Shaun of the Dead 8/10

I enjoyed it. :)I do really like it, though I prefer Hot Fuzz overall (against popular opinion). Both have their flaws but are head and shoulders above most films set within their respective genres. I've yet to see Zombieland and whilst it's apparently quite a different beast to Shaun it's still meant to be pretty good.

Zombieland has cool opening credits, a lot of laughs, a good cast and a nice surprise for Ghostbuster fans at the second half, but overall it's inferior to both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, imo.

What We Do Is Secret

A biopic of punk legend Darby Crash and his band, The Germs. Can't give this anything more than a 6/10; it has enough to merit a single view, but has no real lasting value. It's a decent film and if you're into punk rock (not the ♥♥♥♥ we have today), then it's definitely worth a watch. Shane West, who plays Darby Crash in the film, was hired to sing for the actual band that reunited in 2005. How weird is that ?

This reminded me that I have yet to see Control. :p

I thought it was great that the Dad helped out his basically useless horrible son by not having him die such an embarrassing death. And in the end, he knew his son was a piece of trash. Ended too much on a happy note in my opinion

I watched 2 movies last night, District 9 and Hot Fuzz.
District 9 was different than what I expected, but the story was very good
(though with some weird lines in it) and the atmosphere was well done.
I expected it to be a bit more action orientated, but the whole idea of an
alien race living in some sort of suburb was bicely done.

Hot Fuzz is one big spoof on the greater American action movies. I recommend
it to everyone who likes a laugh and are willing to find all the references!

If you like poetry then this is what you need to see, pronto. As a drama it falls a bit short, it's biographical though (a love story of Fanny Brawne and poet John Keats), so you forgive some of that. Great performances by both Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw, who blew my mind in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. If you enjoyed Pride & Prejudice (2005) and the Atonement (2007), then this is for you.

I'm in the middle of watching all the Bond movies again. :)

Weird, I'm slowly working through them all for the first time atm. Just watched the first Roger Moore flick today, Live and Let Die. Was pretty good, I still think I prefer Connery but Moore was still good. And the Bond girl in this film was smokin' hot. :D

The films are starting to get a bit cornier as I go along though, which I'm not a fan of. Moore did make his films in the 70s however, so I guess I can't blame the studio too much. Different times back then...

From Russia with Love is still my favorite though out of the pre-Pierce Brosnan films.

Weird, I'm slowly working through them all for the first time atm. Just watched the first Roger Moore flick today, Live and Let Die.

I had a long break after watching Godlfinger, so I accidentally skipped Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (I was both embarrassed and pissed). So after watching Diamonds Are Forever and Live and Let Die, I watched Thunderball and You Only Live Twice. Next up is On Her Majesty's Secret Service and then a jump to The Man with the Golden Gun. :o

And the Bond girl in this film was smokin' hot. :D

Ay, Jane Seymour looked hot as hell back then.

Yeah, sadly. Moore did one of the worst Bond films ever, but I still love him for The Man with the Golden Gun.

Everybody's Fine

I wasn't expecting it to be that serious and I found myself crying like a little ♥♥♥♥♥ at the end. Sometimes I think that I'm too easy. Nothing surprises you in this film, it hits all the emotional notes and everything works out just as you'd expect, but that's the problem. I felt cheap after watching this, even though it struck a chord with me since I have unsolved family issues of my own. What are the chances of 3 out of 4 kids having an interest towards artistic expression, when neither of the parents are artistic themselves ? A dancer, a conductor and a painter. The fourth got into advertisement, but I can't remember who she wanted to be as a child. I understand the father pushed his children to achieve these things, but a dancer, a conductor and a painter all in one family ? Get the ♥♥♥♥ out of here!

I'd give it a 5.5/10, it wasn't really witty or funny like the trailer portrayed and it was way to artsy for my taste. Only after I found out it was made by the same bastards who made Juno, I would have never watched it.

It's Complicated

One of the most disappointing films I've seen by Meryl Streep. In this film, her acting can be summarized as excessive laughing, even though she more or less delivers the necessary dramatic scenes. The first half was annoying with it's cliches and unsuccessful use of montage, while the other half works as a straight-up comedy, largely thanks to the input of John Krasinski. You know immediately that this is directed by a woman and I don't mean that in a condescending kind of way. Nancy Meyers has done better stuff though. It's standard mainstream cinema, nothing surprising, superficial and insincere.

The use of marijuana has become surprisingly accepted in mainstream cinema. You don't really expected to see Meryl Streep light up a joint on the big screen. :p

On IMDB, people who have rated this the highest are females under 18 or aged 45+, the latter being the main target audience. I don't recommend it, but it has a few good laughs here and there.

Edge of Darkness

Goes overboard with CGI sequences, something that shouldn't take the foreground in a drama like this. Heavy Rain

I obviously know that it's a PS3 game but when I think of it as a movie it gets a 10/10 :)

Saw a 'trailer' for Heavy Rain at the movies today, first time I saw a game advertised before a movie.

