View Full Version : Steam needs a new user interface (UI)

Steam's UI needs an overhaul. One long list with tiny icons that can only be split into two sections (Favorite and Installed) is not cutting it. They need to introduce some new view modes. Maybe a larger icon view with not so many details, or a details pane for the selected game. Also, being able to group games into different categories besides just Favorites would be helpful. Grouping by genre would be nice too.

Been mentioned many times before and we were once given the response that "Its being worked on". Guessing it will take a long time till we see it tho.

Just use a different skin (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=652535). I personally use Carbon 1.1 (http://rthaut.deviantart.com/art/Carbon-v1-1-85968629)

I think what he asks (and by the way, me too) can't be done with any skin.

I think steam should drop the skinning system and use Aero. It'd be much smoother, and would integrate into the OS better.

Also, the games list when you have many games associated with an account becomes difficult to read. A way to sort out games better, or a more visual way of viewing them, perhaps using box artwork, is in order.

I second this idea. There should be an optional unthemed interface that Aero can manage.

Yet another vote for this. Steam always does kinda stick out like a sore thumb. Though rather than saying 'aero', I might word it 'system theme', since a lot of people skin their Windows...s.

What the hell is the plural of "Windows", anyway?

But yeah, using the Windows interface on it might be nice, at /least/ for the borders.

I think the reason they made their own is so that they can have windows inside of games (ie the overlay thing). Doing Aero inside of both isn't possible and its good to be consistent. :)

They had the steam skin long before they had the overlay. The only games that follow the Steam skin are GoldSrc games (CS, TFC, HL1, etc). Source games don't follow it, neither do any 3rd party games.

I wouldn't mind some changes or additions to the UI. I don't mind more options for customization. :)

But I actually like how Steam looks, it doesn't need aero. I also really like that it snaps to other windows, I hope they never change this. I actually wish all my windows would do that.

You can do that ^^

If VALVe does adopt another community skin I hope its carbon. It is the best skin I have seen and I love it.

Valve should create an area where people can upload their own skins, and users can download them. As many people dont know about them and they are not too easy to find. This would encourage skin creation too. W00t.

They might as well add custom icon support while they're at it.

I'd like to have what would amount to essentially like a scrollable bookshelf for games, with multiple levels being the different categories they're in (favorites, installed, uninstalled, etc.).

If you want a list in the order you want do this.

Put game shortcuts in a folder. Rename it Games

Rename the games shirtcuts so they are in the order you like eg.
1 CSS
2 TF2
3 L4D
4 etc..

You can create subfolders with categories and copy relevent games to it

Goto your taskbar rightclick/toolbars/new/ navigate to your folders

Now you have your games in lists the way you like them

You can have the same games in multiple lists

Enjoy...

I just think something like this would work

I agree. That's something ought to be done. More categorization features would be helpful for example beeing able to split up full games and demos.

Something like that could be nice.

I think it'd be could be nice to have the games list and friends list in a single window. I guess some people might find that annoying when they just want to access their friends list, though.

HA!, the new Beta UI has everything I asked for last June and I love it :D

new view modes
larger icon view with not so many details
a details pane for the selected game
being able to group games into different categories besides just Favorites
grouping by genre (kind of there. with the custom categories you can do it yourself)
