What's *THE* steamnews you're waiting for right now? Hoping for the most?

An update to a game? A new publisher or game aviable via steam? A weekend deal?

I'm waiting for this: An update to TF2 has been released...
Anything with TF2 in it :D

The ability to sort your games in folders.

A new tab with the mods for your games downloadable from steam (like the tools tab).

A section on the store (or new tab) for the free games. Right now they are hard to find outside the forums.

Any step in the direction of removing regional restrictions and price differences will make me happy.

You kidding? Then we would just get 100000 more topics of how Valve screwed them and stole their money all of these months just to turn around and change their policy. Either way, we the viewers of this forum are screwed. Either we will have to read complaining in every other thread about the euro/dollar deal or we would have to read about Valve changing their policy.

Golden Steam? that can only be 1 of 2 things:
1) Since STEAM is not a physical thing, it relies on the internet to exist, you must be asking for the internet to use Golden cables instead of the fiber optic cables we use today.

2) or you are asking for them to heat Gold (the element) until it becomes vapor and give it to you.

You're getting angry at the wrong people, here. Think about it. If valve were losing money over the Euro pricing, they would change it back. That means that, despite all the noise people make on the forums, enough people are still buying games at the inflated prices that Valve are coming out ahead.

Be angry at your fellow customer. They are the ones rewarding Valve for their business practices.

And just whose responsibility is it?
The publishers and/or developers, obviously.

She is now picking apart Steams user agreement,
Why does she need to do that for you? When you created your Steam account, you clicked a button that confirmed that you had read in it's entirety, and fully agreed with the Steam Subscriber Agreement. You should be familiar with the legally-binding agreement that you entered into.

But here, allow me to do that same "picking apart [of] Steams user agreement" that your "lawyer" friend is doing:

Your attention please, to section 9-C:
NO GUARANTEES.
VALVE DOES NOT GUARANTEE CONTINUOUS, ERROR-FREE, VIRUS-FREE OR SECURE OPERATION AND ACCESS TO STEAM, THE STEAM SOFTWARE, YOUR ACCOUNT AND/OR YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS(S).

Oh, and by the way, your threats of a "class action lawsuit"? Yeah, with only rare exceptions, you can't do that either. That user agreement that you agreed to? It clearly states that you agree that your "SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR ANY DISPUTE WITH VALVE WITH REGARD TO STEAM OR THE STEAM SOFTWARE IS TO DISCONTINUE USE OF STEAM AND CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT."

the laws of several states, as well as federal laws.
Haha! There is no law that says that a store is responsible for providing tech support or fixes for a publisher's buggy game. (Well, maybe there are such crazy laws in Europe or something, but not in the land of free enterprise. :p)

Care to try and make fun of me again?
Sorry, but your obviously made-up story about a "federal lawyer" does not impress me.

Besides, as I've already pointed out, Valve owes you no guarantees, as you should already know.

Have fun with your LAWLsuit.

Actually I am having fun with it. STEAM and Valve are just the latest company I have had them look into.

And while Valve may not have to offer support, they certainly don't require the makers of the game they sell to offer support either. Sure you may have the games support site but as many issues of game problems are directly related to issues and problems of the game working through Steam then they should be responsible to a certain extent.

But also, how long are YOU going to let yourself be pushed around and bullied by software companies for selling crap and not caring. You so blatantly defend Valve and they are just as if not more guilty of abusing the power of "end user license agreements".

Companies can make games and sell them and have no obligation to do anything. In fact they make you pay for the ability to play the game but do not guarantee that it will even work, and even go so far as if the software crashes and fries your computer that they are not responsible for it.

For as bad as the support for non-Valve games is it's pathetic and them, as with the whole gaming business, should be put under tighter scrunity.

And people like you who blindly defend "the way it is" vs. "the way it should be" are part of the problem and not the solution.

So, perhaps let me rephrase what Steam news I am waiting for:

That Valve/Steam offers it's customers a certain level of confidence that any game they sell will have full support from the manufacturer of the game through the Steam forums. That basically means if they sell LucasArts games, then there should be some sort of support staff from LucasArts to monitor their games forums and deal with issues.

Just because you are willing to let your hands be tied by "user agreements" that take away all your power and place it all in the hands of the companies doesn't mean everyone should.

Valve offers support related to distribution and downloading of the games on Steam, yes.

But also, how long are YOU going to let yourself be pushed around and bullied by software companies for selling crap and not caring.
Pushed around? Look, all I'm saying is that tech support relating to the game itself is the responsibility of those who CREATED the game, not those who merely sell it.