And the movie I saw was Invictus, enjoyed it-it had a good way of putting things and was fairly accurate and did conjure up the feelings of those times. I find it hard to give a rating so I won't. But I would encourage some of you to see it, although you would probably no enjoy it as much as me (as I am originally South African and am quite a rugby fan.)

I give Wild Things 9/10. Great CGI and a pretty neat and moving story, too. Don't know the original book but the movie seems to be very well done.

Up In The Air gets a 9/10 as well. Really liked it.

Earthlings

After seeing Food, Inc. and The Cove, I would say this is mandatory for everyone who can endure it. This is not an easy film to watch, cos it features the most disturbing footage of animal cruelty I have ever witnessed in my life. There were two instances where I became incredibly uncomfortable and started crying, in particularly when they showed a skinned animal who was alive, which was too much for me.

Not surprised this hasn't received any mainstream acceptance, awards or any critic reviews for that matter. There's not even an entry for it in RottenTomatoes, which was most surprising. A lot of people don't want this film to get out there or to be backed like An Inconvenient Truth for that matter. This film deserves that title more though. There are no agendas here, unlike with a lot of mainstream documentaries. Narration is provided by Joaquin Phoenix and the music is by Moby.

Alice in Wonderland

It was a masterpiece, Tim Burton rules!

I saw it yesterday and I enjoyed it a lot. It felt a little uneven sometimes in the pacing, and it seemed to me like Johnny Depp didn't really know what he wanted to do with the Mad Hatter (why did he keep slipping into that Scottish accent?) but those were the only dodgy bits in an overall good film. Well, and I didn't realy care for the amount of CGI used in the film, it would have been nice to see more physical sets but I guess Burton was able to more fully realize his vision that way so...meh. I Stephen Fry was awesome as the chesire cat too.

And I now have a mild crush on the chick who played Alice, Mia Wasikowska. ;)

A terrific claymation from Australia, main roles voiced by Toni Collette and Philip Seymour Hoffman, narration by Barry Humphries (not as Dame Edna, lol). Writing is excellent, but the story is a little uneven for my taste. Overall, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a better film imo, but thankfully Mary and Max doesn't fall too far behind. With Mary and Max, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Coraline, 2009 was a fantastic year for stop-motion animation. I suggest you watch all three.

The Cove times 10, in a nutshell.

A synopsis from Youtube...

EARTHLINGS, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, is a feature length documentary about humanity's absolute dependence on animals (for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research) but also illustrates our complete disrespect for these so-called "non-human providers."
With an in-depth study into pet stores, puppy mills and animals shelters, as well as factory farms, the leather and fur trades, sports and entertainment industries, and finally the medical and scientific profession, EARTHLINGS uses hidden cameras and never before seen footage to chronicle the day-to-day practices of some of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit. Powerful, informative and thought-provoking, EARTHLINGS is by far the most comprehensive documentary ever produced on the correlation between nature, animals, and human economic interests.

Nine (2009)

Now I usually don't have a problem watching a musical every once and awhile, but this isn't the best ambassador for the genre. This was even worse than Chicago, which is by the same director. In Nine, there's only one decent song, by Marion Cotillard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvGooAuW28g). I have no idea why it's called Nine, I didn't find any explanation for this, but IMDB trivia states that the title song was cut. Go figure.

This disaster cost $80,000,000 to produce, which, for the most part, was probably to pay for the salaries of Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson and Stacy Ferguson. Yes, all of these are in this one movie. Granted, Fergie hasn't got much star power in the movie business. According to BoxOfficeMojo, it has grossed $45,724,361 worldwide, which makes it a flop. Good, maybe they'll get the message now.

Twilight: New Moon

An hour was all I can watch this, no sane person would finish it to be honest. And I ♥♥♥♥ you not, it's 120 minutes long.

Every once and a while I come across a film with acting and writing so bad it makes me want to stab everyone in the face that had anything to do with that particular film. I'm not being overly dramatic here, watching this was torture. I did finish the first one though.

I had some hope for Kristen Stewart after Panic Room and Speak, but unfortunately she's been boring me ever since. The gal has no range and with these pubescent soap operas, she's hit rock bottom as an actress. I will watch The Runaways though, cos it's a Joan Jett biopic.

The whole premise of the saga is just ♥♥♥♥ing ridiculous to be honest. And are the books this poorly written as well? I hope they come with a rating of: DON'T ♥♥♥♥ING TOUCH UNLESS YOU'RE UNDERAGE! It blows my mind how a fully developed human being can stand to watch this. The relatively low budget was a smart move, cos they're making a killing with this series.

Superior to Batman in many ways, despite Jack Nicholson's Joker in Batman. Both Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer give a memorable performance; there are just so many great moments in this film. This is the best Batman movie of the old franchise.

It was definitely one of the best Batman movies. Hard to compare with others, but Danny Devito's and Michelle Pfeiffer's characters were really special. Though, iirc, the lead character was played by a nobody.

Liked the movie overall. It was a good experience anyway.

