrown in. While T2 follows the same formula, it expands upon it too. You have the relationship with John and The T-800, John's rekindled relationship with his mother, questions about the morality, what makes a good parent, loads of things. T1 lacked those extra narrative touches, beyond the relationship between Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.

Not to mention better special effects, more exciting set pieces, a better script (T2 is endlessly quotable, T1 has what - 3 lines worth repeating?), better cinematography, everything. You can tell James Cameron really got into a groove directing the second film. He clearly learned a lot from T1 and used that knowledge to perfect T2.

And again the special effects. T2 is probably the most influential special effects movie ever made (I'll hear cases for The Abyss, King Kong and Jurassic Park however). I mean, the T-1000's animations still look amazing compared to some of the CGI today. Not to mention, one of the animators that worked on T2 went on to invent Photoshop.

So yea, Terminator 2: Judgment Day > The Terminator.

edit: Wait, I thought of one way T1 > T2. Arnold as The Terminator in the first film was way scarier/intimidating than the T-800 from the second movie. And I'll admit the final scene in T1, with the T-800 crawling towards Sarah in an attempt to throttle her blows away the final scene from T2, with the T-1000. That scene still makes me shiver, the thing just won't die!

No, Terminator is the very first one and in that one Arnold is evil and not the hero like in T2. Spooksmagee description of T1 is wrong too, it is much more "high" sci-fi than T2. T2 is more of an action movie and special effects. Sort of like Alien (first one) is to Aliens (second one). Both are good movies but the general consensus is that both T1 and Alien are better movies than the 2nd of each series.

You won't lose anything by not watching T3, but it's worth seeing because of Arnie. Sunshine was alright, not my favorite from Danny Boyle though.

Moon is the best sci-fi from this year. Then again I can recommend that to anyone, even if they're not into sci-fi. For example, my mother hates sci-fi and she loved Moon.