You so blatantly defend Valve and they are just as if not more guilty of abusing the power of "end user license agreements".
Obviously, you've never read one (and thus, have committed a certain level of legal fraud, I believe). Every EULA is like that, pretty much.

the whole gaming business, should be put under tighter scrunity.
It's not about scrutiny of the business. The problem is that you have a fundamentally flawed conception of the manufacturer/merchant paradigm and relationship, and the responsibilities of each.

And people like you who blindly defend "the way it is" vs. "the way it should be" are part of the problem and not the solution.
And what is your solution? To place technical responsibility in the hands of those who have no obligation to it, and who furthermore have no control over the support offered by it's creators?

That Valve/Steam offers it's customers a certain level of confidence that any game they sell will have full support from the manufacturer of the game through the Steam forums.
Again, it's not Valve's position to demand that from publishers.

Seriously, do you complain to a store manager, if you don't like the flavor of the latest variety of Mountain Dew? Do you ask for them to make it taste better? No, of course not. You call the manufacturer, and tell them of your dissatisfaction.

Just because you are willing to let your hands be tied by "user agreements" that take away all your power and place it all in the hands of the companies doesn't mean everyone should.
Well, considering that you have a Steam account, you did just that, in a legally-binding sense.

Look, I'm not making the case that software shouldn't be supported by it's creators. I'm just saying, that your are misdirecting your anger about poor tech support.

You're missing the whole point of my original statement:

Better support for games sold through Steam. Whether Valve is obligated to offer it or not the fact remains that it is severely lacking for not-Valve and non-exclusive Steam games, period.

You seem to think that's too much to ask for, but seeing that the end user has no protection whatsoever when it comes to purchasing games I really think we should be demanding more. Not just from Valve, but the entire industry.

Case in point there was a huge boycott with thousands of people refusing to but L4D2 because of Valves failure to to provide previously promised content for L4D. Is Valve required to provide said content? Probably not, but it stilled pissed a lot of people off and yet pre-sales of L4D2 were pretty much through the roof and I bet a high percentage of the people on the boycott were part of it.

So tell me Valve isn't responsible for that. The system is screwed and the developers take advantage of it because the consumers let them.

Stores aren't responsible to provide any support for what they sell. I purchased FEAR 2 from Gamestop, they didn't do anything other than sell me the game, ditto for Street Fighter 4, how exactly is Valve any more responsible for tech support than Gamestop?

Because every time you play FEAR2 you have to go through VALVe/Steam. You go to Gamestop once, get the game and never go back, that is the end for that game for them where as with Steam products, you have to continually use them.

If you had to go to Gamestop every time you wanted to play the game you would expect them to provide good ongoing services.

As far as new I am waiting for..."We would like to introduce a new member of the VALVe (programming) team, *my name here*"

It will happen (eventually)! Mark my words.

Valve is developer and publisher. They make and distribute their own games and have a history of supporting products of their own making. They aren't "just a seller" of games like GameStop or WalMart.

The support they give for their games is better than adequate I think they should require the same level for non-Valve games through Steam. While Steam is specifically different than Valve (making games vs. distribution of games) Valve control Steam and should not treat their selling games of games as simply being "another GameStop" but something better, especially since buyers who buy games through Steam don't have the same luxuries as if they bought them through retail outlets.

I can't play any of my games without Steam being on the computer I play the game on. I can't sell my game at the flea market or give it to my son for his computer with his mom.

Actually, Steam removes many more options we have if we buy retail. Something should make up for the loss of options.

You're missing the whole point of my original statement:

Better support for games sold through Steam.
In that case, what you're asking for has nothing to do with Steam. The point of sale should be irrelevant, as far as support from the publisher/developer goes. If you write to the publishers of a given game, or access whatever support structure they have, I'm sure that in most cases, you'll be treated the same as retail customers.

Also, for the record, no, that was not your "original statement."

You seem to think that's too much to ask for, but seeing that the end user has no protection whatsoever when it comes to purchasing games I really think we should be demanding more. Not just from Valve, but the entire industry.
You've changed your story pretty considerably.

Your "original statement", was you ranting about how there should be a class action lawsuit to "motivate Steam to provide better support for games they offer through their service."

You were specifically stating that you believed that Valve should provide tech support for games where the publisher's own support is lacking, or else they should be sued.

Case in point there was a huge boycott with thousands of people refusing to but L4D2 because of Valves failure to to provide previously promised content for L4D. Is Valve required to provide said content? Probably not, but it stilled jarateed a lot of people off and yet pre-sales of L4D2 were pretty much through the roof and I bet a high percentage of the people on the boycott were part of it.

Uh, what? Completely different situation, totally different story, and more or less, completely irrelevant.

Also, when exactly did Valve officially stop supporting L4D? They never provided a timetable for extra content for that game. You can't disprove something that hasn't happened yet.