Kickass: 8.5/10
I actually JUST got back from this movie. It completely blew me away. The trailer didn't represent the movie to it's full potential. The ONLY reason I am removing 1.5 points is because hit girl was far more memorable than the main character. I am definitely looking forward to a sequel to this movie. I would also gladly see it again in theaters. This is actually a serious movie with comical undertones and it was pulled off beautifully. The audience was clapping at the end. This is the first movie I've ever been to where that happened. I see pretty much EVERY movie. I am a huge movie guy.

Actually enjoyed it.

Depressing and life affirming at the same time.

Taxi Driver

I came to the realization, about 10-20 minutes into it, that I haven't actually seen this in full. I must have been fairly young when I was first exposed to this film and I wasn't allowed to watch it all the way through. Then again, I have no idea why it took me this long to watch it again or actually, for the first time.

In short, Taxi Driver is a masterful act in directing. Martin Scorsese, I ♥♥♥♥ing bow to you. And I'm not saying this to undermine the performances in this film, all of which are superb, but the directing is what casts this film in gold.

The only thing I could complain about was Harvey Keitel's hair. :p

I wrote this about a month ago, but I forgot to post it. Here's a review of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus...

♥♥♥♥ing loved it, but unfortunately it's not all roses. I was literally eating it up until the last 30 minutes began, where it started to meander and meander as if a mouse searching for a way out of the maze. First of all, Terry Gilliam's fantasy is my kind of fantasy and very few come close to this master. He doesn't have a crush on a particular actor like Burton with Depp; most actors would kill to get a chance to work with him and those who do, are always in for a ride. The man rarely writes anything, so I'm not surprised. He takes his time to make something special; his resume speaks for itself.

The story isn't particularly captivating, but the presentation and style of Gilliam make up for it, in spades. I'm rarely this immersed in fantasy and the first hour and a half reminded me a lot of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, which is one of my favorite films of all time. Obviously there's been plenty of great fantasy films since 1988, both in animation and live action, both original works and those based on previously written material. Spirited Away and Pan's Labyrinth come to mind, both original works, as The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The latter is clearly not in the same league as the two, but forgettable it is certainly not.

Starting with the opening scene I loved how the two worlds clashed and how the story revealed it's sweet yet simple nature. That is until it started to lose focus. I don't know what is it with films going out with a sloppy third act; it's too often I'm put off by an ending compared to an otherwise enjoyable experience. The story is solid enough, I don't necessarily expect a thriller experience from a fantasy, but I do expect to be fully immersed. Thankfully, the film delivered as a whole, in that regard. Granted, his films are not for everyone, but then again he hasn't exactly tried much to service the average cinema goer, who consumes Hollywood garbage like they were hamburgers.

The cast is pretty special I have to say. Andrew Garfield, whom I have no problem of praising, cos the guy is talented as ♥♥♥♥ as far as I'm concerned. I saw the guy first in Lions for Lambs, so I was mad surprised at his British accent he pulled off in Boy A. He's actually very much a British actor, although born in USA. Either way, the guy's got talent. Christopher Plummer plays Doctor Parnassus and the man's a class act. Tom Waits, who is basically one of the coolest mother♥♥♥♥ers ever born, gives a welcomed and memorable performance as Mr. Nick, the force of evil in this film. What I love about him is that he always plays these small parts, so it's a nice change to see him have a more central role, even though he never aims to steal the show. The lovely Lily Cole plays the daughter of Doctor Parnassus and does a good job at it. Heath Ledger, whom I expected to see even less in this film, thankfully had a significant presence and the man's talent is unquestionable. And then there are those three blokes that helped out the production after Ledger passed away; these are Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. They only portray Tony's many faces in the Imaginarium, so the part of Tony very much belongs to Ledger.

All in all, it feels special and I'm not surprised by the Baron Munchausen influence, since Terry Gilliam once again teamed up with Charles McKeown to co-write the script. They also wrote Brazil together. There are some absolutely hilarious moments in this film, cos the writing is strong enough and the actors deliver. Oscar nominations for Art Direction and Costume Design are well deserved. Crazy visuals are common in Gilliam's work and this is certainly no exception. It's a trip worth taking, even though it doesn't come close to Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Brazil.

Rating: 7/10

Ok so I was watching TV a couple of hours ago and there were two films on. I took a chance and went for the underdog over Planet of the Apes (remake). This underdog being a film called Disturbia, which I had never heard of. Boy am I glad I made that choice. A brilliant film! Nothing too fancy or spectacular, described as a "tense" thriller in the TV guide. "Tense" doesn't cut it. It was so utterly gripping I watched the whole thing without pause despite my raging nicotine cravings. I highly recommend it to anyone who can appreciate a film that is void of special effects and an all-star cast.

10/10 Without a second thought.

Well I saw Iron Man 2, loved it because it's like getting a box of action figures and messing around with them. Seriously the appeal of this movie for me was the powersuits. Awesome, awesome stuff.

I think I finished watching The Aviator on Friday too, that was a pretty good movie. Loved the use of bipack color in the first part of it.

Then I saw the last forty minutes Teeth and about the first forty of The Human Centipede on Saturday before I got sick of it. It's not only a disgusting concept, it's a bad movie. Also Teeth is probably the best film ever made. ♥♥♥♥in hilarious.
