Change the console button for source games... in most of the keyboards of the world there is no ~.

I've never used a keyboard that was lacking the ~ button. Almost every game uses that key for console as well, probably because of Quake.

You can change the key yourself by opening up the relevant config.cfg (or adding it to your autoexec.cfg) and changing this line:
bind "`" "toggleconsole"

The second field is the one you want to change.

Got any source on that statement?

I have never seen a keyboard in my life without a "~" key.

Italian ones don't have it -.-'
And I'm not happy about our layout nonetheless...
On most keybs layout the ~ key cannot be reached without using alt-gr commands. However I don't know if this combination can be used to start the console.
In fact in some quake-derived Open Source games the key you use for console here in Italy is "\", that is the upper-left corner of the keyboard (the same key of the "`" and "~" key in the USA keyb. I don't know how they do it, it's just like if they try to get the key instead of the character.

Console is on the upper left button on that keyboard. Always has been in HL series game. Or at least for me.

The one to the left of Nr 1 key.

Nordic keyboards don't have the same button, and cannot produce that sign without shift and alt or other modifiers, which won't work in source games.

It works in the Hl1 engine, but if you try the same in source, you'll have no luck.

Team Fortress 2, Portal, HL2:Ep2 and maybe DoD:S (not 100% sure, but I'd assume so, because it's also on the Orange Box engine) actually lets you set the console key in the keyboard options. It'd be really great if Valve went back and added that to the older Source games. For some reason Left 4 Dead went back to not having that option.

Personally, I got around it by binding the console to F12 in one of the config files. That might help a bit.

Definitely not most keyboards in the world. Every keyboard I have ever been on has had that key.

They should simply make compatible for non-English keyboards. HL1 works so...

I was gonna make a new thread, but since Steam forum rules seem to say it's always better to bump an old one, I'll do just that.

For me the key down from Esc is §.
Shift + § produces ½.

~ is made by holding down Alt Gr+¨

None the less the § key usually works as the console key in most games for me, but not on Valve's games for some reason.

It doesn't bother me much as adding -console to the launch options and then binding toggleconsole to an another key works, but it's still something I'd like to see get fixed for the future. :)

Its not actually even bound to ~ its bound to `. You dont have to hold shift to open the console (atleast on a us keyboard)

You gotta use shift+´ on my keyboard to make a `

When you hit ` on my keyboard nothing happens.
Then when you hit an another key that symbol gets added on top of a character. éáú

The same thing for ^ and ¨. âûêäëü

The only way to type ` is to make that mark twice, or use it with a symbol that doesn't support it and then delete the extra letter.

Bind "w" "say I can't walk forward" << that will fix your game issues with`

Team Fortress 2 (and I think Portal and HL2 Ep2) does actually let you set the console key directly in the options menu. For Source games that do not include it in the options, it can be set in the autoexec.cfg. For example, my autoexec.cfg for L4D includes
bind "F12" toggleconsole
which makes F12 the console key.

In some games the key to the left of 1 will open the console regardless of whether the key has the same function as it would on a US keyboard.

I am well aware you can bind it, in fact I binded it already a year or so ago, just saying it's odd something so simple still hasn't been fixed.

Indeed, such a simple thing to fix shouldn't take that long. I've participated in suggestions like this a few times before, and still have not seen any other solution but to manually re-arrange the bindings in .cfg files.

Revolutionize the console button, I say!

Just like to add that there is no button to the left of my 1 key. I'm trying to bind the console key to something else like F12, but with no luck.
Any ideas?

I am on a Mac and am living in Japan (theres no buttons to the left of 1 in Japan, at least not on Macs). Binding console to F1-F12 etc by default would help tons.

Well, it would be nice if you could just re-map the console key from the options screen or whatever...

That way it won`t matter what kind of keyboard you got.

bind "*" "toggleconsole"

That's the command for it in Source games. Where the * is the key you want it to be on.
You'll find this config file in
C:\Steam\steamapps\*Account name*\counter-strike source\cstrike\cfg

Newer games like Left 4 Dead series and further would have theirs in.
C:\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg

This should help. Also I've kinda had the feeling that key in the options never seems to work.

Oh you evil troll!

German keyboards have the same problem - 'alt gr' and '+' make a '~'. In Hl1 Engine ^ (left to 1) worked by default - in Source it doesn't.

But at least in future games it probably will be configurable using the settings - at least in the CS:GO Beta it is.