They aren't "just a seller" of games like GameStop or WalMart.
Yes, it is. Steam is just a store. That's all.

Also, GameStop and Walmart produce store-brand products, too. So, they're more similar to the Valve/Steam situation that you think.

The support they give for their games is better than adequate I think they should require the same level for non-Valve games through Steam.
That's ridiculous. That's like saying that Walmart needs to provide customer support for Friskies brand cat food, just because Wal-mart sells their own brand of cat food.

Valve control Steam and should not treat their selling games of games as simply being "another GameStop" but something better,
But it is just a store. Where exactly did you get all these ideas about what Steam is supposed to be?

especially since buyers who buy games through Steam don't have the same luxuries as if they bought them through retail outlets.
They have other unique benefits that mostly balance it out.

Something should make up for the loss of options.
Again, you're trying to pin responsibility on those who have no claim to it. This is ridiculous.

You can choose to not buy Steam games, like the Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott group. Games aren't a necessity like clothing, food, and shelter.

As another member mentioned, Valve is only responsible for the games they sell, and that's it, how exactly can they provide tech support for games they didn't make? How do they have any inside knowledge of say Ghostbusters, Street Fighter 4, or any other 3rd party game that gives them the ability to do tech support?

I've love to see full tilt pinball fixed, but I can't see how Valve / Steam is in a position to do anything regarding the game than stop selling it on their site.

The news that Steam will be dropping its DRM and making the Steam client optional. That way you could backup your games and now have to worry about being without internet access. It would also mean Steam wouldn't force updates upon people, which has proved problematic with many games (King's Bounty being a notable one). Steam's great but it gives you no control over your games, not like buying at retail does.

Oh, and EA and Blizzard releasing their entire back catalogue for all regions (including the UK) would be a close second.

Actually on second thought, I would love to see Valve implement something similar to what GamersGate does. GamersGate has a system where you earn Blue Coins when you buy a game, review a game, give a game a star rating or help someone with a publicly posted question. The 1000 coins are worth $1 and you can use them to buy games.

Of course, it requires a bit more work on Paradox's side because they check all the reviews you post before giving you coins, the same goes for answering questions. You can only rate games that you own. It's an awesome system because it encourages spending and staying active in the community. If Valve plays it smart, they could even somehow tie achievements to "blue coins" (or whatever Valve wants to call it - Headcrabs or crowbars or something :D). Of course people would try to cheat them, but Valve can keep a close 'eye' on them before awarding you :p Eg. earning all the Red Orchestra achievements in 2 days is definitely fishy.

Oh, I'd also love to see something similar to what Microsoft did with GFWL, as in, being able to rate other players, scores for achievements etc. Of course, GFWL is garbage so don't follow it *too* closely :D

She is now picking apart Steams user agreement, the agreements Steam/Valve makes with companies to distribute their products

While I agree that Valve should greatly improve their service in respect to selling "broken" games (such as the whole JA2UB business), you're not exactly helping your argument when you post information such as the above quote.

Considering the fact that all such agreements made between Valve and publishers/developers are done under an NDA, would you care to explain how your "friend" has managed to get a hold of all these contracts long before a case has even been filed?

Actually on second thought, I would love to see Valve implement something similar to what GamersGate does. GamersGate has a system where you earn Blue Coins when you buy a game, review a game, give a game a star rating or help someone with a publicly posted question.

That's a good system but it's flawed. Especially the awarding of coins for answering questions. The problem there is that most people assume they are talking to support and not other gamers, and then, when the issue is solved, they never bother to mark it as such -- which results in you not getting awarded for it.

Ricky, it'll be adapted for PC. The PC market is difficult these days due to MASSIVE levels of piracy so we simply can't take the risk of ploughing extensive resources into a bespoke PC edition, it simply doesn't make sense. The PC version (released via Steam) will be good value and play great. We may also look at re-releasing the original (with updates) via Steam at some point, as well as other games in the series.

What steam news am I looking forward to?

For start it would be the announcement of more companies ditching gfwl and going with steamworks (origin is fine too i guess).

I'd also like to see what valve are planning as to how they are going to try to reach out and appeal towards the console crowd towards making perhaps some PC exclusives available to console users without sacrificing a good pc port to consoles.

I'd like to also see what type of updates steam will get in the future, if they will offer any other services, maybe they can expand upon the valve store and selling other things than digital games, music and books and game guides.

Any new news of a valve game coming out or in production is also a welcome treat for us too.

Steam Cloud management
Big picture mode
Half-Li..oh forget it.

BTW, somebody mentioned Jet Set Radio. It's coming to consoles and PC this summer, and I assume it will be on Steam. It's not JSR Future, but the original game for Dreamcast (called Jet Grind Radio in the US), in higher resolution and widescreen.
